Nowhere to hide..I can’t even say it was another Anurag kashyap..the only other anurag kashyap is a 13 year old spelling bee champion..too much of a mozart to be a part of this himesh ensemble..the joke is on me..i didn’t even get paid enough for this creative nadir..the cheques stopped coming way back..so can’t even say i was paid a lot because no lot is a lot for it..what was i thinking..was i thinking..anywhere i go they have this strangest smile on there face and i wonder are they thinking shakespeare or they are just happy..most of them just look at me and say, hmmmm shaka laka.. worst is every time the promos come on air my daughter calls out to my maid and says,”shamsu..papa ki picture” and i try and tell her don’t say it out loud.. i hope she doesn’t tell her friends in school..or her teacher, or her school bus driver.. i am in that music video right now where everyone is looking into the camera and is just smiling..they are not shocked..they knew it..they were waiting..and they are actually carrying bouquets for the camera and guess who is the camera..and i am wondering was this a conspiracy..it would be so much easier to deal with if it was..suneel darshan pay me a crore..hope i learn my lesson..

Saturday after the film came out..i woke up early to read the reviews and they called it everything from “its so bad its a masterpiece” to not bothering to say anything..i hope i could say it was my grindhouse..why did i do it.. i wasn’t even so desperate for it..or for money.. i ignored all the warning signs.. i can talk about all the rewriting that went on in my absence but was it a classic to begin with.. no..two musicians in the suneel darshan world calling themselves genius..and everybody around them believing they were geniuses..and what have they to show for their musical genes.. the worst of himesh reshammiya..have i learnt from it..i hope so..i was expecting to be ripped apart on PFC..but nobody bothered..it can’t be that bad..or is everybody being kind toone of their own..do i bloody deserve to be called a their own..am looking desperately for someone to blame it on, but can’t find anyone except my vastu, fengshui and numerilogical errors..the actual dialogues were written by aannuurraagg kkashhyap..

Man, when they called it shakalaka boom2, and said rahul nanda thinks the title will look good on the posters and all went YEAAAH, i should have walked out then..but one has to understand..like leonidas says.. no retreat no surrender.. the xerxes and his army of immortals has got me.. i actually stayed on.. pl somebody tell me i was brave.. tell me i was preparing for glory and not whorey.. but then did i take so much interest in the film when it was going on.. no.. was i there to tell them where everyone was going wrong.. no..did i fight for it.. no..did i care..no..well..when you don’t care then this is what you get baby..commercial or not..when you make a choice you gotta care and i didn’t..i didn’t bother..when they called me i went..what they asked me to write..i wrote..i did not add anything to it..so all i can say for it is I AM SORRY and that is not enough..all i can say is never again..

Gawd..i wasn’t even bloody cynical when i said yes..all my friends were there to tell me why was i doing it and i just mumbled “you know”..before anyone says it to me i break out with an apology..sorry boss..Rajesh pandey koh toh kone mein le jaa kar maroonga, baaki ka kya karoon..

Moral of the story- next time one does something like it make sure the fees is fifty lacs without credit..better still mr. kashyap, avoid..you don’t need it anymore..

    Hello All!
There’s a news. Thanks to AK. Anurag Kashyap repenting SBB and Water in INDIAFM (AK giving interview to Indiafm!!!). This one’s awesome. http://indiafm.com/features/2007/04/11/2506/index.html

    @Anurag.
Thank you man! Well I just wanna say a word or two.

Deepa Mehta – Just like SLB, she too is ( atleast for me) overrated. And this SKJs and Tarans going ga-ga for her film make me really think about the Indian critics. That nonsense SKJ says, “it hits you where it hurts the most.” Now what’s so awesome about water? Just showing a couple of cliched scenes doesn’t make a great film. The fact is that “real” plight of the widows was too minimized. BY THE WAY, DIALOGUES WERE BRILLIANT I don’t know if you the fact but Water is PLAGIARIZED from a novel by bengali writer, SUNIL GANGOPADHYAY. It’s called SEI SAMAY (THAT TIME). But just like she deceived you, she didn’t bother to credit SG. And takes all the accolades herself. I seriously wanna find what’s in the mind of these oscar people. Firstly WATER over RDB. Maybe I’m being SENTIMENTAL. Another quintessence of the wicked-ness of Academy, choosing THE LIVES OF OTHERS over VOLVER????? Though Kunal Kohli is not a great filmmaker, I liked his comments on WATER (and his oscar to you too!). What’s your take?

    2) I just wanna know if your equations with Amitabh Bachchan has changed. Because two years ago you told about his performance in black (foolish critics say it’s the best ever) that it was good only by filmfare standards (that’s true). 4 months ago I liked the hilarious “award function at jalsa”. Even two months ago you were qouted, “You can’t talk about films and industry because Mr [Amitabh] Bachchan or somebody else might get upset.” Now you say “he makes anything sound incredible.” and you love hearing him mouthing your lines. Please elaborate. I’m not attacking you , just asking.

    3) GURU, we all know that you were the one to pen GURU. You wrote it till the turkey portions (absolutely awesome). But you parted ways with MANI due to creative differences. You wanted to concentrate on his personal lifestyle rather than romantic relation with his wife. Now everytime something “different” from bollywood stable, critics go gaga over it. but i thought it was no masterpiece though it was “good”. Mani has gone overboard promoting his superhero, saint GURUkant. The film glorifies all kinds of misdeeds in business. till the intermission it was going well- guru has made it all by himself. but right after everything goes awry. he shows that guru is flesh-blood human being that he has characteristic flaws but goes glorifying his character and shows that it’s inevitable in business to avoid taxes, customs. Really? Does he know this film will distract lots of men who want to achieve success by perseverance? I think you wanted show his personal life because you wanted to show that he doesn’t absorb the oney of the people and IS one of them leading a life so simple. Even greater, he has portrayed all the journalists as villains who want to unmask them. And gawd, he compares his ruthless bizman to GANDHI!!! now what was that? Gandhi’s freedom struggle and his ruthless ambition are the same???? And people call it masterpiece? I am left speechless. Isn’t that a try to prove how great ambanis are (well, friends of bachchans)

Do you think MR is another DM who doesn’t bother to acknowledge you?
What’s you take on this and what modifications would you have done if you were in the complete writing process?

    Please reply.
    Thank you.

@Charles Foster Kane aka Antonio Ricci, WATER plagiarised from SEI SAMAY? Dude you might have met the God of Indian cinema in person, but let’s not be too confident about things we are not so sure about! I’ve not seen WATER yet, but SEI SAMAY is a novel about Renaissance in nineteenth century Bengal, and WATER, correct me if I’m wrong, has nothing in common with the theme of the book, apart from maybe the timeline and Bengali characters. There is, indeed, a young widow character in the novel, but the book in general has little to do with the plight of widows in Benares of the time.

I have started reading ur blog from yesterday and finding it quite rude. I have not seen any one of ur movies but i heard quite a lot abt ur film black friday.
But in this post u are pretending as if u are criticizing yourself but u are actually pointing fingers at others. U say as u were not interested in the project so u have fucked the dialoges, in ur own words.
As if someone has dragged u into the project. If u were really good at ur work then even if the film was bad ur work could be noticed. Reading this post , i feel that u have started taking yourself very seriously. So before someone pointing at u let yourself do this.
So plz dnt take the work if are not able to take the responsibility. If u have taken the responsibility stand by it whether its bad r good. I am not saying here just go on telling good things abt the film or ur work.

    @Amby,
You are right that sei samay is about 19th century ren. in bengal. it’s a huge novel. i’m not saying that they copied the novel or the characters outright. book DOES concentrate (in one part) about the plight of widows. Now the makers will claim that such events happpen all over. But the resemblance is too much to be a “coincidence”. If you see you’d realize. Atleast they could have come up with an idea very different. ZINDA-OLDBOY had no connection because there was an incest in oldboy and none in zinda; the setting was in bankok rather than seoul; lara was not sanjay’s daughter. but don’t we still call it a copy? Take time and give a rethink. But the point you pointed out is very good. Thank you! These things make a healthy discussion.

I really never had any problem with Anurag writing for money for all these blockbuster people. It has its advantages.
    1) You’ll find a couple of great lines in the worst films. :) )
2)He is in touch with the money people for when he will need to make his kind of films.
But since we started this conversation I have started to feel weird about this whole self-flogging by Anurag. It is I think a very smart publicity move. Anurag knows his fans & their power on the internet & he is exploiting that to the maximum. Kudos to him!
But what bothers me is that this is not the first time he has worked for money. He has always been very honest about it & I admire that in him. So why apologise now? Because your name is credited this time? And the producers didn’t pay up?
Would he have written the same article if they had paid him rightly, or if the movie was doing very well?

I didn’t understand your point of view at all. Maybe I am missing something here. You drop out of a much superior product, GURU, because you had creative differences with Mani but you stay along and write SLBB even though you know that its crap. I simply cant understand the paradox here. Is it that Mani didn’t pay you much for you to continue writing GURU and that Suneel Darshan was much more generous in paying you?

Dont know exact age of Anurag Kashyap, but roughly he shd be in his mid 30s. IMDB writes Satya in 1998. That means he might have written sometime in 1997 so 10 years ago, he might have been in his mid 20s and Satya as a first film, should be a praiseworthy attempt. How you can say that the person, who is getting a chance to write a film at the age of 25, was not honest while writing it. On the contrary any person will put his most honest energies and focus in his first attempt.
Perhaps you selected wrong examples for criticism. Its seldom that one writes a character like Bheekhu Mahtre in Satya. Dialogues in Yuva were matching with the charecters, whatever fictcious they were. and often dialogues tried to bring reality touch also. When Om Puri unashamedely welcomes these young turks in assembly he says scary but wonderfully realistic dialogues.
Re: other films like Nayak, you may be right but Satya and Yuva were results of good writing.
Sorry for disagreement but your honesty factor compelled me to comment.
Because anybody who wishes to make career in films, will be utterly honest in his first film. result may be dependent on his talent but efforts cant be without honesty.

Everything needs to be put in context. SLBB wasn’t going to be a classic at the outset and everyone (besides Sanjeev Dharshan and Upen Patel) knew that… you had to work within that vision and we all get that…

When u say that u did it for the money i fail to understand asto why did u need to say yes to a person like suneel darshan who does not know a jackshit abt movies…
U could have got the money with any other bigshot filmmaker in the industry who are involved in making those so called mediocre love stories, banal family dramas and asinine thrillers…Atleast your dialogues could have made those sort of movies bearable…
Anyways i am waiting for NO SMOKING…

RK, Satya and Yuva were indeed splendidly written films…except, Om Puri’s character (“Prosonjit” Bhattacharya) was one of the most ridiculous caricatures ever to have been part of Indian meaningful cinema. Such characters are omnipresent in Bollywood per se, but coming from the pen of Anurag Kashyap, it was disappointing to note him reinforcing an oft-used cliche of a Bengali leader who spoke his own version of Hindi. Event the accent was hardly Bengali! Perhaps that’s why Mr. Bhattacharya stands in a different plane of reality than a Michael Mukherjee or Lallan Singh or Arjun….More like the handiwork of Mehul Kumar or Anil Sharma rather than AK. Another of your characters rewritten, Mr. Kashyap?

@Anurag, got it….but don’t you think his ‘take’ on the character made it the single most unrealistic and odd part in the whole film, one that stood out like a sore thumb? Maybe that’s stretching things a bit too far, but imagine lines like “Hum jo bola woh tumhare matha me dhuka?” I remember in one of your articles here in PFC how fondly you referred to Lallan Singh as your baby and how Aby’s Baby failed to get into his skin. How could a person with such fond possessiveness over his creations not resent this?

i have seen ur work in Satya, which was amazing and really Satya in itself was worth for me to be a part of ur fan club..

and then one after one i was goin on noticing you and i found that really u were amazing..

Yuva could have been a milestone for you but, i can understand that there would have been many problems as you yourself were not the director.

BLACK FRIDAY – you proved youself but the basic problem occured with the advertisment campaigns.
but nyways black friday was an awesome cinematic experience that one could ever forget.. and yeah really THANX for that..!!

again you should be proud of films like Honeymoon Travels.. and yeah i have forgot SHOOL..again a film with whom everyone would lOve himself to be related with and the fact is that you were the one whom anyone could ever miss associating with Shool..

and now except then being a part of all this kind of intellectual stuff you have also done PENGUINS-a lOve stOry..which in itself is a grreat thing.

Although Satya remains my fav film, I was only disappointed with the language used in the film which sounded more from North Indian Politician. I definitely believe that script got screwed up because of Saurabh Shukla (His subsequent work on acting and directing has amply proved it)

That thing was pretty much corrected in Black Friday (The dialogue and language in the tabela scene was mind-blowing – bang on)

    62: Amby,

Prasonji Chakravorty (Om Puri’s character) speaks Hindi with Bangla tone. Can there be any standard rules for speaking a langauge other than your mother tongue. India’s different states speak English and Hindi, with different tones and even in same state, people speak with different tone and pronunciation of same word is different.
Perhaps I dont get your point. But if Om Puri, being a bangla character speaks wrong Balnga then it can be seen with critical eyes but his hindi phonetics can be taken with liberal ways.
Often we dont mind, when characters of Chokher Bali speaks almost chaste Hindi though they are typical bangalis. If director wishes them to speak excusive langauge it is fine.
I am not sure but perhaps many people who live near Bihar side in Bengal, may use that kind of tone which Om Puri has used. and then people belonging to east and west bengal have different style of hindi speaking.

Anurag, agreed that the writer has to take quite a bit of crap lots of times. Every second director, overlooking the mediocrity of their own craft, laments the lack of good writers and scripts. I’m sure it’s frustrating to see a completely different version of your script on screen. Also true is the fact that despite the writer being one of the most important pivots of a film, he/she is not given the due credit (unlike the era of Salim-Javed at their peak where their names were sufficient for a film to be sold). Despite all the unfairness, I still think that though you’ve been critical of yourself, you’re not actually willing to take the blame for SLBB. It’s really easy to disown something if you’re not satisfied with it. You say you knew that the film was heading nowhere. Why didn’t you just walk out of it? Don’t tell me that it would’ve been professionally unethical because what you are doing now is not very ethical either. If your cheques haven’t reached, sort it out with the person concerned. If you think doing the film was a mistake, accept it and move on. Ripping it apart is no redemption.

I agree Anurag could have put forth more of an effort to do the best with what he had to work with.

But at the end of the day the person who has the final say over the product is, in this case, Suneel Darshan. If Anurag wrote what he thought were some fiery, controversial, in your face dialogues and Suneel thought “Nahin yaar, yeh sab hamare family audiences to acha nahin lage ga” all he has to say is “Isko thoda change kardo”… and he doesn’t even have to say that to Anurag.
He can say that to whatever other writer he was working with and thats the end of that.

There’s only so much a writer can do. This is why many a writer have turned to directing and many a director have turned to writing. Its the only way to stay true to what was envisioned during the scripting stage.

@RK, none and nobody in this country, whether he is Bengali or not, speaks Hindi the way uttered by Om Puri in Yuva. Many Bengalis do speak pretty fucked up Hindi, as is pretty well-known, but what Om Puri’s character reinforced was a cliche about Bengali-Hindi (reminds one of a similar cliche, that of Southie-Hindi….most Southie characters in Hindi Commercial Cinema speak an accent which none of the Southie peoples do), reminiscent of a similar caricature, that of the Bengali leader in a pot-boiler called ‘Krantiveer’, who kept screaming “E na cholbe” at the slightest provocation….the way some people in Bengal speak Hindi is undoubtedly pretty queer and comical in a way, but Mr. ‘Prosonjit’ (hardly a Bengali name; the nearest Bengali equivalent is ‘Prosenjit’) speaks with an accent which is unidentifiable with any part of India…he is ust one in a long line of mainstream/masala ‘funny guys’ who speak with a regional twang. The question of his credibility as a beleivable character (and the obvious absence of any research that went into it) arises BECAUSE the creator is Anurag Kashyap….a man who we have come to respect and look up to, for his extraordinary convictions and commitment to all that is meaningful and credible in cinema, and who is one of the flag bearers of the ‘new wave’….
