Karzzz : The Review
Stories based on re-incarnation have relatively worked for our Film Industry. From Madhumati to OSO, most of them have done reasonably well at the BO. And one such was Karz directed by Subhash Ghai in 1980. Rishi Kapoor was an established star by then, yet Karz took him to new heights. For Tina Munim, it was first big success and Simi Garewal, made history with the role of Kamini
There had been a mixed responses from the audiences whenever a blockbuster from past has been remade. Don and Devdas got thumbs up while Umrao Jaan and Sholay were discarded cruelly. This can not be said that Don was accepted as it had altered the story/set/sequences keeping the current generation in mind because so was the case with Sholay which failed. It is a sturdy path for those fiddling with the classic and not many dare take it. Satish Kaushik (of Tere Naam) pitched in along with T-Series to re-tell the story of Monty twenty eight years later.
The story has definitely been altered. It is based in Cape Town and Kenya this time. Car gave way to airplane. Kamini has a dancing number and many small variations here and there. The basic problem lies with the screenplay. The movie is a thriller but hardly holds your attention. There is too much of traveling between Cape Town and Kenya and you get confused where truly the current scene is based. Himesh hogs almost every frame. There is hardly any scene where he is not present. Shweta seems as if she was woken up on the day of shoot and told to act. She sleepwalks through entire movie. The significant Monty-Tina falling in love sequence is written in haste. Urmila doesn’t hold much water as a greedy lover. She also doesn’t seem much revengeful. These are few unpleasant incidents which killed the movie.
And the rest was done by the music and dialogues. There are too many untimely songs and too many firangs in the songs. Songs and choreography have repetitive feel of Himesh’s own previous works. Not even one song gets registered by the end of the movie, not even Ek Haseena Thi. Loud Punjabi parents make their entry in this one too with new word in their vocabulary Jalandhar-pana.
I do not know whose idea was it to cast Himesh as Monty (a role made iconic by Rishi). Whoever it is but this could be the worst case reported of casting; even worst than that of Amitabh Bachchan as Gabbar. Rishi was an icon, heart-throb of million girls who had bitches named Neetu which were kicked daily. He made nation dance to his ‘Om Shanti Om’ and ‘Ek Haseena Thi’ and later now is pulverized beyond mend by Himesh. Even DJ Suketu’s remix sounds thousand times better. He confessed before the release that “Rishi is the best-looking Monty and I am the worst. I hope that audience accepts me this age Monty.” Sorry to inform but we do not.
Himesh, after showcasing his shaved bare-chest in autobiographical Aap Ka Suroor, goes a step further in Karzz and does a whole makeover by getting hair silkier and legs much slimmer than both the heroines. There is stiff competition amongst the trio as who got the better shade of lipstick.
Urmila as Kamini doesn’t look bitter at all. Simi got nominated for her role. I doubt if Urmila would be. No, I am sure. She won’t be. She looks frail and malnourished. That ghastly blood-soaked red lipstick gave Vampire-on-run feel to her wicked act.
Shweta Kumar is easily forgettable. She has nothing to do. I won’t add apart from this or that. She is nonentity. Her act doesn’t add to the story. And you wonder how that could be? In original, Tina Munim did carry the story forward and she is noticeable unlike Shweta.
The supporting cast in the original was influential and gave a strong hold up to the story. Pran as Kabira, Prem Nath as Sir Judah, Raj Kiran as Ravi Verma and Mukri in the role of principal were as consequential as trio of Monty-Tina-Kamini. Danny, Gulshan, Dino and Asrani played these roles respectively and were sheer rubbish.
Satish Kaushik (Director) agrees that no one can match Rishi’s performance. So much confidence in the beginning it self. Whoa!!! Satish adds, “I can judge between good, bad and amateur performances and I have to admit, he has surprised me with his performance.” Alright Tere Naam was fluke. That’s all I can construe from this statement of yours Satish Ji.
Few classic moments: Tina is singing Monty’s famous song and forgets the lines and soon you see Monty completing the lines. Classic? Because he is on a helicopter and she is on earth. How the hell he heard her singing and forgetting the lyrics? Mashallah.
Monty gets confronted with visuals of his previous life whilst performing and passes out on the stage. The obligatory friend in tow Bakhtiyaar Irani later in the hospital asks him to explain whats-and-hows of the incident. Monty explains, “Main jab guitar ke high notes baja raha tha tab maine kuchh dekha.” Worried friend requests him to play the
‘Guitar ke high notes’ at once. Monty agrees and does the needful. “Yaar maine is baar aur kuchh bhi dekha.” Classic? Guitar ke high notes is directly proportional to images from past life.
I have been lately been intrigued by what not-so-nice-and-gentlemanly words are called and pronounced in various languages and have learnt quite a lot of them and today I want to hurl all those freaking-so-awful-they-are-actually-splendid-to-hear words on every one associated with the movie called Karzz, Ghai-Kaushik-T-Series-and The Three Buffoons.
Something which I read somewhere today:”Karzzzz belongs to a guy who has supreme confidence in his capabilities, and for the fans who agree. For the rest, there is always something on TV. Himesh is sure to stay.”
Alright, time for us to relocate to Somalia.

WHY SO SERIOUS Oxy?
>>>>>Don and Devdas got thumbs up
@oxy:devdas may have got the thumbs up, but i still dont believe tat Don got a thumbs up. srk was not half as good as AB. and all the AB dialogues he mouthed were zero-style delivery and performance, it was so freakin’ srk-ish and not Don-ish. while AB was don in don, srk was srk in don like in every other movie
coming back to karzzzz, it will still go on to become a hit in the absence of better movies. drona and kidnap came a cropper so ppl will go ahead and watch karzzzzzzzzzzzzz ‘z’ no. of times
Oxy, the original Karz worked because of Rishi Kapoor, he perfectly fitted in that pop star mode. As also his acting was good. For me i saw Himesh’s expressions in the promos itself, and have decided to keep away from it. BTW whats got into Urmi, she is doing these kinda B stuff nowadays? Where is the actress of Bhoot,Ek Hasina Thi and Pinjar?
Aur yeh Shweta Kaun???? Maybe she could try her luck down South, in some Telugu or Kannada flick.
Also do check out the Tamil original of Tere Naam, Sethu, if you can. It is one of the best movies of this decade.
Sethu is Sethu today because of one man..Vikram..stupendous performance..
Whats nextttttt? Himesh as JUNGLEE? DISCO DANCER? HIMMATWALA? Even kitsch requires aptitude, guys. I think he should go back to composing. I still love majority of his songs.
Ratnakar, Shweta is the famous Indra Kumar’s ( Dil, Beta ) daughter. You ( public ) unfortunately cannot dictate terms to her :P
The name says it all…Karzzzzz puts you to zzzzzz. My personal rating is a 2/5.

I am surprised that somebody at PFC took time to review this film. I was not expecting anything from this film . I have been ignoring it from the day it was announced and surprisingly I read your review. I heard now he returns with John Mathew Mathan with a remake of Rangeela. God knows what more will come out of that guy…
Drona, Kidnap and Karzz, hmmmmm. picked the lesser of the three evils today…i have the tickets in my hands and gonna watch it with extreme prejudice from what u guys are saying…..o what the heck, its a Sunday! Worst come worst, I’ll have the popcorn in my stomach…..
Should have been ‘Curseee’
:P

Satish Kaushik who is doing a big film on Taansen, the great singer, for Rajashri Productions, has recommended “him” to Sooraj Badjatya for the title role !! I ROTFLed for a while !!!
Don’t watch this unless you want to have nightmares from this lifetime to another.
Rating: D

*contd. from 9:-
3 hours later——-hey guys I’m back, and i must say I have tears in my eyes….the direction is so out of this world, its not even there in the film at all. U get the picture,
As for Himesh, I’m a fan so I have to give him some grace points. His acting needs further grooming but the guy says his lines pretty well. The music and his singing are as amazing as ever. Didn’t like his take on the ‘Ek Hasina Thi’ track, though. One song in particular, ‘Mashallah” was simply magical, in my opinion.
The rest was so bad that it is going to take some considerable courage on my part to enter theater again soon…..
@ RR, Serious? May be cuz I was asked to be by PFC unlike the original here http://blessed-curse.blogspot.com/, which was sent back stating looked more himesh-bashing than movie-bashing. Fair enough! so what you have here is the modified version.
@ Crazyrals, I hated second Don, but I was just going by the facts n stats. SRK unlike himesh did not get bashed by almost all.
@ Ratnakar, U bet man, I have seen ‘Sethu’ and also the other remake Huccha in Kannada. But nothing can beat the Sethu.
@ Manu, I guess KCP has revealed what next!!! Lolz,
@ KCP, Taansen??? Bujhe huye diyon ko jalaana to durr ki baat, Jalte huye diye bujh jayenge agar himesh taansen banega toh.
@ Judgegag, yes we got the picture buddy.
@Oxy: Went to your original blog review, and the question still remains: Why so serious?
ITS A GOOD MOVIE…. MUCH BETTER THAN APP KA SUROOR.
WELL DONE HIMESH.. WELL DONE.. !!:)
heyy……..I loved your review!!!! Have been hunting for a review that matched with what I thoughf of the film…. and finally found it!!!!!
i have no issues if Satish Kaushik and Himesh Reshamiyya, want to do another dozen odd Karzzzzz’s, but what right do they have to make a mockery of a such a legend like Tansen. This is plain disgusting.
@ Jahan, Is it? If you mean why am I taking this guy and his movies so seriously as it’s known he cannot for sure act and it’s useless talking of him then I accept I was serious.
@ Arti, Thanks
@ Ratnakar, Someone had mentioned in my Drona review that what right do we have if anyone makes a sequel, so I guess same goes in this case.. Let them make Taansen.. What right do we have to stop them from doing so.. I am already imagining gym toned Himesh in dhoti with chest adorned just with jewels a la actors of Ekta’s Mahabharat..:)
@ Oxy, yeah cant really stop em. But seriously, this would be like Paris Hilton, playing the role of Queen Elizabeth.
Anyway the latest buzz as per Mumbai Mirror is that Abhishek Bachan would be playing role of Tansen. But Ab Jr does not suit in period epics, like his dad. He was a total misfit in Umrao Jaan.
i meant unlike his Dad.
@ Ratnakar, Ah!!! so from one jerk to another. It’s like you take any known face and there will be some detractors for that person so why can’t they just take a total new comer? Our makers shy away a lot.
Totally agree with crazyrals. New Don was one of the wierdest movies of current times. The so called twist in the end was absolutely stupid. It clearly showed that this is not Farhan Akhtar’s genre and he is well off doing his ‘buddy’ movies. And what can one say of Shahrukh? So much confidence..so much arrogance..for so little talent? amazing!!
@Oxy, as Jahan said, Why so serious?? This movie is the classic example of how u spend so much money to make such bad films, the recent examples being DRONA and KIDNAP. This kind of movies will always be made, as long as people have money to blow. Hey Oxy would love to read your review of DESHDROHI. LOL. Donno some how this film has gotten into my head. Every time I need a good laugh i go to youtube and see its promo. so whenever u review a bad film remember, it could have been worse!!
@ Puneet, Hmm I guess I took it very seriously!!! Lol.. not that I was expecting much. Btw, I have pasted the link of the original write-up above and what u read here was modified one. Sad that Jahan found both serious..
Deshdrohi, wahi na jisme Zulfi inspector bana hai and manoj tiwari bhi hai.. when is it releasing?
So much money is flowing in the entertainment industry that even a cameraman can make a movie of his own after being associated with a big hit. Bad outcomes are sure to come. Remakes like RGV Ki (Maa Ki) Aag, Karz(+4), Hey Babby are such examples. People with money are realizing their childhood dreams of becmoing a rock star/super star or making a sholay. No one can stop Himesh finishing his dreams of being Montey n Taansen and Satish Kaushik remaking Karz or Baiju Bawra( i just guess, that might be another target of this serial rapist) or Sajid ‘Golu’ Khan being a hero himself.
Just kidding, thanks for ur views as they pretty much match mine.
What else can explain, Satish getting finances for his movies even though never given a hit in his life(I know there was a Tere Naam, for which I will give more credit to Sallu). What else can explain so much money put on Himesh as an actor when there are no such luck for talent like Prateek babbar. What else can explain, SRK, after sponsering a team in IPL, turning a builder, that too in Dubai. So much money flowing there.
I hope there could be a system which makes sure that only quality gets the prize and not just the hype.
No thanks for this review(and folks’ comments) as I would not have watched it any way.
@ 13 judgegag how can anyone be Himesh’s fan……
this is the greatest surprise of my life…..
Sanjay @ 27, I am a fan of Himesh the composer, not Himesh the onscreen torturer.
@oxy[14] : facts and stats … hahahahahaha
aap ka surooor was a hit, u want more
we r discussing serious movie making, not the commerce of it. SRK did get bashed by real movie lovers, not the sycophants or ‘chamchas’ who like everything he does. ppl r ridiculing himesh left right and center; but go by facts and stats the movie will still be a hit; better than drona and kidnap. and himesh is already shooting for his next release.
Sanjay…if this was the greatest surprise of your life, you’re in for a rude shock when you actually get to know how many fans himesh has.
I was in hyderabad till mid 2007 and himesh was all over the place. And hyderabad was just a representation. I’m sure you’ll have tens of himesh fangroups in forums like orkut, facebook et al. and each with thousands of members.
By the way, makes me think of tata indicom’s latest campaign running on tv these days. They’ve picked up people like karan johar, himesh etc. The theme of the ad is these celebrities ranting on how they would’ve never succeeded had they listened to all and sundry. And that they’re successful because they listened to their heart…Dil ki baat suno (Indicom’s latest tagline).
@ Crazyrals[29].. and so is SIK, Race, Jannat and many mindless flicks. Yes, Karzz will be a hit, super duper hit and as the reports come that he might do ‘Taansen’ I say he would suck for sure in that as well.. He can be a good composer (mind you, can be.. he is still not).. What he composed so far are chart busters that are easily forgotten, but he can never be a good actor.. have you seen him enacting any scene which demands a loud shriek or scene where the dialogue is lengthy.. He jumps.. u can see his whole body going few inches above the ground and his uneven shoulders shaking at the same time.. SRK too has faced the flak always and will continue to as long as he acts (maybe even after he dies). I too am not a big supporter of him as I love to hate him. But it can not be denied that he did make impression with Don in many minds. If not in yours and mine as we cannot fathom anyone else other than AB as don but definitely in those who had no clue that there was a don earlier. And now you will say same goes for Himesh, as not many would have seen (or may be aware of) Rishi’s Karz. Let me tell you then than SRK at least has some personality which Himesh lacks completely. They both ham, they both are egoistic, they both carry this cocky ‘I am the best’ attitude but Himesh overdoes it and will never be able to receive the respect SRK still gets.
i think comparison between SRK and Himesh is unwarranted. SRk already has some wonderful performances in Darr, Kabhi Haa Kabhi Naa, Yes Boss, Chak De India, Swades to his credit. For the life of mine, i could never imagine Himesh doing a Swades or KHKN.
Hmm i also wanna listen to my dil ki baat, and assasinate Himesh Reshamiyya, KJo, will Tata Indicom sign me up please? ;)
@ Ratnakar, right and especially Swades. I had just mentioned Don ‘the movie’ and not SRK ‘the actor’ in review. If people want comparison, let them have it.
KHELE HIMESH KI TARHA ACCHA INSAAN BANKAR DIKHAO PHIR HI US PAR TUM SAB COMMENT KARNA….OH IM SORRY!!!BECOZ TUM SAB SAATH JANAM BHI LELO NA TOH BHI USKE JAISA ACHHE INSAAN NAHI BAN SAKTE HO…..HIMESH K PAAS EK SAB SE KIMATI CHEEZ HAI….USKA ACCHA DIL….JO TUM KABHI BHI NAHI PAA SAKTE…..PHELE KHUD KO DEKHLO TUM SAB KESE HO…BADH MEIN KISI KO COMMENT KARNA…ATLEAST HIMESH KE PAAS HIMMAT TOH HAI SINGER ACTOR BANE KI…AGAR TUM KO ACTION KARNE BOL DE TOH TUM SAB K SAB FATU BANKAR EK CORNOR MEIN MILLENGE…AGAR TUM SAB KUCH KARO AUR TUMHE GALAT COMMENTS MILE TOH TUMHE KITNA FEEL HOGA???? ZINDGI KABHI BHI KISI KO COMMENTS NAHI MARNA CHAHIYE….ABHI TUM HIMESH KI JINTI HASI UDA RAHE HO…YAD RAKHNA TUMHE BHI EK DIN UPPAR JAA KAR KISI KO JAWAB DENE HOGA….MIND IT…….!
What kind of super idiotic comment was that please?
@ Rajat, I did not know that one has to write a review keeping the lead actor’s ACHHA DIL in mind. And those who commented did not know it either.
@oxy[31]:chillax dude. i was not comparing them at all. i was just making the point tat SRK’s don is as sick as Himesh’s Karzz. period. no point in bringing up srk’s performance in darr, dil se, swades etc. both the guys are incomparable. himesh is riding the success wave. when success went to sonu nigam’s head he did try his hand at acting and failed miserably with jaani dushman and love in nepal, thank god for tat. even if one of the movies had been a hit he wud have been motivated to churn out more crap and we wud lose out on some wonderful songs from sonu.
himesh has gotten lucky and we just have to watch how far he stretches it.
and for god’s sake plz dont say things like srk left an impact with his take on don. plz scroll up and read my comment[3]. srk made me cringe everytime he came on screen; and he made a mockery of the rural dialect which AB brought out so well in don. srk is srk in most movies and hardly ever the character tat he portrays, he ends up playing himself
What is surprising is that everyone in the industy is surprisingly, surpised that this movie has bombed. Right from the folks who funded it, to the folks, who relased it and were part of it and to those surprising 15% who formed the opening weekend audience for this “Klassic.”
@ Crazyrals, Alright!!! I chillax and believe that u weren’t comparing them. And as I told already I too feel srk is srk in most of his films. And for Karzzzz, I am hearing reports that it isn’t putting up that great show.
@ Vivek, Awesome…
Jabardast Movie.Even Better than Rishi Kapoor’s Karz
Himesh Rocks. I will give 5/5
MUST watch..
@ oye Rakesh… Thand rakh.. stop dreaming….
My humble request to Himesh, please stop torturing us with your acting stupidity and mindless and tuneless singing, can anyone please suggest him another profession so that he may stop bothering us, I am really scared what he is going to do next
After watching this movie on the way home I have to rent old Karz because i was haunted by his new version….please people i think you all will find a more effective way to waste your money than on this movie ticket
>>>Aur yeh Shweta Kaun???? Maybe she could try her luck down South, in some Telugu or Kannada flick.
@ Ratnakar,
Please care to explain this sentence. As a Kannadiga i found it derogatory. Did you by any chance mean that Telugu & Kannada films are mostly amateurish?
I agree the amount of meaningful quality cinema down here in the south is not of the desired proportion, but to write it off completely in one swipe of an unfair dismissive comment is very hurtful.
@ Lazy-44
I meant, that most of the heroines appearing nowadays in Telugu or Kannada flicks, are Bollywood rejects. At least in Kannada we have good movies comming, but in Telugu movie industry its terrible. 90% of the heroines cant speak a proper dialogue, cant emote, cant act for nuts, and its a torture to watch them on screen.
Naah i was not dismissing Telugu or Kannada movies, but the fact that most of the heroines are Bollywood rejects, just pains me. I think Kannada movie industry is somewhat better we have heroines like Ramya, Daisy Bopanna, but its really bad in Telugu.
