Mongol
lead actor of this movie is tadanobu asano. my favorite. he acts so well that it seems he is not acting at all. here he plays the initial years of geghis khan.it is the making of genghis khan. biography of one of the most notorious figure in human history. film deals with the events that make genghis khan what he was. historical accuracy - which i am in no way near to comment about - aside it is a beautiful film.
nine year old young genghis khan -temudgin - is traveling is with his father. who is the khan of a wandering tribe in mongolia. his father had stolen his bride from another clan few years back. because of this there is a rivalry between these two clans. khan want’s temudgin to choose a bride from this clan and this way end the dispute. on the way khan and temudgin spent a night with another clan leader who he is friend with. temudgin and his future wife saw each other. they converse and girl tell temudgin to choose her. temudgin tells his wish to his father. they are engaged as husband and wife and it is agreed that when they would become young temudgin will come and take his wife with him. at the climax when genghis khan in making tells his son that it is very important for a man to choose a right bride. like he has chosen his . wife (borte) replied to it that she has chosen him.
on the way back temudgin’s father is killed by betrayal, following the rules of the land. a hard life is in store for temudgin. few years later temudgin returns to take his wife with him. for some time the family is together. happy time doesn’t last long when next calamity strikes. the clan from whom temudgin’s father has stolen his wife attacks and take borte with them. wounded temudgin is left behind. he asks his blood brother jamukha to help him get his wife back. jamukha tells temudgin that he has to wait for one year before he could help him.
with the help of jamukha, temudgin attacks the clan and gets borte back. following events leaves the friendship between jamukha and temudgin scarred. thing does not remain rosy for temudgin for long. temudgin’s family is scattered again and he end up as a slave. in the slave market chinese king is looking for slaves. his eyes rest upon temudgin. monk accompanying king tell him that don’t purchase that mongol. he will not forget the humiliation. against the monks advise temudgin is put in a cage for the amusement of the people. monk appear again and ask temudgin to spare the monestary when he will come back.
borte is now the mistress of a merchant. with the carvan she comes to china. there he frees her husband from the captivity. now free temudgin learns about the pathetic conditions of mongol. different clans fighting each other. he decides to unite the mongols. and face his old fried jamukha for the final battle on the issue of who will be the leader of mongols.
film end with the image of the monastery standing safe and bells ringing in the monastery while the voice over tells us that the chinese empire has been erased from the face of the earth. sequel is in making. that will show the world crusades of genghis khan. nothing extra ordinary about the film. but it is engrossing. the vast land of mongloia looks beautiful in the film. slow pace and a delight to senses. film was nominated for oscar in category of forgien film.

It was a visual experience. Yes the story would go slow down in places, but then it was the director’s prerogative to dwell in certain elements he wanted to romance with (for example the great Mongol landscape as a backdrop for Genghis’ khan’s romantic scenes with his wife)… this is isn’t a typical war movie if one plans to go with that mindset. I think it will turn into one with the subsequent parts (it’s a trilogy with Mongol being the first).
I recall seeing a Hollywood version of Chengiz Khan, starring Omar Sharif in title role, with Eli Wallach playing the bad guy. This looks interesting for sure.
Though it had a good performance from Omar Sharif, the movie was pretty much a Hollywood view of world history. European actors made up to look like Mongols, hammy acting from others, a hot looking heroine, lots of steamy stuff. Hollywood generally believes that make some actors with slanted eyes, put in some weird disguises and you have a period epic dealing with Far East.
@ Ratnakar - you are right about the hamminess of the original, in the past Hollywood played hard and fast with minority casting and, Omar Shariff seemed to be the “exotic” foreigner favourite star here for a period of Hollywood history. He has been one of my favourite actors since childhood, and I always loved it when he was cast correctly, not made up to be something he wasn’t…
What I loved about Mongol is that even though the director took some liberties with the true history, it was based on the Asian Khan, not the view of him from the West. It was refreshing to see the other side of the story, not the Eurocentric one. This is truly one of the most spectacular, and most visually stunning, films I saw this year…
@t!- The movie is somewhat better compared to The Conqueror, where John “Duke” Wayne was cast as Chengiz Khan, one of the best examples of miscasting.
Even now, in Hollywood, still has not much changed. Most movies dealing with Asian history, always has the great White man, comming to the rescue of the opressed Asians.
Omar Sharif and Antony Quinn, were always the exotic foreigners. As Quinn remarked once “I always end up with a country”.
BTW have you seen The Message and Omar Mukhtar, Lion of the Desert? Two of the best movies, dealing with the Arab world. The Message was a wonderful retelling of the birth of Islam, and Omar Mukhtar was one of the best historical dramas i had seen.
Sorry to be aspoiltsport..i did not like it..it was daaaamn lenghty…way too slow and boring for me..visually yes it was great..but basic story-telling was lacking for me…wanted the film the to end asap
boring.
I loved Mongol. Asano was inspired casting. I hate it when they don’t cast the correct ethnicity while doing historical films. Recently saw “Attila the Hun” played by Gerard Butler complete with a Scottish accent. Gave me a headache.
MONGOL does keep one engrossed though the screenplay takes the easy way out at most of the points.
However disappointing was when the film played a story arc whereby temudgin is captured and kept a prisoner by the chinese community, only to have Temudgin come and wipe out the entire community once he becomes the Khan.
It was a rather interesting and intriguing plot..but ruined by being something totally fictional!
Ahem….it was a kingdom called Tungus, a province of china, which was destroyed.. not mainland china… That will come later, most probably in part 2 of the trilogy.
going to watch it very soon !
