Will She be in love with him ?
————————————————

Eyes of theirs,
had been talking to each other,
since days and months,
all, that can be expressed without saying,
was expressed,
but humans need to express,
humans need assurance,
and boy broke his silence first,
and expressed his inner desires to her.

But inner truths don’t,
necessarily match with,
outside restrained behaviour and
limitations of the practical life.

“I don’t make friends“ She said with anger on her face.

“But I remain naturally curious to make good friends” He smiled.

She reminded,” Your religion is not same as mine”

“That is fine,
but if Gods are also different,
then you must pray to your God for me,
and I will ask your wellbeing from my deity” He pursueded.

She did not say anything but kept staring at him with her big eyes.

“There may be many dissimilarities between you and me,
and they are there indeed,
but there may be hidden some similarities also in our personalities”
He moved further his charming ways.

She stubbornly protested,” Life is not bed of roses”

“I too am agreed completely” He bowed his head.

Her lips trembled but said nothing.

But seeing her curious eyes waiting for him to say further,
He said,
”There may not be necessity of resort of friendship on,
hard paths of life,
but its existence may be necessary”.

She followed silence again,
though her body language was changed.

He found some weakness in her outside resistance,
and continued his voyage of dreams,
“You walk one step ahead,
from the other end of the river of dissimilarities,
flowing between us,
see half the distance is already filled by me from my side,
standing at the middle I offer you,
not only my friendship but my love also,
“Will you also be in love with me ?”

* * * * * * * * * * *

Love which happens on its own does not know any calculations. If hearts are open and innocents then love does not ask cast, colour, passport, religion etc. It just happens and victims have to follow the flow of emotions generated inside their hearts.

Love affair between two characters belonging to entirely different backgrounds has been quite interesting subject for literature and films alike. This ensures enough flammable and dramatic moments in the plays, stories, novels and films. Such love affairs provide grounds for sudden twists in the plots and maintain the alive interest of viewer/reader in the subject.

These twists bring heroic and larger than life touches in the lives of involved characters and audience/reader get the benefit of watching or reading something interesting. Most often readers and audiences have to superimpose the lives of characters on their own lives and they have to find interesting things and only then their curiosity levels can remain intact and in such love affairs they find such material to fuel their imagination.

Though recently released Jodha Akbar also falls in this category where main characters belong to different religion but still its love story of an emperor and a queen and thus can be put outside of the category.

Since so many years hindi cinema has been making films where lovers belong to entirely different backgrounds. Apart from rich-poor backgrounds, we can look in to other categories also. Each of the following film needs a strictly dedicated full length post.

[1] Jogan (1950)

A common villager (Dilip Kumar) falls in love with a lady mendicant (Nargis) and thus starts a mental conflict for both of them. Film deeply explores the confused but uncontrolled feelings of young lover man and suppressed feelings of young lady hermit. She does not accept or can’t accept his love but is she above the human feelings? Or its imposed mendicancy because of conditioning due to training of living like a nun? It’s a delicate and one of the unique films, hindi cinema has ever produced. This shade was again exploited in Chitralekha where hermit (Ashok Kumar) can’t resist his attraction towards dancer Chitralekha (Meena Kumari).

This shade was again exploited in Chitralekha where hermit (Ashok Kumar) can’t resist his attraction towards dancer Chitralekha (Meena Kumari).

[2] Sujata (1959)

Bimal Roy’s sensitive film touches the disease of cast differentiation. An upper cast Sunil Dutt falls in love with lower cast Nutan. S.D Burman’s soulful music and sensitive portrayals of Sunil Dutt and Nutan and so brilliant direction and handling of a sensitive story by Bimal Roy, all factors make it an immortal film.

[3] Julie (1975)

Julie (Lakshmi Chaya) is a christian girl. Shashi (Vikram) is a Hindu boy. Julie is friend of his younger sister. After some resistance from Julie’s side Shashi is able to allure her and there starts a passionate love affair which does not remain limited to talks and platonic level only and they explore each other on physical level also. Result is unwed motherhood status for the Julie. Apart from the strong story, that shows tormented journey of Julie, Rajesh Roshan’s wonderful music is also one of the high point behind the timeless popularity of this film.

[4] Ankhiyon ke Jharokhe se (1978)

Sachin is a Hindu boy and Ranjita represents a christian girl. Their on campus clash and first quarrel and later love kind of story makes it a youthful film. Boy has to leave his father’s home to marry her and when it looks that everything is going fine, autumn comes in their life when she is fallen seriously ill. An inspired version of Erich Segal’s Love Story, AKJS, remains a good film. Ravindra Jain’s pleasant music raises the attraction of the film.

[5] Ek Duje ke Liye (1981)

Kamal Hassan is a south Indian and Rati Agnihotri is a North Indian. They speak different languages and cant express them through words but these differences don’t stop them to fall in love. Not only LP’s wonderful music but film also had got tremendous success when it was released. It was Kamal Hassan’s debut film in hindi. This sad love story remains alive in the list of love stories ever made in hindi cinema.

[6] Bombay (1995)

Mani Ratnam was sitting on the super success of his critically acclaimed Roja when he wished to go for a burning topic in BOMBAY.
Post demolition of ram mandir/babri masjid structure, political scene was not so humble in India and Mani Ratnam’s cinematic exploitation of the situation felt the heat. Film created a big noise in society.
Though nation enjoyed kuchi kuchi rakamma, kehna hi kya and humma humma etc songs of the film but film remained controversial but this is also true that perhaps this controversy saved it from proper criticism also as far as cinematic criticism is concerned. Film was weaker than Roja in every department.

Then there are lesser known films like Ek Najar (1972) where a hindu young man (Amitabh Bachchan) falls in love with a muslim prostitute (Jaya Bhadurhi). This BR Ishara film, has many scenes and dialogues which may shake anybody. Lakshmikant Pyarelal managed Rafi to sing a wonderful gazal “Patta patta buta buta for this film”

There may be more such films which can fall under the mentioned interesting category.

Have seen only Juliee and Bombay only…. Juliee was good.
Actingwise Nadira and Om Prakash were better than leading cast. Sridevi looked so awkward at that young age;)….
Songs were something. Every song is good. like too much bhajan song – sancha nam tera….
Bombay…. Manisha was best part and except Kuchi Kuchi , picturisation of songs also dont look good now…….

    @Anand (1),
Thanks for comment. I was not sure because of faint memory about Sagar if there was really a clash in the main plot because of the fact that Rishi Kapoor was a Hindu and Dimple was a Christian. I did not recall Madhur Jaffery protested on this basis or on the usual basis of economical difference?
Religious difference was not given importance in shown in Bobby also else I could have mentioned that also. I could have included many other films but did not because of lack of clash over religious, colour or cast based difference. Films I have enlisted present major difference in big manner and stories revolve around that difference only.
    Hope its clear.

    @Krishn (2),
its true Manisha was better than other actors present in Bombay. Those were good years for her.

Julie was very good considering it does not simply tries to encash love story between two youth but it shows pathos of heroine because of her premarital mistakes.

film has not got usual Hindi film treatment and hence it still keeps its own position.

Lakshmi fitted very well in the role and story, treatment all made it a genuine film.

Vikram’s family is a wonderful portrayal on screen with different behaviour of different members towards people of other religion and Jalal Agha angle. How he thinks because he is Christian so Julie should love him and not Vikram. How Reeta Bhadurhi takes sides of her friend and not her brother.

and the picturisation of Sancha naam tera!! Only to be compared with Dum Maro Dum :)

    one must see JOGAN !!
Thanks for right link for the song – jalte hain jiske liye. Putting right link.

Ek Duje ke liye should not be first film for SP Bala subrahmanyam. Not sure but perhaps he had already sung “Raju, O daddy” song for Jeetendra in “Ek hi bhool”.

I also liked song “Yara Rub” in Socha na tha. sadly best song of film was kept once film was finished and names were started coming on screen.
    :(

Did not keep Socha na tha in list because its a sub plot and main story revoves around Abhay and Ayesha.
