Movies in the New Age- The India Today Conclave ‘08
There has been discussions here before on Movies, their marketing and challenges we face in dealing with piracy - i say ‘we’ here for convenience sake (devlish-eheh). India Today organised a conclave with different entrepreneurs and main speakers Aamir Khan, Shekhar Kapur (moderator) and Ashok Amritraj recently (i believe they do it ever year) and aamirkhan.org has put up videos of the event on Youtube for all of us to see.
Aamir had this to say in an interview at the Conclave
Q: Taare Zameen Par touched many hearts. Do you think you have been successful in integrating commercial and art cinema?
Firstly, I don’t believe in the concept of art and commercial cinema. I have never distinguished them. For me, the main aim is make popular films which cater to the popular market, to the masses. To me, the audience is the one that decides. Cinema is an art form in itself. So it’s a way you deal with it, the way you see it. Taare… is a simple story and I did not aim at making it a commercial film or an art film. My goal was to give it a platform so that it becomes popular and caters to a larger audience.

Ashok Amritraj on a separate interview says
Indian movies for long have been wrapped in Indian culture and milieu. What I am keen on is telling stories for the global audience. I mean there must be experiences here that people around the world can relate to. Those are the stories I am looking at.

What takes place is an interesting commentary on Film as it was made in the past, as is made today and as it could be made tomorrow. Topics ranging from distribution, content, content management systems, studio based systems, independent makers etc etc make for an enlightening experience which i share here.

Shekhar is obviously more tuned to the changes happening. He raised a lot of very interesting questions which were left undiscussed/unanswered as is the norm with most conferences
