Miss Pettigrew and Sleeper Hits
There You go….
Admist all the cacophony of blockbuster movies swashbuckling thrillers etc etc etc, ‘the sleeper hit’ HITS!!!!
Scratching your head over what the #$%^& a sleeper hit is?
The Times of India to the rescue.
In American showbiz, “sleeper hit” is a term used to refer to a film (and sometimes even a book or an album) that gains unexpected success or recognition.
This post aint a ‘tell me why’ session on Sleeper HIts, rather it is about Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day featuring Frances McDormand and Amy Adams and which has an Indian helming it - Bharat Nalluri
IBNLive carries this story
The American box office saw biggies like 10,000 BC and The Bank Job hit screens but what’s really got film-goers and critics interested is a simple small film titled Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day.Directed by Indian-born Bharat Nalluri, this directorial debut has been declared a sleeper hit in the US, leaving behind big budget films like 10,000 BC.
NYTimes has this to say
As it stands, the movie, directed by Bharat Nalluri from a screenplay by David Magee and Simon Beaufoy, is an example of how a little nothing of a story can be inflated into a little something of a movie with perfect casting, dexterous tonal manipulation and an astute eye and ear for detail
After a particularly dour Oscar season, the jolly romantic romp Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day sparkles like a rhinestone in the muck. Set in 1930s London, the story of a dowdy governess (Frances McDonald) who finds adventure and love when she works as a starlet’s (Amy Adams) personal assistant for 24 hours is just the tonic for filmgoers eager for a film that celebrates the bearable lightness of being.
I haven’t had the chance to see it yet, going by the reviews below, cant wait. But amidst all the Naarebaazi about an ‘indian’ directors film being a sleeper hit, the ‘brilliant’ indian media exhibits its easy lazy reporting shtyle saying this is Nalluri’s debut feature. Don’t know, but is it so difficult to dig a bit deeper before publishing a story?
Check out the review for his earlier work Killing Time
Signing off with a quote from the NYTimes review
How light is this movie? So buoyant that even an air raid warning, signaling that this whole world is about to crumble under the blitz, can’t dampen its giddy spirits.
Cheers to Mr. Nalluri!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read the story in TOI and then googled this guy “Nalluri”..surprise - surprise..he has a good body of work and of course the Indian Media had no clue till NYT and others came out with their opinions / reviews / feedback and then wakey - wakey time. Google News must have flashed the headlines on their faces!!
You know, DPac, have the bloody problem is INERTIA!!!!!
DPac..on that note someone in the PFC group should do a research on Indians or NRIs in Hollywood or Indie or UK cinema..I see a lot of Indian origin names in the end credits of many films. Wanted to voice this before too. I think the presence there is ever increasing and some good work being done!
Mithun G is a student there, you are there and Mainak, Traisie and the others. I suppose this can be done!!
Amy Adams is a goddess :d
I dont exactly agree with you DPac . Normally when the Indian media takes an NRI and makes a big hue and cry about how successful they are (for eg: Sunita Williams, Bobby Jindal etc..you get the drift!), we have a section of Indian intellctuals voicing their opinions saying why do we need to hero-worship these NRIs just coz they have some Indian connection and that they dont care and it does not matter to them what the Indian media thinks of them. So its like being between hard place and a rock for the Indian media. I am not exactly defending them, its just that they will be damned if they write and they will be damned if they dont. This is one of the rare occasions that I am being sympathetic with them.
@indraneel,
that wouldn’t be my forte. (as if i have a ‘forte’ )
:)
@srishti,
I dont have an issue with Indian media making a big hue and cry over successful NRIs or others…
i dont think i have said anything which amounts to what you are saying here.
yes sarcasm is in my blood, and it seeps in when ‘the media’ goes hoo haah without proper research
Shrishti, the point isn’t about the Indian media making a big deal of the success of an NRI in the Arts. It’s about the complete lack of research. These guys are essentially distributing news, knowledge, to the general public. It’s their responsibility to research the story and be as accurate as possible about what they are reporting. If they can’t take 2 mins to Google or IMDB or Wikipedia or whatever before writing about someone, then they should be held accountable and be ready for the critism.
While on the topic, anyone else ever get REALLY annoyed when you go to a site like Allbollywood.com or others like it, and its a story about lets say Minissha Lamba but they’ve got a picture of Manisha Koirala? Or its about Akshaye Khanna and the pic is Akshay Kumar. Do they not know the difference? Are they not reading the stories they’re posting??
Yeh bloody ho kya raha hai??
Dpac, isn’t acting your forte?
@Tony
Faaar from it Tony!!
unless of course you include narsistic homourous attempts which i do now and then :-)
dpac and Tony mera naam,
I agree with both of you when you say that they do need to do a lot more research before they publish a story on someone. I guess when they see an Indian sounding name in hollywood they just assume its a debut coz they have never heard of the person before or can’t imagine that they could be or have been successful.
@srishti
“when they see an Indian sounding name in hollywood they just assume its a debut ”
eggaactly my problem…
they dont do their job properly…
all it requires in this case is a google or an imdb search…
