Laaga Chunari Mein Daag - the ‘inspirations’!
Laaga Chunari Mein Daag (dir Pradeep Sarkar) is an ‘inspirational’ work. That is what is being said in some sections of the media and the Net.
Here are 4 films which have similar story backgrounds. Decide for yourself.
1. Doghi (Sisters) Marathi (1995)
Dir: Sumitra Bhave & Sunil Sukhtankar; Cast: Renuka Daftardar, Sonali Kulkarni, Uttara Baokar, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Suryakant Mandre.
Synopsis: The story of two sisters, Gauri and Krishna, two ordinary middle-class girl in a village who, as their fate would have it, fall into different circumstances in life. After her husband’s fatal accident, Gauri comes to her poor brother in Bombay only to end up as a sex worker. Her sister, Krishna tries to help her in vain. A social drama with human pathos lifted by superb performances from the main cast.
It went to a lot of international film festivals and won some awards too, including Torino (Italy) where it won the Grand Jury Prize, Indian Panorama in IFFI (1996), the National Award for the Best Film on Social Issues (1996), Mannheim International Film Festival (Germany), Belgrade Film Festival (1997), London Film Festival (1996), Cairo International Film Festival (1996).
This is what Sarkar said in an interview:
Q: There’s talk that Laaga Chunari…has been inspired from the Sumitra Bhave-Sukthankar directed Marathi film, Doghi?
A: Yes, Adi (Aditya Chopra) did hear about this film a long time back and the idea had stayed with him. He developed the story and when I heard it, I almost cried. And Rekha Nigam, who previously did the screenplay for Parineeta did a superb job with it.
2. Nirontor (Forever Flows); Dir: Abu Sayeed; Bangladesh (2006)
Synopsis: A lower-middle class family in Bangladesh’s capital city of Dhaka is going through hard times. Their father has gone blind and can no longer work, and most of the family’s money has been wasted on their unemployed son Hiru, who refuses to work. All the family s problems fall on the shoulder of their beautiful daughter Tithi, who works as a prostitute to help the family. The film is a fairly non-judgmental look at the lives of Tithi, her family and the people she comes in contact with through her job.
This Bengali language film got a special jury award at IFFI (Goa) in 2006 and was Bangladesh’s official entry for the Foreign Language Oscar.
3. Ek Din Pratidin (A Day Like Any Other); Dir Mrinal Sen (1979)
Synopsis: The bread-winning daughter in a middle-class family fails to return from work one evening. The night begins with worries at home, followed by midnight searches and finally a deepening crisis arising out of economic and moral constraints prevalent in the society. Yet the film speaks of hope, of strength hidden behind despair.
The storyline is exactly similar to LCMD, but has a premise that rides on the same issue.
4. AAINA; dir: K Balachander, Cast: Rajesh Khanna, Mumtaz, Jagdeep, Madan Puri; 1974
Synopsis: Ram Sastri is an honest and upright purohit earning his livelihood by performing religious ceremonies. He would starve rather that accept charity in any form. He has a big family-wife and eight children. To add to his woes, his sister, accompanied by her daughter, comes to stay with him.
The purohit’s grown-up daughter, Shalini, once accepts a sari from her childhood friend Ashok. She accepts the gift because the sari she has is in tatters. But Ram Sastri would have none of it and sees to it that the sari is given away to a beggar woman. Once the children enact a drama with Shalini in the role of a boon-granting goddess. Everyone expresses his or her wish. Her brother Gautam wants to be a doctor. Purna wants to be a musician while Devi desires to be happily married. One brother wants to be an engineer, another a major in the army. And, large-hearted Shalini promises to fulfil their wishes. Despite objections, she takes up a job locally to meet the needs of the family.
When it is time for Gautam to seek admission to the medical college, Shalini goes to the city to solicit recommendation. She stays with a danseuse friend whose inaugural dance performance is fixed for the following day. At the house of an M.L.A. from whom she expects to obtain a recommendation, Shalini meets a woman who promises her to take to a bigwig who would arrange for the admission of her brother to the medical college. The next day, Shalini goes to attend the dance performance but there she meets the woman of the previous day who drags her forthwith to the bigwig who molests her.
Shalini returns home to be told that Gautam had already been allotted a seat in the medical college. Now he needs money to join the college and again Shalini is called upon to do the needful. Meanwhile, Shalini is transferred to Delhi and she decides to go. There, She asks the boss for an advance so that she could remit the money to her brother for his college fees. He offers to pay but at price. She weighs the pros and cons and finally, in the interests of the family, agrees to succumb to the boss’s carnal desire. From then on, she earns plenty of money as prostitute and Ram Sastri’s family prospers.
Devi’s marriage is fixed and Shalini comes home to attend the wedding. To her horror she discovers that the bridgroom had once been her ‘customer’, Provoked by Shalini’s song, he disappears on the bridal night, but she seeks him out and the two, after an argument, agree to forget the episode and returns to his bride.
A chance remark of Shalini… “I have become immune to the presence of men”…raises suspicion in the minds of her parents. “Ashok corroborates saying that she had been living as a prostitute. Ram Sastri is furious. He turns her out, says is dead and performs that last rites. Even Gautam, whose marriage with the Tahsildar’s daughter she had arranged, scoffs at her and drags her out of the house.

Isn’t it surprising that a so-called trashy movie is occupying so much of cyberspace?
The “so-called” above is not because I differ from the opinion but because I haven’t seen the movie yet (and I don’t even see myself watching it) and I refrain from forming an opinion.
Thanks for such an informative post.
Can someone please tell me how much Mr.Subhash K Jha take form YRF for writing such a wonderful review?? (Probably the only one praising it to the skies) :-)

JG
Even considering Mr Jha’s pet poodle tendencies, this line should take the bakery
“Laaga Chunari Mein Daag is easily one of the most vivid portrayals of feminine angst and redemption in recent times.”
But are u surprised JG, after all Mr.Jha’s recommendations include classics like Yaadein, Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, and almost every 3rd movie of AB?
Do u honestly expect pet poodles to be paid? They are the kind who will be satisfied with mere crumbs.
JG
YRF, The Bachans dont need to pay anything to Mr.Jha, he will grovel in front of them free of cost.
And he is proud of the fact that he posseses no backbone. Jab usko koi fikr nahin, ki uska reed ki haddi hai ya nahin, tum kai ku fikr karte hain.
also Vivah and all SLB films…
gem of a post
laaga is one of the finest portrayals supported by the best-rani,konkona and abhishek.sorry ratnakar, jha is right ,just chill dudes on pfc
AND ANURAG KASHYAP AND TYPES BANGLADESH NAHI JEETAGA. DON’T SMOKE.
Biswarup,
Typing in caps is equivalent to shouting. So before u ask others to chill, maybe its better you learn how to chill.
Like fashion, or even like life, a lot of cinema is recycled.Lets watch LCMD without carrying the burden of cinematic history into the theatre. Some filmmakers excel in a specific genre, maybe Yashraj realised this when they decided to work with Pradip sarkar.
Biswarup is mole on this post. I very well know why he swears his allegience to the movie and the cast. It shows.:p:p
The opening credits of ‘Laaga Chunari’ actually mentions that the film is based on Sumitra Bhave’s ‘Doghi’. This is unprecedented for Hindi cinema. Irrespective of the quality of the movie, let’s congratulate Pradeep Sarkar & Yashraj movies for mentioning the source of their inspiration.=d>=d>
whats the problem with u people…
if somebody is making a movie based on another and mentioning the name of the movie in the credits then what’s the problem yaar…
Dont we have remakes …
LCMD is much much better then RGV ki AAG or any other such insipid remake…
Chill guys…
Ratnakar, absolutely right. Jha is just another pet wagging his tail when the master throws him a bone…and he’s not the only one. This world would not function without such people. In fact when a large chunk of the population anywhere in the world stops wagging it’s tail, we call it a REVOLUTION!
Maybe that’s what this sick fuckin world needs anyway….
A Subhash K Jha special ..
“In terms of creating visuals that match the inner devils of these distended devis, Pradeep Sarkar ranks next only to Sanjay Leela Bhansali”
Now. Now. Does Jha have to bring in Bhansali in every writeup of his ?

somebody should sue them for using that name for the movie!
folks, chill out. I have not seen this film and I never will but I hear from lot of people who have seen it that they have liked it. If you are ultra senti sensitive kind, you may like this movie. So no point getting personal at Jha and others who liked it.
Chill guys! if you are konkana sen fan then watch it out for her marvalous performance.. forget movie.
@Jwalant,
The one thing I’ve noticed about some of the “PFC” posters is their lack of respect towards anyone that likes any type of non-Indie Indian Cinema. If I mention that I like a Karan Johar movie or the title song picturisation from Heyy Babyy then I’m immediately attacked for my lack of taste, but because of my love for Indian cinema it brought me to this website where I was open to watching a movie like “Black Friday”. I learned about “Black Friday” from reading the blogs on “PFC” and I didn’t say I hated it without giving it a chance and now I’m glad I did.
I haven’t seen “Laaga Chunari Mein Daag ” yet, but I’m not going to get angry about it being made without giving it a chance first. I never understand why there can’t be room for all types of Cinema on a website called “Passion For Cinema”.
Konkona is brilliant and the highlight of the movie. She belongs to the Kajol-style of acting - spontananeous rather than studied. An actress to watch out for.
I have seen the movie Doghi. I can only say while the movie Doghi is a gem, Laaga chunri mei daag is a complete waste of time and money.
utpalda, how about meghe dhaka tara by ritwik ghatak?
