love story of a strange country
It’s a short story of Dhirendra Asthana which inspired me to write this post..The story called “vichitra desh ki prem katha” (love story of a strange country). It’s a tale of a man whose love life is devastated by a political drama unfolds all of a sudden at the center. The backdrop used in this story is the tenure of “a poster woman.”. The protogoanist of Dhirendra Asthana’s story is KC who loves a muslim girl .He got threats and he has to leave the place..he moves to his Uncle’s place at Delhi and fortunately got into a nice job…His Uncle has some illegal business and could not match the wavelength of KC.So Kc leave his Uncle’s residence and started to reside separately…One day some police men came to him and arrests him over the charge of being traitor of the country..He has a charge of reading books of revolutionaries…This was the emergency era…as a result he could not went back to marry his girlfriend…then years after he again falls in love with a Punjabi girl ….He again dreams of a happy life ..everything was going fine till the day that “poster woman” was shot…the next day a riot broke down and started a masscare which did not even spared his girlfriend….The title justified at the end that when KC asks himself….how can a country be so strange….why these people wer overreacting……This story reminds me of 1942 a love story 1947 earth, and of course Hazaaro Khwahishe.. immediately…
Though 1942 is a story set during the freedom struggle but it affected the inherent love story…In some way I think 1947 earth has same story..an incident happens which affects the lovebirds…The other movies which I could recall were
Bombay,Roza ,Dil se,Pukar, maachis etc……they all have backdrops but some has aftermaths or some doesn’t had necessarily a political backdrop….very few love stories were made set during some political dramas which became a significant part of history…But a lot has remained untouched….like we don’t have any story set on the Bengal partition of 1905….the era is yet to b rediscover…we don’t have any love story which might have happened after the entry of east India company…no story is based on rise of dalits aka Mayawati’s empire…. n no movie is based on the backdrop of rising hindutva…. …or Lots of news happened about the inclusion of the state Hyderabad into the territory of India but we don’t know what impact this might have created on the people of Hyderabad…how many stories might remain untold with the nizam’s…..In the same way Lucknow Nawab’s have lost their dynasty but we don’t have any film based on that exceptI “Shatranj ke khiladi …..In recent years…we have “hazaaro Khwahishe..” which provide some spotlight and is an extraordinary attempt….It’s strange that we have lots of them in our literature but not in our films…may be coz it’s a strange country which don’t have enough guts to tell those stories ..

I’m sure we’ll see more of such stories. Stories that are based in undiscovered periods of Indian history. Of course, that period of time will not dictate the crux of the story. It’ll have to be the conflicts between the characters. Most of the movies you mentioned have conflicts which can occur at any point in history. You could shift the conflict of one story to a period of another story, and the crux would remain the same …
pratik..at least got a comment n thanx for that….I agree with u… but the feel of the era should come through the story otherwise it would be like just any other story…..for example when we deal with the story set up at hyderabad’s nizam era which may not necessarily create a conflict..but how can u isolate the characters with thier society….i m sure that the politics prevailed at the era must have disrupted many lives…many characters and important stories….it’s all depends on how could we dig those stories….
Well said Deepankar. And, here I feel sorry for Indian movie industry, especially Hindi movie industry. Somehow, we tend to wait for something to happen. Somebody to take risk and make a different movie so that others can join the bandwagon and make scores of similar movies resulting in pseudism. After all with glut of movies on alternate sexuality, we are still so conventioal and we are still as patriotic as we were before bhagat singhs, RDBs etc, DCH and run-offs have not made us more cool or anything…now this wave of remaking movies Umaro Jan, Don, Sholey….com’on…we need originality…and originality brings out the kind of situations Deepankar is taliking abt…Some of our earlier movie-makers were but now the lot is diminishing…Thats sad..really..
=d>there are so many stories that have never been told and even if they have been told, they have not been documented. But they have always been there, and our knowledge doesnt impact the situation.
N thats why we need u Dipankar!!! all those untold stories of strange places…
gandhi ne kaha hai..mutthi bhar sankalpwaan log bhi duniya ki dhara mod sakte hai….ye to hum sabko karna hai
roja, hazaaron..,1942… they’re all factually weak, and offer very immature perspectives on the issues involved. hope no one from the world of hindi cinema makes any more such attempts.
