Khushboo: Fragrance of love, wait, sacrifice and moral right in the relationship

First thing first, KHUSHBOO is a PERIOD film, based upon the story of Sharat Chandra Chatterjee. So no new definitions can be imposed on the characterisation/s. It is set in an old time and hence has to be seen in that manner only.

Once selected a story, the thing which matters is the fact how convincingly a director has shown his chosen story. Story may not look convincing in a period film because times are changed but good directors have that skill where they keep grip on the visual story telling factor and audiences are soaked deeply in to the visual watching of the film and whether story is feasible in the present circumstances or not, ceases to matter for audiences.

Practices like Childhood marriages or fixing the marriages for children are not in the fashion now a days but this absence can not stop audience to enjoy the films based on such stories if they are made nicely and director has the capability to sway away the audiences with the flow of his film. Audiences should be transported in to the atmosphere which is shown in the film.

And Khushboo does that quite successfully.

Apart from Gulzar Saab’s so good direction and Pancham Da’s wonderful music, Khushboo’s major attraction is the characterization of Kusum, Hema Malini’s character in the film, and the very good performances by Hema Malini, Jeetendra and Master Raju.

Main Characters - Actors
Kusum – Hema Malini
Brindavan - Jeetendra
Charan – Master Raju
Kunj – Asrani
Brindavan’s mother – Durga Khote
Manno – Farida Jalal
Lakhi – Sharmila Tagore

A literature based period film, Khushboo, shows us the sad and long wait of a young woman, Kusum (Hema Malini) who has been abandoned by her in-laws because of the problems generated between her parents and her husband’s parents.

Since the very first scene Hema Malini brings surprise after surprise with her performance. Kusum’s sadness, ego, happiness, stubbornness, self respect, self destruction, zeal to survive, struggle and determination to get the desired result, Hema Malini has made alive every trait of this character.

Sholay was also made almost at same time and here in Khushboo, she plays an entirely different and rather opposite character to the Basanti of Sholay.

Kusum’s marriage was fixed in her childhood with her friend Brindavan (Jeetendra). Parents of Kusum and Brindavan were close friends and they had decided about marriage of their children but due to some property disputes relationship between Kusum’s father and Brindavan’s father were soured and Kusum’s father was died in a fight and Brindavan’s father was implicated for this and when after some years, Kusum’s mother had taken Kusum to Brindavan’s home, Brinda’s father broke the relationship and insulted both, mother and daughter.

Kusum has high self esteem. She burns her hand where she had a tattoo of Brindavan’s name.

Some years later, Brindavan comes back in to the life of Kusum. Now he is a qualified doctor and he has a son also but his wife has been died. He meets Kusum and now it’s the story of ups and downs in the relationship between Kusum and Brindavan and whether Brindavan and Kusum will unite again or not?

Dr Brindavan has come to see a rich lady in the village of Kusum. He sees there Kusum but he does not identify her. She also does not recognise him as both are meeting after 15 years.
Rich lady’s son address him by his name Brindavan and then Kusum realises that he is infact her husband.

Brindavan suspects that old lady may suffer from plague and he suggests that all the people in the home including servants should be given injections. He holds the hand of Kusum to convince her to take injection and he finds the burnt skin and asks how it is burnt. She does not answer and goes away.

He comes back to his village and finds at home that his son Charan is playing with a new toy and he asks from where he got the toy and Charan says,” Mama ne diya hai”.

Brindavan asks him,” Kaun mama”.

Brindavan’s mother (Durga Khote) tells him that Kunj (Asrani), brother of Kusum, with whom his marriage was happened in childhood but Gauna was done and later marriage was broken by his father (Om Shiv Puri), has given him the toy as he sells the things in this village also and often gives toys to Charan freely.

Brindavan becomes curious about Kusum and asks more about Kusum. He says that today he had met a girl in other village and whose name was Kusum.

On other side, Kusum tells her friend Manno (Farida Jalal) about Brindaban that today she had met him.

Manno asks her if Brindavan had recognised her and if he comes to take her home then will she go with him?

Kusum says,” Mein kyon jaungi. Mujshe pyar kiya hota to kisi aur se shadi kyon karte shahar jakar. Mein itnee bhee gayee gujari nahin hun. Suhag bhee lun to bheekh mein?”.

Next day Brindaban goes to see the sick lady in the Kusum’s village and takes Charan also with him. There he meets with Kusum and asks her if she recognises him. She says that she very well recognises him and leaves the place. She sees Charan playing outside and takes him with her.
She gives him sweets to eat and when Charan asks for water she says that if he calls him Mother then she will give him water.

This is most amazing scene in the film and has a very raw appeal as mostly directors don’t take scenes in this manner and try to force their actors to act in a certain way but here Gulzar Saab has left almost free Hema Malini and Master Raju after explaining them the scene and they have enacted the scene as if there was no camera looking at them and they were behaving in real.

Charan tries to hold glass and Kusum tries to keep glass in her hands and at same time insists continuously that Charan should address her once as Mother.

This sweet fight is going on and on and is stopped only when Brindavan reaches there. Hearing his sound, Kusum leaves the hand of Charan and he runs away and She is standing there as if caught red handed and all her smiles are vanished in a moment and she says an excuse that Charan was asking for water.

Sick lady tells Brindavan about Kusum that she has not married and still she is waiting for the husband whose family had abandoned her years ago.
Brindavan becomes disturbed on knowing this.
Brindavan says that she should give him water. She gives him glass.
Situation is complex. Kusum is angry with Brindavan and his mother but she loves Charan.
Back at home, he asks his mother if this old relation can be revived again because Kusum has not married yet and is waiting for him only. Next morning when Kunj arrives in their village Durga Khote sends Charan to call Kunj and complains that Kunj comes in their village but never comes to meet her and always give toys freely to Charan.
Kunj says excuse that he remains very busy in his work and if he has to earn then is this the only house from where he should earn money because its his home only.
Durga Khote is pleased to know that Kunj still remember the old relation.
In the evening while eating Kunj tells Kusum that today Brindavan’s mother had called him and she said that she did not like the fact that Kusum is still unmarried.
Now begins another amazing scene.

Back at home, when Kunj tells Kusum all the talks he had with Brindaban’s mother, Kusum objects immediately and scolds Kunj,” Unhe sharm nahin ayee mujhe kunwari kehte huye aur tum bhee chupchap sunte rahe”.
Kunj,” Par wo to yahee mante hain na ki jab gauna nahin hua to shadi poori kahan huyee”.
Kusum,” Unhone keh diya aur tumne man liya. Kya Ma bhee aisa hee manti thee. Agar mantee to mujhe kyon le jatee unke ghar“?
Kunj,”Nahin ma to nahin mantee thee par…
Kusum,”tum kyon gaye unke ghar, kya tumhe yaad nahin kaise un logon ne meri aur ma ko ghar se nikal diya tha”.
Kunj,” Kusum, agar purani baton ko kuredne baithenge to sulah kaise hogi”?
Kusum,” Sulah! tumse kisne kaha tha sulah karne ko”?
Kunj,” Mein to teri khatir gaya tha, warna mujhe kya parhee hai ki mein unke ghar jaon”.
Kusum,” Tumhe meri fikar karne kee jarurat nahin hai.“
Kunj,“ Teri samajh mein to kuch ata hai nahin
Kusum,“ Mujhe samajhne kee jarurat nahin hai. Aur tumharee jo samajh boojh hai mein wo achchi tarah se jante hun. Jiske ghar dudh mil gaya peene ko usee kee munche laga leein“.
Kunj,“Par ..“
Kusum“ Rehne do bhaiya. Lao glass do
Kunj,” par mein to teri bhalai ke liye hee …aur mein umra mein tujhse bada hun, tujhe meri baat sunni chahiye.”
Kusum,” Tum rehne do Bhaiya. Lao glass do aur haath dho lo“.
Kunj,” Dho lete hain bhai
Kusum,” aur kal se badalgaon jane ki jarurat nahin hai. ek badalgaon mein saman na bechane se hum bhukhe nahin mar jayenge”.

Next morning Kusum does not find Kunj at home and he has left home without taking breakfast and he has left his lunch box also.

Manno tells Kusum that she has seen kunj going on work.

After work Kusum is resting when she hears the knocking on the door.

She finds Charan standing there with Durga Khote. She does not understand what to do and say. But after some moments she welcomes Durga Khote and touches her feet.
She is relaxed because of Charan’s presence and starts talking with him.

She offers to bring something to drink and Durga Khote lies on the bed and says that she will eat at lunch time as she has come to spend whole day here.

Kusum is in trouble now as she does not have anything to cook. She goes out of the room and finds Brindavan standing at the door. She gets to know that Kunj had invited the family for lunch. She sends him inside the room and after some time calls Charan and asks him to send Brindavan to her.

He goes and says,” Baba wo bula rahee hai”.
Brindavan,” Wo, wo kaun”?.
Charan turns towards Durga Khote and says,” wo jo kehtee hai ki ma bolo tab paani dungi”.

Hearing this Brindavan and his mother smile and Brindavan goes to Kusum.

Kusum explains to him that because Kunj is not at home and she can not go to market. Brindavan asks her to tell what is to be brought from the market.

She is not ready to say things directly. She says that Kunj had left early and money was in his pocket.
Brindavan,” Jis adhikar se saman lane ke liye kaha tha, use paise kee baat karke kam mat karo. Batao kya kya lana hai.”
Kusum,” Maanji sunnengi to kya bolengi.
Brindavan,” Mein itna nasamajh nahin hun. Mein ma se bol kar ja raha hun ki chaudhrain ko dekhne ja raha hun. Saman gaarhi mein bhijwa dunga“.
Kusum,“ Jaldee bhijwa dena. Mujhe pakana bhee hai. Maanji ko bhukh lagee hogee. Aur khud bhee jaldee aa jana. Wahin mat baithe rehna sare din.
Brindavan smiles and goes out.
While leaving Kusum says,” Maanji, aapki kuch sewa nahin kar payee. Jo rukha sukha ban pada bana diya.
Nahin kusum , achcha tha. Ab to tere hee haton ka khana hai.
Durga Khote gives gold bangles to Kusum and says,” ye Shagun ke hain. Baki sab batein mein Kunj se kar lungi. Use mere pas bhej dena kal.”
Kusum is stunned on the bangles but she does not say anything.

At home, Brindaban asks his mother what she said to Kusum.
Are use kade diye aur Keh diya ki kunj ko bhej dena mere paas.
Brindavan,” Man, tumhe khud kuch kehna chahiye tha. Tum Kusum ko nahin jantee. Wo bade swabhiman wali ladki hai“.
Are chhodi huyee stri ko uska pati phir se apna le isse badee baat kya hogee. Mein jo use phir se use apnee bahu bana rahee hun. Ye kya kam badee baat hai.

Brindavan knows inside that Kusum will not be agree on this condition. But he is helpless before his mother and maintains silence.

In the evening Kunj comes fearing that Kusum will scold him.

He pretends as if he does not know anything. Kusum also pretends that nothing happened in the day time.

He asks while eating,” Koi Ayya to nahin tha.”.
Kusum,” Nhain to. Koi anew ala tha kya”.
Kunj,” Nahin, Mein jaldee chala gaya tha na isiliye pooch raha tha. “
Kusum” Maanji aur Charan aur wo aye the badalgaon se
Kunj,” Achcha, kya keh rahe the”.
Kusum,” Kuch nahin. Kal badal gaon jaoge
Kunj,“ nahin mera to koi irada nahin hai. Tujhe kuch kaam ho to…
Kusum,” Kal chale jana. Maanji ko ye kade de dena. Nahate wakt utar kar rakhe the, yaheen bhul gayeen”.

Next day an ignorant Kunj carries the gold bangles and gives them to Durga Khote, who understands the indirect refusal of Kusum. She is angry. Brindavan is also disturbed. His mother says that now she will look for another girl.

Brindavan and Charan reach at Kusum’s village and Charan goes to Kusum, who is standing at the bank of river with Manno.
Charan,” Agar Ma bolun to laddoo khilaogi”?

Brindavan,” Charan chalo. Logon ko pareshan mat kiya karo”.

Kusum,”Manno, tu keh de charan ko hamare pass chhor dein baad mein aa jayega.”
Manno,” Doctor Baboo. Charan ko hamare pass rehne do. Hum baad mein pahuncha denge”.
Brindavan,“ Theek hai par jaldee pahuncha dena mujhe jaldee jana hai“.

Kusum is happy. Manno is happy to see her friend happy and ist a perfect situation for a song like
Bechara Dil Kya kare

And so wonderful lyrics to describe the situation of Kusum’s feelings.

Bechaaraa Dil Kyaa Kare, Saawan Jale, Bhaado Jale
Do Pal Kee Raah Nahee, Yek Pal Ruke, Yek Pal Chale

Gaanw Gaanw Me, Ghoomei Re Jogee, Rogee Change Kare
Mere Hee Man Kaa Taap Naa Jaane, Haath Naa Dhare

Tere Waasate Laakho Raasate, Too Jahaa Bhee Chale
Mere Liye Hain Teree Hee Raahe, Too Jo Saath Le

How Manno (Farida Jalal) sings the feelings of Kusum (Hema Malini) in this song!

Gaanv gannv——–haath na dhare [Wanderer visits different villages and cures the patients but he does not know the heat of my feelings and does not pay attention to me]

Tere Waste—- too jo saath le [ You have many options wherever you go but I have got only one option to follow you but only if you take me along with you]

Brindavan reaches at Kusum’s home and knocks at the door.

Kusum,” Charan kha raha hai aur abhi uske kapde bhee nahin sukhe hain
Brindavn,” kyo kya hua kapdon ko
Kusum,” Nadi mein nahne gaya tha”
Brindavn,“ Kha le to aise hee bhej dena
Kusum,” Andar akar baith jao. Char log dekhenge bahar khade huye
Brindavan,”Char log andar jate huye bhee dekhenge
Kusum,“ Mein darwaje par khadee rehkar tumse bahas nahin kar saktee. Andar akar baith jao“
She forces Brindavn to come inside
.

Brindavan goes inside,” Kya pehalwan ji gamcha pehne baithe ho
Charan,” Baba kal tum bhee gamchha lekar ana. Nadi mein nahayenge”.
Brindavan,”Kusum, tum Charan ko roj roj ki adapt mat dalo. Pareshani hogee
Kusum,” pareshani hogee to mere pass le ana”.
Brindavan,”wo tumhe ma bulane laga hai. baad mein poochega to kya samjhaunga
Kusum,” to ma la dena uske liye. Koi mein akeli to hun nahin jise wo ma bulata hai”.
Brindavan,“ Aur kaun hai jise Charan ma kehkar bulata hai“.
Kusum,“ Wo hai na koi banadl gaon mein. Kali“.

Brindavan laughs heavily and says that Kali is the daughter of their cook and she is friend of Charan.
Kusum,” Mein kya jaonun. Charan keh raha tha
Brindavan,“ Vishvas bhee koi cheese hotee hai Kusum“.
Kusum,” Haan ye vishawas hee to tha jo shahr jakar shadi kar lee”.

Brindavan tells her the story Lakhi (Sharmila Tagore) and in which situations he had to marry her.

Kusum is convinced.

Kusum says,“Charan ko yaheen chhor do aaj raat ke lyie. Mein akeli hun aur Charan so bhee raha hai. Kal tum lene aa jana mein Charan ka haath pakad kar aa jaungee”.

Brindavan says to her that she did not do good thing by returning gold bangles and she insulted his mother.

Kusum,” Aur jo meri beijatti huyee, wo kuch nahin. Tum agar meri beijaati na karo to mujhe Maanji ke saamne chhota hone mein koi sharm nahin”.

Brindavan says that he will convince his mother and leaves with a smile.

Kusum is happy and dreams have come in her eyes and hope is spread in her heart.

Song – Ghar Jayegi

Ghar Jaayegee, Tar Jaayegee, Doliyaan Chadh Jaayegee
Mehandee Lagaayegee Re, Kaajal Sajaayegee Re,
Dulhaniyaa Mar Jaayegee

Dheere Dheere Leke Chalanaa, Aangan Se Nikalanaa
Koee Dekhe Naa, Dulhan Ko Galee Me
Aakhiyaan Zukaye Huye, Ghugantaa Giraye Huye,
Mukhadaa Chhupaaye Huye Chalee Mai
Jaayegee, Ghar Jaayegee.. ..

Mehandee Mehandee Khelee Thee Mai, Teree Hee Sahelee Thee Mai,
Too Ne Jab Kusum Ko Chunaa Thaa
Too Ne Meraa Naam Kabhee, Aakhon Se Pukaaraa Nahee
Maine Jaane Kaise Sunaa Thaa
Jaayegee, Ghar Jaayegee…

In the morning, she is waiting and Charan picks up a toy and asks her

Ma mein ye khilona le lun”.
Kusum,” Le lo beta”.

First time she addresses Charan as Beta and she blushes after realising it.

Charan sees vermillion and asks what is that thing?.

Kusum,”Ye sindur hai, jab tumhare baba meri maang mein ise aise lagaynge tab mein unke saath jaungee”
Charan” Agar baba nahin lagayenge to tum nahin jaogee”.
Kusum,“ Nahin
Charan,“ Mein laga deta hun“.
Kusum,“ badmash mere sindur lagayega. Apnee biwi ko lagana“.

Destiny has different notions and Brindaban’s servant comes alone to take Charan. Kusum heart is broken. Her hopes are destroyed.

Charan, unaware to her devastated state, goes back.

Kunj comes back and asks Kusum,” Brindavan aya tha kya, abhee uskee gaarhi dekhi jaatee huyee”.
Kusum,” Haan mujhe lene aye the”.
She cries,” Na barat, na saaj sajja. Kuch bhe to main nahin manga tha. Par phir bhee…. Bhej diya ek naukar….”.
Kunj,” Mein kya karun… par tu bhee to nahin mantee…todti bhee to nahin is rishte ko jo pata nahin hai bhee ya nahin. Isse to achcha that u vidhawa ho jatee
He breaks her bangles.

Kusum cries and sees with astonishment to her angry brother.

Brindavan’s servant comes back as Charan had forgotten her socks here.
Kunj gives pieces of broken bangles to servant and asks him to say to Brindavan and his mother that there is no relationship between two families and Brindaban is dead for us.

Brindavan was stuck at his village because Plague was spread there. And he had written a letter to Kusum but his manager could not go there.

He knows that the situation has become very bad now. He listens when his servant is telling to Durga Khote whatever Kunj had said. Durga Khote is furious and she declares that she is going to the city to fix Brindavan’s marriage with another girl and Kusum will not come in this house.

Rich lady of Kusum’s village asks her how she would spend this long life if Brindavan does not accept her and marries somebodyelse this time also.

She replies,”Kyon Vidhwayen nahin rehtee
But she realises what she has said and prays for the long age of Brindavan.

Brindavan is given a nice song to sing after this occasion.

Song – O manjhi re

O Maazee Re, O Maazee Re
Apanaa Kinaaraa, Nadiyaan Kee Dhaaraa Hai

Saahilon Pe Bahanewaale Kabhee Sunaa To Hogaa Kahee
Kaagajon Kee Kashteeyon Kaa Kahee Kinaaraa Hotaa Nahee
O Maazee Re, Maazee Re
Koee Kinaaraa, Jo Kinaare Se Mile Wo Apanaa Kinaaraa Hai

Paaneeyon Mein Bah Rahe Hai, Kaee Kinaare Toote Huye
Raasaton Mein Mil Gaye Hain Sabhee Sahaaree Chhoote Huye
Koee Sahaaraa Mazadhaare Mein Mile Jo Apanaa Sahaaraa Hai

What an imagination Gulzar Saab has incorporated in this song! Many people see the clusters of soil falling in to the river but to use this simile in to a song is an amazing work.

Brindavan’s mother wants to take Charan with her to the city but he does not live away from Brindavan so he stays back with him only.

Kusum’s friend Manno has been married to the compounder of Brindavan. But her husband dies in the epidemic plague. Brindavan’s village is suffering badly from Plague and his manager tries to convince him to leave Charan at Kusum’s home as that village is untouched from the disease.

Brindavan does not agree to this plan but manager takes Charan with him and drops him at Kusum’s home and leaves for city.
In the evening Brindavan does not find Charan at home and goes to Kusum’s village and finds him there. He informs Kusum that Manno’s husband has been died. Kusum forces him to leave Charan there as she does not want to send Charan in plague affected village and she even forces Brindavan to come back to her home in every evening to stay there.

Brindavan tells him why he could not come that day? She says that she knows it now.
He asks her why she did not contact him after that episode.
She says that she got to know about his mothers visit to city and her plans and in his home its his mother’s wish that rules.

Sick Kunj is also cured by Brindavan and Charan has become too close to Kusum.

Rich old lady asks Kusum that when she knows that Brindavan’s mother has gone to fix his marriage in city then why she is allowing Brindavan and his son to stay at her home.
Kusum says that this is her last chance to get some happiness in life and perhaps after this she will never get any chance and all hopes will be lost so why she should not avail this opportunity.

One evening Brindavan declares that in the morning he would go back to his village as his mother is coming back.

Kusum comes back on earth and she asks if Charan would also go with him.

Brindavan says,” Yes”.
Kusum says slowly,” Mein Charan ko taiyar kar dungi subah”.

This is the hardest night for Kusum. She has spent almost whole her life in the waiting for Brindavan and tomorrow he is going away from her life forever.

Every song of Khushboo is a gem but this song Do Nainon mein ansoo bhare hain beats everyone as far as synchronization with the situation is concerned. Lyrics are representing the exact emotions of the Kusum

Do Naino Mein Aansoo Bhare Hain, Nindeeyaa Kaise Samaaye

Doobee Doobee Aakhon Mein, Sapanon Ke Saaye
Raatabhar Apane Hain, Din Mein Paraaye
Kaise Nainon Mein Nindeeyaa Samaaye

Joothhe Tere Waadon Pe Baras Bitaaye
Jindagee To Kaatee, Ye Raat Kat Jaaye
Kaise Nainon Mein Nindeeyaa Samaaye

When eyes are filled with tears then how sleep can enter in to them? When heart is so sad then how one can desire for sleep?

This song is essence of the whole film.

The picturization of this song is equivalent to the whole of the film in every manner.
Song is sung and then there are silent moments and both Kusum and Brindavan are shown passing through the emotions.

Hema Malini has done wonder in this song.

The scene where she finds the shadow of Brindavan at the door and she thinks perhaps he would come inside to talk to her and she becomes alert and her body postures change but shadow goes away and she is left with despondencies again. Now there is no hope for her. Darkness of night always make dense the negative feelings and sometimes its so dense that flourishing rays of early morning sun also dont get success in dispelling that negative effect from the mind and whole existence of a person.

Joothe tere waadon par baras bitaye
Jindagee To Kaatee, Ye Raat Kat Jaaye

[ I spent all these years believing your false promises,
Whole Life I have spent in your waiting,
I pray somehow this night also passes
]

This is ultimate point of sadness of Kusum and it touches audiences deeply.

Perhaps for Brindavan’s this kind of situation, Gulzar saab, many years later, wrote another poem.

[ Raat bhar sard hawa chaltee rahee
…..
Raat bhar bujhte huye rishte ko taapa humne
]

Neither Kusum nor Brindavan has slept in the night.

In the morning, while departing. Brindavan says to Kusum, who is looking extremely sad,
Kusum jee chahta hai ek baar phir tumse saath chalne ke liye kahun. Par janta hun tum mana kar dogi

Kusum lifts her face and her eyes are filled with tears.
He takes a pause and says,”Pata nahin kya kami hai mujhme jo tum har baar mujhe thukra deti ho. tum bata saktee ho, wo kya kami hai mujhme”.

Kusum says,” Haan Adhikar ki kami hai aapme. Jis adhikar se mein Charan ko rok leti hun, apko rok leti hun. Us adhikar se aap kyon nahin le jate mujhe. Kyon nahin adhikar dikhakar mera ahankar choor choor kar dete. Yadi aap adhikar dikhate to mein bhala kaun hoon jo mana kar patee”.

Kusum is crying. Brindavan is standing with moist eyes and Charan saves the situation and he comes and says,
Baba pehle ye sindur lagao Ma ke sir mein tabhi wo hamare saath chalegi. Warna nahin chalegi”.

Brindavan decorates Kusum’s head with Vermillion and at that time Kunj comes out and sees this and says,” Aaj peeche mud kar mat dekhna behan. Ja apne pati ke saath ja. Paraya kar de is ghar ko aaj”.

Kusum bends and touches the feet of Brindavan and both go out of the house.

Kusum throws back the keys of the house and reminds the sayings she had recited at the occasion when Manno was going with her husband after her marriage.

Ye Tera ghar tha babul. Jo bhee yahan khaya peeya sab chukka kar ja rahee hun. Is ghar ka koi karj mujh par ab nahin hain. Mein is ghar ke liye aaj se parayee ho gayee“.

Khushboo is the film which starts with opening scene showing Asrani in the frame and it ends also with Asrani standing alone in his home, watching with satisfaction and happiness the beginning of the constructive phase of her younger sister whose life was ruined earlier.

Even the bulls pulling the cart in which Kusum, Charan and Brindavan are sitting, run and jump high with happiness.

Thus ends the emotional tale!

This is Hema Malini’s film.

Jeetendra should be praised for the guts because he produced films like Parichaya, Kinara and Khushboo for Gulzar Saab.

And he has acted so well in these films.

In Khsuhboo he has not got many dialogues but he is able to express the feelings and in this films his eyes express the deeper meaning and it can be said that he also depends on director’s way of handling. If director knows how to take best out of his actors then Jeetendra can look more convincing in the role given to him. Here in Khsuhboo he is given the character whose get up resembles with Gulzar Saab himself.

Master Raju had glorious childhood career in films and he acts very well here.

Asrani fits very well in his character.

For Durga Khote it was a child’s play to act in such a role and she effortlessly steals every scene wherever she appears.

Farida Jalal also got what she does good, role of a cheerful girl.

Khushboo has a mini film inside this film where Sharmila Tagore is shown. Later her story was explored more in the film Namkeen.

RK, great writing!!!Even I feel this was among Hema’s top three performances(or maybe “the” performance). You know Jeetendra did the right thing by producing the three films you mentioned.Because now when I think of watching a Jeetendra film I can only think of these three films!!!!!The music was too good. But the way you have explained the entire story is amazing…Kudos to you…I am your fan now!!

RK: yeh sab lines yaad kaise rakhte ho? This was good. I have seen Khushboo only once so it was a good reminder. Gulzar has great dialog writing skills. Simple, yet deeply ironical at times. You mentioned Sarat Chandra but not the story ‘Pandit Moshay’ on which this was based.
Hema was quite good esp considering that this film was being shot in parallel with Sholay. So Hema was playing Basanti and Kusum at about the same time!!
Lastly, that small Sharmila cameo. Wouldn’t it be more appropriate as a story which was explored in Mausam more than Namkeen?

    @Anindya,
First V shantaram in Geet Gaya Pattharon ne and Boond jo Ban gayee moti and later Gulzar in Parichay, Khushboo and Kinara helped Jeetendra to present himself as a good and sensitive actor suitable for those kinds of roles.
Without any doubt these five films can be said as representative films of Jeetendra. Then he has some good films in hard core commercial category in late 60s, 70s and early 80s.
He was dependent on a good director.

Hema Malini- Surely Khushboo, Kinara, Meera and Lal Patthar are four top performances of Hema Malini and her second level has many good films like Tere Mere Sapne, Abhinetri, Jonny Mera Naam, Ratan Deep, Sholay,Seeta Aur Geeta, Prem Nagar, Palkon ki chhanv mein, Paraya Dhan, Haath ki safai etc etc. This level has most of her 70s films and third level starts 1980 onwards when a saturation came in her career. But without any doubt she was the Queen of Hindi cinema in the 70s. If directors of her films were good they could use her properly.

    Thanks for your kind comment.

    @Subrat,
Not so difficult in case of Khushboo. I saw it again in January. A good impression was already there because of the watching it on DD in early 80s. Songs kept memories alive.
There is something special about Khushboo, Kinara and Mausam because memories of these films dont fade.
    Many factors can be there.
So good impression was there but this second watching brought out the magic of dialogues and silent moments with much better understanding.
normally lyricists will not use word “changa” in a song but Gulzar saab used it effortlessly.
I have not read this story of Sharat Chandra Chaterjee in prints.
Like if write about Mausam I will mention that its based on the story written by Samresh Basu but what is the original title of the story, I may skip because I have not read his bengali stories but few translated ones.

Elder Sharmila’s case has resemblance with Lakhi in Khushboo and same thread is used in Palkon ki chhanv mein also. But Namkeen takes ahead the whole story of Lakhi.
Only elements are distributed in to the lives of Sharmila Tagore and Shabana Azami.
like Lakhi, Shabana tries to do suicide.
Waheeda Rehman is extended version of mother of Sharmila in Khushboo.
When Kiran Vairale also goes with her father and Sharmila is left alone then it becomes Lakhi’s story.

Namkeen has similarities and yet its different because otherwise why Gulzar Saab would have made it.
Poignancy factor in the life of central female character/s is a common thing in all these films and many things look similar but overall films look different because something is small in one film and its shown in elaborated manner in other film.

Thanks RK sahab..”khushboo” is always one of my favourite film. I remember one of my techi friend barged into my room while I was watching “khushboo”. He looked at me and then on the screen and screamed all of a sudden “kya chutiyaape ki filme dekhta rehta hai ?” and he left. After the film i felt sleepy and went to sleep. When i woke up in the morning i saw that he is now watching it. He told me that he is watching it twice and told me “what a film man..what a film…i just loved it”…
this is the strength of the film once u gets into it.u goes on and on…it’s so beautiful film….the supporting cast asrani and farida jalaal has done great job and the songs…specially “o majhi re”…i think o majhi re is one of the gr8 works of gulzar…it has lines like “koi kinaara jo kinaare se mile apna kinaara hai”..it means that two “kinara’s” never meets so i too doesn’t have any defnite kinaara”..gr8 piece of writing..thanks RK saab for this

Nice article. BTW the link on the PFC homepage read Khushboo fragrance of love…etc, making me think this was about the last month’s Pahlaj Nihalani film (”Kyu Hai Mujhe Lagta..”) !!!
