Murgadoss Arrested!!!!!

Murgadoss, the director of Tamil Ghajni and the director of Aamir Khan’s Ghajni has been arrested in Salem, when he was coming back from paying visit to the Tamil Writer Sujatha’s Funeral. For all those, who have not much knowledge of Murgadoss, he has worked on two of Chiranjeevi’s movies Tagore and Stalin.

This website says:

A.R. Murgadoss, the super-hit director of Tamil Ghajini was “arrested” while coming out of the house of Sujatha in Mylapore, where he had gone to pay his last respect to the late writer!

Now why exactly was he arrested…here is the funny part…appaerently the producer of Tamil Ghajini was kept in dark about the remake of it in Hindi with Aamir Khan….geeez..the producer Salem Chandrasekhar, now does he live on Mars? The remake has Ghajni has been in news for eons, Aamir blogs about it, Murgadoss keeps giving interviews about it…every Tom Dick and Harry who likes or dislikes Aamir Khan, who likes or is passionate about movies knows about the Remake of Ghajni…now where was Mr. Salem all these days?

The ace director who is now doing the Hindi version of Ghajini with Aamir Khan was arrested by the Salem Police on a complaint filed by Salem Chandrasekhar, the Tamil Ghajini producer. Chandrasekhar had filed a police complaint with the Salem Police saying that Murugadoss had kept him in the dark regarding the making of a Hindi version of Ghajini and he has not been paid his due share of the remake rights.

I am damn sure, that this will be resolved amicably later ” behind the closed doors” or whatever, but, what surprises me is, how and when all this kinda news comes to keep the buzz going….”why now” is question more than “why”. From what i have heard atleast is that Aamir has bought the rights of the original way back. But, you never know, i have very little idea on copyrights, or do they even exist in Bollywood?

But here is the cracker, as expected…Murgadoss Released!!!! Hahah…funny is our Filmdom sometimes…

Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi intervened as Murgadoss’s arrest was not followed by any legal formalities. Following this Salem crime Inspector Krishnan was suspended.

The police team had picked up Murgadoss from Chennai on Friday, following a complaint filed by Chandrasekharan. However, as news of the arrest spread, the police panicked as no legal formalities had been followed by Krishnan and his team before taking Murgadoss to Salem.

Publicity Gimmick… i cry Hoarse…what say?

You’d think he’d be arrested for ripping off Memento in the original Ghajini. Too little too late?

This has to be the joke of the year..Murugadoss takes a heavy ‘inspiration’ from Memento without the original makers’ permission and nobody arrests him or anything; but he gets arrested for remaking a movie that he himself directed..Seems like a scene straight out of Joseph Heller’s Catch 22 !!

Anyone seen both the films (Memento and Ghajini)? How similar are the two? Memento’s brilliant, how good was Ghajini?

  5. Irrespective of the fact whether he remade the film without the rights or not, cops just can’t go around arresting people without due process.

Good thing the bugger was suspended.

the end of ghajini was one of those 80’s films with a Dharam paaji like manner, the hero (Surya) takes on the villans in a GIRLS HOSTEL .. It is raining and the compound has become a mini swimming pool. They’re fighting and ALL OF THE 50 ODD GIRLS ARE WATCHING THEM FIGHT .. NO ONE BOTHERS TO CALL THE POLICE … AND NO WATCHMAN IS THERE (why was the watchman there when in my college days i wanted to do bird watching)

GHAJINI was a masala version of a concept from “MEMENTO” … Its a fun watch if u watch it without memento in ur mind and go in the same frame of mind as for a Farah khan movie !!! u will actually come back happy !!

i cudnt tolerate the last few scenes of GHAJINI .. the ones that KK was mentioning !!

Surya, Asin and the music was good !!!

Hopefully in this version Aamir will restrain the director and ‘polish’ the script. I think I understand what they’re trying to make but any fantastical fight scene would be extremely annoying to watch. Subtlety needs to be the order of the day.

    COming to Ghajini,
I saw it and enjoyed it till the last 40 minutes.
The non-linear aspect of STML was not used. However the story unveiling through some third party’s reading of the protagonit’s diary was interestingly used. However the loose ends were too many and the film solely survived though Surya’s acting and Asin’s antics plus cool Harris Jayraj’s music. No complains masala movie totally.
Mugrugadoss’ earlier venture Ramana was many notches higher inspite of Vijaykanth and the best ending in Thamizh movies in some time.

Aamir mentioned that Murugadoss had never seen Memento and Ghajini was a figment of his own imagination. How does Aamir know? And BTW – Aamir also thought Memento was a mediocre sort of film, hard to understand and not that good. So by definition Ghajini has to be better than Memento!

  23. Anybody with half a brain could understand Memento.
Oh and I raise my hand.

But what really appalls me no end is people actually admitting to illegally ripping of films like it was their birthright.

Not only is this morally wrong it also kills original thought and if this persists the Indian film industry will eventually be gobbled up by the Hollywood monster as it’s happened in the rest of the world.

  26. @RK

I fail to see the link between the two but allow me to clarify. What I meant was that if all Indian cinema will offer is watered down versions of Hollywood and European films then the audience will eventually start watching the dubbed originals instead of the remakes.

The reason that India and Hong Kong film industries survived and flourished was their our brand of cinema was unique and distinct which doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.

Hollywood studios are now planning same day global releases for tentpole pictures like Spiderman, Superman etc to maximize revenues and if there isn’t good counter programming against that then the nascent indie scene will cease to exist.

Still don’t get the constitution ref though :-?

I raise my hand as well. Under-rated classic.

    @Mithun Gangopadhyay,
    1. ‘Understanding’ was easy? Really? The hugely open ending was the ‘cherry on top’ of the whole film. Was Teddy truthful? Did his wife die by his hands or the crack-heads? So many possible endings, or rather beginnings to the film.
    2. As long as the makers give due credit to the original, and try and adapt it to local tastes, I don’t see too many problems to ‘remaking’ good foreign films.

  29. @Doremi

The fact that it was open ended doesn’t make it obtuse and the fact that it’s #27 on the all time greatest films list on a populist site like IMDB proves that it isn’t merely a gimmicky art house flick.

Layers and undertones add to the thematic density but in no way make it hard to understand. I saw it when I was 20 and got it the first time around.

Due credit doesn’t just mean acknowledging the source material. One needs to buy the rights for it as well. Don’t you think that the writer who came up with the original concept needs to be compensated if there are other versions made of his script ?

The South Indian remake rights of Munnabhai were sold for a phenomenal amount and everybody benefited. Surely the same principle should apply to foreign films as well. If we don’t give Intellectual Property the respect it deserves it will one day come and bite us in the ass.

No, it was not the open-endedness that makes it complicated, its the way it is narrated. It is confusing and it doesn’t let you rest. You miss a tiny little part and you are screwed.

I raise my hand too. I did not find Memento confusing rather, I liked the intent of the movie to show a non-linear narration and still produce the chilling effect (’open-ended(ness)’) at the end.

Ghajini was a complete let down except for the romance part of it. The movie is so loosely bound that you can see the scenes fall out of the screen!!

memento had an awesome ending. plays out like descartes mentioned in one of his books about the nature of human existence.
the only problem i have with ghajini is that i don’t think it will acknowledge the ‘inspiration’ it got from memento. and then aamir posts in his blog about how it is morally wrong to watch movies on pirated dvds. i’m sorry, but in ghajini’s case, i will make it a point to watch it only on a pirated dvd.
