Mithun-Ranjeeta pair to lip-sync love duets again !

According to News Mithun Chakravorty and Ranjeeta, are again going to do a film togather almost after 18 years. They had appeared last time in Gunahon ka Devta(1990) and there also they had come together after a gap of 6 years as first inning of their pairing was finished in 1984 when they did not appear in any film after Bazi and Ghar Ek Mandir.

News says

Director Ashu Trikha who’s busy putting the finishing touches to his next film Zindagi Tere Naam has been flooded with congratulatory SMSs from friends in the film fraternity. Reason: He’s bringing back yesteryear’s hit pair Mithun Chakravorty and Ranjeeta after a gap of over two decades.

For some 4-5 years (late 70s and early 80s), Mithun Ranjeeta Pair remained as popular among audiences as pairs of Dharmendra Hema, Amitabh Jaya, Amitabh Rekha, Rishi Neetu and Sachin Sarika.

She (Ranjeeta) started with a block buster film Laila Majnu and he (Mithun Charavorty) started with a critically acclaimed national award winner film Mrigaya, and later they made an interesting and popular pair on screen.

Mithun made famous pairs with both Ranjeeta and Yogita Bali.

First time Mithun and Ranjeeta were appeared in the film Suraksha (1979) where Mithun played detective Gun Master 9. Mithun’s charm and dances, Bappi Lahiri’s music and Ranjeeta’s presence brought success to this James Bond kind of hindi film and Mithun and Ranjeeta pair became popular.

Their popularity was further increased with the success of Raj Shri Production’s musical Tarana. Film had very good music and still somebody can be found singing somewhereGunche lage hain kehne (Singer - Shailendra Singh).

Dancing Mithun and Ranjeeta on the duet Hum Tum dono saath mein bheeg jayenge barsaat mein (Singers - Shailendra Singh and Usha Mangeshkar), added charm to the film and their pair was established more strongly.

Later they appeared in many successful films like Unnees Bees, Hum se badh kar kaun, Dhuaan, Taqdeer ka Badshah, Ghar ek Mandir etc.

Later Mithun married Yogita Bali and while after success of Hum Paanch and Ghulami and Disco Dancer he was gaining strength at BO and was making his position strong in hindi films, Ranjeeta though got to work with Vijay Anand in Rajput and Subhash Ghai in Krodhi and Ramesh Sippy in Satte pe Satta but she could not make her position strong as a solo heroine and slowly faded away. New actreses started shining on screen. In Hindi films, its very difficult for an aging actress to keep her position strong.

Now Mithun and Ranjeeta are back in a adult love story and hope they create their old magic again. To see Mithun in a matured love story will be interesting. Though in Bengali he has done Titali but in Hindi first time he will be doing any such thing.

Lets wait and see how this project comes out before us!

    Oh yes.. They were Garibon ke Dharam.Hema..
    Ranjeeta had three Super Hits in the Intital years Laila Majnu, Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se and Tarana.. and though Gunche lage hain was an instant hit, it was “Sultana Sultana mera naam hai sultana” which made Tarana a big hit..

    As for Mithun.Ranjeeta list is concerend it is a much bigger list including Khwaab, Aadat Se Majboor, Wo Jo Hasina, Faraib, Sun Sajna, Kismat..

    My fav is Dhuaan but more for Raakhi and Amzad rather than Mithun.Ranjeeta who were put at the back seat by two veterans..

    @Pavan,
    Gareebon ke Dharmendra-Hema.:d
    Thats very funny title, like media used to write Mithun C as Gareebon ka Amitabh Bachchan. now ticket for films of both AB and MC are same, but still he was seen as Gareebon ka AB. Perhaps may be media thought poor associated with Mithun more or they thought AB can transform easily in to classy or elite section. whatever was the case.
    Ya Sultana Sultana was a big hit song and the male voice in between the song - Sultana.
    There was a song in Dhuaan- Saathi tere naam ek din jeevan kar jayenge.
    First it was in female voice used on children.
    It was the same film where Rakhi plays the negative character?

    @Krishn,
    Thanks for link of Mrigaya and Mrinal Sen. Mrigaya could hit at right spot of the talent pool Mithun. It looked as if he was meant to play this character. Perfectly suitable.
    Later Hum Paanch also tried to encash this format of Mithun.

    Saathi tere naam wasn’t from Dhuaan.. it was from Ustadi Ustad se..

    Dhuaan had RDB scoring some average to good numbers. do you remember “Phir aankh phadki sanam”?

    Yes, It was the one where Rakhi played a negative role.. Though it was a hitchcok’s remake, yet Dulal Guha handled it to a great perfaction and it was one of my favs at that time..

    Thanks for links of songs. Especially Tarana one.
    Its not Gunge its Gunche.
    Can other songs of Tarana be traced. Sultana and Bheeg jaynge barsat mein?

  16. Aditya Pant on March 7th, 2008 4:30 am

    Tarana is the only album I can think of (apart from Jai Santoshi Maa) where Usha Mangeshkar was the lead vocalist. Wonder why even Rajshri productions didn’t repeat her much after Tarana. I remember the songs being such a rage when I was a kid - especially Sultana.

  17. RK on March 7th, 2008 4:58 am

    @Aditya,
    She(UM)could be find mostly in the films where Usha Khanna and Rajesh Roshan have given music.
    Before Lata and then Asha, scope has been very less for other female singers to grow independently. Moreover if every composer wanted to give their best then they went for best singers available.
    After Lata and Asha’s presence had become strong, other singers got less number of songs.
    Only after 1982-83 when Lata started singing less number of songs Alka Yagnik and Anuradha Podwal etc started getting many songs. Before them Hemlata, Prreti Sagar got less number of songs and before that Sharda, Suman Kalyanpur etc.
    Lata and Asha have been best two and most consistent also.

  18. Aditya Pant on March 7th, 2008 8:13 am

    @RK: I do get your point, but i don’t think Rajshris used much Lata or Asha in the late 70s/ 80s, so I assumed more work would flow Usha’s way. I guess that was because Ravindra Jain was their staple composer and hence Hemlata got most of their songs.

    As for me, I don’t like UMs voice much.

  19. RK on March 7th, 2008 8:48 am

    @Adtiya,
    Ravindra Jain used Hemlata, Arti Mukherji, Runa Laila and other female singers in his films but Lata and Asha still appeared in his music, Asha remained more during late 70s and Lata came again with Ravindra Jain’s entry in to Raj Kapoor’s camp in Prem Rog.
    Though in between in Tapasya and Chitchor both sisters were missing but both were there again in Fakira. so sometimes producer and director also might have decided. and who can say other than Ravindra Jain if he thought who should sing which song and he got freedom to decide.
    and we dont know family conditionof Usha Mangeshkar if she was that active or not.
    Her voice has that Khanak like Shamshad Beghum had in her voice. or Sharda had. Its just matter of success and if UM also had got many successful songs then perhaps opinion could have been bit different about her. people like a lot Shamshad Beghum’s songs.:)

  20. Pavan Jha on March 7th, 2008 9:59 am

    mungada, mungada, mungada, main gud ki dali..

  21. Aditya Pant on March 7th, 2008 10:14 am

    @pavan: that’s obviously the most famous UM song :)

    @ RK: I agree that the producer and director have a say in the choice of singers, but I think Ravindra Jain really ‘promoted’ Hemlata. And he hasn’t really used LM or AB that much unless when the producer might have insisted (e.g. Raj Kapoor). His entire filmography of 70s and 80s would have just a handful of Lata or Asha songs. Y

    You may be right in saying that general perception about her might have changed if she got more success, but i don’t think that would’ve changed my personal opinion.

    And talking of Sharda, I don’t think much of her singing. Whatever she got was only because of Shankar. But yes, Shamshad Begum I like.

  22. Pavan Jha on March 7th, 2008 12:39 pm

    Oh yes.. I was not revealing that.. but a ref to UM made me start humming.. so I just hummed it here :)
