MAMI FILM FESTIVAL 2008

Its time of the year for the International Film Festival of Mumbai popularly known as Mumbai Academy of Moving Images (MAMI) Fest. The opening ceremony will be held on the eve of 6th March, whose entry is by invitation only. The movie screenings will start from 7th of March. The people who want to register can pay 500rs for the pass and should not forget to bring a passport size photograph. The students and people belonging to cinema fraternity can get the passes for 300rs (guess will have to produce the membership of various associations.)
The best place to see the films is at Imax Wadala. With 4 screens to choose from at a time and best movies playing at this venue. The only problem is the location, which is least accessible by train, bus and even auto. But once you are there its a good outing. You are cut off from the outside world, away from the noisy and crowded city enviornment.
The other venues are Metro Adlabs (2 screens) and Cinemax, Andheri (1 screen).

Hope to see you guys at the film fest. Quite a few PFCites would be attending.
Lets use this blog for suggesting, which films are good to watch, planning to meet etc.
Still have to register myself :)Planning to do it early morning on 7th itself. Hopefully should get the pass (should not be a problem, made passes pretty late last year).
Don’t miss the fest check out the films!!

I am keenly looking forward to :-

Opening Film : KATYN ,
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,

The Pool

Fuck man. Carlos Saura and Emir Kusturica retrospective !!!!!

Unbelievable line up of films. Wish I was there. :((

  2. Manjeet Singh on March 5th, 2008 12:55 pm

Mithun, any strong recommendations for a must watch?

  3. Mithun Gangopadhyay on March 5th, 2008 1:56 pm

    caramel
    the red desert
    the edge of heaven
when father was away on business
    arizona dream
    Fados
    Chacun con cinema
    tsotsi
    goodbye bafana
    the dark night
    carmen
    el septimo dia
    relatives
    pajarico
    iberia

A word of caution though. Saura is very much an acquired taste so don’t blame me if you don’t like him. Haven’t even heard of so many in the list so this is just what I have seen and would love to see.

Do not miss Arizona Dream though.

  4. Mainak on March 5th, 2008 3:04 pm

    Oh man….
    thats a orgasmic list…

    Let me give my favs…

The Edge of Heaven - Dir. : Fateh Akin
Akin had made the mindblowing HEAD-ON.

    Watch all of Wajda’s & Kusturica’s films….

SECRET SUNSHINE from Korea…. The director of this film used to the the Minister of Culture of S Korea. I missed it during AFI. Its supposed to be great.

Jellyfish & Caramel are getting US releases… so you can watch them later on DVD.

    RED DESERT

Man watch everything that you find is interesting & will not get a wide distribution. Because this is the only chance to see such films…

  5. Saad Nawab on March 5th, 2008 3:20 pm

Damn, I so wanted to be there….am stuck with bloody exams. Why oh why do I miss out watching good cinema with people who are interested in seeing it? Why do I get stuck in repressed Modiland?

  6. Manjeet Singh on March 5th, 2008 9:54 pm

  7. suchita b on March 5th, 2008 10:47 pm

Thanx Manjeet for the detailed list.

Guess we can just go and buy the tickets of the respective films as well without making the passes.

Hope we get the dvds of a few.

  8. Mithun Gangopadhyay on March 5th, 2008 11:07 pm

The best fest I’ve ever been to happened a few years back in Bombay where they showed only Oscar winning foreign films at Chandan in Juhu.

I think I only bunked de Sica and War and Peace.

Oh man what a week that was. We used to smuggle in booze for the last 2 shows. U haven’t experienced until ur smashed outta ur mind and watching Crouching Tiger on the big screen.

There was almost a riot when the organisers said they weren’t gonna show Z but luckily they did show it.

  9. Shailesh Limbachiya. on March 5th, 2008 11:43 pm

OK… manjeet, mithun, mainak, suchita… u enjoy cult classics and i will try to enjoy 10,000 B.C. & Black & White in Ahmedabad.

  10. Hitendra on March 6th, 2008 12:46 am

    Hey Manjeet,

You spoke for me. I just downloaded the schedule and was wondering which films to watch. The suggestions here help somewhat.

Now, the second quest of finding someone to come along to watch ‘these’ movies begins!! :)

    Hitendra

  11. Starfan on March 6th, 2008 5:19 am

I wanna see that Talking Dic film…although my friend said it’s only a short and there is no talking anatomies involved…more “cute” than porn! :((

Anyway may check it out and the set after it, 11.30am on a sunday… i suppose i can get up in time for that, not too early!:-?

  12. cinefan on March 6th, 2008 7:44 am

the package is pretty good, wadala is too far of, so is metro, though imax is fab
cinemax is the best option , cos can meet friends too

    Hello “Passionate” Film friends,

My name is Amyn Kaderali, I’m the director of “KISSING COUSINS” which will be showing at MAMI. Unfortunately, I am unable to make the trip to the festival but I hope you all will come out and see it. My stars, Samrat Chakrabarti and Rebecca Hazlewood, will be in attendance. You can see a trailer at http://www.kissingcousinsmovie.com
It’s our first screening in India and I would love to know what you think of the film!
    Thanks,
    Amyn Kaderali

    Hi Guys,
We are having master classes with indian&international directors everyday at IMAX at 9.45. The schedule for the same is given below and please register on iffmmasterclass@gmail.com

    Saturday, 8th March

  17. gaurav on March 7th, 2008 5:59 am

    dear All,

i attended the first day at Adlabs Wadala and it was really an amazing experience.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE attend MASTER CLASS WITH FILMMAKERS.
its 1 hr discussion every morning 9:45 at Wadala. I attended the lecture of Mr. Mimicos today and found him making sense in his each and every word. Tomorrow there is Mr. SRIRAM RAGHAVAN talking on WRITING A FILM SCRIPT. there are more people like Govind Nihlani, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Prof Dragon and many more in the following days. This is a really cool initiative and the best part of the festival (i think).

i also found two links related to this:
    1.http://www.iff-mumbai.org/
    2.http://www.adlabsfilms.com/pressrelease_mamifestival.html

keep watching and enjoying good cinema
    cheers

  18. Manjeet Singh on March 7th, 2008 11:16 am

    today watched:-
    Man of iron
    Reprise

    Relatives.
Coincidentally all the 4 films were more or less verbal. Lot of portions were indoors.
    Enjoyed being there!

    aHa …Reprise!!!!!!!
    kaisa laga manjeet?

    awesome movie!!

  21. gaurav on March 8th, 2008 8:02 am

    :)>-

  22. Manjeet Singh on March 8th, 2008 10:04 am

kapil, one of the purpose of this post was to get the recommendations:) My guess is as good as yours:)

  23. Manjeet Singh on March 8th, 2008 10:08 am

Dpac: Reprise was fun…Guess the story telling was the key rather than the script itself…Loved the style of the director to take the audience on a trip..for eg: the shot when the protagonist is riding the bike with eyes closed, doing the countdown…as a viewer u r shit scared..when it is zero…the shot is cut..you r still wondering what happened..cut to the next shot where the same actor appears..such a relief!

  24. Manjeet Singh on March 8th, 2008 10:12 am

    Today watched:-
The eight day of the week,
The opera (shown instead of Kusturica’s film, the crowd was mad:) )
    hunting Flies
    4 Months, 3 weeks and 2 days.

  25. Manjeet Singh on March 8th, 2008 10:18 am

it seems the organizers have put all the good films on Sunday. Now I have to choose between Caramel, Fados and Ping Pong for the 11:00 am show..wanted to see all of them :( which one to choose, help friends! Same trouble later on for the 2:30 pm show.
Why do they have to put all the good ones at once. It is such a loss.Hope they get it right next year.. Last year too missed a few good films coz of that

  26. Anurag Kashyap on March 8th, 2008 10:56 am
