KHOYA KHOYA PRINT

Methinks I have to start a coconut breaking session each time I venture out into the snow/rain/sleet and thus dangerous roads for a hat-kay movie.
It happened with No Smoking and it has happened yet again.
Rahu Kalam emo? ‘Iron Leg’ anukunta.
The Gults will get that but you get the gist right?

So I finish a rushed edit with Amina and offer her Pakistan-say-visiting
Khaala, Maamoo, Aapa , saara Khan Khandaan a treat, to watch KKC with moi.
“Ji, 50s kay Film Industry pay bani hai…..
Soha Ali Khan bhi hain…..”
[As an afterthought and bait, they are related in a longwinded Nawabi way]
“Hum nay suna ki Aaja Nachle is good…Madhuri ko daykhay bahuth saal ho gaye”
They must be very very Very distantly related to the Pataudis. No loyalty here.

Good thing they did NOT take up my offer coz as often happens in baday baday shahars:
My ticket counter man unhappy. Yet again. Portending doom.

“Sorry Madam there is no screening for Khoya Khoya Chand today?”
Kyun bhai, Paanch log nahin hain kya, dhoondna shuru karoon?
“No, no we had to cancel the show”

WHAT THE FISH! WHY?
Print is LOST Madam.
LOST maanay?
Lost maanay Kho gaya Madam,
Khoya Khoya Chand Ho Gaya…..

I mean I was forced to buy AAJA NACHLE tickets.
Sheer violence of circumstances.

Tahkeekaat kay baad pata chala that FEDEX is the culprit.

The Print is languishing somewhere between Rockville Pike, where I live,
and DANA BAZAAR, your friendly neighbourhood Indian Dukaan, a few streets away.
All the prints get delivered there since the owners of the shop and theatre- Loehman, are the same.
Some fresh Fedex guy delivered it to the wrong address,WEDNESDAY last.

No one knows of its whereabouts as of now.
I mean who in their right minds would assume it’s theirs?
Itna bada dabba!
So many pounds of what? Dead Bodies?
Next to Dana Bazaar is a Hair Salon!!

It has happened once before, for our INDIAN VISIONS film festival, they delivered HALF;
yes half of the newly colorized NAYA DAUR, the purana part of it.
We were tearing our heads in frustration the afternoon of.
Imagine the first Indian Film Festival in DC and our Star Attraction for all the unclejis and auntijis does a no show.
By Half.
By the by Khoya Khoya Chand was actually supposed to be our Opening Nite film par time pay bani nahin tho we made do with Dosar.

So it was that a very miffed me grunts:
‘Theek hai two for Aaja Nachle’
I head straight for the seats and plonk in despair,
Mayray Saath Hi Aisa Kyun Hota Hai.
Hence the coconut train of thought…….

I mean yaaron I am turning into a pukka NRI.
Despair about that.
India may hoti tho KABHI NAHIN daykhti.

I mean I could have gone for Atonement instead.
To crib about how Joe Wright butchered it.
Read the book 5 years ago when people didn’t even know who Ian McEwan was,
Before his Booker nomination, before Keira Knightly!! Before he even wrote it!!!!
The book is about me isn’t it?
Both Cee and Briony are me, the eternal lover, the hyperactive, overimaginative kid.
I LOVE the book.

Madhuri is finally looking good, yes, my kind of good.
Worry lines, Bad skin, Housewifely. Venusian middle.
Totally identify with her, but to spend the next three hours watching her when I could be chatting with someone more interesting…………….eeeeeeesh!

She was incandescent of course, lighting up the screen, illuminous, effervescent
and she still dances with absolute abandon but koi mujhay samjhaaye ki if this is not ‘naach gaana’ then what is?
Dia says this is “Nritya aur Sangeet!! Humaari Sanskriti” ….!!!
Aisi Sanskriti na ho tho achaa?
Imagine me in Bapatla in a Bosom-heaving Bebe t-shirt: I will be shunted out, Day One!
Par Raja Uday Saab! Sigh!! Kahaan ho aap?

Irshaad:

Jo Dil Ko Bahalaaye, Woh Naach-Gaana
Atma Ko Sahalaaye Jo, Wahi Nritya aur Sangeet!

Adaab

Nalin being Sinhalese and all had not even heard the term Bollywood when I introduced it to him in 1999,
when I first came to DC, ki dekho,I might belong to it someday…….
PUKAAR.
Yes Madhuri waalah.
He was mesmerized.
Is that Alaska? Isn’t she cold? God she is fabulous!
The Cinematography is breathtaking………………
Recent converts ka junoon na poocho math.
I dismissed the film as much as I could. The Fauj part was so SILLY really.
“Why watch it if you don’t like it?”
Array Baaba, thabhi tho,
So I don’t turn into a wide eyed NRI maami, lapping up nonsense.
I HAVE to keep in touch to be objective.

Did ANIL MEHTA direct this?? Incredulous N.
Yes, you know him? Condescending K

“Yes, I think I know Anil Mehta, is his father K K Mehta, Indian Airlines, sister Neelu……?”
Now why would I keep track of Anil Mehta’s FATHER??
If he is the same, he was my senior in school.
My dad, his dad were colleagues.
I’d like to see the film again
NO.

I have to draw the line SOMEWHERE.

Coming to KKC.
The latest report on the theatre’s website, bollywooddc.com, will tell you that the Print is still missing; they are showing it on Mon/Tue AGAR/IF they find it by 7.30 pm.
Fedex is off on weekends na.

So Saturday morning I drag my sleepy self to Landmark Bethesda for Atonement.
Bargain Matinee.
Now any book lover will understand my trepidation at watching one of my favourite works being given life on screen, KK or not.
I planned to hate it anyway.
How can words be captured? Words belong to the mind. They are FREE.
Look what happened to Love in the Time of Cholera!
Except for English Patient I can’t think of another film that has been better than the book.
Anthony Minghella is here too briefly.
And just as I suspected couldn’t forgive the condensation of amazing amazing writing into a 2 bit screen time.
And as suspected cried when Briony [Vanessa Redgrave] says
“ I gave them their happiness, it was an act of kindness”
Atoning for your sins through Art!!
Can you do that ?
Can we erase our real life actions by creating something extraordinary?
Are Artistes above the pale of normal Morality?
I liked the film.
What’s wrong with me?

Nahin Aisa Nahin Ho Saktha.

In the past month enjoyed Jab We Met, OSO, Aaja Nachle.
My NRI-fication is complete.
Mera Kya Hoga?
I need to buy tickets to India, asap, ONE WAY.

Not before I watch Khoya Khoya Chand tomorrow though, assuming the Print is found!

K 3 jee(G)..its long since we had a holden caulfield in our midst…imagine a female version of holden caulfield..reading you..especially..the last 2 posts n this one…point out the flair for salinger”giri” in you..:)..

..n then i searched for your previous articles..n i found some erudition on russian cinema..n alot more..n yes some philosophical see saws with some “real” folks..

…jus want to say that it is rare to find a childish naughtiness n irreverence in a person wid such a breadth of knowledge…n that is the “catcher in the rye” effect u had on me..i guess this is truly what being COOL is all about..

..n hey hope u watch KKC jaldi se..

..n yes keep on writing..its rare to see such non-cynical,naughty n insightful humour these days..

    @ k-3
fight club and requiem for a dream.

also, thanks for the use of the word. remembered how i became me.

  3. Neeraja on December 9th, 2007 2:54 pm

I liked Godfather the movie better than the book.
Didn’t know that Fight club was based on a book!

    @K-3
So you had to watch Aaja Nachle instead of Khoya Khoya Chaand! my deepest sympathies.

Jab We Met was not that bad (at least the first half) but OSO and Aaja Nachle?!!!

  4. Neeraja on December 9th, 2007 2:55 pm

by the way, is there a movie on ‘Catcher in the Rye’?

  5. dabba on December 9th, 2007 3:37 pm

    @ neeraja
from what i know, people have been trying to film Rye for years but Salinger wants nothing to do with the movies and won’t give up the rights. good for him. in my opinion it is unfilmable.

  6. Ashish on December 9th, 2007 9:04 pm

Sorry , but what a badly written piece ! Poor content, poor language and poor analysis. No wonder you could not identify with madhuri, because women living without confidence or below the susbsitence level of an “intellectual astitva” can never appreciate calibre. Sorry again for teh harsh comments, but don’t try to mislead people with inept reviews and comments. Madhuri is 40 and awesomely so !

Definitions of blog on the Web:

A BLOG is a publication of personal thoughts, experiences, and web links. It is updated frequently and is usually a mixture of what is happening in a person’s life and what is happening on the web or in the media. …

@Ashish & Aditya: Both seem like sore losers to me. Abbe chutiye log, this is not a “make you understand” rapidex class. People write in “their” blogs about their experiences and thoughts. Some connect and some do not connect. Like I don’t connect with Bhavani Iyer’s articles but I never tell her that its bullshit! It’s their space and they can write whatever she wants to!!

Kavita garu: Lovely post! Really…Was smiling when reading about the lost print! haha!

@Ashish once more…abbe howley..This was never a review…gaandu pehle jaake review kya hotha hain seekh….Kavita never mentioned this was a review…

btw loved ur post and keep writing this regularly

  12. Subrat on December 10th, 2007 9:51 am

K3 - You have earned a fan for life. 3 reasons:
    1. Stream of consciousness tone
    2. The way you write Hindi in the English script (Mayray for Mere). But who’s to say what’s right.
    3. Cross references to literature though I did mind when you said that you discovered Ian McEwan 5 years ago with Atonement. Humne kham-a-khan ‘Black Dogs’ or ‘Enduring Love’ dus saal pahle padha

All in all, keep writing and we will keep reading

  13. Mainak on December 10th, 2007 10:17 am

Films which are better than the book -

    1) Trainspotting
    2) Kubrick’s FIlms
    3) Diving Bell & the Butterfly
    4) Fight Club
    5) Sin City :)
    6) GET SHORTY :-)
    7) GODFATHER

THE ENGLISH PATIENT is a bad boring film. Anthony Mighella is the most overrated director I’ve ever known. He seems like a very well read guy who comes from a well to do family. Has not experienced much of real life. His only experience of life seems to be from literature. Watch his latest “Travesty” called BREAKING & ENTERING. He has managed to make Juliette Binoche act like she has no clue.

BTW How is Atonement? Great reviews everywhere. But it looks like another ENGLISH PATIENT to me. Hence I’m staying away from it :)

  14. Mainak on December 10th, 2007 10:25 am

    BTW K3
    Read this book
The Conversations: Walter Murch and the Art of Editing Film.

Its a conversation between Walter Murch & Anthony Mighella. Very good book.

Nice one K3….Meeru Baptla ki velli ala arusthe meeku picchi anukuntaremo….Next time meeru anukuna cinema chusthe $21 dollars hundi lo vestha ani Mokkandi…who knows all you need is some divine intervention to stop your “NRI-Fication”….

Avunu mee producer hunting yentha varaku ochindi??? any luck???

  16. george on December 10th, 2007 12:12 pm

GODFATHER .. better than the book .. Mainak Bhaiyya .. must disagree!!!

Book is still god level !!!

major fault for me was .. characterisation of “luca brasi”!!!
there are many things i felt cud have been included in the movie and made better!! “marlon brando ” cud bing out say 90 % of the character that was essayed in the novel!! other than that most characters had short falls except for Micheal corleone!!! his transformation was shown very well!! actually it kinda revolved arnd him

  17. george on December 10th, 2007 12:16 pm

    and one more thing … do u like .. kubrick’s “2001: space odyssey” ?? well if u do ??

then i dont understand how “english patient” cud have been boring !!

i am not sayin that “english patient” was not slow .. it indeed was … but u said u liked all of Kubricks films .. so i wonder .. “2001 : space odyssey”??? ..i watched most parts of the movie in fast frames and still the movie was slow!!! ;)

  18. Neeraja on December 10th, 2007 3:39 pm

    hmmmn…Salinger is intelligent.
I would have loved to see someone like Edward Norton in the role of Holden Caulfield(I say someone like him because he is too old for the role)but of course there is a 99% chance that they will ruin the story.

  19. srishti on December 10th, 2007 5:26 pm

    kavitha garu,
i dont think u can watch the movie trrow too if u r gonna watch it at loehmanns.

Machhar you are true to your name. If blogs are free expressions of opinion, so are blog comments. People will react to stands adopted and tear it apart or go gaga over it -whatever they please. Don’t bring sleaze into a blog page, it is not criticism but filthy language users like you who mess up the goodness of blogs. Go wash your mouth.

  22. kavita on December 10th, 2007 9:54 pm

    Accha Baba lado math :)

Ashish : you have every right to express what you feel, most definitely on my post. Please do so.
Just to clarify though I wrote a WHOLE para praising Madz.I like her man.
Had a problem with Naach-Gaana being passed off as Nritya aur Sangeet…..
    kyun ki
if there is ONE thing I know, its that.Thats TWO:)

Aditya: Agree about poor analysis, poor review
[ review it was NOT, I tagged it as GOSSIP for God's sake ]
but poor writing, yaar dil dukha diya :(
maybe for ‘mindful’ stuff you should try
    THICH NAHT HANH??

Anyways trying to be a STHITHAPRAJNA:
    ie
to have equanimity and poise both in praise and in criticism! Zarra Mushkil Hai,

The high after reading Anupam’s comment totally came crashing down but I am trying….wish me luck!!

    Neeraja:
I know yaar, saat samundar paar raho tho jaano:(

Madhu : those were my deepest, most anguished thoughts, If SAPPHO sayz so, well I guess, ahem….
[clearing my throat in mock humility]

Dabba/Mainak: thanx for your suggestions will do the watchings but Errrr…..I was talking of LITERARY WORKS :) Sorry shld have specified!!
Thanx for putting Sin City and Godfather in brackets.

George:Mary Aunty ko namaste, bring her on PFC na.

Subrat: I am ashamed of the company I am keeping
    these days,McEwan 10 years ago.We should meet:)
    Sandor Marai? Saramago? Lhosa?
    Say NO to something: PLEASE:(((

    Varun: inka laydu:(
par saari kaayanat isi koshish may lagi hai :”>

    Harish/Maruramu: Chaala Thanx!

Srishti : yeah I checked NO PRINT yet,
    ento ee batuku!

Domagaaru: Aapka kya karen? Kabhi Villain Kabhi Knight…..
    you are beyond my comprehension!!

  23. kavita on December 10th, 2007 9:59 pm

oh and mainak ATONEMENT if you have read it, then do NOT watch it, but if you haven’t read it then also do NOT watch it….
either way unless you are burning with a desire to see CEE and Briony on screen do NOT watch it.

Its TOO well made, so do not watch it:)

  24. NoVaDJ on December 10th, 2007 11:08 pm

The main problem I had with the blog is that I don’t speak Hindi so I missed out on half of it!

….but I do live in your area, so hope to meet you at the theater sometime before they lose more films;)

  25. kavita on December 11th, 2007 7:59 am

    NoVaDJ

Apologies if you lost out on the Hindi bit but that is the idea see?
To make more people aware of different languages and sounds!
This should make you want to learn the language a wee bit more….ie watch more films.
    Twisted yes but it works.

If you are from the US you wouldn’t know but ENID BLYTON is a major source of fanciful imaginings for kids growing up in India and the old lady would fill her novels with FRENCH, with NO EXPLANATIONS!

K3 - Sandor Marai? Saramago? Lhosa? yes to all 3. Now I am surprised with you for Marai. Very few works and little known outside East Europe and the only reason I read him is because of Slavic connections of late.

Llosa - only read one, The War of the End of the World. Saramago - he’s been with me for as long as McEwan.
    What about Pamuk and Mahfouz?

  32. Neeraja on December 12th, 2007 10:44 am

so it was plain misfortune that my nose was buried in other pleasures
    while Marai languished undiscovered!

Saramago, unfortunately came to me on a rebound…
THE CAVE, but its turned into true love , waiting for more of him.

Pamuk: I am giving him a miss till the euphoria dies.
Mahfouz: Palace Walk / Midaq Alley was all I cld digest.

these loehmanns people are complete idiots.. especially the lady who owns the theater.. i watched no smoking in the theater with her and she was talking on the phone during a major chunk of the movie.. good thing she was sitting nowhere near me or else i would’ve given her a piece of my mind (mostly bc she doesn’t seem to have one)

@36 K3 - Reading Arwood in reverse chronological order. Started with Blind Assassin. Read Edible Woman after it and didn’t like a wee bit. Then discovered her real talent, Oryx and Crake and The Handmaid’s Tale. She does the imaginative dysfunctional world bit well.
Kingsolver - woh genre se dar lagta hai. Let me know if it’s worth a look
Brookner - reasonably well thumbed but depresses me. Tyler - only the Geena Davis movie Accidental Tourist, nothing else.

Alexander McCall Smith - Between 2004-05, he was my essential in-flight companion. Absolutely, loved them and Isabel Dalhousie is a personal fave since I started with The Sunday Philosophy Club and just loved its pace, Edinburgh description and the way she would mix whodunit with why-on-earth-we-are-her thoughts (and critiquing those ETHICS articles).

Hmmm. Isabel Dalhousie, Algeria, Atwood/Tyler/Kingsolver/Brookner. It is starting to make sense now

    @53 Subrat
Margaret Atwood - Alias Grace? Cat’s Eye ?
She writes EVERYTHING, poems/literary criticism/shorts/children’s books
She is among the greatest we have right now.

Anita Brookner - depressing yes, I love Dark :)
Rules of Engagement and Falling Slowly!!
How does she do it? What an eye.
    Two characters and 200 pages…..

Ann Tyler - Back when we were grown ups, Amateur Marriage. Fascinating. Slow. Almost trembling prose.

Kingsolver - Bean Trees, Animal Dreams,
Poisonwood Bible. I understand your apprehension, the first two are a very different attempt at writing the roadie…PB is set in Africa-its not the same.

The German Professor is good too!
    The Villa of Reduced Circumstances…….

    Alice Munro/Marie Correlli/Coetzee?

@54 K3 - Seems like a tennis game and I am forever returning serve :) Coetzee is intense and Disgrace left me drained. Munro!!! What an amazing story teller. First read her in New Yorker and then read Who do you think. Correlli-haven’t read her at all. I thought Pat Barker would have figured somewhere in that list of yours.
My service game: Beckett/Byatt/Milosz? Or let me go off the beaten track - Lermontov (Hero of Our Time) or if you like Alexander MS then you’d like Paul Auster (New York trilogy) as well. Or what abt Pynchon bhai (Mason & Dixon)?

    Love-1!
    advantage Subrat.

    No to Barker/Aster/Lermontov :((

Thank God at least I heard of Pynchon BEFORE you mentioned him,one of those JNU types told me about him recently…

Seems like I will be spending more time at the libraries in 2008, thanks to you!!

    Wislawa Szymborska?
