Khoya khoya Chand’s music ….swing to sexy 60’s

Have been waiting for the music since the first promo came out. Its finally out and is such a relief!! Because my head was spinning as dar-e-disco was hammering from right, left and centre. And Saawariya came with huge hangover of Devdas + Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Aaaja Nachale’s songs sounds and looks like as if Salim-Sulaiman, Piyush Mishra and Vaibhavi Merchant have ganged up to kill Madhuri ( didnt like anything except the oye bulbul number)!! Was listening to Johnny Gaddar and Jab We Met only. Rashid Khan’s aaoge jab tum o sajna was in infinite loop since some time.

Now, have got a new song to put in the loop. Have alreday changed my caller tune too. Khoya khoya Chand opens with a terrific qawalli and folksy sound. Its the same magic that music composer shantanu moitra, lyricist swanand kirkire and ajay jhingran created with mann ye bawra in Hazaroon Khwashein Aisi. The title track stands out from the rest of the album. The best one and my favourite. Enough of those idiotic mera dil deewana, parwana, mastana, jal jaana. Now its the time to figure out what the heart thinks and why it behaves the way it does. Swanand’s poetry is all about simple words but talks about many complex issues of life. Sample this….
zindagi sawaloon ke jawab dhundne chali,
jawab me sawaloon ki lambi se ladi mili,
sawaal hi sawal hai ki sujhti nahi gali,
aaj haath tham lo, ki ek haath ki kami khali.

Beautiful way to express the loneliness …aaj haath tham lo, ki ek haath ki kami khali!! swanand’s voice and its rustic appeal works for me evreytime. Would like to hear more of him. Check out the way he says dil to beimaan hai. Now, whenever next time you are frustrated or depressed in life or are trying to look into the mirror to figure out why you did this and that, play this song in the background. Will have someone for company. And trust me, you will forget all those questions.

Yeh nigahein track will take you instantly to the club numbers of the 60’s films. Great arrangements and the way various instruments are used to create the right mood. You can hear almost every instrument thats playing there. Sonu Nigam and Anatara Choudhary voices does complete justice. Great idea to use the voice of Antara….the voice was mischievious quality to it that works well. But its a song that will work wonders with the visuals. Saw the promo on air, Rajat Kapoor playing piano with Soniya Jahan and Soha Ali Khan matching their steps. Am ready to swing too.

Chale Aao Saiyan and Khushboo sa looks like in film songs. Chale Aao is in the form of thumri with bit of bollywoodish twist. As always Shreya excels in those classical numbers. Khusboo sa by Hamsika Iyer will again remind you of those Asha Bhonsle cabaret numbers. The choice of right words and lines make sure that you get into that mood. If i have to choose most impressive new voices this year, Hamsika will surely top the charts. She is the one who sang the lullaby chanda re chanda in Eklavya. But most people thought its either Madhushree or Shreya.

The next two tracks O re paakhi and sakhi piya makes sure that you dont come out of the 60’s mood in anyway. O re pakhi has sonu nigam again wondering about love lost. Sakhi piya has pranav biswas and shreya ghosal’s voice. Pranav’s voice comes with that classical heavy feel and the alaaps makes it haunting to say the least. If hamsika is the new female voice that am in love with, then the male voice is Pranav. Shantanu used his voice in Eklavya first but mostly alaaps i believe. Shreya’s voice flows gently alonside the heavy rendition by Pranav.

Thirak thirak is the last one in the album. I think this will be the closing song of the film also. Its a song that says everything that you will see in the film. Swanand again uses simple words to express some heavy thoughts. But, and a big BUT. I think the voices dont work. Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghosal’s voice has the same problem. No doubt they are great one. But they are so sweet and sometime they go to such a extreme that it starts to shrill. This is what has happened here. My choice would hav been swanand and sunidhi. They would hav taken the song to other level. Its says…..
thirak thirak thirak thirak thirak jaane de kadam,
bahak bahak bahak bahak bahak jaane de kadam,
chal na aaj had se gujar jaye hum,
thirkate bahakte nikal jaye dum(2),
mar jaye, marke bhi ji jaye hum….

It talks about dancing your way to death and you hav sonu and shreya making it sound like romantic number. Its foot tapping number. It required the same feel as sonu did in the song ye dil deewana from Prades. I simply love that song. Or they could have done one more version with swanand and sunidhi. Anyway, its good number and is sure chart-buster. Also, i could not understand why the percussion intro is so long. Almost a minute. Reminded me of that vyjantimala number from jewel thief. May be will get to know when i see the film.

On the whole, Khoya khoya chand is must for music lovers. And if you are like me who still trip on 50-60’s bollywood then you will love this one. One thing that this album has is the wide range. Seven songs each sounding so different and covering lot of sounds of that era. The three numbers kyun apne aap se, ye nighaein and thirak thirak will be on the musical charts for sure. The other four songs are strictly mood numbers that will take you to that golden era in just few seconds. Daniel B George deserves a pat on the back again for some superb work after Johnny Gaddar. Specially in this album, the arrangements play an important part as the mood is created by those bits of sounds playing at the right moments and blending with each other.

Sudhir Mishra has managed to get the sound completely right, now am waiting for the visuals! the big picture! Till then….sip a glass of wine and let the heart wonder…kyun apne aap se khafa khafa zara zara sa naaraaz hai dil….

I like the title track a lot, have been waiting for music release since the trailer hit the TV. Swanand’s lyrics are great, clearly he has the potential of becoming next Gulzar of Indian Cinema.

very suprising that you didn’t take to Saawariya’s music because it has the same quality as 60-s 70-s music had…..very melodious and offbeat numbers….not the usual formula ones…..

    Speaking of Taare Zameen Par…

Kholo Kholo is such an awesome track! That is SEL’s best composition since Dil Chata Hain! And who is Raman Mahadevan? Simply brilliant! And Prasoon Joshi.. should write stuff like this..

Jame Raho – a lot of good surprises in the track.

i do not like the eng bit at the start of mere jahan… but then later on it sounds good…. you know what, it is a good track!

the title track… taare zameen par…is this better than Kholo Kholo?

Kholo Kholo my favorite track of the year – it beats Jaage Raho/Tere Bina from Guru.

    A very decent quality soundtrack.

I completely agree that the music of KKC is superb. Khusboo… and Thirak Thirak are my personal favorites. The amazing thing is that each song is beautiful. Yehnigahein then harks to the melodies of the 1960s… Wonderful. Cant wait for the movie to come out.

where as Sakhi Piya – a very rich tune! it is sort of a good-feel track.

    Hi all,

My first comment in PFC, and what urged me to do so..KKC music what else. Cant get enough of it already.

I love the title song and especially, the line ‘ idhar bhi noch lu, udhar bhi nauch lu, sitare nauch lu..’

Andi totally love ‘Aaoge jab tum’ from JWM, and its picturization was the irony in the movie.

And can I shamelessly admit, I kind of like the badmaash song in sawariya. True that most songs were rehash of devdas and hddcs, but pleasent hearing. Sameers lyrics are what a teenager would pen when cupid strikes first.

    Anyways KKC rules.
