Life is a fairy tale
Saurabh Shukla | Exclusive, Gappu | October 14, 2009 at 5:20 am
Well… As far as I remember, I was always fat… ‘Healthy’, as my parents called it… Then I lost hair at the age of 19… Some told me I’m maturing… Others said it is a sign of becoming rich and prosperous… I was pretty average in studies… “Don’t worry you have some other gift… Just find it” my father said and got busy with his daily Riyaz of music…So I tried Painting, Singing, Cricket, Table Tennis, Writing… And theatre…
What I must have missed out during my formal education got compensated in theatre… Reading, Thinking, Discussion, Analysis, Smoking, Drinking, ‘One sided affairs’ and Friends… I guess Theatre gave me much more than I could have ever asked for.
I did things which pretty much most would have done in different ways… I took charge of my life… Decided not to do things which I don’t like… Follow my heart… Well I guess at least I tried all this…
Any way… During my days in NSD, I got short listed for Bernardo Bertolucci’s Little Buddha… Then another offer to work in England for 6 months… And to top it all… a love affair… Nothing materialized at the end of it…
But sad endings are no endings… Picture Abhi Baki hai Dost (The movie hasn’t finished yet, my friend), as Sharukh (Khan) said… So Bandit Queen happened. Later Shekhar (Kapur) called me to Mumbai to act in a detective serial called Tehqeeqat…
Another turn, another city, another set of friends… Day one, I fell in love with the phenomena called Mumbai… The city, which offers a lot of free tit-bits with one bottle of beer!
A lot happened in the first 5 years, which passed in a time span of a moment. And suddenly I realized I was part of the film Satya. Apart from writing, acting, finding friends in the film, I found my soul mate – Barnali.
The initial days of success of Satya were quiet strange. Once Barnali pointed out that I had stopped smiling…
“I have a long way to go and the journey is tough… where is the time to enjoy” I said.
“If you can’t enjoy how far you have reached… You’ll never enjoy the rest of the journey” She replied… It made a lot of sense…
I turned back to see from where I started and where I have reached… And I had a fairy tale on my side… A tale of successes and failures… smiles and tears… highs and lows… gaining some and losing some… But the best part is that the tale hasn’t reached the end yet… Picture Abhi Bhi Baaki Hai Dost… The Sharukh in me keeps telling me.
As the tale continues… right now I am planning to go to New York, where my film Raat Gayi Baat Gayi will be screened in South Asian International Film Festival.
I love burgers and Ice-cream soda… I am going to have a lot of them there… They are the best part of fairy tales!

Bhaiya shukriya apke andaz ka… Par Buddha kyun bana dia… ‘abhi to main javan hoon’ Cheers
Hello saurabh…cool writing style! Wish u had written a longer piece, wanted more.
Wonder if u remember meeting at the satya shooting during the movie hall scene. I remember u were distinctly annoyed..if I am right..because of some creative issues..ha..bhai saurabh..there’s nothing like a free vada pao in this town..and also no one who thinks he doesn’t know life, cinema, sex, violence, food, weather, clothes, better than he does. It’s great u’ve soldiered on..and wish you’d write a book titled Barah or is it Terah Saal Baad? Duas, have a great trip to NY.
Not wada pav, he was mentioning chakna, which comes with the booze. No bar serves vada pav with booze
Hey Khalid… So nice to hear from you… Of course I remember the first meeting at Mittibhai auditorium
Have been an admirer of your writing… Can’t explain how good it feels when u read and like… Hope you’ll like my film also (actually I’m pretty sure:) ) Hope to meet you soon… I’ll keep writing for sure.
For some reason, my reply to you goes to Vinay Joshi… tried it two three times
Welcome Sir Ji..Been watching you from so many days.

was watching khoya khoya chand recently. mast performance as ever…
welcome to PFC. looking for more.
Khoya Khoya chand has special place in my heart
Welcome Saurabh Ji,
It has to be genuinely a “Fairy Tale”,
otherwise if at the age of 19 multilane zig zag highways
start developing on the top most field of human body
then in 98% cases it becomes a “Hairy Tale”.
It is admirable that apart from your writing etc, you have earned a good place through your acting and many attractive characters have come your way in last 14-15 years and you have shown that actor living inside you has got a vast range and he is not limited to comedy only.
Have been loving your performances. Hope you continue acting also inspite of becoming a director so that we get many more great performances from you in the coming years.
Welcome again!
Thank you so much
Nice post, wish you had written more.
I will try and write a bigger post next time. Thank you so much
Life is a blend of happy ending and sad ending. When you’re lying on your death bed it’s sad for your closed ones and happy for yourself,if you have done some good work in your entire life.A happy moment might be melancholy for others.
Well… I’ll mull over it. Thanx so much
Welcome on PFC Shukla Saab!

Am fat and am balding too. Somehow i felt these were the reasons i cud never patao any girl. I guess i wuz wrong.
Please connect up with RGV pronto. That guy needs good scripts immediately, otherwise he would keep badgering us with his inane stories and even more inane reasons for the films flopping.

Let me assure you that you’ll find fan(atic)s here who’d grill you about Rajat Kapoor, Om Puri, Mirchi-Pepper, Mr.Mehman, Tehqeeqaat, and what not! Welcome again, and hope you’d enjoy the stay as much as we enjoy your presence.
Hello Saurabhji
Did you direct the movie called Mudda?
I had seen the movie ages back and I felt it was a lovely movie
Can you please post your experiences about that movie
Surely Mudda experience is worth sharing… wait for it
Saurabh bhai, great to read about your experiences and also the way you approach life. It seems light hearted and yet passionate at the same time. Keep sharing. Look forward to read more.
Thanks
Ashutosh
Now, telling you that I admire work would be Cliche (Sun Sun ke Pak gaye hoge).
Requesting you to write more would be redundant (Tum ne hi likha hai ki aur likhoge).
Yahi dua hai ki mujhe Phokat(Muft,Free) me insights milte rahe.
yw hui na baat ! kallu mama aya to baat ban gayi ! bhikku bhaai kahan hain mama?
saw the poster of Raat gayi baat gayi….It rocks…
I got so excited seeing you, Vinay and rajat again…
You guys are one of the BEST things that happenned to the industry
in the recent years…
May your tribe prosper !!!
Hi Saurabhji,
You indeed have come a long way. Am sure you will reach many more destinations.
Raat gayi, lekin baat baaki hai mere dost.
just got back from daily work. was tired….. and i opened pfc and what i’ve seen is so gud that can’t express man…. aur ek aa gaya aur maza aayega. welcome! saurabh
Thnx a ton ahhhhhhh I m so happy
Saurabh, It’s been over a decade and I still haven’t got over Satya. It changed the very grammer of bollywood gangster movies. After Satya, even Parinda started looking filmi !! I saw it in Plaza when Mumbai was in the grip of Satya-fever ! There’s a scene where Satya’s buddies, from a distance, see him meeting Urmila. One of them says “Item Bhaari Hai”. I remember the approving roar that went up in the hall! I had never heard such language being spoken in films ever! Satya’s place in bollywood history is unshakeable.
I still remember two of your releases on a very same day ( or probably a week apart, who cares !!)with varied characters, played superbly by you. One was Satya and other one was Kareeb.
Hi Saurabh
Can see u have a passion for the arts sir. I love ur stories nd ur take on life (refreshing indeed) nd the piece above gives an insight into Saurabh, the person nd lends a human touch. I like it….but…
“please sir, may we have some more”….lol….aka…Oliver Twist!
I especially like the part abt….”where’s the time to enjoy”!! I recall u telling me that story on one of our many scenic drives in the fairest city…..nd it stuck!
Gud Luck nd Best Wishes with your new movie…..I hope its a success!!!
Cheers
Ashley
PS!!! When they releasing Seasons Greetings??? Any idea???
We r yet to complete SG
picture abhi baki hai kallu mama….aur bhi comments aaenge ;-)
Warm welcome to the forum, hoping to read more of your thoughts. Keep writing.
very simple and heart-warming, your writing!
thanks for coming up here!
Oh My!!! Can’t express how cheerful I am reading your post Sir. I was 19 when I watched Satya, ‘ON MUTE’ because my mother was helping my younger brother with studies in the next room. I could not hear a word when ‘you were shocked at Satya asking your permission to execute Com. Amod Shukla’. But I knew it was something terrifying. Media has overshadowed your writing credits for Satya and I realise how your writing contribution tinge is missed in every other Anurag Kashyap movie. Not that if I intend to see joint venture again, but I can understand your contriution to Satya screenplay. I am looking forward to catch Raat Gayi Baat gayi. Good Luck. Hope to read some more.
Oh…wow!!! grand welcome hain ji…ek dum jhakass…
Looking forward to read your experiences…
Hope you like it here…
Saurabh Shukla replying to (almost) every comment = adorable
Kallu Mama, Welcome to PFC. This is my first post. I love your performance in Bandit Queen, Satya and that Telugu movie (Balu).

it seems like a fairy tale well lived n definitely well illustrated for the reader. its really nice to have you writing here i guess the spectrum has a new shade with your arrival here. looking forward to more from your fairy tale..hope your film kicks some ass in new york..
Aap aaye, bahaar ayee…rochak likhtey hain, aur likhiye, padhne walon ka sankhya kabhi kam na hoga..
Aap nirdeshak baney, bahut khub hai,
shohrat kamaye, ye munaasib hai,
jadd o jahat ki kshmata rakhtey hain aap,
phal meetha hoga, yahi ummeed hai.
(very poor shayari, but I wanted to come up with something ‘hatke’)
