KANK in Oscar Library… Oscars… you have lost your mind
If you thought what you read might be an illusion.. nope it is not.. yes i am talking of the same shit that K-JO came up with a few months back. The same movie that that made people cry, the same movie that made people laugh. the same movie that people couldnt forget for days, as it is the same movie that still gives me nightmares( closely followed by Fanaa).
Now the oscars… yes the same awards which is the most watched Film event in the whole entire world… have decided to put KANK into their library… For what? A 101 for screenwriters. For a second i thought they wanted to put KANK into their library for the exact opposite reason.. 101 reasons why you should’nt adopt the K-JO style of writing. But i am so wrong. Then i made bit of research and found an article here.
You might be smoking Pot, or snorting on Coke or fucking getting the acid drips before you thought of such a henious crime that you would be commiting on all the budding cinema enthusiasts.
Here’s my take on Mr. Karan Johar.
K-Jo: “It’s a great acknowledgment of my work”
Oscars: “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ has just been acquired by The Library of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscar Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library). His second film to be picked up after ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’, the script is intended for usage for research purposes by students, filmmakers, writers and actors”
Me: God Bless you students
K-JO: “I’m in New York and really, the film is following me in a wonderful and introspective way I’ve had people coming and patting me on my back, others screaming at me, but it’s been a gamut of revelations – of two extremes”
Me: Fool of an Ass… there definitely are two extremes.. One who wants to Suck you dry because they have no options and the other who want to whip your ass because they know what a QUALITY CINEMA IS. Chalo forget it tell something else Mr. Elton errrr.. K-Jo
K-JO: Sumeet listen to this…A very interesting point i have
Me: Shoot…
K-JO: What’s surprising and what I look at as a victory is that people identify with the characters as real people not, Shah Rukh, Rani, Abhishek and Preeti. Loads of people have asked me why does Rani leave Abhishek, and that is the point. She is a real person. If it was a dreamy, celluloid fantasy she would never leave a man like that.
Me: “Yes Mr.Perfect i do identify with the characters… no doubt i identify with the characters and then i started peeing in the restroom. You have a man who hates his wife for no apparent reason of her’s and then there is this sobbing bitch who doesnt want to see any good thing in her husband no matter what he does, yet she wants to sleep with a crippled looser of a guy… How true… Yes i do identify with the characters… I sure do.. Yawn!!!! Is it morning yet? damn had a nightmare.”

Throw this in with Harvard asking for Lalu’s resume.
Then again, the academy isn’t exactly full of geniuses either. In a world where assistants usually drop in the ballot for the oscars for their bosses, shit like this is inevitable.
Or maybe that script is going into the same room where they keep the ark of the covenant alongwith Oscar Welles version of Heart of Darkness.
I’m pretty sure K-JO (wtf?) knew someone who knew someone who orally pleasured someone in the academy to get his film in the library. Or maybe its because he’s spent so much capital shooting in the city of New York that this was just their obligatory reach-around.
@ Anangbhai… Yes, not forgetting KANK is his second movie in the library after Kal Ho Na Ho.. which co-incidentially was also shot in the city of NY
The Margret Herrick library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (The Oscar is the award, innit?)collects screenplays not based on merit but, and I quote from their site;
“The collection is broad-based, covering the many aspects of film throughout its history. Included are scripts for silent films, foreign language films, documentaries, animated features and shorts, Academy Award winners and cult favorites.”
A quick web search shows dozens of Indian films claiming inclusion in the “Oscar” library.Curiously, nobody else seems to tom-tom this ‘achievement’ much. Methinks just an attempt to get associated with that coveted Oscar tag.
Hi
As mentioned in the earlier comment. It’s not a big deal. It’s just a library – they will collect whatever they want to lay their hands on. A video library surely doesnt have just good movies right? It will have the good ones, and the bad ones. It’s just another publicity stunt – knowing that we will not be able to understand what it means (which is ‘bullshit’ really), do something like this and get it printed all across the media. Some more publicity – that’s all.

@ VC, Navdeep yes i do agree with both of you that it is just a libraray. But the oscars with it’s reputation should’nt be doing that atleast with KANK. It is something like a Blockbuster( A DVD Chain Store) carrying soft-core mallu porn!!!:((:((
Most of the script of hindi movies that have been acquired by Oscar Library are copy of Hollywood movies. So maybe they just want their students to compare two versions of same story?
Blockboster store carrying a hardcore mallu porn !!! yes this is exactly what this is like ..
How did this happen ??? :-? Were the gatekeepers of the Oscar library gay too ??? :-?
Did karan johar experience the ‘couch’ ???
just went to the movie to see how bad it is…. well.. it actually sucked big time……
u guys have to watch CLOSER… it’s a awesome movie.
watta gimmick this gayran..i mean karan johar has pulled up??KANK in oscar library…seems lyk authorities out there want their students to read this how-to-cast-superstars-shoot-in-foreign-locales-and-fool-NRI/Indian-audience manual not to forget mint away in glory
Hey Anurag,
I have been a fan of yours and your independent spirit, although I am yet to see a movie made by you (you would know why). I just want to tell you something. Please do not fall into the Ramu trap of “trashing” fellow film-makers. I know KANK sucks and so do you. But there is a certain dignity with which a person of your creative calibre needs to conduct himself, which I find missing in this article. There is so much a smack of the poor David against the mighty Goliath in here that it’s not the Anurag I know of.
You should have the last laugh when No Smoking releases (or Gulal, or Black Friday, or Paanch) and is lapped up by the critics and masses alike. And I shall be there too, laughing with you, for you, on the First day first show.
I hope you get the point. Best wishes.
- Sudip
@ Sudip … although ur points might be relavent .. the above artcile wasn’t written by anurag !!!!!
@Sudip.. Reserve all that anger for me.. Its me who has written the article and i just shot what i thought was insanely stupid… One of those “heat of the moment” thingys but i still abide by it.
Easier way to find the author of the post by looking for the name right below the Subject, and rigth before the time stamp.
Saw KANK last night finally and was very impressed. I dont understand why such an extreme reaction to a very well made movie. The movie had a good script, a sensitive theme(unlike Johar’s other ventures), awesome acting by all (except one scene at railway station where SRK goes over the top and some wooden, similar expressions by Abhishek), excellent music, good pace and brilliant comic situations. I loved it from start to end. SRK did pretty well compared to his other acts. Sometimes people hate successful filmmakers and take it out on their films and KANK seems to be one such case. Johar certainly grew with this film and this is his best cinematic effort till date.
I wanted to like this film when I bought the 200 bucks ticket and sat with quiet resignation of KJ’s previous works(i hated them all). i even liked it, the brilliant start, the first scene with SRK n Rani, the way marriage as a flawed relationship is shown, the brilliant work by Abhishek in whichever small scenes he gets, n obviously the songs, but i lost it when the subway scene came, and the movie fell a steep downwards from there.
I had no prepared responses or notions for the film, i treated it for what it was, as it happened. and when it went sad and worse and intolerable gradually, i felt another good concept killed at the hands of poor execution.
SRK was good til he and Rani collectively murdered whatever sympathy their characters had gained till now, by sobbing pointlessly. there was no justification from the narrative POV for their overtly maudlin outburst.
I cant say how the film was on the whole, cus unfortunately, I could not make myself sit till the last frame, and left much before I made a rude, self-righteous judgement. may be i ll be able to see it someday, when i dont have to pay 200 bucks.
Tushar – > The film depicts SRK and rani as flawed characters who put their own self before family. Why is that putting anyone off is beyond me. These people had grey characters and that is well acknowledged and publicised.
Well Jwalant, I respect your views.
I have no ethical issues with any film till date, they can do or show whatever they want. I also celebrate ‘loser’hood in films if done correctly, but when someone expects me to get mushi-fied by sobbing over Who is the bigger loser of the Two, I honestly cant take it. And thats what the film seemed to me- a loser contest between SRK & Rani’s character. I in fact love gray characters, but if a gray character uses Surf Excel n tries to turn white for the sake of a ‘its all about loving your parents’ kinds happy ending, i get constipated.
Anyways, subjective stuff like this goes beyond comprehension and is endlessly arguable. So I will keep defending my take and you yours till KANK’s sequel comes up :-)
What is so common about SRK’s cahracter in most of his films? In the earlier films he steals an engaged guy’s fiance. Now since he has grown old, it doesnt suit him anymore, so he has stealing people’s wives. I hope this is the last film we see him doing this:)
you bet! in any case, i am not gonna waste my money any longer on these cleenex-friendly attempts in the name of ‘emotional film hai bhai humko hamaari love story yaad aayi’ genre.
SAD! thats what i feel about KANK. Give you SRK, Abhishek, Rani and Preeti and as much money to spend as one wants to. And this is what one comes up with. Not on.
I think that people need to review their screenplays with common people and take their POVs rather then a self built cocoon. Lots of times, the INSIDERS are vary of giving honest comments, afraid to hurt peoples egos and also because of the fear of getting into ‘THE PERSONS’ bad books.
Another joke I saw was ‘DHOOM 2′. After seeing the film, I thought it was mis spelt, should have been DOOM 2.
The ONLY GOOD THING in the film was Hritik. How can u ever have such an interrupted screenplay. GEEZ. There were two women sitting next to me whom I did not even know. Suddenly one of them turned to me and asked me, ‘Hi excuse me, can you please tell me what is going on in the film, cuase I cannot figure this out’. And trust me she was in her seat before I arrived in the theater and that was before the National Anthem went on.
- Nish, you just touched on something I have been writing an article on… will make sure to complete it and post soon.
Nish, I guess that kind of script review is in fact practised by some Indian film makers now, case in point- vidhu vinod chopra/raj kumar hirani, if I am correct, its called FG’s or focussed group discussions, they also did it for RDB.
In fact for LRM, they did a complete market/future analysis..
this movie had more WTF? moments than DON and Fanaa combined
:-w
LOL sana.. i totally agree…and i didnt even see DON or Fanaa yet.. but the KANK was super messed up.. where was the story?? and reality in characters.. yeah rite!!!
KANK is a great movie, trust me watch it without any disturbance and you will like it. At first I thought what a rubbish movie, total waste of time in terms of the story line, characters etc. but after I wachted it again it was completely the opposite. One objection is the role that was given to Senior AB.
KJ should have Salman Khan and Ash in his next movie.
MunnaBhai, tune mere bhare hua ghao ko phir se khol diya hai!
With all due respect to the efforts put in to making this film (see Kartik Krishnan’s open letter), I will try my best to be objective in overview of the film and balance out what I liked and what I can’t help but critisize.
The good. I admit it, there were moments in KANK that I thought were very well handled, moments that had the kind of cinematic impact a guy like Karan Johar (with that level of budget, stars, music, hype, etc) is capable of.
I enjoyed the first interaction between SRK & Rani. It was a well-written conversation, and raised a few important questions. SRK getting smoked by a car moments later had the required shock value. Great setup.
But then we get into the marital conflicts and you begin to think “SRK’s Dev Saran is not even trying to make it work. His character only has one trait: Bitterness. Thats it. And even that trait isn’t exactly well flushed out. And why is he so bitchy and mean to his own kid?? Ok, he’s frustrated with his situation, but ALL THE TIME??…” I could go on for weeks…
