Music Director Ravi : Beete hue lamhon ki mahak saath to hogi
Pavan Jha | Exclusive, Movies | October 4, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Met this legend for the first time exactly three years back and you can find an account of the meeting here.. Our local music group SurYatra had felicitated him earlier and Ravi ji always showers his blessings on us.. So every time we get the news of his coming to town, we always catch him for a discussion and he always oblige..
chehare pe khushi chhaa jaati hai aa.Nkho.n me.n suruur aa jaataa hai
jab tum mujhe apanaa kahate ho, apane pe Guruur aa jaataa hai!
At 83, he is still going strong and still working.. A man whose energy levels can even beat a forty plus worker today… He is one of the living legends of golden era of hindi film music. Here is an account of our meet held on October 01, 2008
The meeting started on a sad note, on demise of Mahendra Kapoor.. Ravi ji mentioned, just one day before the bad news, he was their in a show celebrating Lata ji’s 80th birthday and next day he came to know about Mahendra Kapoor’s death.. and reiterated his immortal song from film waqt
Kal jahaan basati thi khushiyaan, aaj hai maatam wahaan
waqt laaya tha bahaaren, waqt laaya hai khizaan
waqt kii, paaband hai.n, aati jaati, raunake.n
waqt hai, phoolo.n ki sej, waqt hai, kaa.nto.n kaa taaj
When he found the environment is getting heavier and sad, he just turned it around with an interesting kissa of the same song.. They unit was doing a show/shoot in Nairobi when Waqt was specially released (or premiered) in London.. There were two theaters at the same place, one showing Dilip saab’s Aadmi and another one was prepared for Waqt show.. so the unit asked the distributors “ki Dilip saab ki film ke saamne kya wakt tikegi”.. the distributor showed them a big banner outside the hall with Waqt song
Aadami ko chaahiye, Waqt se Dar kar rahe (in big and bold.. )
kaun jaane, kis gha.Dii, waqt kaa, badale mijaaz
So the discussion began on a note on the beauty of lyrics and sahir saab.. Ravi ji told that Sahir was a brilliant poet and lyricist and he on one hand if penned chalo ik baar, also penned khaali dibba khali bota in Neel Kamal and or Bina sifarish mile naukari in Aadmi aur Insaan.. in one of the parties organised by Moraraji Desai, when requested to recite poetry, Sahir saab recited
“Desh me itane jhande kyun hain
sab jhando.n me dande kyun hain
janata itni patali sookhi
leader ye mustande kyun hai.n”
From Sahir the talk moved to Shakeel and few interesting kissa’s of Shakeel saab like once in an award function Rajendra Krishna (who used to be playful and loved to have fun with other lyricist) sent Shakeel saab to take the award (ki aap hi ka naam liya hai) even when the name announced for Sahir,
creating an emberessing yet funny situation for all.. In the meantime he told us that he started as a lyricist too in vachan when he penned two songs “chandamama door ke” and “ek paisa dede”.. We had already discussed his intial days when we had first meeting three years back (check out the archives )
He told us almost all the times, he created tunes on words but the tune of “dil me kisi ke pyaar ka” was created 20 years back and was one of his initial tunes… He wanted to use it in his first film Vachan but could not.. Producer Devendra Goel told him to use in any forthcoming film.. So next time he tried for Goel’s next film Ek Saal, Prem Dhawan was the lyricist amd since Ravi saab used to create tunes on words.. He had to adjust the tune again to have the exact mood and it became “Sab kuchh luta ke hosh me aaye to kya kiya”.. and finally in Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka, he used the tune, again a Devendra Goel film…
Another trivia was on “Raha gardishon me hardam” which was recorded for Ghoonghat in the voice of Mukesh ji. Infact since Mukesh ji was singing Raviji told us he took inspiration for the meter from “Dil jalta hai to jalne de” and composed “Raha gardishon me hardam” which was picturised on Pradeep Kumar.. But one day S S Vaasan (the maker) told Ravi ji, that the song is brilliant but unfortuantely not taking the film forward and puts a break when the viewer would expect some happeneings so we are removing it.. Later Shakeel saab and Ravi ji were doing Do Badan and they played it to Raj Khosla, who asked permissions from SS Vasan for using the song.. but he wanted to have it in Rafi ji’s voice so the song was rerecorded in Rafi saab’s voice.
Another interesting piece was on how “kal chaman tha aaj ik sehra hua” was created.. A small film producer/director wanted to have a mujara on a Kotha on “Ghar Hua Gulshan hua Sehra Hua” and Ravi ji composed it and it was loved by the maker and he said “Waah waah Asha ji se karwayenge”..
Later the director came back and want him to change the song for the hero singing the sad number.. Ravi ji asked to have it rewritten but the director told him to retain the same words as it suited the situation. So he recomosed it.. but a few weeks later he came back and asked it to change it Raviji left that film..
After same time he was doing Khaandaan, so Rajendra Krishna penned kal chaman tha, aaj ik sehra hua on the same tune..
Then he told us that he used to make quite a number of versions/tunes for a song that he loved.. anything the he could think he used to record and then cancel most of them out and finalize one.. Another example came with reference to Itni jaldi na karo in Aadmi aur Insaan… Sahir saab penned and Ravi ji composed a melodius romantic tune for the song.. but BR Chopra saab wanted to have a bit of sensuality and naughty feel so he had to entirely recomosed it with a few dashes of aha – oho’s..
Chopra saab had an unusual situation for him in Dhundh.. He wanted to have a Kothe ka song.. but wanted to have it picturised on Deven Verma rather than the courtsean.. and wanted a cheaper song.. So he composed “jobna se chunariya” .. Dhundh got back Sahir saab again in discussion.. Ravi ji shared the name as lyricist for this song on record with him..
Next he told about Gurudutt.. He told that in Chaudhavin Ka Chaand, he and Shakeel saab took only five minutes to create the title song.. but eventually when he recorded he was not happy with the song… specially the way Rafi saab intially recorded the song with a Sharaabi lehja.. He discussed with Gurudutt to have it rerecorded.. Gurudutt agreed… but at the same time Rafi saab was doing stage shows and he made that song too popular so that Gurudutt asked him, if you rerecord it now, will that make it much bigger hit than it is now.. so they kept the original recording..
Another song that was created for the film for a tawaif situation, the unhappy hero is quite disturbed and the courtsean is singing.. and Shakeel saab penned “Jiyarwa uljhan me ho”.. song composed and got cancelled.. four tunes were composed but got cancelled always as the tune was getting heavy.. They decided to change the mood of the song..and to give it a little easier lighter tone.. and Shakeel rewrote as Dil ki kahaani rang laayee hai, allah duhai hai duhai hai.. Same night they decided to change another song.. The Johny Walker one, which was initially penned as Shaahi Fakeer hoon, Mastana Peer hoon was changed to Ye duniya gol hai keeping the same tune…
In the same sitting Gurudutt wanted to know how Mili khaak me muhabbat is shaping up as well.. So Ravi ji sang it.. gurudutt asked once more.. again sang it he again asked once more.. Ravi ji sang it for four hours again and again hundreds of time till 4 am in the morning and was so loved by Gurudutt..
The discussion somehow come to an interesting aspect “Inspiration”.. He told usually producers come up with some thing that they want something similar.. SD Narang came to him that he wanted something on the lines of “laal laal gaal”, another song “mr john baba khan” was also composed on the same tune.. so he composed “CAT cat cat mane billi” in Dilli Ka Thag on the same.. He then told us his “Dekha hai zindagi ko” (ek mahal ho sapno ka) was composed so many times but the “patthar maar” (cursing) effect was not coming.. then he took inspiration of “throw” from a Noorjehan son “Baithi hoon teri yaad ka lekar ke sahara”, that got him the ultimate effect that he wanted..
Once he was inspired was a very bad singer whom he rejected and but later while recording a song of Chiraag Kahaan Roshni Kahaan, he used the style of throwing of that singer in the song “Bada bedard jahaan hai”.. Once he was inspired while travelling to Khandala where some kids were shouting at an underbridge and it was echoing.. He used the same effect in “Ye hawa ye hawa ye hawa” (Gumrah)
In he final leg of the meeting he took us to his new home.. the Malyalam Cinema.. He is fondly known as Bombay Ravi there and giving melodious music since last 20 years.. Infact he has won a few kerala state award for best music director and a few of his songs sung by Chitra have won national award for best singing.
He told us even in Malayalam Cinema he is composing on written words.. though it was difficult in few initial years.. but he has been enjoying working there.. He considered Vaishali is one of his finest works.. He has also enjoyed working with Yesudas who has sung quate a number of songs on his tunes. He was recently awarded with Devrajan Award. His latest hindi film was “Ek Alagh Mausam“.

Pavan: Thanks for this. Ravi and Khaiyaam are among the last links to that era and you have culled some precious nuggets from him in your conversations.
“Dekha hai zindagi ko” inspiration from “Baithi hoon teri yaad ka lekar ke sahara” is so subtly done that you don’t realize till you focus on the throw.
Thanks for this. I feel an immediate need to beef up my Ravi Collection. Get some unknown gems on board. The ones you have mentioned are generally there.
Very nicely done, Pavan. Thanks again.
very very informative sir ji….was great going through this post
@Subrat,
>“Dekha hai zindagi ko” inspiration from “Baithi hoon teri >yaad ka lekar ke sahara” is so subtly done
Absolutely… same holds for Raha gardishon me har dam where he got inspired from Dil jalta hai to jalne de.. but one can not catch the similarities..
What I liked is, he shared his inspirations openly, whether it was Noorjehan or the Bad singer he rejected..
one song I missed to quote in ref to the tune of “Dil me kisi ke pyaar ka” is “Wo dil kahaan se laaon teri yaad jo bhulaaye” from Bharosa, which is again on his favorite tune..
@Indraneel,
Have been listening for for many years.. but even every now and then I get to discover a song that he composed and I wasn’t aware of.. and yesterday we played a medley of his songs and many of the viewers reacted .. “oh.. ye song bhi Ravi ji ka banaya hua hai?”.. They know the song but not about the composer.. Usually whenever he is referenced its only Gumrah, Hamraaz, Waqt, Nikaah or Babul ki duaaen…
There are so many gems like “Mujhe gale se laga lo bahut udaas hoon main”, “Hazaar baatein kahe zamana”, “Aapki inaayatein aapke karam”, “Ye mausam rangeen samaa”, “Dekha hai zindagi ko”, “Choo lene do naazuk”, “Ye zulf agar khul ke”, Jeevan jyot jale” that when we hear we try to link that to either Madan Mohan/SJ/Khaiyyam or Roshan or another composer but not Ravi ji.. One of the reason is that the record companies have not come out with as many as compilations of his as his contemporaries..
Would love to hear from listeners of his songs in Malayalam films. Vaishali, Nakshatrangal, Sargam, Ghazal, Sukrutham, so many landmark scores in last 20+ years…. It is one area that I have still to explore.. Vaishali he considers one of his most challenging projects (specially the Background music) as tough as working with Gurudutt.
I thought it would be great to include some links for people to listen to some rare gems by Ravi that you have mentioned.

I am seriously embarassed to admit that till today i have never heard of a legend like Ravisaab,I just went through all the songs mentioned in this article and i have to say,I can’t believe i missed out on them
I have just sarted serching treaure of “suryatra”.
Ameazing collection. Great devotion of Pawan for music.
Though Ravi sahib’s great songs were known to me but collection of these songs at one place is a good idea. I couldn’t find a singal cd of him till now.
great
So does Ravi Saab have the Mukesh version of “Raha gardishon me hardam”
May be you can ask him to release it.
Aditya,
Checkout the following medley of songs to explore the genres
http://www.suryatra.in/vid/ravikerang.html
(its a medley of songs in different genres.. infact we had to curtail the list by half as it was quite extensive)
Pavan ji you have written the piece passionately. The best thing is that you have reminded the people the great composer who is still around us.
Last night I was listening my old favourite ‘Dil Hai Hamara Phool Se Nazuk, Baazoo Hai Faulaad’ from Faulad and it was a sweet surprise to me that the composer was Ravi ji. I could also get, a fter a marathon search, a 1950 gem – a non-film song- ‘Kal Teri Tasveer Ko Sajde Kiye Hain Raat Bhar’ sung by Hemant Kumar under Ravi’s Baton. I feel every music lover must listen to the lilting melody.
Rajendra
Dear Pavanji,
After a long long time, I am reading a memorable meaningful interview of a legend. Bravo!
Just reminds me of my accidental meeting with him in the stage-wing area of Mumbai’s Dinanath Natyagruha at the program of Manna Da’s felicitation by Lata in 1994 or 95. Imagine my good fortune that day- on stage I was watching Lata and Manna Dey and in the wing, I was sitting in between Bhagwan (the late actor) and Ravi! I had some interesting chat with both of them that day. Have written a piece in Marathi about that. Will try to write in English as well!
Raj,
I hope you’ve read the account of our previous meeting with him that states
“When I entered the room, I found Ravi saab sitting at the study table and writing something in a copy in just the dim light of a table lamp.. At that time, I had a very little idea that the legendary music director is trying to recover from a huge loss incurred during the recent bombay rains washout..
Next four hours we spent discussing on his kissa’s, his films and songs, current trends, his stint in malayalam films, future plans and lots more.. Only at the end of the meeting, Ravi saab told us about the losses he incurred during the recent floods. He told us that his home had about 5ft of floods and he was away.. He has lost a a big chunk of his anmol khazana including lot of tapes and notebooks of his dhun’s notations.. and now he is trying to write almost anything that he could recall whenever he gets a few minutes..”
A big loss for all of us..
@Pavan,
Nice account of meeting with Ravi Ji. Had no idea that he has been giving music in Malyalam films also. There should be some connection between Malayalam Cine Industry and Hindi cine Industry:)
I think Vijay Anand also made 1-2 films in Malayalam.
Begining of many songs often follow same track and it becomes difficult in the initial 10-15 seconds to know which song is going to be started.
This was the case with one song of Sarswati Chandra and one song of Humraj. Both start with similar tuning and even orchestra is similar.
This is quite good to know about few songs which were recorded earlier in the voice of some other singer and later they were recorded in the voice of a different singer for a different film and people did not get a chance to listen the first version and later version also became so popular.
Able music directors and singers make this possible.
Thank you Pavan!
gr8 pavan as usually.i m not able to open www.suryatra.in/oct 3 2008 there was a 2 hour interview on vividh bharti.
Very good one Pawan..
Pavanji, I think it is “kasak” and not “mahek”….I didn’t want to nitpick but it was in the title so I couldn’t help it…hope you don’t mind…
thank you for the nice article…off to Raviji’s songs..
vikrant: I don’t think it was Pawan’s intention to quote the line from the song verbatim. He modified the line in the title to make it more appropriate for the post.
Vaishali’s music was just as popular in Telugu also, “Prema Jeevana Nadam” is one of the all time best melodies, put beautifully into the frame by Dir. Bharatan. Even LP, OP Nayyar, RD Burman, Salil Choudhary had come out with very good tunes in telugu. one would need a whole story onthis to elaborate.
Every now and then you find these gems on PFC.
Loved the post.
Thank you Pavanji
ek wo bhi diwali thi ek y bhi diwali hai
Well done Pavan.

Its pity that the man who gave us such wonderful melodies we fail to recognize him.
Salute the Master God Bless the Magician Ravi Saab.
Thankyou
Aj
it is very tough to get a good name from malayalam industry, but with a magic composition of beautiful music Bombay Ravi saab captured everyone’s heart,he is a living legend,im a die heart fan of him,i always wonder how a non malayali can do such wonderful creation with all modesty and smell of malayalam,
i have noted one thing all his composition very tough to sing,so thanks to yasudas and chitra also……
Dear Pawan,
I had the oppurtunity to watch Hamraaz today and was lost in the magic created by Raviji. It was so impressing that I had spent hours on net to know the contact numbers of Raviji. I wished if I could speak to him just once to congratulate him and to tell him that the melodies which he had created are a gift to mankind and brings peace to the ever disturbed soul of today’s man.
Please do me a favour by mailing me the address or ph.nos. of Raviji.
Waiting for your reply.
I want to download the fomous one time very popular song “Chanda Mama Door Ke” for my grand children, but it is nowhere available on any of the sites of RAVI though is from his very first film Vachan.
Will some please make me available this sweet song.
A grand programme OLD IS GOLD featuring songs like Yeh raatein yeh mausam from Dilli Ka Thug composed by Ravi was presented Musicolor singers like Sarita Rajesh and Sagar Savarkar at Padma Ranga hall at Shanmukhananda hall.
Singer Sarita Rajesh beautifully rendered Lataji’s timeless gem Ae mere dile nadaan composed by Raviji from the film Tower House and enthralled the audience. The event OLD IS GOLD was organised by Rotary Club and presented by mumbai band MUSICOLOR. Rajesh Subramanian the creative head designed the event. For show contact 9820587610
“Baabul Ki duwaayein” brings tears into my eyes every time I hear that. Rafi and Ravi at their best. One of the greatest songs from our Hindi movies.
But his best album has to be “Nakhashatangal”. Am lucky to hear that. All the songs are par excellence with “Aaeyum Bhavagayakan” being the pick of the lot for me.
Mukesh songs have always touched music lovers. Musicolor organised a musical nite featuring songs of legendary singer Mukesh at the ISKCON auditorium Juhu. Singers Anand Bahal,Sarita Rajesh,Priya Joshi, Sanjay Tandon and Kiran Shembekar rendered immoratl songs of Mukesh from films like Madhumati, Andaz, Phir Subah Hogi,Saranga,Sangam,Mera Naam Joker.
Got the wonderful opportunity to listen to singer Sarita Rajesh at the Rotary Club event. Oh my what a outstanding singer and what a beautiful voice she possess. She belted out golden gems of Lata Mangeshkar like Tum na jane kis jahan, Aayega aanewala, Root ke tum toh chal diye, Ae mere dile nadaan, Tum kya jano, Balma bada nadaan, Aaja re pardesi, Yun hasraton ke daag, Hum pyar mein jalnewalon ko, Woh toh chale gaye e dil, Kuch dil ne kaha. It was total bliss !!!!!!
