Mere Angne mein – Is She a Male ?
Several male comedy actors have done this that they entered in to the get up of a female. Mahmood did it. Johny Walker did this but perhaps Biswajeet was the first leading man in Hindi film Industry who became a woman for a song ”Kajra mohabbat wala” (Shamshad Beghum singing for him). Rishi Kapoor and Paintal improvised this art in Rafuchakkar. These acts have been creating loud laugh in audience. Even Amjad Khan did this.
And then came Lawaris of Prakash Mehra and here Amitabh Bachchan – “The angry young man” was dancing on the song “ Mere angne mein “. Several liked it and several criticised it heavily. Several film actors used this example to put sarcasm on Amitabh Bachchan. Even when he contested election for MP seat from Allahabad in 1985 then his opponent, veteran politician Late HN Bahuguna had hired groups of Eunuchs/transvestites and these people used to sing and dance in whole constituency to ridicule Amitabh. Though Amitabh won with large amount of votes and this massive defeat of Bahuguna subsequently finished his political career.
Shatrughan Sinha says that AB has been most distinguished and best among our generation and he delivered his best except this song “Mere Angne mein” where he departs from his usual dignity. Abhishek Bachchan and perhaps Jaya Bachchan also did not like his dancing on this song but Amitabh takes different line. He says,” Being an actor my role is to accept the challenge, my director has kept before me and its exciting to face different challenges and Mere angne mein was such a challenge “. Its digestible enough when an actor can play role of a dacoit, rapist, person suffering from leprosy then why he cant play a role of woman if script demands or situations in story demands?
It was hilarious to see Ranjit dancing in female dress in Sharabi when AB makes him drunk and compels him to dance on stage.
Shobha De – The columnist does not like male actors having get up of females. She crticises Aamir( Bazi), Shahrukh (Duplicate), Salman (Janeman) but he criticises most Amitabh who started this by doing Mere Angne mein.
Has she seen Chachi 420? Or original Mrs Doubtfire? Was it bad? Kamal and Robbin Williams were simply great in their female incarnation.
Well such critics take care of female actors playing roles of males in so many films? Late Geeta Bali played role of a male soldier in Anand Math, Saadhana in Rajkumar, Sri Devi in Khuda Gawah, Madhuri in Hum Apke hain Kaun and several others might have played in several films. As actors they are free to play any characters which appeal the actor residing inside them and if they can play it.
Lata Mangeshkar once famously said that she would like to sing for Dilip Kumar but he would not play a female character.
Amitabh certainly gave required comedy touches to the song Mere Angne mein. He is not giving illusion that He is She but he only takes up the suitable female dresses to dance on the song. It’s a fun song and funny performance by AB. Song may not be for kids but AB’s presentation has made it a feast for kids to watch it so why to bring adult definitions to the purpose with which song was conceptualized.

Good one RK…Though i do not mind male characters playing a female part..but, i think Amitabh couldnt carry it off well. He was very “rigid” in mere angane mein… Makeup was aweful…etc etc etc

OM: Prakash Mehra and AB both did not make a woman out of AB but song demanded him dressing like characters described in the song and they did like we see in puppetery. Perhaps purpose was different, it was a comedy song and I see them fulfilling the purpose. if PM and AB were desiring to portray AB as woman then they were going to wax his chest as SRK; salman, Aamir and younger lot has been doing in the film. In the song AB has portrayed different characters, a male singer, a fat woman, a tall woman, a short woman etc. Atleast I have been getting this interpretation of this song since childhood.:)
Guys: its sachin’s pic. atleast face is belonging to Sachin. Like you guys I also get it in mail with description that its taken during a fancy dress show in college. In my knowledge Sachin never attended a college. He was in class 10th when he joined Indian Cricket team in 1990 and I am not sure if he did 12th grade later. or may be he did it private but certainly he never attended a college. and in School in class 10th he was not looking like this. I believe pic is morphed with face of sachin pasted on body of a woman.:)
But the background and curtain etc are giving it a look of fancy dress show also! Confusing!
