Mere Paas Maa hai…

We’re outside the mixing room at Empire Studio.

The final mix of Vaastu Shastra is on.

“Are you sure you want your name on the credits to go as Sourabh Usha Narang”, he asks.

“Absolutely”, i reply instantaneously.

“Usha is your mother’s name, right?”

” Yes “, i reply.

There is a moments silence.

I take a long drag on my stamina stick; Ram Gopal Varma takes an even longer pause.

” You are aware that many people out there will say that you’re aping a certain Sanjay Leela Bhansali”, he says finally.

A smile flickers across my face… RGV notices.

“What?” he wonders.

“Do you want a straight answer or a filmi one?” i ask.

“Both”, RGV says, without batting an eyelid.

” To answer you directly- i don’t care what anyone thinks. As far as i’m concerned my role model is my mother. Which is why I always keep her close to me… in the middle of my name!”

‘And the filmi one?’, he queries.

My reply is prompt: ‘Mere pass maa hai!”

Thank you Oz for inviting me to write a diary for PFC… and to Surya and Karthik who helped in the same…i guess this back story illustrates to you’ll why i wanted to call my diary what it is…

Not only does the phrase have an almost cult like significance in Hindi film history… but it has a beautiful personal resonance for me as well.

A huge hello to everyone of the PFC family… feels great to be on board… Cheers!

Sourabh

= A very warm welcome director of Vaastu Shastra… Sourabh… Great landing on PFC… I sure us cine fanatics would like to hear more, discuss more and exchange more vibrant ideas with every new post of yours. Love the title by the way.

    For non Hindi readers
Mere Pass Maa hain is a famous dialogue uttered by Shashi Kapoor to Amitabh Bachchan in one the biggest hits “Deewar” in Hindi cinema… in Hinglish it means “I have my mother”

Hey Striker boy - Comeon yaar, you don have to thank me dude… its all in the family now. Three cheers to Sourabh… He is gonna rock. I have worked with him before as his associate, though he probably doesnt find me competent enough to work with him in his films. Knowing that nothing is happening in my career as a director, lets see if he will cast me in his film as an actor.

phoenixnu- quite bizarre u mentioned it, actually toying with the acronym S.U.N for my next film…

ravptor- just curious, u still with that girl?

jahan- thanks for the honesty… yes, haqeeqat is more ‘me’ than VS…

you’re absoulutley right Om… this is addictive!

  21. Vasan on February 20th, 2007 10:46 am

    Hi Saurabh,

Do let us know in you coming posts on the first feature experience and Horror to start with. In some RGV interview to rediff.com I read, RGV said u made a better horror film than Bhoot….He was spooked by Vastu Shastra. Also in the same breath he mentioned that Bhoot was his best film as he had made Bhoot without a script…which he feels is the most challenging job and puts to test the director in him.

  22. SURYA on February 21st, 2007 12:04 pm

Woh sab toh theek hain where is our next post sir???? If you don’t write one soon, Yaad rakhna, mere pass bhi maa hai… actually dadi amma bhi hain… :d

coming soon surya… was hoping to get inspired by your post on THE birthday party at Aurus… to kind of spin me into action… ha.. ;)

  24. illuzon on February 22nd, 2007 1:41 am

Ok sourabh…wanted to tell u somethin. i was shit scared after i saw vaastu shastra. i still am :(

  25. surya on February 22nd, 2007 3:28 am

Sourabh - Am glad with that reply of yours warna maa bohot bhadki hui thi… Birthday party was good. A very classy but low key affair. Nothing worth mentioning except for RGV entering meeting everybody, and his first reaction after seein me is “So mr. sZurya you have come all clean shaven and all for the Birthdy party hmmm?” that was it… afterwards he was obviously surrounded by many. Though Jiah was looking extremely sexy, and the ambience and the music was good. A very well organized event. All thanks to Giggan Shukla and her team from the Aamby Valley Hospitality. Our friend Amit Roy too was present.

  26. surya on February 22nd, 2007 3:57 am

Along with the miif ltd… which was also he part of the event… thanks to Akshay… your team rocks sir…

  27. OM on February 22nd, 2007 9:55 am

Surya, Did you guys play dumb-Charades at the party? ;) LA aajao kabhi we will party here too…If you cannot party without Jiah…A big cut-out of hers can be arranged…:) or better tag her along…

  28. Surendra Hiwarale on February 23rd, 2007 12:11 am

ha ha ha OM… Saale… No we did not play Dumb Charades everybody was too busy drinking, chatting and enjoying. It was fun… LA agli saal i will be there… we can play then… but how will you enact Butch cassedy and the sun dance kid? Amit Roy jacked our opposition party at Munnar. The equation was him, me and abhi and the rest of the unit… It was mind blowing. But next year LA is for sure dude…

  29. Surendra Hiwarale on February 23rd, 2007 2:04 am

lahol vilaa quwat… masha allah yeh kya baat hui bhai? hum aapke post ka bade hi besabri se intezaar kar rahe hain…

You are depriving me and all your fans of your experiences sir… can we have some more insights and your experiences on filmmaking and films per se?

  34. Vikas on March 22nd, 2007 10:17 pm

looking forward to hear from u sourabh..

    Cheers,
    Vikas.

  35. blink on March 29th, 2007 8:30 am

why remake ‘the shining’ again and again. I know that vaastu shastra is a forgotten past but RGV has already made a similar film ‘Deyyam’ in Telugu and it was over hyped and fell flat at the box office..I think RGV has made you a scapegoat….and pls dont fall again…
