Mithya - if raghu romeo meets satya then….
…..am still wondering. Few minutes into the film, there is an interesting scene. After a roadside shootout, Vinay Pathak and his friend Brijendra Kala, without worrying much about anything, just want to relieve themselves. And as poor Ranvir Shourie gets the golden shower (without any fun) trying to hide from the shootout incident, Vinay sings away samundar me nahakar aur bhi namkeen ho gayee ho!
This scene reflects the whole mood of the film. It swings from comic to tragic and gets emotional too. But ends up as a black comedy. I wondered why wouldnt some gangster run away after a shootout instead of relieving themselves. Nah..they generally dont do so. But then Mithya moves along this little unknown track till the end.
Mithya is about a struggling actor who gets to play a real life role with every kind of possible emotion. The twists and turns are unpredictable. But if you have seen Raghu Romeo, you can guess the way Rajat’s story will move. Its similar in many way. A helpless character stuck in a situation where he doesnt have any control. As the characters keep on messing the things, the excitement level keeps on increasing.
Its an ensemble cast of some of the actors who deliver almost every time. Mr Reliables - Ranvir Shorey, Naseeruddin Shah, Vinay Pathak, Sourabh Shukla and Harsh Chhaya. Neha Dhupia - looks like she is the new one in the parallel gang. Lot of cleavage and some good acting - Neha delivers well as the Don’s moll. And its such a pleasure to see Irawati Harshe (sorry…could not get her last name right. in the credit its something else). Vinay doesnt have much to do. The film belongs to Ranvir. But the man to watch out for is Brijendra Kala - some smart lines, great delivery and a straight face sans much emotion in strange situations. It cant get better than this.
The one thing that didnt i like about the film is that the first half and second half looks like two completely different films. Starting out with comedy, it moves to tragedy and then it gets emotional. So much so that i desperately felt like tickling myself a bit in the second half. Why ? what happened to all those one liners ?
The don business reminded me of satya and company. Dock side meetings, dimly lit lanes and the gang bangs. This time there was no voice over. Read or heard somewhere that Rajat wanted Ramu to direct this one after he made Satya. I can see the reasons why. And now that Rajat himself has directed it, even then you can clearly spot the Ramu influence. Hope Ramu would catch this one soon to realise his good old days. And dont know how this happened but some shots were not in focus and were quite jarring to eyes.
Its first good film of 2008. So go and watch it. Rajat has that eye and ears for uncanny surprises(if you watch raghu romeo, mixed doubles and mithya back to back, you know the trick). Dont expect another Bheja Fry (though i never liked it much except for Vinay Pathak. And then it was straight lifted). Mithya is an engaging tale for sure. In the second half, Rajat plays a smart trick too…one is kept wondering if Ranveer is cheating the audience also or is it the same what it appears on the screen ? Cant give out much of the story. It will spoil the fun. But clearly the story idea is much bigger and better than the screenplay. How to take the idea forward, what to do with Ranvir’s character, what end it should have, which way should Neha Dhupia’s character go - i was expecting much. It went on a completely different tangent. The aftertaste isnt quite what you would expect while entering the theatre.
Whether its a copy of Johnny Stecchino or Didi Der Doppelganger ? I havent seen any of these films but the basic idea looks similar. Now there is no copyright on ideas. Right ? Every romantic story is same by that logic of “story idea”. Its all about how you play with your idea. And Rajat plays it well.

Well … just for everyone this film is a remake of the italian film - JOHNNY STACCINO … featuring Roberto Benigini whose place Ranveer has taken.
RAJAT STILL HAS TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING NEW … its the same gangster stuff … why can’t we think of something else … why do these gangsters have to surface in all comedies … Wake up RK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JACK
Jack - did you see the movie ????
why don’t u watch it and then pass an arm chair judgement ????
better still .. write an entire post reviewing the same and subit it to PFC Iview ….
support your arguement pls
Is this going to be a sleeper hit of 2008?
A low key release,mild publicity,good reviews.
Why was’nt this selected for a Ronin review?
Isn’t ‘My Name IS Anthony Gonsalves’ a sleeper hit? Or it is an underrated film?
Well I am looking forward for the movie. I think if they copy it properly, it would go well with the aam janta. Look at Sunday.. such a lousy job!
The movie is good in the first half……..but fails
miserably inn the second…….ranvir rocks…overall an average film which may touch some chords with people who love black comedies
Gotta find a way to watch this one!
Does anyone know of any film fest screenings of ‘Mithya’ in near future? It was there in the Rotterdam film festival that I missed :(
I was looking forward to this movie with a lot of expectations.. But it failed to satisfy me..something went terribly wrong with the movie, maybe because it wanted to be too many films in one.. Trying too hard to be like Satya, Pulp Fiction, Don at the same time
I would recommend this movie to Farhan Akhtar, this is how a Don remake could have been.
The movie is unpredictable and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I really liked the casting, best ever in any recent Hindi film. Every actor has done his job really well. Neha Dhupia can act too, which is a revelation.
@HG
i went to see Anthony gonsalves 1 week after it got released .. 3 ppl in the entire hall including me and friend .. picture okay thi waise itni buri nahi thi ..lol
smokerjoe…neha dhupia can act for sure. plz watch 1.40 ki last local…she is superb in teh film. the film has more turn and twists than any other film in recent times. and its damn funny. from start to finsh.
I did watch 1.40 ki last local, the movie is different but i didn’t really like it. I like Abhay Deol though in the film. He is one brave actor.
Neha was also good, I agree. But it’s the other characters.
SmokerJoe- Totally agree- Mithya is the film that Farhan Akhtar’s Don should probably have been.
neha dhupia is Hot !! and she can act well in off-beat roles :x
Who is Brijendra Kala? refresh my memory. everyone is talking about him. Will wait to see the film before commenting on it. I feel I will like it. I do agree with your point about Rajat’s favorite devices. I liked Raghu Romeo as an indie. Not sure how this one is. I didn’t really want to see Naseer do any don for that matter after Mastana but let’s see. I am actually scared of the multiplex audience turning this into another ‘kill them’ fest for me. I hate it when they watch a film which they don’t want to. anyways.
btw, that Don thing was said by Anurag in his post after ASEAN.
Tushar - brijendra kala is the short dark complexioned guy in YUVA .. the newspaper owner/incharge whom AB Jr so off handedly dismisses in the first few scenes (when he goes to the newspaper office for the job of security guard at rani’s behest)
http://in.movies.yahoo.com/artists/Gafla/summary-2849.html
He’s also the over intrested and poking nose neighbour of Abhay Deol in Manorama 6 ft Under..
A very fine ‘north indian’ actor … seems at home with sleazy roles …. Does a fine job in mithya too
also … somehow phonix .. i felt the second half was more GodFather than Satya (which of course is Ramu’s inspirational-defining film i.e Godfather) …
I felt the second half couldve been better … they perhaps tried for a tragi - black comedy ala jaane bhi do yaaron .. but it fails towards the end … I wish the film wouldve been a WOW experience .. instead it became a ‘not bad’ experience for me :-(
Tushar, which means, Anurag and I think alike at least for this film.
