(beautiful, the chhed-chaad is as classical and as mythical as Krishna’s Raslila)

I am not versed in classical but I could take a wild guess of this being a Thumri. The beat goes back and forth while the mood changes almost theatrically from jealousy to love to the sense of strong possessiveness of one’s beloved.

Khoye Khoye Chand
The song catches you almost unawares you with it’s in your face intro. The ‘boli’ format of singing is a welcome break from the conventional shers to kick off qawwalis. The mukhra is fresh, endearing, mixing swing with the 60’s eloquence, the kind where you feel like putting an LP record on and swinging alone at home. Time capsule.

It’s tough to transcend so many moods within one song and maintain the dexterity. And while it’s not even shifting the body like in the case of Johnny or OSO’s Dhoom Taana, it should be interesting to see whether its shown in one length or used in broken pieces in the film.

Swanand Kirkire scores because he is earthy, he sings dil se, much of what was seen in HKA’s ae sajnee re, baawraa mann.

Jazz, femme fatale song, Intehaan ho gayi beat and mood, with the Geeta Bali touch
Heavy bass and intrigue that brings in a narrative tension reminiscent of erstwhile noire
This is my least favorite in the album though.

The beat gives away to a dramatic interlude and the song attains more raciness which is cabaret and more betrayal friendly.

O Re Paakhi
Very Hemant Kumar, has the same emotional results.
The virgin tune, innocent, serene,
nothing could go wrong effect
Minimum piano, heartfelt vocals, very effective for sentimental overflow evenings
This is the best retro effort to hit our times off late…

If you can think of images of Guru Dutt’s cinema, you are close to the song’s divine effect

This song can’t not have a B&W imagery…

O re paakhi sounds like a cross between Moitra’s Bengali outing in Parineeta(soona man ka aangan, piyu bole) and Sonu Nigam’s Rafieque sweet rendition, Kuchh tum socho kuchh hum sochein. Similarities and comparisons aside, it’s a happy marriage, and the effect is almost mesmeric. The song takes you to a realm which is calm and which is serene. It might be Nigam’s most heart-sung offering of the year, definitely a much better effort than OSO’s Main agar kahoon.

Sakhi piya
Pranav Bishwas’s vocals almost hit you like a Jagjit Singh song, the effect is similar to the one Moitra created in ‘Raat hamaari toh’ in Parineeta.

Bishwas falls in the Sultan Khan, Ustad Rashid Khan style of singing, grave dark yet soothing vocals.

This is a very SD Burman treatment, the grand stage songs of Vijay Anand. It would be interesting to know if Moitra has roped in original instruments and players for this one, as the effect almost suggests that.

There is a delightful climactic use of the title song, Sonu and Shreya’s vocals are a delight here as they go to the theme mukhda and back to thirak thirak.

Ye nigaahein
The quintessential jazz party hero wooing the mysterious heroine song.
Moitra showed his prowess with jazz in Parineeta, here he is a tad better as in exploring other areas than only Sunidhi’s magnificent vocals in Kaisi paheli in the former.

The composition is lazy, might put you to sleep as well. But it’s not meant to rev you up exactly either; it’s a song of the yore, so the embellishments come along with it.

Raise a toast to Shantanu Moitra and Sudhir Mishra for giving us one of the best film scores of our times!

    TZP is pure addiction, Subrat Bhai. Its on my ‘Next Change’ frame along with Dus Kahaniyaan’s Poems. May be I am able to get the CD’s today and post TZP’s brilliant lyrics and genuine take on kids, love Prasoon’s allusions of ‘os ki boondein’ with the larger context of taare zameen par as with kids…

    Do check out KKC, Sudhir & Moitra back in form. If you liked the Baawraa Mann trip, this is a much ‘for members only’ extended outing.

    Itne khubsoorat alfaaz ‘bigaadne’ ka man nahi kara, bhai. Let me see if I can do it. Somethings are easier to translate while some are not, I was very much at ease with Guru, lover et al…but ye thoda tedha hai…sample this:

    Great translation! These songs evoke the mood of the film. The time of Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman. The unmuddied innocence of the time,when everybody had stars in their eyes. Sonia Jehan in fact, looks so much like Madhubala in the promos. Can’t wait to see the film.

    Title track is just brilliant…have been hearing to it since morning Tushar…and tell you wat mighta have heard it atleast 50 times and still feel like i havent heard it enough…pure magic in the song..so, addicted to the title song that i havent heard anyother in the album….but..kyooooon khoya khoya chand ki firak mein talasah mein udaas hain dil

    Read the post on HKA’s music.A fine observation of the small but significant scenes and ofcourse the lyrics.The way the Georgy Girl track transforms to a qawwali so effortlessly is pure genious at work.Whenever I hear the original Georgy Girl track,it seems as if Mann ye Bawra will follow.I knew the ghazal,just want to know if the qawwali form has all the para’s.

    wonder if the second para reads:

    Great timing, Ruchi!
    As I received you rcomment, my playlist started ‘khoye khoye’. Anyways, yes, Baawra Man is an indelible memory for me. Thats what I call the perfect marriage between film and music.
    I checked with the song again, it very much sound like ‘ek do ka zikr kya’ in all probability, as you said. On the hindside, I like these little dark zones of songs, they have led to some interesting discussions/arguments on my previous music posts on Guru/No Smoking etc.

    There are songs and SONGS.

    Most of the songs need time and a few listens to grow on me. But Khoya Khoya Chand title track?! The first time I heard it on the radio -even before the song had finished!- I was speechless and thought: “Wow! I need to get hold of this SONG!” :o

    Now that I got the CD for Christmas I can say that I love the whole soundtrack. Sakhi Piya, Yeh Nigahein, Thirak Thirak, O Re Paakhi, Khushboo Sa, Chale Aao Saiyan… Oops! I named them all! :d

    But like OM, I can’t have enough of the title track! You get up to that song and it will surely give you the energy to face the day!

    And yes, I am another one of those who loved Bawra Mann. :)
