Khoye Khoye Chand ki talaash me..

At last there is a lovely sad song coming out of “khoya khoya chand” – “khoye khoye chaand ki talaash me firaq me udaas hai ye dil”….great lyrics and the music…mind blowing…and the way they connected this song to Majaz’s poetry .. “ji me aata Hai ye murda chaand tare noch loon is kinaare noch loon us kinaare noch loon…”it’s unbeleavable…These verses are from Majaz’s poetry “awara” which is the most popular nazm of Majaz . The gist of the opening lines “Shaher ki raat aur main nashaado nakaara phirun..jagmagaati jaagti sadko pe awaara phiru. ae ghame dil kya karu ae bahishte dil kya karu..” is very much similar to the song “khoye khoye chaand ki talaash me..”
yeh manjilein bhi khudahi tay kare,
yeh faasalein bhi khudhi tay kare
jindagi sawaalon ke jawaab dhudnein chali
jawaab mein sawaalon ki ik lambi si ladi mili
sawaal hi sawaal hain sujhti nahi gali
ke aaj haath thaamlo ik haath ki kami khali

I always likes Swanand for this. The depth Swanand brings into his poetry is always amazing. Be it in bawra mann” or in the songs of “parineeta”.or “pal pal” in LRM (except laga chunari me daag)…. Now with Khoya Khoya Chand he rocks with his music blended lyrics…the song “chale aao saiiyan” sung by Shreya is another beautiful song…the song “ o re pakhi” is another milestone in lyrics writing..I just loved the words of the song…Since he is also a good singer and a musician he has a great sense of musical words and knows how to use them of which most of the lyrics writer could not …with Swanand I feel strongly that he could bring the saahir ludhivanvi or qateel shifahi’s or Shakeel badayani’s lyrics age back.. The music of the song “khoye khoye chand ki talaash me” is actually a different way to present the form of the ghazal…Like Madanmohan who was the first to change the style of ghazal .. be it the song “ aaj socha to aansoo bhar aaye” written by Kaifi Azmi from “hanste jakhm”, “aapki nazaro ne samjha” written by Raja mehandi ali khan from “anpadh” ..the evergreen “dil dhoondhta hai”…what a chemistry between music and the lyrics…the feeling of the lyrics comes from the music….Along with MadanMohan ….there was Khayyam- “aankho me humne aap ke sapne sajaaye hai”, “aap yun hi faaslo se gujarate rahe (a wonderful song penned by Jaa Nisaar Akhtar)..and the song from Bazaar “dekh lo aaj humko jee bhar ke”…The song from “Umrao jaan”..justjuu jiski thi usko to na paaya humne”

The another maestro was Ravi.who has composed some beautiful ghazals into songs…like “aage bhi jaane na tu”, The cult “ae meri johra jabi..and the beautiful songs from nikaah…beete hue lamho ki kasak saath to hogi”.and “dil ke armaa aansuo me beh gaye”The another one was.- “chalo ek baar phir se ajnabi ban jaaye hum dono”. Ravi has also composed “chaudahi ka chaand ho ya aaftaab ho”..and “dekha hai jindagi ko” These were some of the music director who changed the rules of ghazal and converted them into songs..I think Swanand is the best in today’s scenario who could do this..
A few words for Majaaz…Jaa Nisaar Akhtar and Javed Akhtar comes from the same family to which Majaaz belongs but Majaaz Majaaz never had money to cure his diseases and died ultimately in the roof of an interstate bus..a death he did not deserve for sure..
“bahut kuchh aur bhii hai jahaa.N me.n
ye duniyaa mahaz Gam hii Gam nahii.n hai”

“bataane vaale vahii.n par bataate hai.n ma.nzil
hazaar baar jahaa.N se guzar chukaa huu.N mai.n”
Majaaz

Nice post Dipankar. Am quite impressed with KKC songs. After a long time there is an album which I want to hear again and again. As I don’t have very good understanding of music, my liking and disliking of a song mostly depends on it’s lyrics.

Swanand rocks. As I said earlier, he has the potential of achieving the status Guljar has.

    Great post Dipankar
`Chale Aao’ reminds me of Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’s “Koi door se awaaz de chale aao”…and your bringing in memories of Majaaz’s lyrics made me look for more…

“ek mahal ki aad mein nikla wo peela mahtab,
jaise muflis ki jawani, jaise bewa ka shabaab!!!”

    AMAZING!!!!!

How did I miss this article!
    Thanks!
I read somewhere that Majaz died on the roof of a hotel.
All accounts seem to suggest that he died on roof…on the top,all alone, immmediate cause of death cold.

Madanmohan, the king of ghazals gave a separate dimension to the sweet voice of Lata. Most of his compositions had ghazal andaz and Lata could use her classical base with her expression to provide life in the compositions.
