Love pervades in silence
Some genius mind has written/said
“ Shabd to shor hain tamasha hai,
Maun hee prem ki bhasha hai ”[ Spoken words are nothing but exhibition of a noise,
Silence is the real language of love ]
A Poet has written
You smiled,
You did not talk to me,
But I felt that
I was waiting for long
for this moment only
Another brilliant and highly constructive mind has mentioned a beautiful thought
“ Where love exists, there silence seems very natural and joyous. When it is a matter
of loving someone silently then there is no comparison to this feeling of calmness.
Does there exist any desire to say something while looking lovingly at the lover ? ”
Love can not be explained in words. Recipie of love can not be published. When no language was here on earth and no word was invented then also love was present in the life of human being and if it happens that all languages are lost again then also feeling of Love will remain alive with the human being. Human being does not need to use language to express the love.
Animals don’t understrand our language and we don’t understand their ways of verbal communication but we, both the species, very well understand the language of love and we easily communicate with each other.
A small poem sums up very well the phenomenon of Love.
Love is an endless mystery
there is no other way,
than to be in love,
to understand it
Thankfully Hindi cinema has tried to capture such moments when love is propagated through silnece and where dialogues are not used.
Three top most moments are remembered here. There is no preference in these three choices and there is no personal comparison among three of them. They belong to three different situations but they all three bring joy to the audiences. All the three are quite closed to the heart.
(1) Mughal-i-Azam
Anarkali is getting ready and watching her image in the mirror when she listens that Miyan Tansen has started singing the raga. It is time for her to meet Prince Salim, who has invited her to his garden. Prince Salim is eagerly waiting there for her. Anarkali reaches to Salim’s palace, watching carefully here and there, so that others don’t see her. Her eyes are searching Salim also and they don’t find him in the big room. She finds him walking outside in the garden. She gets an anxious smile and takes a sigh. She reaches there with fast steps but stops as soon as he turns and sees her. He comes near and she throws a smile which is full of shyness. He stops near her and looks at her.
Its one thing to imagine the things but its really difficult to face them in real and now Anarkali is unable to bear this proximity of her lover, Prince Salim. This is their first ever meeting after confession of love. Now she needs support to stand otherwise she may fall with the burden of passionate feelings. She walks away from Salim as she does not have courage to take support of Salim’s body. She goes to stand near a pillar. Salim reaches there. He has to make first move. He holds the hand of Anarkali and her breathing becomes heavy.
They sit near each other. Formality of initial touches has been finished and a familiarity has been developed. She is assured now. He touches her face with a feather and she now shows a smile of familiarity. He plays with her face with the feather and she is getting joy from this soft touch. She is coming under the magic of love. Their eyes meet and she sees the desire in his eyes and she offers her eyes and lips to him. He is bending on her, catching every message of her eyes. His lips are approaching her lips and she bends down her eyes and surrenders to her lover.
Bahar is present there spreading jealousy in the atmosphere but lovers are unaware of her presence.
Anarkali iy lying and Salim is staring at her face and though her eyes are closed but she can feel the heat of his staring and she can not bear his looking and shyness occupies her and she covers her face with her Dupatta.
Camera can not intrude in the private moments of the lovers, deeply plunged in to the love of each other and as its their first ever meeting in solitude so intelligent camera goes away to explore the surroundings.
When it comes again on lovers then morning has spread the light all over. Chirping of birds wakes up Salim first.
Flowers, fallen from the tree, have covered the bodies of lovers and Salim is eager to see the face of his lover in the light of early morning. He is sitting near the head of Anarkali and he uncovers her face. She opens her eyes and sees in to eyes of Salim. A loving smile appears on her lips.
Rishi Vatsayan could have frozen this shot to advertise his famous book Kama Sutra.
Eroticism has never been captured so aesthetically and beautifully on screen. Everything is done without falling down to the level of exposure and without showing any bold scene of physical intimacy and yet its difficult to find a heart which does not start throbing heavily while watching this whole sequence.
Anarkali sits and sees the flowers resting on her body. She is mesmerised by the blessings of the tree under which they have been resting all through the night. She is mesmerised by the love of Salim. She is mesmerised by the whole affair. She slowly gets up and walks towards Salim who holds her and carries her away and she succumbs to his holding. She surrenders in to his love.

(2) Hum Dono
Dev Anand is waiting for his lover Saadhna. It is hard for him to pass this time of waiting. He sees the image of Saadhna in the lake. He is pleased with the image but to make it sure that it is not an illusion he throws a stone in to the water and her image is disrupted. He is sad.
He is sitting under a tree. Birds are chirping but nothing is cheering him up. Suddenly he listens that a tune is played in the air and he gets up. Tune is stopped and its played again and he searches here and there but finds nobody. He again listens the tune and this time laughing of a woman also. He turns back and finds image of Sadhna in the lake. She is standing other side of the lake. She sees him and smiles but he does not reciprocate her by smile but shows him the watch to indicate that she has come late there. He signals her to say bye and she laughs on his anger and runs to stop him. She stops him and rests her hands on his shoulders but he removes her hands and goes away to sit under a tree. She also reaches there and sits besides him but he does not want to pay any attention to him and takes out a file role and starts playing with the film. She takes out a cigarette from her purse but he is too busy in showing his sulkiness to her and does not see at her and she smells heavily the cigarette and then he sees at her but shows no interest in cigarette. She tries to insert cigarette in his lips but he clings them heavily but after some moments opens them a little and she keeps the cigarette between his lips. She takes out a lighter and lights it and a tune is played and he sees it with interest and takes it from her and lights it to listen the music. He does it few times and she takes it back to light his cigarette.
He puffs the cigarette and enjoys it and he sees at her with praise and love and she bends her eyes under shyness. She looks up in to his eyes and kisses the lighter and keeps in the pocket of his shirt. Lovers smile and see each other with love. He takes out the lighter and sees it and asks her if it is for him. She smiles and expresses with her eyes, face and smile that yes its for him only. He is happy and he kisses the lighter and keeps back in his pocket.
Dev Anand is enjoying resting in silence while lying near his lover, Saaadhna, but being woman Saadhna realises that its time for her to go back to home but she finds her lover sleeping and she tries to go silently but he is not sleeping in real and lying only with closed eyes and he gets up and what a better way to break the silence of those loving moments than to emote his feelings through this wonderful song
Abhi na jao chod kar
(3) Awara
Raj Kapoor and Nargis are lying in the sand and communicating without the help of spoken words. They make faces, they pinch other, they pull hair of each other, they tease each other and they run after each other. Basically a fun and frolic show of lovers is shwon on the screen but without taking the help of spoken words of any language.
——————————————————————————————–
Genius trio of Raj-Dev-Dilip contributed in a great manner to portray love on the screen without saying a single world. Each member of this trio brought his own individuality on the screen to perform almost similar kind of emotions.
Its said that
There is only one type of love,
but there are a thousands of immitations
and as persons are changed in every immitation so their ways of immitating are also changed.
Daulate Ishq mayassar har ek dil ko nahin
Chunee gayee hai ye daulat kisee kisee ke liye

RK: kya form mein ho!! Mazra kya hai?
Present generation’s lovers ( on/off screen) talk too much. Reducing Sound Pollution is no less PIOUS job than making world GREEN.
Wow,RK. Bade elaborate aur apt descriptions hai!
Yeh sab aaj kal kyun nahin hota? Niether in movies, nor in real life.
Rk saab,
Bahut khoob! Great List.. to me one of the finest love song is “Kashti ka khamosh safar hai, shaam bhi hai tanhaai bhi, door kinare par bajati hai laharon ki shehnai bhi… aaj mujhe kuchh kehna hai” by Kishore Kumar and Sudha Malhota from Girlfriend..
your “Present Generation (on/off screen)” remark reminds me a nazm of gulzar saab
main bhI us hall mein baiThaa thaa
jahaan parde par ik film ke kiradaar
zindaa jaaved nazar aate the
unakI har bAt baDI, soch baDI, karm baDe
unakaa har ek amal
ek tasleem thI, sab dekhane waalon ke liye
main adAkAr thaa usame
tum adaakaaraa thI.n
apane mehboob kaa jab haath pakaD kar tumane
zindagI ek nazar mein bhar ke
usake sIne par bas ek aansU se likh kar de dI thI
kitane sachche the wo kiradaar
jo parade par the
kitane farzI the wo do, hall mein baiThe saaye
@Subrat,
Sorry I was in hurry and did not get what you wanted to ask, (still dont understand the real points raised by you in your question) so replied a general thing which i should have mentioned somewhere in the post.
So coming back to original point- What form? Frequency? or matter in this post? If I get clarity between two then I can tell you about Mazra, if there is any.
@Arun,
revolution starts from self at own home. Try it and bring that status:)
Aapo Deepo bhava!
@Pavan,
That duet is always in the few very good songs in the list of love duets.
Thanks for sharing Gulzar Saab’s poem.
Rk: My point was “yeh aashiqana mizaaz ki wazah kya hai”?
@Subrat(6),
When its not there ? Its always there.
“Take love away from life and you take away its pleasure”
and Robert Burns, one of the poet in my list, has written
O’ MY Luve’s like a red, red rose,
That’s newly sprung in June.
O, my Luve’s like the melodie,
That’s sweetly play’d in tune.
