kyun art masterpiece ki talaash mein udaas hai nirash hai dil

I have written a short ode to KKC. This is not a review (meaning i will not justify myself)

KHO CHUKA CHAAND

kyun art masterpiece ki talash mein udaas hai nirash hai dil
kyun apne heroes sey khafa khafa zara zara sa naraaz hai dil

yeh audience bhi khud hi tay kare
yeh critics bhi khud hi tay kare

kyun achchi opportunity barbad kar chuka hai khama-kha hi yeh dil
kyun no smoking key zone main chala gaya bigad gaya be-imaan yeh dil

I am really scared that they are going to kill a film that i think is an extremely accomplished work of art.” – Anurag kashyap

Anything that is dead cannot be killed. You cannot be expected to be called a martyr if the cause you are fighting for is dead inherently. Martyr is Mani sir in Yuva …. Martyr is Mani Sir in Dil Se …. Tishu in Charas … Anurag in Shool, Gulaal and Paanch…. even Ramu in Daud … Martyr was sudhirji in Dharavi/Hazaron

Martyr is not Mani Sir in Guru, not Ramu in Aag/Shiva, and certainly not Sudhirji in Chameli/ Khoya Khoya.

There is a difference between a Chatrapati Shivaji/Maharana Pratap (who faught for causes) and a Mohammad Bin Tuhlaq (thanks to ChakDe for this)

I will fight till my last drop in my body for a Black Friday and Hazaron… Satya… Kannathil … Dil Se .. I will defend them vociferously. However I cannot and will not fight for KKC.

Inconsistent performances. Shiny is marginally better than what he was in Sins. A struggling URDU novelist with arrogance is always a very intresting character to play. Talented but Arrogant people make great characters .. unfortunately neither Sudhirji nor Shiny make one. Zafar is a hopelessly hopeless guy with serious diction problems. I didnt feel any authenticity to him at all. And pray, which urdu novelist in those days wore shirts trousers ? I thought Saahir always wore kurtas ….. the arrogance doesn’t show. There is no sense of relation with the character. I coudlnt care less for his happiness or his sorrow. Shiny in HKA was soooooooooooo much better.

Soha…. NO!!! definite miscast. Her sad/tragic monologues were unintentionally hilarious with audiences cheering. ISHQ aur JUNG didnt seem a film but seemed a spoof of a film. She is no waheeda to enrapture your attention. HOW WE MISSED CHITRAGADHA SINGH !!!

Who cares what happened to Soha when she went to Prem Kumar ?
When she was sleeping with Shiny no one in the audience felt liberated.
Why the hell did the marriage stop ? Because of absence of money ? What a flimsy reason !!! All of a sudden to top it all !!!
Why are there so many handheld jerky shots ?
Why doesnt one sequence blend into the other ?
Why does the film despite having moments, doesnt evoke anything out of me ?
Why does the entire film feel like a KLPD of sorts with all opportunities lost ?
Why is it a music video without any consistent story telling ?

Why does Soha take to drinking ?
Who cares ?
Who are Sonya Jehan and Prem Kumar playing here ?
Who cares ?

Does soha feel sad when she sees Shiny with Sonya jehan ?
Is Shiny feeling remorseful then ?
Is everything being translated on screen ?

Is that subtle because Sudhirji didn’t want to spoon feed or because Sudhirji didn’t know what to do or because the screenplay was loose there or because the performances screwed up ?

Why have tackiest of tacky 50’s and 60’s film sequences ?
Why are the best dialogues given to neither the protaginist/female lead but with a garralous punju Khosa ?
Why make a film for the audience if you have to be praised by fellow film makers ?

Why ? Why ? why ?
Why have the entire ‘Aaja- Nachley’ ish ending with Soha doing a Meena kumari ?

DO I REALLY BOTHER IF SHE IS DRINKING TO SORROW AND GLORY ? NO I DO NOT.
Couldn’t the editing have been better ?
Is the props and a sepia tone only needed to make a period film and not convincing performances and a rock solid script ?

A disturbing .. very disturbing trend in the audiences I noticed in the ‘different-expecting-WOW-ART’ movies like No smoking, KKC, Gandhi My Father is that the audiences do not care beyond a point. There is unitentional comic relief provided at the most inappropriate of all places in the film. 7 out of 10 people heaved a BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG sigh of relief when the movies ended.

Why do I talk about all this when I’m an absolute nobody and others can get back with “what have you done? ”

Why do I feel guilty to voice my opinion against senior filmakers’ films (I’m still your fan, I humbly submit) ?

Yes the film has moments (the one in which shiny is bessotted with Sonya jehaan and the stone pelting scene come first to mind). But few moments do not a movie make.

If there is one scene which truly epitomises the film is the one between ‘Johnny Walker’ and ‘Guru Dutt’. Johnny suggests him to make a movie with Nikhat (Soha). At which Guru Dutt suggests that perhaps if Waheeda wasn’t there he wouldve made the film with nikhat.

IS THIS TRUE SIR ?
Could you not find better actors for such a film sir ?
Were you also forced to ignore many Nikhats for Waheedas ?
Does giving tribute to Guru Dutt mean incorporating inconsistencies in your script just like there are so many inconsistencies in Kaagaz Ke Phool ?

And does criticising a film like OMKARA and making a film like KKC make you a better filmaker?

Your post on KKC makes for a much more intresting read than watching your film sir.

The music is pretty good and soothing sir..but it doesnt make any dime of a difference to the film sir. Majaaz, Kishore Kumar – Madhu bala, Meena kumari, Saahir, Guru Dutt, OP Nayyar, Kamal Amrohi .. those are wonderful names in your film sir ….

THATS ALL SIR …. THEY ARE JUST NAMES … NO EMOTIONAL CONNECTION SIR. WE DONT WATCH A DRAMA .. WE WATCH AN ENCYCLOPEDIA/TELEPHONE DIRECTORY WITH NAMES POPPING IN AND POPPING OUT.

AND pls forgive my arrogance and ignorance sir. I will try and make a film one day. Untill then pls forgive me sir.

Kartik Saar!! Kya bola yaar! Now I am more curious to see this movie! haha!

By the way, Jackie Shroff is acting in a film set in the 1940’s-50’s hindi film industry, shot totally in B&W and directed by Rohit Kaushik! OSO, KKC, and now this…seems to be a deluge of such filsm..! What’s with this new trend of “Back to the Past”!!?

Well, this is quite a harsh review and I dont yet know if it is warranted, as i haven’t seen the film.

Nonetheless, sometimes I guess when u expect a film or a filmmaker to take the industry by storm and the film falls way short then ur hurt and hurt deeply.

And I see more hurt in Kartik’s voice than anger or arrogance. While his views as an audience is totally justified, I know him enough to know, his respect for filmmakers such as sudhirji is undisputed.

Tough luck Kartik, and will wait for your film too. All the best

Santosh – yeah maan .. there is more hurt than arrogance :-) How I wish Sudhirji had made a better film. It’s not that KKC is atrocious. But i believe .. “to those whom a lot is given, a lot is expected”…. it was almost as if i had waited all year to watch this film but what i got in return was phussi !!! the cracker was a phussi !!!

KK likes to ask his questions in “BOLD” but then the one that I could come close to agreeing the most was not marked in BOLD

“Why make a film for the audience if you have to be praised by fellow film makers?”

Zindagi sawalon ke jawab dhoondne chali….main bhi chala…

tab tak KK tum appne sawal jaari rakhna…bold mark karna mat bhoolna.

My personal opinion as I have said elsewhere too…was rooting for it till the last 20 mins.

Sonia Jahaan I thought was awesome…far more life from the wood that you have mentioned….

And why is it a must that the best lines of the film should go to the leading man?

KK – “Does soha feel sad when she sees Shiny with Sonya jehan ?” aaing??? yeh kya sawal tha? yeh to bada toing hai?

“Why are there so many handheld jerky shots ?”
I dare not ask such questions when I don’t know the C of chutiya to the C of Cinematography….but then you might know better….

My Question – why are there so many question marks when you could have ended the entire post with a single question mark….

OK now KK you have a point….I agree to this too

“And does criticising a film like OMKARA and making a film like KKC make you a better filmaker?”

    Opinion A – criticizing OMkara – Sm’s opinion
KKC – His film which you can have an opinion on. Completely fair

  16. What a seriously stupid post KK..
Just because audience the one you saw it with didn’t care for the film doesn’t mean it should not be made.. btw audience didn’t care about either dil se or shool or BF..
In sholay the best dialogues were with gabbar singh and he wasn’t the protaganist.
this post reeks of ignorance and you all over again remind me of Oscar wilde
“there is no self confidence like ignorance”
applies in this case to you, for what you do not know doesn’t exist for you. this is a post of a fanatic not a disappointed fan..
It is completely OK to not like or hate the film but the questions you ask are seriously stupid..

I am not saying the movie didnt have its negatives… of crse it had… like for me, who watched ED WOOD next day after watching KKC, I felt if only it started from a black and white movie, moving to color rich 60 to eastmans 70.. there was no reason for sudhirji to litter the scenes with 2 months later stuff… also I feel the character of Zafar was mostly uni dimenionsal… the anger and frustration of a creative geniuos with a faulty childhood… there was an attempt to show his other ‘human’ side.. when they pelt stones at the producer’s house… but i feel somethng more could have been done… well.. will keep posting more on this…

Friends..such movies generally have to be first seen, savoured and then commented upon.
I had booked for the morning show of this Sunday. Yes, I did read a few reviews but did not form any opinion until the closing credits went by. I savoured a few things, enjoyed a lot of other things and Vinay Pathak and Sushmita’s performances are still on my mind.
My wifee also did like it(may I say here that she is a complete conformist..loves her K Jo tears!!) and it was nice.
This movie does put a few thoughts, about an era, about those people, about glamour, about the toil in showbiz..it does..Yes!
Isn’t that an achievement in itself??

I think this review is a bit hard , in a way it shows the personal disappointment regarding the kind of classic movie most people were expecting from KKC. It seems that most of us had sky high expectations and we all went to see the movie with certain kind of mindset and dint allowed to slip a single flaw in the movie.
I dont think even Guru Dutt or Raj Kapur wud have been able to make a full proof movie. Every movie has some flaws becoz it is made by people.Sudhir ji is also one of us , he can also go wrong sometimes. If he was so good in HKA,may be next time he can make something far better then HKA or even better then Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahi(my personal fav.)
I hope Mr. KK your movie will be good enough , but anyone can make out 100s of mistakes in u r movie also, Becoz its always the easiest thing to do to pinpoint someone else mistakes.
and last thing i sincerely feel Soha tried her best in this movie, even Chitrangda(she is damn good actress) wudnt have able to perform upto that mark that u wud say that she looks like meena kumari in one scene and nargis in another and waheeda rehmaan in next. No actress can be all of them in one movie.
