Making a mark, without any noise
The first thing you notice about Nitinsathyaa are his intense eyes; maybe that is what helped him get under the skin of the character he played in ‘Satham Podathey’ (Don’t make any noise). He shone as the impotent sportsman, even though the role was not too well written. Even though his role in ‘Chennai-28’ endeared him to the masses, but it was the role of the anti-hero in ‘Satham Podathey’ that won him loads of critical acclaim and also got him a lot of offers.
“I am on cloud nine after ‘Satham Podathey.’ When I was acting in ‘Chennai-28,’ the responsibility was not much. But now with different roles and films, I feel a lot of responsibility has been thrust on me as the audience expectations are high. But at the same time, my confidence levels are also high after receiving so much of praise for my work in ‘Satham Podathey’,” says Nitinsathyaa.
Though ‘Satham Podathey’ was the first film he started work on, ‘Chennai-28’ was the first to hit the screens. “I met director Vasanth when he was doing screen tests the role of the main lead for K. Balachander’s ‘Poi.’ Even though I did not land a role in that movie, Vasanth, who liked the screen test, cast me in the role of the anti-hero in ‘Satham Podathey’.”
Coming from a non-filmi background, he was attracted to movies even while studying at the Gill Adarsh School in Chennai. But it was while doing his MBA (Marketing and Human Resources) in London, that he decided that he wanted to make acting his career. “I was watching a Tamil movie — I think it was Vijay’s ‘Badri’ — in a London theatre, and was zapped at the audience reactions. That is when I decided to become an actor after returning to India.”
So after returning to India, he did the rounds of production houses and even landed a few small roles. He did the role of a patient in the Kamal Haasan starrer ‘Vasoolraja MBBS’ (he can be seen in the song ‘Alwarpet aaluda’) and of one of Ajit’s friends in ‘Ji.’
He touched base with old friends S.P.B. Charan and Venkat Prabhu, who were then working on ‘Mazhai’ that had Jeyam Ravi and Shriya Saran in the lead roles. But the casting for the movie was complete, and he was unable to land any role. But they promised him a role in their next venture, and ‘Chennai-28’ happened.
“Lot of people asked me why I was getting into movies after finishing my MBA. But my education helped me a lot while handling the production for ‘Chennai-28.’ I was also involved in the planning and strategy and marketing,” he says.
His next release will be ‘Thozha,’ which has three other actors from ‘Chennai-28’ — Premji Amaren, Ajay and Vijay Vasanth. “Though the four of us are there in ‘Thozha,’ it is diametrically different from ‘Chennai-28.’ It is a family entertainer, and has all the usual elements — comedy, action, drama, etc.” The movie is being directed by debutant Sundereswaran.
Nitinsathyaa is also doing director Jaganjee’s next ‘Raman Thediya Seethai.’ In this movie, he will attempt comedy and will be sharing space with director Cheran and Pasupathi. Jaganjee had earlier directed ‘Pudhiya Geetham’ and the much-acclaimed ‘Kodambakkam.’
He is also committed to working in the debut effort of Manikandan, an associate of director Gautam Menon. “I am looking forward to starting work on this movie as it has a very sexy script. I am sure it will be a very racy film.”
“I have been flooded with offers but I am being very selective about the roles I take up. I am more worried about quality, and not quantity. I do not want to get into an image trap; I want to do a variety of roles. I would like to do a full-fledged action role too, but I am waiting for the right script,” he says.

@Dido… Venky is a seasoned writer for PFC and he has done some really exclusive interviews for us. Not all his posts go into the exclusive section but when he provides insights into unchartered territories of Indian Cinema, he does tag it exclusive.
One merit may be that the topic he touched upon has not been touched by anyone else, hence the exclusive. More on his work, here:
