The media has widely reported about Ashutosh Gowariker’s What’s Your Rashee and Anurag Singh’s Dil Bole Hadippa having their world premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this time.
But it is one small film, in Konkani, that probably will become big at TIFF. We are talking about Paltadacho Munis (The Man Beyond The Bridge), directed by Laxmikant Shetgaonkar. It will have five screenings at TIFF in the Discovery section.
Shetgaonkar is the same guy who had won the National Award for Best Debut Non-feature Film at the 52nd National Film Awards and the Gold Conch at Mumbai International Film Festival in 2004 for Ek Sagar Kinare (A Seaside Story).
TMBTB is produced by the National Film Development Corporation of India and has Chittaranjan Giri, Veena Jamkar, Prashanti Talpankar and Vasant Josalkar in the cast. The music is by Ved Nair, sound by Rajendra Hegde, cinematography by Arup Mandal and editing by Sankalp Meshram.
The film is set in the dense forests at the Goa-Karnataka border is is the story of Vinayak, a lonely forest guard living with the memories of his dead wife, and his tryst with a mentally-challenged young girl.
TIFF, by the way, will also have the world premiere of noted photo-journalist Dilip Mehta’s Cooking With Stella, starring Seema Biswas, Don McKellar and Lisa Ray.

This is really encouraging. Hadippa and Rashee have just one special presentations screening. Even Dev Benegal’s Road movie is also in the special presentations section. Paltadacho Munis has 3 screenings in the discovery section. Just checked the TIFF site.
Neeraj: I stand corrected on the number of screenings. thanks for it.
three public screenings and two for press and industry. anybody who has watched A SEASIDE STORY will look forward for this film
mere hardik abhinandan to the Paltadacho Munis team. All the best.
also premiering at TIFF is Dev Benegal’s Abhay Deol starrer “Road, Movie”. Cheers to them too…
What’s Your Rashee and Dil Bole Hadippa are trash that are only being shown for their premieres to enhance the festivals engagement with the Indian and ‘South Asian’ community in Toronto, who happen to comprise the largest, or one of the largest ethnic minority groups in that city and region, and tick the multi-cultural feel-good boxes. They won’t make any impact outside that demographic, because, lets be frank, they are trivial and stupid and derivative and are an insult to the intelligence of the audience. How they got to be shown instead of Bhardwaj’s Kaminey I’ll never now, but there you go. Such is life.
But I am emboldened greatly by the selection of this movie because it means there is encouragment to innovative and original voices in Indian cinema. Also looking forward to hearing more about Road, Movie. Hope PFC can get hold of a copy of the trailer for these movies and upload them to youtube.
When can we check this movie out in indian theatres?
Are good films only for the indian diaspora abroad?
Why do f##$$n bolly film-makers think that the indian audience is dumb(TZP n some others being the exception)
