LUCKBYCHANCE is HONESTBYGOD

DISCLAIMER – this is not a meta physical quantum analytical review of the film. It by no means wants to say how the director has made a socio-political or socio-economic comment in this film thru her characters. Nor does it say anything about the film…nor does it make any sense.

I went for an audition last week. Yeh! audition for a role. By no means did I want it. Just for the heck of it. My friend was involved in the casting and I needed a let out. Goofed around and generally fulfilled my cheap thrills without a worry for the film nor me. But now I wish the film great luck and the deserving actors who should be auditioning to have a great audition and win the part.

A friend called me today, an actress and a good one at that. She was going for an audition and wanted to know if I knew anyone in the crew. She threw a few names I did not know any. Whished her great luck and reassured a nervous soul that she is a superb actress and that she will floor ‘em all. Donno what happened to her audition. I know for sure it meant a lot to her. Wish her great luck.

A writer friend had call this evening. He is a very senior writer and I am not even one. His cousin is an actor. He has done a few films he said. He wanted me to meet his cousin and talk to him and see what can happen. Talk to me? Who am I? What help possibly can I offer? I had no clue. None the less will definitely meet him and see of whatever little help I can be. Wish this boy all the luck he needs to make it.

That scene where Vikram enters the rather dimly lit blue splashed walled rather edgily done room my heart went out to all those people who were there as junior artists in the scene and the ones we keep bumping into each day. Be it the talented ones or the ones here we say or very categorically assume “are wasting their time?” But then who knows who is kidding who?

Was always critical of any Excel Entertainment film. Color coordinated dustbins and toilets I used to say. Sab blue blue hai re…..deewar, chaddar, photo frame, kangi, rumal, couch….aur kuch nahi hai…Japanese styled wooden interiors, waterfalls and some expensive hair styling….that was Excel Films for me. I take them all back….gulp!!!!

LUCKBY CHANCE is HONESTBYGOD

Am not giving any “on the whole” judgments or “watch out for that scene/moment” and spoil your experience.

Zoya Akhtar has just raised the bar for her famous trendsetting sibling as far making a film is concerned……but then Farhan Akhtar has kind of established equilibrium with an….

“yaar tu bhaut zyada underplay karta hai…..commercial cinema mein projection chahiye.”

Underplayed to the hilt…..a knockout of a performance both by the actor and director. Bravoreeeee Akhtars!!!!!!

After a long time. Maybe after Black Friday here comes a film where each and every character has something to say. Hrithik is splendid. One of his best acts. I can watch the film again for his 10 odd minutes alone. I am a convert. I am a fan, was never before till this film happened. Take a bow….BRAVOREEEE!!!!!

It really sounds stupid to just take names and add a few superlatives in the end to say how impressed I am. If what I started with and the 3 incidents I narrated made any sense. Go watch!!!! And then we can talk about this film at length. Maybe in your own blogs….maybe as comments….

Yeh and can’t just publish this without mentioning this KONKONA IS THE BEST ACTOR WE HAVE IN THIS COUNTRY. She is my gushfest. Drool Drool
Drool Drool Drool !!!!!!

Sorry Ankit forgot to mention AK. “Murder” kar de mera :)

Actually why only AK. Rishi Kapoor(someone give him more roles and more recognition. Spectacular), Dimple.K(her phone conversations and checking out Farhan and the final “Chimti”….she is awesome and yes still very very alive:)), Sanjay Kapoor(actually pulled it off), Saurabh Shukla, Aamir, SRK, Ranbir, Vivek Om, Akshay Khanna(I loved what he did – sorry can’t do it…..awesome), Ishita, Ankur….everyone shown in one very very refreshing opening credits sequence.

I dont think it’s fair to analyse a film which was seen on a thursday when most of the junta dont have an opportunity to see it….let it come after many have had a chance to see it…why influence anyone on my perspective of the film….all that I can say in plain black and white is I loved it. now that it’s out all can fill in the grey…

Against my religion, about LBC, here’s what I think:

A film that wishes to deconstruct how a film is not necessarily aiming to be cult.

    On Farhan :
I have always held my own, not wanting to see Farhan Actor, only Farhan Director, but in a scene where he has an emotional outburst, I dropped my guard and will hike up Pali Hill to give him a hug.

    On Koko :
Konkona is my fave gal. She is simply flawless.

Yes but do we realise that most of us talking here are people who have a background in the craft of film making? Either we are in the industry or are film students. As a recently-ex-film student and fresher in the industry, I loved LBC. But I wonder how will a lay audience react to it, the jokes, the sarcasms, the humour, which is very insider.
Great article Vasan Bala, and yes, AK took the cake away with his frustrated script writer do!

@Scribbler, you said it there what I was thinking. I mean after the movie I went to the loo and there were two guys (teens probably) who had come out from the same movie. One guy says “too-lengthy” and the one adds, “yea, and what a stupid ending?” I was like WHAT? I found the ending perfect. The sarcasms, jokes I got it being a lay person. But, those kids found the movie boring. So, I guess more than how lay audience will react; it is about ‘will only a particular age group will like it’? Thats to be seen. Wut Say?

we and hollywood studios will always be plauged by this “lenghty….2nd half dips….end ok hai….first half ka pehla 15 min was superb…..34mins 25sec mein the film dips but picks up at 44mins 32 secs….”

Woddy Allen in an interview said he rather not take such shit from Hollywood hence moved to Europe. The shit here being the dips and picks and the precise time-codes as to where they happen.

OLLO was a victim of this but forget all this when we watch movies with subtitles and are WOWed.

Indian cinema is changing for the good….lets applaud gutsy efforts and nit-pick a little less and create awareness as to why films like LBC and OLLO are good and why they need to be hailed.

An awareness to be created more for the lay person than a burning ambition to win a noble prize for the super critical metaphysical analysis of a film.

I know on a site like PFC it’s like talking about a Girl Child’s rights at NCPA. Where the learned are out there to wow each other out.

Anyways any place is a good place where there is a scope for debate. PFC is hopefully one such place as of now….there should be many more….

The background song at the time of Farhan’s audition, is one of the best picturized songs in recent times. Farhans eyes were singing ! Unfortunately it was the only song that I liked in the movie. The circus song was perfect in the sense, it was “so loud” that , to me , it sounded as if I am watching a live shoot.

I dont know whether everyone giving reviews to this movie are from any acting background. But the movie sucks – big time. There was no story, no coherence in the build up, there was no relevance of some of the characters, very predictable, keeps dragging. I would term it as a documentry on Hindi film industry, only relief were HR, RK, DK. FA really doest have more than 3-4 emotions in his skill set. Same kind of faces in most of the scenes – Bland. Konkana was completely wasted by ZA. The promos tried to sell the movie by showing Hrithik, Rishi K thats the only reason it got decent opening. On sunday – half the theatre was empty. Sad but FA is best at Direction, we want to see DCH part 2.
