Main Aurr Mrs Khanna – A Movie that’s as confusing as it can be
Sethumadhavan | Review | October 16, 2009 at 3:07 pm
Disclaimer – Spoiler Alert
A tale of marital discord with the lead actors being the ever popular Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Shot in impressive locations abroad & with nearly half the movie based in an airport and added to this is an array of well known names doing cameos. All this automatically makes Main Aurr Mrs Khanna (referred to as MAMK from hereon) a great Diwali release, one that can be an ideal outing with family or friends right? No my friends this one is again an embarrassment to the filmography of Salman Khan.
The plot ( if I can call it one ) is all about Samir Khanna ( Salman ) and Raina ( Kareena ) whose marriage is facing rough weather as Samir’s career seems to have hit a crisis. And making things difficult for them all the more is Samir who announces one day that they would follow his friend’s (Dino Morea) advice and shift to Singapore from Australia. Raina gets to know at the airport that Samir doesn’t want her to accompany him and instead wants her to go to Delhi.
But Raina prefers to stay back in Melbourne and takes up a job at the airport. There she comes across Akash (Sohail Khan) who works at the airport café and falls for her almost instantly. Her work permit is about to expire and Raina has to unwillingly apply to get married to Akash so that she can continue to remain in Australia. Just when Akash starts thinking of proposing to Raina enters Samir who returns after getting himself well placed in Singapore. He is now eager to take her back with him. What happens next is not so difficult to guess.
Prem Soni the writer and director, has got it thoroughly wrong. You wonder at times whether it’s an attempt to have a serious take on marital discord or a light hearted entertainer. There are so many situations which make you laugh (in agony) and cringe by looking at the situations conjured up by Prem Soni. Throughout the film there appears to be zero chemistry between Salman and Kareena and in fact Salman hardly has adequate presence in the film. In the scenes that he is present, Salman looks as interested as the furniture in the airport café. Kareena is strictly average over here. Sohail does what is expected.
Yash Tonk, Mehek Chahal, Nauheed Cyrusi, Bappi Da (yes of course Bappi Lahiri indeed) all have supporting characters (nothing special though) but are counted as cameos
. Music by Sajid- Wajid is pretty average with the best track (Don’t Say Alvida) coming in pretty early into the movie. The Preity Zinta cameo including the song is a big let down. All said and done it looks like quite a few people have been either taken for a ride or have done the film without even caring to bother about the story (or the lack of it). After a string of flops Salman had bounced back with Wanted, but MAMK certainly derails him a bit.
It’s a pity that Prem Soni couldn’t come up with something much more impressive than this. With a star cast like this and with an enterprising banner supporting his venture its surprising how he let go of a wonderful opportunity. And it’s also a surprise as to how UTV had even wanted to support such a venture. A potential Diwali dhamaka that’s ended up as nothing but wet crackers. Inspite of the running time being well within 2 hours if you are still shifting uncomfortably in your seat or keep looking at your watch you know how boring the movie could be. MAMK gives you enough scope for it.

Sethumadhavan,
You are the personification of the PFC GIGO contributor.
1)You remember who Salman Khan’s First GF was or was not.(Somi Ali?)
2) Practically everyday, you log in and keep passing retarded conformist comments that never have anything incisive or thought provoking to add to any PFC Post.
3) Your English barely passes muster.Your Tagline should be-’A Film that’s as Confusing as can be.’
4)You don’t know what a Spoiler Alert is.A Spoiler Alert is NOT an overview of a film about marital discord.
It may be the give-away of a murder plot or a suspense drama.
Who says the audience doesn’t deserve what it gets? Films like Mr and Mrs Khanna are just what the doctor ordered for passionate souls like you.
Manoj- thanks for taking the time out to read this review.
I pity you for having to spoil your diwali by making this scathing attack against me.I have written nothing acerbic against Salman or anybody else in this review.This is what I felt after watching the film & I’ve been honest about it.If you have anything better to write about the movie do let me know.Have a good day & a very happy diwali.
y bother yaar sethu…
A good review! Your observations are correct. This is another ‘Nothing’ film for Salman Khan’. He has many such made only to support a newcomer or a friend. This film is complete waste of resources. A David Dhawan style comedy on the same premise ( Another man falling for the wife while the husband is away. Wife getting interested in the man. Husband comes back and then the tussle between the two.) could have been a much better watch.
Why so much air man ??
believe the author has generously dealt with a pathetic movie…don’t bother what others say..keep up the good work you have been doing all these days..we are all with you sethu sir
@ Manoj bhai. fully agree with you. BTW where did you learn to write such impeccable english? WREN and MARTIN ki najaayaz aulad.
Sorry guys I just could’nt resist it.
Sethu dont let morons like Manoj affect you in any possible way. Looking forward to your next post.
Sethu,
Don’t just dismiss what Manoj has to say. I really want to see the passion that lurks beneath your decision to write here. Grammatical inconsistencies are too trivial a consideration, but..this is what I think it should be…. when u write above cinema, it should reflect your personal vision of the medium or life as a whole. The only time I see you getting all worked up, is when u get to react to a piece about “film marketing”. And film marketing actually seems to be your area of interest and not films as a form of art.
P.S. You can give me a thumbs down rating for this comment, but to serve yourself and this site better, you ought to be taking a far more proactive stance.
@ Sreehari
Now why would I give you a thumbs down, you’ve expressed your opinion in a honest way, so I have no issues with it.Regarding my passion to write this post , well let me say that I stayed awake till 4 A.M after the movie & wrote this because I was disturbed.I was shocked at the way talent & money could be wasted on something like this.The last Hindi movie review I wrote on PFC was probably Kaminey & that was 2 months ago.
So I only review movies now if I feel either strongly about it ( positive or negative ).There are better ways of expressing one’s displeasure with a post & not the way Manoj has done it ( lemme not add anything more on it).As for my interest in movie marketing, yes you are right its something that interests me a lot.But marketing in movies has to be a subset of movies right?So I obviously have passion for movies.
I guess you & me have our own different ways of looking at it.will still try & see if I can write better.All said & done I admire the way you portray people and emotions in your writings.
@Sree Hari,
Thanks for raising that point. Its a perfect example of how to raise a concern or to put across your point of dispute.
Unlike certain other persons who get personal and all worked up.
On a general note, its good to raise your point about the content of the articles but I will let PFC editiors decide on that.
@Sethu Yaara,
I was expecting the movie to be sad. You validated it for me.
Again, don’t let these things stop you from writing what you want. Its important that you write, only that would make it better and better.
Vishesh yaara- yes I agree its best that I carry on & keep writing and of course try to write better.
And yes stay away from MAMK
@ Sethu
I like the review but I think you were too kind to the movie and people associated with it. If I would have been your position I would have trashed the movie like nothing. I think it is one of the most pathetic films I have ever seen.
P.S. Please bare with my english Manoj.
@Manoj … What the F ?
Off late i have come across many such comments on PFC. I hope things don’t deteriorate further and …
we all should realize that the discussions and conversations don’t need to be personal.
@Sethu .. keep up the good work. I am used to your comments and posts since long .. and appreciate ur presence on PFC.
PS,DG,Durga-
Thanks for all the confidence bestowed.
Valay- yes probably I was a bit lenient
@ manoj…. you seem like quite a moron…
its people like sethu who have the passion to keep reading and writing about films without being judgemental….and to keep sites such as PFC going. We should be happy that atleast he logs in and comments – which in turn means that he reads what other write… and also shows his passion to understand what others feel about movies….If you have an opinion about films and about his content then you are more than welcome to write about it… but why prove yourelf to be a fool by making such inane and senseless comments….
BTW, Salman’s first girlfriend was not Somi Ali …. it was Sangeeta Bijlani..Somi ali came after her ;-)… I can also tell you his second or third girlfriend’s names if you want….
Hey,
Which were Salman’s GFs …
In an Interview with CNBC he said he was in his 5th or 6th Relationship….
Also in Dus Ka DUm he keeps referring to 5-6 GFs
If we look at it we have
Shaheen
Sangeeta Bijlani
Somi Ali
Aishwarya Rai
Katrina Kaif…

Who is the 6th one….
Sethu..bhai keep writing…u need not to bother about what people like Manoj says… we the people on pfc are passionate for cinema and we are not interested in noticing whether a person is phd in english from harward or oxford… humein filmi dewaane chahiye…angrezi ke budhijeevi nahi…
Good post Sethu sir. It was helpul for me as I watched All The Best instead of MAMK. Grammar doesn’t matter as long as you are able to convey your ideas. Keep writing.
@ jahan … watch MAMK as well yaar… just for a few subtle moments, which are not all that great, but it can keep coming back in your mind of how this scene could’ve been better… it will be more or less a story that you will kind of like but would yearn if the treatment was right… lekin Cinema hall mei 2+ hours on this can be painful… maybe on someday when you are over charged up with boss/teacher/customer giving you high BPs… that day watch this to get back to the bored life
… (confused man, as much as I think its watchable I am unable to ask anybody to sit in a cinema hall for 2 hours and watch this movie)
Thanks PS bhai. Will try to watch this also.
Saurabh,Sophocles,Akash-
Thanks a lot.Will try to keep writing lot more stuff and try to be even better in terms of writing.
Jahan- glad you took the right decision after reading this post
@MANOJ,
In this age of sms, grammar is for dinosaurs.What has MAMK review got to with Salman’s gf.
Why you to be so personal,sethu was passionate, that is why he took the pain to write the review at first place.
@Sethu,
Keep up the good work,and i am really glad that i did not waste my time and money on this.
This is a forum for serious discussion….not a tabloid….we don’t discuss the personal lives of film stars.
As Vineet has mentioned this is not a forum where we discuss anything of this sort.This post is a review of MAMK & nowhere have I written this to generate any discussion on the private/personal lives of any of the people concerned with the movie.Please refrain from posting such comments.
@Vineet
I brought that Topic out because there was a reference to that in the First Comment.Keep your opinions to yourself as to what PFC is..Reviewing movies is not serious discussion by any yardstick.
& @Sethumadhavan
Thalaiva stop the Holier than thou attitude. I was curious about this topic because elsewhere yours truly had commented on the same.
http://passionforcinema.com/tribute-to-non-actors/#comment-391954
“Ratnakar- correction, she was Sallu’s 2nd GF- 1st being Sangeeta Bijlani.Anyways Somy Ali is in the U.S- apparently runs a clothing line and a non profit organisation.
And yes Rajkumar Santoshi was in love with Meenakshi and even proposed to her.It was a big gossip item those days.Though I was a kid then, such news would always find its way through to all Santoshi saab and Mamta Kulkarni actually had a spat while filming China Gate and thats why he brought in Urmila for Chamma Chamma.”
One set of Rules for you and one for others is it…
Well it depends on what you consider serious, good reviews are sometimes more interesting than the movies they are meant for.
As for keeping my views to myself, I will not. This is a democratic forum and I will speak my mind when I please. What you can do instead of telling me to shut up is to tell me why you are right to talk about the personal life of an actor.
Actually just saying the first line :”I brought that Topic out because there was a reference to that in the First Comment” would have been fine, and I would have said that “Ok I got it”.
But I guess it’s much easier to vent out one’s ego instead of engaging in a meaningful discussion.
Raj- thanks for bringing up that topic.
But how I wish you had even realised what & where all that was being discussed.Much as we keep saying PFC is all about being a serious forum about cinema,even we do tend to let ourselves relax once in a while in certain posts & that one ( tribute to non actors ) is one such post and thats why it had some 400 + comments.Show me any other serious post where myself and anybody else who has commented here has discussed anything thats of this nature & I’ll accept your point.
Of course its not one set of rules for myself & one set for the others.In case I ever write a fun post, you are always welcome to have a fun discussion over there.
The review was decent and its honest. Let me reflect some points on other aspects. (No one sud take this on a personal level)
I have been a silent reader in PFC since many days.
Overtime, I had seen that this platform became full of ego centric people, who can’t respectably differ with others views. If at all they differed, they took this on a personal level and the follow comments erupted like volcano.
Its no brainer that people here don’t like average commercial flicks……which is good aspect. Does it give us enough reason to thrash and bash all the commercial movies, just to fake people here that we are the only surviving intellectual lot and the savior of intelligent cinema.
If one doesn’t likes SRK or KJ movies, then why at all take the risk to waste money on first chance to return dejected and finish with a violent bad review. Are we carrying a healthy trend? If at all we are so smart to understand intelligent cinema then why not try to make a movie of similar kind or at least of 10 mins to showcase our potential rather than writing another bad review for the same movie already written here?
Audiences differ so every movie has its own audience and market and we need to respect this. Else no SRK, SLK or AK sudnt been considered as super stars today. If one doesn’t like commercial cinema, then lets not bash the movie, just finish this whole issue with a healthy thumbs down for the movie as Sethu has done. (Like Masand always do)
I am sure that in the coming days the dragon which PFC has created will surely try to eat its tail.
Its high time we sud have censorship over the ranting and bashing reviews of average commercial flicks. Lets waste our time on something productive called CINEMA not MOVIES.
@ Priya- I do value your comment & wish to add that we must first of all respect all kinds of cinema.After that it becomes a matter of personal choice as to what one should see & appreciate.I hope all of us can be a bit more tolerant in this respect.
in august 2006, when PFC started… there were 6 articles (including one from yours truly) – each topic was different from the other… the basic premise was that one can write whatever they feel about films at PFC… However, it stuns me when I see comments such as ” Keep your opinions to yourself as to what PFC is”…boss, PFC if what you make it…
@raj: arey bhai…. woh article alag tha…. woh context alag tha…. you picked up another blog and pointed out what was said in it and are trying to corelate the two… it doesnt work that way…. that article was about non-actors (and somly ali finds pride of place in it… for obvious reasons)… this article is about MAMK.. dont force your point….the set of rules is the same as it has always been…. if you are passionate about films write whatever pleases you… if you like it then appreciate it .. if you dont….then say so… but dont tell people they are wrong because they think in a particular way…its their individual choice….
Oh Boy… Am I glad to see you… and bring some sanity in here… Salute to one of the founding fathers of PFC…
Sethu: Keep writing. It is your chocie. If people do not want to read, it is theirs! I’ll keep reading for sure (though I may not comment in all your posts :-) )
@Sophocles
Point accepted.Ab to bata do woh chhati Girlfriend…
@Vineet
May be I was rash. Sorry
@Sethu
Point accepted Thalaiva. I will take due care that I remain in the context of the Post.
No problems….”mohabbat aur jung mein sab jayaz hai”…
