Lollyta Sans Sex

Bachchan says that there is nothing physical in Nishabd and if there would have been any sexual angle in the movie ,he would have not done the film.

I have no qualms in what Bachchan thinks…I mean an icon like Bachchan in a country like India has to take care of his image (especially after the flak he received post BOOM).

But if that is the case , RGV has a tough film in his hand…I mean Bachchan says Nishabd dealt with the physology of the 60 year old man who is attracted to an 18 year old girl…dont know what kind of psychology/attraction he is talking about , but the trailers show an entirely different picture.

Imagine this:

- The heroine of the movie (Jiah) is in minimal clothes (all WET and SULTRY)…giving all the seductive poses/expressions to Bachchan (or is it for the audience???).

- Notice Bachchan’s awestruck (seems to be lustfull) expressions in the trailers.

Watch out that scenes where Jiah has kept a lollypop her mouth “LOLLYTA”…now catch that scene where she has put a finger in her mouth.

Question: What are we suppose to make out of whatever’s shown to us????

Question: Was Nishabd meant to be a family film???

If yes, then RGV has just done the opposite , I mean trailers like these ,must have repelled (pissed off) the family audience from catching the movie.(Anyways I have never felt that family audience were RGV’s target audience and I think he knows this very well)

Considering the fact that there is no physical relation between the protagonists, it would be really difficult for RGV to justify whatever he show’s on screen (fully accepting the fact that he just cant show an 18 year old having sex with a 60 year old man without getting into trouble).

Whatever physological stuff Bachchan is talking about his attraction for Jiah is “easier said than done justified/shown”…I mean I as an audience of Nishabd would want the lead characters (if in love) to have a physical relation between them and it would just not make me understand, that ,why (if in love) the characters didnt had sex.

Now I have written LOVE and if I watch the movie and it comes out that it was not love but LUST than I see no reason why the lead characters didnt had sex.

Considering the fact that multiplex audience would be RGV’s target audience ,RGV has lost an opportunity to make a film more true to life …making a film on the lines of Lollita with Indian sensibilities would be like taking the flavor out of wine (dont know why the makers have to do that).

Any way RGV is walking on a thin line with Nishabd (after Naanch,Shiva you can never be sure with RGV…but the man never ceases to surprise you…like a phoenix he rises everytime)…I hope it is one of those times where RGV proves me wrong and comes up with something interesting.(Although I am not confident at that with Nishabd)

My preconceived notions about the film : It would be dark, slow paced (read boring),intense (not much masala).

RGV says this is Bachchan’s best performance till date.

Last week VVC said that Eklavya was Bachchan’s best performance till date.

Last month Ravi Chopra said the same for BABUL.

All the directors before that said the same…I dont believe them.

Your article is thoughtful. It is tough to justify this role without sexual overtone/undercurrent. I am looking forward as to how RGV has balanced the movie. lets just admire the duo for having gone ahead with the film though. Having said that, I do have few questions w.r.t the write-up.

I dont think Ravi Chopra ever said that(please provide link where you read).

In Eklavya Bachchan was at his best no doubt about it. It was a very matured and restrained performance not seen before. Unfortunately our audience fed on dhoom/krish diet cannot appreciate good cinema. Same happened with Black Friday. It was another redemption opportunity for Indian cinegoers and they again proved that they are dumb.

Amitabh was far better in Sarkar then any of his 2 year preceeding performances so I am quite hopeful that he would be something to look forward to Nishabd.

    Hi Jwalant,

I dont find anything best in any of the Bachchan’s performance in the recent past (leave aside BLACK, where he had a role to match his calibre)…all other directors are trying to sell there films by talking such things.

Bachchan in Eklavya was as good as he is in (his) each and every film…nothing special about it.

…and as per Ravi Chopra ‘BABUL’ part…ya I made that up :-w:-??…but I am sure that dumbhead must have spoken something on the same lines (if not exact).

Ravi chopra is definitely a strange case. He is actually a guy who has got it all reversed, I mean he is going all backwards.I mean he made “the burning train” in 70s which was an honest attempt and not a bad movie if you see it even now and imagine the sam eguy making Babul on widow marriage. If this isn’t irony, nothing is.

Ha… Ha… Double standards… I think was more forthright in her time on MTV with Nikhil, when asked about vaigra :)

RGV & AB just maybe trying to pull the initial crowd into the theatres, by playing it safe. That it not a blue film as Roshini mentioned in one of her comments on PFC.

I feel the burning train is a really good film man…I mean I remember as a child I loved this movie and whenever it came on TV , I used to watch it…It is one of those very good movies of hindi cinema…and no doubt it can be remade now.

Well talking about the burning train…I realise how much the standard of cinema has fallen…I mean we havent made a movie like the burning train in decades now.

  9. Ideally i would like to see LUST in the film and not LOVE. I mean we’ve kind of seen films with age difference – love relationship…. but age difference lust sounds more intresting.

I just hope the film loves upto its hype and does not end up like a Boom.

HI Shitij – Just read your post, maybe i too would have thought the same had i been seeing the as an audience. I would still say, watch the film and you will know… no director can give his audience what they want, as in you pinpointed so many things, had he had to do this, he would have rather you come and direct the film. Its his interpretation of a relationship that takes place between Jiah and Amitji. Promo’s are made to make the film interesting and thus getting the audience to the theatre… again had he put images that you have assumed, he would rather let you direct your Nishabd, and also let you cut the promos yourself and make a promo that you would like to see it yourself. I have a feeling that you will like this film.

Of course the film is based on Lolita- maybe it concentrates less on the physical aspect than other adaptations, but it is, unlike what Mr Bachchan says. The scene with Jiah sucking the lollypop, the shots of her feet and legs, the scene in which she kisses AB on the cheek in the car, Jiah getting drenched in the garden with a hosepipe- very similar scenes were present in Adrian Lyne’s 1997 version of the novel too- this cannot be a coincidence. And the film definitely shows both love and lust- just see the look in their eyes.

but unfortunately nobody is willing to get out of their own problems and move on in life…
especially at PFC, i’ve noticed that many guest authors are just plain frustrated and that completely reflects in their ‘article’…
when you write a review of a film, it’s your personal opinion and you should keep it that way…
a reviewer should not influence other minds by telling them how a film should have been according to them…
after all it’s the directors point of view of how he sees his film…if you personally dont like his film say so, but dont tell him how he should have made it…dont try to correct him…
you can certainly do so when you make your own film!
my point is that when you’ll write the review of nishabd(or for that matter any film), just write your personal opinion of the film and not the filmmaker…
but if you have anything personal againgt RGV, then get personal with him…
dont influence other minds here with your surreal assumptions and preconceived notions about the film(nishabd) and it’s song…

Saahil & Surya, I realise that you both work for RGV and your confidence in him and the way you guys keep “supporting” him is admirable.

I understand that you guys would want a break with RGV for your films but constantly ganging up against the authors here for expressing their opinion is not admirable.

To put it on record, no body can be a bigger fan of RGV than me but to express an opinion about our favorite film maker’s movies is in fact one way of showing our interest and hope for the movies the director is coming out with. What Roshni said was purely her opinion. RGV makes movies the way he feels, no one has the right to question him. The same way, any person has the right to express his/her opinions. Who the fuck are we to tell them to stop talking?

What Saahil keeps saying again and again is “Don’t discuss any movie before it’s release and PFC is here only for post mortems”..Am I right or wrong in this?

I also have a query to all of you guys here? Apart from Madhur Bhandrakar, can anyone name any assistant of Ramu who had made it big?

Arre bhai Saahil tum to sahi mein Johar or Yashraj camp mein CV bhejo.

Mein to soch raha tha ki RGV ke saath kaam karne par aadmi kuch to DARK,PHYSCO ho hee jaata hai.

Aap to kaafi prem pasand aadmi hai.

Bhai kum se kum ek light hearted story to factory se nikalo…kyonki factory mein waisi hi bahut dark films banti hai.

Yaar,I want to see something cheerful…some movie celebrating life…some movie giving hope…something very light and colorful from factory.

Its doesnt have to be a love story…but something which brings a smile.

That is where (no matter how much we curse Yashraj)they score…I mean they can beaten in there own game by finding something cool within our own (crapy)lives and not from foreign locales.

I just cannot explain, what I want to say…Torn jeans are cool (no doubt), what if KURTA PAJMAS of 70-80’s were cool one day (now thats not a great comparison but…).

Chalo thode phool aur le lo -

    Saahil, Good idea…

Infact, I really admire Yashraj…However we hate them, they entertain! Every movie goer who comes out of a hall feels he has got poora paisa vasool! I’m talking about aam junta here…Every kid in the country dances to Bunty aur Babli or Kajra re…Yashraj is here only to entertain India.

When our country is involved in fucking chaos…richer are becoming richer and poor, poorer…the only escape to these people is cinema…Paying 30 or 40 rupees, they want to escape that rut! No bloody fucker has time or intelligence to worry how sensually a fucking old man is falling in love with a bimbo! If it’s boring, it’s boring! Taking be damned!

Movies like Munnabhai, Rang De, Bunty aur Babli, etc etc movies give them hope! They want to believe that good can happen to them and life is not always dark…movies glorifying criminals in fact make people depressed and might infact provoke the young minds of the country to look at crime as profession…

When a Sarkar breaks rules and his men beat up people, it creates an impression that violence is glamorous! When a Dawood is shown having all the fun with Manisha Koirala, kids think gangsters are cool!

RGV made some brilliant movies like “Money”, “Money Money”, Kshana Kshanam”, “Rangeela” etc…The day he got involved with mafia, is a sad chapter for RGV fans.

One more thing…Everyone keeps saying what brilliant acting if an actor keeps a shitty serious expression and over the top dialogue delivery…do you guys know what the fuck acting is? Sab ke sab chutiye bolne aajate hain…I feel that Amitabh acted brilliantly in films like “Amar Akbar Anthony, Shahenshah and even Mard and those performances were any day superior to Black!

Saahil, I get pissed off whenever people gang up against someone just because they have to kiss the asses of their bosses and for no other reason! We all respect RGV…but let us talk!!

Hi MK and Mainak, I really agree with u people.

I actually (:”>:”>) like what Yashraj and other (read Johars and PFC) candy floss production houses churn out.Although not as a whole but certain parts of it are good and relaxing.

But we would have to give it to RGV and factory for atleast doing something which was never even dreamt off in Indian cinema…If the level has reached somehere close to intenational standards it is cause of creativity/vision of RGV.

…but now it seems its RGV’s LUST for money and our LOVE good cinema “which is not matching”.

    It should be:

RGV’s as well as our LOVE for good cinema.

There is no room for LUST.

    Thanks Gattu,

I had seen the film yesterday…and u know there are three four instances where AB and Jiah could have had sex.

Once when Jiah is playing with AB under the dining table…AB could have directly gone to another room to BONE her.

Then when Jiah comes and expresses her love to AB again in his room.

Chalo Khalib bhi lagta hai LOVE and LUST me believe karta hai.

    Lo yaar phoolon ki barsaat.

Hey thank Gattu, thank you very much man…you have a wider reach.

Here is my take on the film:

Nishabd is a decent movie…I mean within the parameters of Indian cinema (limits of Indian audience)…I feel Nishabd is a sincere effort.

Few scenes are handled very beautifully.

AB gives something which was missing (not seen) in his previous films.

    Jiah is different.

I would appreciate RGV for an effort like this.

    Figure out this:

    That AB’s laughing scene…AMAZING.

AB trying to look smarter by adjusting his hair style (while looking in the mirror)…AMAZING.

    Jiah’s kissing of AB…SUPERB.

Bachchan’s looong Pause at the question whether he still loves his wife or not…AMAZING.

I would also like to mention that Nishabd will not move you with its characters…its just a plain decent watch. (I mean u will not fear for Bachchan…like Oh My God what now? factor will be missing).
