London Dreams movie review : Rock Yawn!
Khalid Mohamed | Cinema Ray, Editors, Exclusive | October 29, 2009 at 12:47 pm
London Dreams (limited)
Cast: Ajay Devgn, Salman Khan, Asin, Om Puri, Kababs
Direction: Vipul Amrutlal Shah
Rating: Two stars (okay so it has a huge budget, technical varnish, A-list stars..so what?)
Whip whip hurray. To keep himself away from carnal pleasures – read Miss Asin – the wannasing, wannarock star snaps his belt off, and flagellates himself. Ouch, grimace, ouch, scowl, angry-ooh-so-angry. Moral of the scene: next time you’re violently attracted to a woman, keep a dany leather belt handy. Or better still, order yourself a sado-masochist whip, or a chabook, whatever blows your socks oof. Off. Whatever.
Uncannily those whiplashes are the most potent image that stay beneath your eyelashes. Imaginatively photographed, darkly lit, terrific backdrop, all organised by director Vipul Amrutlal Shah for London Dreams, his best technical accomplishment yet. Sorry but as a film it is a head-clangier, lengthier than your lengthiest yawn, and totally destroyed by a story-script which is about as convincing as a technicolour zebra. Honest!
In fact, Laka Shaka Waka Boom Woom (or some such) by Suneil Darshan – the first ‘inspired’ version of Amadeus – at least had a snappy music score. Here Ehsaan-Shankar-Loy strive to rock on once again only with rockaus effect. Why European concert audiences go berserk over the ding dong ditties blared here is as baffling as those blondes weeping in the front rows of the concert. Could they be doing out of sheer shock and dismay? Perhaps.
Plus there is something so past historic about Vipul bhai using the by-now-done-to-Chopra gambit of alternating between footage in the Punjab and London. Mustard fields meet Thames by the night, oh boy. This is not cinema, it’s a by-now-obsolete formula which you thought the director had wringed dry, and just about in Namaste London. Could we now get a Salaam Hong Kong or even a Namaste Nepal please?Pretty please with a chicken tikka over it? Enough is enough. STOP.
Also the juvenile script — whenever it doesn’t have stamina to pursue a plot point –just hops-skips-leapfrogs from Punjab to London, as if was just going around the corner to buy a lollipop. Hilariously, then, an orphaned kid sprints away from Uncle Om Puri to play a wooden flute (Subhash Ghai’s Hero ki yaadein) in the Queen’s City. Uncle no like music because an ancestor, into classical ragas, had developed a songster’s block at the Wembley. Hyuk nuyk. So? Odd, just forget it.
Om Puriji serves kababs at Piccadilly. Orphan becomes a 30-,40-something determined to become a huge rock star who’ll play at the Wembley. Why uncle never finds him, why the police doesn’t track the kid, what the kid survives on…are factors which don’t worry anyone except you-hoo. Grief. Anyway so runaway Arjun (Ajay Dvgan) stalwartly believes in his name, wants to be focussed, and so performs at Trafalgar square, and is instantly joined by a couple of Pakistanis who remain his lifelong sidies. He also draws Chennai Express (Asin) into his group London ke Sapnay. Asin’s made-in-Woodland dad wants her to excel in Bharata Natyam but she’d rather chiggy wiggy. Diggy?
The plot appears to have been scribbled on tattered pages. Aha, now Wannarock star’s mustard pal (Salman Khan) pops up as the ultimate cretin, sleeping around with Punjab belles, running up debts that would make you feel quite comfortable about your own, but, yo, he’s super-gifted. He can handle a raga, talk eruditely about a song’s metre, make it sound like either Jagjit Singh or Rapchik Rapinem. Man, he’s cuuuuuute. Wannabe brings him over to London. Hell’s bells, this village hick is so much superior.
Oi, is this Amadeus or Abhimaan? Or both. How you just want to run away to Hrishikesh Valley.
Boyz will be boyz, natch. Wannabe gets Mustard Field hooked on to drugs, in a matter of two or three days. Ma’am Asin looks sad, almost as if she were stoned herself. The sidies do their damage, and whoa, Om Puri saab makes a comeback to dispense some Confucian advice. Cringe cringe.
Truly, whatever is going on? This poppish band hasn’t even cut a disc and their concert is packed with a crowd that would make Madonna go walnuts with envy. By the way, the enormous crowds are so digitally enhanced that you wish Vipul bhai had stuck to the Rock On-style of intimacy. Compared to London Dreams, that one is classic Woodstock.
The editing is hopelessly repetitive. Shots of Ajay Dvgan brooding in a red room make you go purple. Sejal Shah’s cinematography is top class except when it goes for sky tints and unnecessary top shots. The dialogue is on the amateurish side. And you can’t figure out several elements, like why Asin was carrying a blue broom when you first see her.Symbolic? Can’t say.
Of the performances, Rannvijay Singh already seen in Namaste London is ‘introduced’ here. Seriously suggest that he remains on television. Asin is passable. Ajay Devgn is miscast, he’s far too senior to convince you that he’s on the eve of a music career. Salman Khan, dammit, is lovable. He goes over the top, imitates Dharmendra (not successfully always) but he does rescue London Dreams from turning into a nightmare.
With all its mad flaws and inadequacies, Shah’s enterprise still sees him going beyond the klutzy rishtas and pishtas. If you think that’s sufficient reason to buy a ticket , check out this London Whippy Whippy Shake.

Brilliant title, “Rock Yawn” :D
Bad choice of actors if the theme was “Rock Band”,
When will the ignorants of the world understand that IT is NOT A ROCK BAND. The world ‘Rock’ is not utterred even once in the movie. It is only ‘Sangeet’ that Ajay Devgn keeps talking about. And it is clearly a ‘POP Band’ like ‘Stereo Nation’, ‘Apache Indian’ or ‘Strings’ or even may be like Daler Mehandi. Why are people unnecessarily slotting this film as a rock movie? And BTW rock or pop is not the point. The point is tussle between passion and tussle, friendship and success.
I will see my self!! I’m sure I will love it!!!
wat a patheic review.
u have hardly highlighted any amjor aspects of the movie.
no matter wat u say dis film iz gonna rock 100%.
at least it will be a million times better dan Blue.

MY GOD! WHO IS THIS PEDESTRIAN OF PFC? DUDE, YOU ARE IN A WRONG FORUM. DEAR, HAVE YOU WATHCED THE FILM OR JUST SHOOTING FROM YOUR FILTHY MOUTH? THIS IS NOT A ROCK MOVIE AND ROCK OR POP IS SIMPLY NOT IMPORTANT. IT IS AN ENTERTAINING FILM AND DEFINITE ONE TIME WATCH.
The review sure should be better than the movie. Keep them coming Khalid Saab…..
Please dont encourage him….
Can someone please list Hindi movies Khalid saab has actually liked? I’ve read his reviews here only and somehow get the feeling that he relishes bashing them up more than watching them…..
Khaleed saab actually liked “Kabhi Khushi Kabhi gam”…He gave 5 stars for that!!!…I think that’s the only hindi film he liked most!!..
its very safe to assume that like all others, he likes hrishikesh mukherjee. that’s probably the safest thing a journalist can say, apart from, of course, guru dutt.
I am totally agreed with you, if the man who has given this sort of riview it feels he has some personal problem with london dreams.
Friends, believe me its worth to see the film. After watching the film i am sure u will believe me that i am not wrong.
I really llllllllllllllllllllllloved the film, especially chemistry between three of them (Salman, ajay & asin). it rocks man.
Yes, Khailid does have a problem with everyone who is better than his pet Shahrukh in any way. A good entertaining Salman Khan movie is not something easily digestible for Khalid and his likes. So, they will bring out all the crap in their mind in their special styles.
excellent review.
but ranvijay singh was not in namaste london.
but this is definitely not his first movie. he was in some recent b-grade flick – TOSS
Hi Khalid
I am sorry to say this, but :
All your reviews seem so “acidic”. Its like every Friday, You get up in the morning to vent out all your anger through the film you are reviewing.
I have watched the films YOU directed , and I must admit I never felt they are even close to the bar you have set for other film makers.
I know films nowadays are very ordinary in every manner, but you seem to be just keen to ” tear apart ” every film.
Please keep your personal issues aside and review films as a common man would, NOT as “Mr Khalid Mohamed “.
Regards
Abhijit
actually watching Shakalaka Boom Boom now… not a bad movie at all … badly made.. yes… performances and things bad.. costumes bad, lot of things bad… Story is GOOD! … chalo KM saab isi bahane shakala boom boom ki publicity ho chali … now to watch London Dreams..
yeah Shakalaka boom boom .. not a bad movie at all …
dude, dialogues by our very own.
Anurag Kashyap did? wow … though I was more hooked up by the way the story curved…. not a new subject… we have had similarly lined movies earlier maybe just that the character placements were a little different and so were situations (if there is an exact similar movie made in past, let me know d watch that as well) … but yeah not a greatly made movie made sure that I was looking only at the story… n Bobby Deol did a pretty decent job … just a facelift and a decent haircut could ve made him better… dialogues, some of them, m not too sure were only Anurag’s … ’saraswati nahi kachda nikalta hai tumhare muuh se’ sounded more like the south indian movies dubbed in hindi for some reason… but otherwise a decent flick on DVD…
“totally destroyed by a story-script which is about as convincing as a technicolour zebra”
god-level sirji
Khalid Mohammed is a good script writer himself and proved himself with scripts like Mammo,Sardari Begum and Zubaida. He failed miserably as a director though. Succumbed under the pressure to deliver a commercial hit for Mr.Guha and given us Fiza and then lost it totally with Silsiley and another dud which I can’t recall. He had given 5 starts to Dev-D which I personally think is only cause he wanted to find a place in PFC as I have been reading his reviews since 1987 and almost read all of them and hence know what kind of ratings / reviews he gives to which films.
Sometimes his style of writing confuses reader and hence ratings come to the rescue to make out what he actually mean.
But I wonder if we at PFC should actually bash K.M as I found PFC to be biased as well and anyone who doesn’t appreciate movies like Oye Lucky Lucky Oye / Dev D / No Smoking is considered outcast.
Our very own Mr.Kashyup who has written dialogues of Kurbaan did not have guts to correct the title of that movie to Qurban. ANy one who knows little bit of Urdu knows writing it as Kurban is wrong.Weather it is KJo’s K Fixation or Rensil’s lack of intellect we don’t know but I am sure Mr.Kashyup knows the correct pronounciation and spelling. Reminds me of his scene in Luck By Chance ( khoon nahin Khooon) and later changes it to Murder.
i seriously dont agree with this statement.. “But I wonder if we at PFC should actually bash K.M as I found PFC to be biased as well and anyone who doesn’t appreciate movies like Oye Lucky Lucky Oye / Dev D / No Smoking is considered outcast”… Anurag had faced flak at PFC also for no-smoking…and people have explicitly shared their views about mainline (YRF, Dharma, Mukta arts etc) cinema..
Even Anurag abused K.M for criticizing No Smoking. People may have their own views on YRF / Dharma and Anurag but then PFC is the only place where Oye Lucky / Ek Chaalis / Dev D / No Smoking / Aamir are appreciated so much even more than what they are actually worth and hence it gives an impression that those are biased. Just ask yourself had Khalid given 5 stars to Dev D if he was still writing for TOI?
TOI still gave 5 stars to Dev D. And reagarding kurbaan, title is decided by the producer or director. How can someone who has written the dialogues can have a say in this.
I agree title is decided by Dir / Producer and I would not have raised this had Anurag not been associated with this venture as eveyone knows about Karan’s fixation with K word. Point is Anurag has been roped in to write dialogues and could have raised this point. It is an issue of intllect and awareness about the language. Now someone will argue it is not an Urdu but a Hindi movie but then even in Hindi it is not spelt that way.
When someone with Anurag’s calibre ventures into a subject then expectaiton are high. It would have been even more daring to take some other literary gem from Indian literature and bring it on celluloid and set it in today’s day and age rather than done to death Devdas. I can’t expect Karan or Ghai or Sujoy Ghosh to do it.
Nauman,
I do not wish to join issue on your take on KM and AK. To each his own. But to bring silly points into an arguement is asking for criticism. No expert on Urdu has dictated that Qurbaan has to be spelt in a particular way. Each language has its own nuances. The pronounciation of “Q” in Qurbaan doesn’t exist in English. Like the pronounciation of “GH” in Ghazal doesnt exist. Clearly, the first syllable of the English word Queen isn’t supposed to be pronounced the same way as Qurbaan. Yes, there are some general standards a lot of people use to bring in those cross language nuances, doesn’t mean to deviate from them is intellectually inferior. If that were the case, there would be a dozen English spelling variations of every Hindi/Urdu or any word in another langauge. I too would have had a problem if the spelling of the word was wrong in the pharsi script. So to say that someone did not have the guts to correct the title of the movie sounds laughable. Because, there is nothing to be corrected in the first place.
Hi Saurabh,
Please read my comments before criticizing.
I had mentioned earlier in Luck By Chance the whole scene / joke was based on this pronunciation issue where Anurag gets mad at the heroine who can’t pronounce Khoon correctly and then ends up changing it to “murder” and it was supposed to highlight lack of intellect / awareness.
Spelling Qurabaan as Kurbaan only reflects lack of linguistic proefficiency.People in Maharashtra spell Feroz as Firo(j). In Hyderabad Qabarastaan ( grave yard) is written as (Kh)abrastan. This is done because people start writing the way they pronounce which is not remaining true to the original language to which the word belongs.
Urdu and English both have 2 distinct words to represent sound k and hence it is expected to use K and Q appropriately.Anyone who knows both the language will be uncomfortable accepting it as it is.
last released kjo movie was titled dostana…no K there….
Waiting for your FUNNY review on Aladin…. Let’s see you do THAT to Sujoy Ghosh’s movie!!!!!
iska kya matlab hai bhai?
Iska matlab yeh hain ki again, Mr. Bachchan will be asked to enrol in the ‘basics of acting’ class after Bhoothnath!!!!
haan lekin ..”lets see you do that…. ” wow.. Raj Thakeray ki yaad aa gayee..
@Anjo
@PS
Nothing to do with AB or KM’s past comments on anyone….. And in no way was this a threat (PS you have this brilliant ability to misunderstand my messages)
I was just daring him to do THIS to one of pfc’s OWN!!!!! Just to prove to the world that there is no bias and this is not an MMC…..
arre dost sucker… i cannot recollect if this has happened before… anyways, chal na.. at least this way both of us and others like us got some clarity na…
@ sucker – i totally got what you were trying to say bro; i was just trying to gage different angles from which the movie could be attacked!!!!! And reading in reviews about Mr. Bachchan’s supposedly OTT performance, I was reminded of Mr. Mohamad’s rejoinder to Mr. Bachchan’s performance in BHOOTNATH!
khalid…Why does ur review seem like you are trying too hard to write…. it seems like a laboured effort..dont write for the sake of writing and to ensure that “brand Khalid” is not diluted… write whatever you actually feel… in the language you relate to…. this is hardly you… am not sure of the movie but your review hardly deserves any stars…
Sir,
Can you please make your review more constructive for the film maker and more useful for the audience??
Your command over the language is very impressive but repititive use of word twisting and rhyming to derive humor is good at first but starts to grate after a while.
Hoping criticism from a nobody wont irritate you and you will take it in good humor
Is this some newspaper or wat
music is superhit.
Ranvijay was NOT there in Namaste London
!!!! Pls get your facts right.
this is the best performance of salman wanted was a hit but i liked this movie better then wanted and dont go by reviews these people cant make one good movie by themself and try to criticise others first see what shit movies you have given
Never thought i would feel like this but –
Salman Khan is actually better than Ajay Devgan in the movie. In fact his sequences are the ones which are watchable …. in this otherwise lousy movie.
Overall a waste of such talented starcast.
the best thing abt the movie was the trailer of ‘Rann’ in the intermission.
Ajay Devgn is a gd actr.
she seems to have the word smug tattoed on her pursed lips.
But him trying to pull off a rock-star act is a bit too much much, even by Bollywood’s ludicrous standards. And the heroine-Asin, well-
He is not a rock star for god’s sake!
This is funny….this is the 4th or the 5th movie that KM is reviewing on this site…and everytime he does that, the comments section looks so similar. It starts with a few people liking the style of KMs writing, but the majority others just take great pleasure in criticizing the critic himself, ridiculing him, making remarks bout his filmi failures, just stating the same old same old. Cmon people this is pfc, just take the review for what it is and comment acc. Just dont rake up the past and keep blaming KM for the same thing again and again. Worst case if you dont like it dont read his review. Its not as if this is the first time he is writing like this. He has been doing this for years.
Darling, KM keeps repeating his mischiefs. So, the comments too keep repeating. Got it?
I will watch the movie on DVD but simply loved the review.
The way of writing was hilarious especially the para that contains info abt OM Puri’s character :P
Khalid sir…. last time too i wrote, i love your reviews and satire, absolutely wonderful. but there s one thing i wanted to point this time – the music in london dreams, may see off key to you, but hear it again – Shankar saab, Ehsaan and loy are the masters of fusion – they have blended the rock concert-like music with the indian classical very well. i have studied music, although that doesnt give me a right that my word is the last – but still – i think songs except one or two – the rest are pretty neat. its a work that the SEL team would be proud of.
music is superhit. tapke tapke masti tapke…
Dear, Watch ‘London Dreams’ as well. It is a good one time watch. Don’t trust Khalid. He is a biased, wicked reviewer.
chk out this review by a salman fan: http://blessed-curse.blogspot.com/2009/10/london-dreams-real-khan-stood-up.html
Dear Mr.Vipul Shah u r not good enough to make cult hits and clsssics as OM SHANTI OM(4 STARS),MAIN HOON NA(3 AND 1/2 STAR),KABHI KHUSHI KABHI GUM(5 STARS With Mr.Khalid shouting top of his voice”This is what entertainment is”) so why try….You definitely cannot if you don’t have SRK….But you can do yourself a favour by doing a favour to someone who is going place to place hunting producer to maintain his “Rutba”.
Gross … not the movie but the review …
Stop bashing KM please!!
He has been writing reviews long before many of us started reading. This has been his style always. We grew up reading his reviews in TOI. They were sometimes correct about the film, sometimes not, as we found out later after watching the movies. But they were always funny.
I didn’t like any of the films that KM made, but that doesn’t mean anything for his skills as a writer and journalist. I am not sure if KM defends his movies and class them classics. For example, Sajid Khan actually does that. He calls that crap he made Hey Baby, a master piece and he is not joking when he says that.
I am not sure if KM is biased or not. But this review doesn’t reflect any bias to me. You may disagree with him and still like to film, that’s up to you. Some people even loved KI and people are watching Blue, even though most critics call them bad films. Otherwise these films wouldn’t be big hits.
Leave KM alone and stop worshipping AK. AK can do with a little less worshipping on PFC.
“He has been writing reviews long before many of us started reading.”
Do you except everything said, believed and published before your birth as absolute truth?
Oh Come on!
My point is why accept something just because it has been running since we were not able to decide what’s good and what’s bad.
I have no particular issue with this review as I seriously am against a review published on Thursday for films releasing on Friday.
Now, what kind of an argument is that? The point was raised for two reasons.
- One, he has a body of work as a journalist and critique and deserves respect for that.
- Two, his style has always been the same. He is not making it up, as some of you seem to point out.
And, go ahead, attack his review and pull it apart if need be. That’s why blogs are different from newspapers because here you get instant feedback. But why resort to personal attacks? Or bring up references to 5 stars given to K3G or comment made about Amitabh in Bhootnath. That has nothing to do with this review.
I am sorry I meant Critic, not Critique, please forgive my poor English.
What skills are you talking about…….Sur ehe is ancient but nowhere close to good. !!!
His tyle is super shoddy , repetitive and utterly juvenile to say the least..
It is a HUGE dissapoointment to see KM becoming a regular feature at PFC !!!
Your writing makes me puke …
I thought Id escaped Jug Suraiyya, you and Bachii for good ..
No clue how you made it here man…
BTW I am not endorsing London dreams at all. Im sure its exactly how he says it is…..although I wouldnt make comparisons to other movies…”Rock On” did not necessarily Rock me either !!
My problem is with KM’s writing ….I absolutely refuse to call this style or Brand !!!
Effort is indeed laboured …trying too hard and falling flat….May be a change of shtyle is in order for you KM Saahab…
I am glad you are not the one deciding who gets to write here and who doesn’t.
The day people like KHALID MOHMAD and his followers will stop writing reviews…our bollywood industry will double it’s annual gross….didn’t even feel like reading the review…initial few lines said it all…
really?
Whats that about Wishes Being Horses, Pigs Flying, Blah, Blah?
Khalid…I suggest you read some of Magiks semi- reviews…Monu & Tony. Its GENUINE and heartwarming to say the least…
YOu might also want to read our RK and Ratnakar’s detail oriented and sincere articles to learn how to pack in information….
Its never too late for an old horse to learn new tricks !!!
LOL, I second darkndusky….it is high time for khalid to learn how to write reviews :D
@ Dark and dusky,
If you like Magik’s writings-go read what he writes. Like Ratnakar’s writings? Read what Ratnakar writes. Why should Khalid Mohd follow what others do? If you don’t like Khalid Mohd, don’t read what he writes. Its as simple as that.
PFC is about Freedom of speech. If ‘our’ Magik, RK and Ratnakar are more pertinent, they will draw more readings, comments, appreciation than Khalid’s non ‘GENUINE’ reviews.
Khalid is Khalid. Let him be.
It’s quite clear that you’re miffed by the cavalier attitude a celeb-critic has towards big budget films that you have high hopes and celebratory aspirations from.
There are plenty of people who like what he writes. Why should he change for Your sake?
bejesus…ranjeet….it seems you never read what I wrote carefully enuff…..
I never said Im endorsing London dreams and actually said that I totally agree with KM ….Its his so called writing “shtyle ” that has ppl drooling ….I have problem with.
Its downright boring, monotonous an no better than “Tashan’s ” dialogues….Overdose of “KM” like writing is what I am scared of…Ive had enuff of his stuff in TOI….Am seriously worried about him become a regular reviewer at PFC..Doesnt any other publication want him any more :-) That certainly reflects the quality of his articles…
Maybe an old horse like KM “shouldnt” learn new tricks….
He sure is flogging the “same Old dead horse
in every review though …. ..
“The day people like KHALID MOHMAD and his followers will stop writing reviews…our bollywood industry will double it’s annual gross”
The day the media stops criticizing the Maharashtra Govt, farmer’s suicides will stop automatically, and tribals will no longer die of starvation.
The day we stop criticizing the Home Ministry and Police Dept, there will be no more terror attacks.
The day we stop all kinds of reviews, criticism everything, we will be a land of milk and honey, peace and prosperity.
Have people seen the movie or not? What a waste of a discussion. It is good movie and Salman Khan has given a mind-blowing performance. He is equally good in comic as well as serious scenes. He deserves an award for ‘London Dreams’.
i dont know , why there is no mention of prasoon joshi.., god he had put up some good words really well. S-E-L had given average music to his excelllent lyrics. Now a days i m juts hummin this line..
AAzmane aa..
peshevar hawaa..
mushkile saja.
khwab na sage..
jindagi thage..
phir bhi jaane kyu ..
ummede jage..
can’t thin of anything better than this.
“khanabdosh” was a real treat of words. and the best song of the album.
Ratnakar bhai,
Is ‘doubling the Gross’ all that matters to you? If that becomes every filmmaker’s mantra-God Help indian cinema.
The rest of your rhetoric was just that-rhetorics. Please explain HOW farmer suicides can stop if the media stops criticizing the Maharastra govt.If you can,you stand a good chance of becoming the next big thing on starvation deaths after the much celebrated Mr. P. Sainath.
@ Manoj
For starters that doubling the Gross statement, was not mine, and i had explicitly put that in Quotes, looks like you missed the point. And i am surprised you actually took those statements of mine seriously, inspite of me putting across the twisted icon.
@manoj
Yaar, you missed the sarcasm.
OMG! You had me laughing on the floor in stitches! Your word play, the insight, it was all too funny and – unfortunately – all too true… Thanks for the fabulous review, mightily more entertaining than the film – except for the songs!
