Kishore Kumar, Unravelled

My tribute to the Legend who passed away on 13th Oct 1987. 21 years now and still I can feel him everywhere, in everything.

An artist unparalleled and a person yet to be unravelled fully. Trying to demystify, I present a facet of Kishore, which is discussed in many places, in the way that he likes nature, talks with trees, etc. I have a few more stories which show how sensitive a person he was :

He used to like solitude all his life. Always engrossed with his own thoughts, mostly musical in nature. In the childhood, he used to run away from his house, to avoid people and crowd , do at a quiet place at the banks of a river. He used to love the noise of the flowing waters and chirping of the birds. He used to find music in such things. At the nights he used to go on the terrace and watch the far away stars and again get thrilled by the “music” of the flowing wind and the movements of the
leaves on the trees. The nights in Khandwa were very quiet and peaceful.

Even in his Juhu Bungalow, especially in the 60’s when he was tired of his acting roles, used to sit for hours on harmonium, bringing out one original tune after the other, only for himself. I have an interview of his from Dec 1969 where he says

“Mujhe acting karne mein agar kabhi maza aaya to sirf bhaisaab (Ashok Kumar ) ke saath. Filmon se mera jee bhar gaya hai. Ab jee karta hai door door bhatakta rahun. Naye naye insaanon se milta rahoon. Ab to saare hindustaan ka chakkar lagaane ki ichha hai”

He never knew that just a year after this, he would be the most busiest singing star in the tinseltown.

The time he started his foreign stage shows in late 60’s, he once visited Mexico.

Kishore

Kishore

In one of these visits he was wearing the cap and giving a pose to the camera, as if he was the real Viva Zapata !

I am amazed by the ups and downs that this man has faced in life. In the solitude he used to read a lot. Even he subscribed to many a film journal. He was interested especially in film photography journals. Had so many ideas bubbling within, but the worldly “chakkars” made him cancel his plans, ideas. He used to say to his near and dear ones “Main soya hua sher hoon. Mujhe mat jagaao “. But once he awakened, he was unstoppable.

I think one life is not enough to find the real Kishore. Trying to Penn down a few lines for him, today :

Aasmaan mein dekhoon to ek hi sitaara hai
Tumhare dum pe hi to roshan har nazaara hai
Kya hota agar tum meri zindagi na hote
Kya hota agar is jahaan mein hum na hote !

Whenever i feel depressed at some thing, it is Kishore Da’s voice intoning “Samjhauta Gamon se Kar lo”, that makes me accept things as they are and move on.

On a long drive, no song sums up my mood better than “Raah pe rehte hain”.

When im playing with my daughters, “chanda mein jhoole meri bitiya rani, chandni re jhoom”.

Or in a romantic mood “Dil kya kare” or “chalte chalte” or “dil bar mere” or “pal pal dil ke paas”.

In a pensive, thoughtful mood it is always “zindagi ka safar, hai yeh kaisa safar”.

Whenever i need that bit of motivation to keep going “Ruk Jaana Nahin, too kahi haar ke”.

And no song better to express middle class city life than “Yeh jeevan hai” or even “Thoda hai, thode ki zaroorat”

For me Kishore Kumar is not just a singer whose songs i listened to while growing up, he has been a part of my life, his songs touched me, inspired me, made me feel romantic, moved me.

Thanks RK. shortage of time again led to a small one. Yes the pic is first time available for PFCians ( and internet junta ). I have the entire photosession somewhere. It is just superb man. Kishore loved Marlon Brando and posed like him a few times.
Looking forward to CKNG, take your time though !!

    @KCP,
Kishor Kumar, means all rounder. Its said that success is almost limited in everybody’s life.
If he had come in the era when actors used to sing themselves then he could have been super star easily because as an actor he was better than rest of the singer cum actors. When he appeared on the scene then play back singing had already been established and strongest actors like Ashok Kumar, Motilal, Balraj Sahni and Raj-Dev-Dilip had already established milestones in acting and others were compelled to match the yardsticks established by these stalwarts.
But amazing creative life was lived by Kishor Kumar. The youthfulness and hope and energy in his singing is so pure. It affects deeply a listener.

On that day, I dont know why, but I was listening only to one song, not sung by Kishore, but his son Amit. The reason could be the theme - “solutitude at night”. This bengali non film song is from the album “Porichoy-2004″, composed by Amit himself, sung in one take without today;s cut/paste and is one of my most favourite Amit Kumar songs. It takes me into deep trance and at times when I am awake at night, this is the first song which comes into my mind almost impetuously. The song antaras shake me up whenever I listen to it, in solitude.

One request to members : even though I have the gist of the song, the meaning, I want a word to word translation of the song in hindi or English. Any help would be much appreciated.

Lyrics are here ( non iTrans ) :

    Ondhokaare akaa sritir shaathe dyaakha
Kotha holo dujone phele asha jibone
    Mon je abaar haraalo
Kanna bheja chokhe bollo sriti dekhe
    Byaatharekhe shorone
    Keeje paabe jibone
    Paaro to amaay aaj bholo

Akaash je kaalo meghe dhekhe aachhe
E mone byathari megh jome aachhe
E raate shomoy jeno theme aachhe
    Keno bolo sraabone
    Phire aashe jibone
    Je byaatha amaar haaraalo

Keno she kaachhe eshe doore gyaachhe
Keno she amaar kotha bhoole gyaachhe
Na kishe amaar motoi jege aachhe
    Chole jaava sraabone
    Muchhe jaava phaagune
    Sriti je theme daandaalo

Would love to know which songs do PFCians listen in a solitude, especially at nights.

Kudos for ur brilliant article. Something which troubled me immensely is that I tried to listen to FM playing Guru on the 13th while going home from office. Not a single channel was playing his songs (this was around 6-7 PM, IST). This is unpardonable. Even in 2005, I have heard his songs being played almost 24 hrs a day in some FM channels on Oct 13.

Can somebody clarify if FM really played his songs? Debojyoti?

  11. Jahan on October 15th, 2008 1:15 am

@Ashwin: Not my favorite VB song, but I love Rozana too!

  12. ashwin on October 15th, 2008 3:18 am

  13. Jahan Bakshi on October 15th, 2008 3:23 am

That is extremely difficult to say- he is my favorite composer after ARR… will have to think for a day atleast! :)
