MUST WATCH- Four Eyed Monsters
I have been so edgy all week, things are happening for me, producers want to make my films, the big films with stars but no one wants to make my smaller films which I am so dying to make.. I tried writing a post then deleted it.. I have been hating everything happening around me, and then my friend sends me this link for a film called “Four Eyed Monsters”.. and it makes me feel like a whining idiot..
Susan and Arin , two first time filmmakers decide to make a film on how they came together, they decide to tell their own story, playing themselves, watching themselves with seemingly naked eye.. talking or you can say telling us about their loneliness and their quest to end it.. and making it an incredible filmwatching experience for me.. made by maxing out hundreds of credit cards, almost at the cost of 100,000 dollars, that’s little less than the budget of Bheja Fry.. going to the SLAMDANCE festival, putting it on Youtube, getting more than a million hits in a month, asking viewers to donate one dollar if they feel like it, if they like the film, to help them clear their credit card debts, in the process becoming a worldwide phenomenon, probably a first,, getting a studio deal.. that was inspiration enough for me to stop complaining, for a while..
Brilliant music score, incredibly put together, must watch for all PFC fans..

Anurag… so even after the success smaller films such as Bheja Fry and its predecessors have achieved its still tough for a well-established writer-filmmaker as yourself to get your “smaller” films made? Is it because the concepts are experimental and maybe go over these producers’ heads? Or is it because these guys are still looking for “safe” bets?
Sorry if I’m being overly positive here but both the big films and smaller films are your films… phir kya bade kya chhote… I mean aap ki filmein aap ki vision se ban rahi hai then what else could a writer/director ask for?
badi filmein sab banana chahte hain, chhoti koi nahin
Quite sad… esp considering our audiences are showing they’re ready for fresh concepts regardless of whether the film is considered badi yah chhoti…
After how many big-star movies will you be able to produce your own quality movies? Or you do not want to step into that side of filmmaking?
Wow..music started…i was born..i was born
the way they edited by breaking and creating rules… and their artistic way of communication. yet musically its must watch.. creative all the way. :)>-even their marketing, never heard of or aware of so..feeling dumb..but cheers..!
Anurag… I watched the film and it was wonderful..wanted to say that.. with films like Bheja Fry , Khosla ka ghosla being made…things will work out for you to make the kind of movies u wanna make.
And what’s more brothers and sisters.. the buggers were 23 when they started the film. Time to pull up our socks eh?? And BTW do read this interesting interview of theirs..

as someone said…on a philosophical note… nothing is big or small unless its friday. after friday the big salam-e-ishq becomes small and the small bheja fry becomes big. but everyone doesnt have the guts to beleive in this philosophy.
n argggghhhh…now they have blocked youtube in office!!! some tech problem. hav to figure out a way.
Dear Sir,
What is the budget u lookin at for making your smaller movie? I mean from pre production to marketing?
Phoenixnu,u quoted it pronto. And this Friday could be Good,13th or Black..All in the mind ultimately.
Thank you for reminding me of this film. I saw this film in December thanks to FIlm Independent’s Spirit Awards screenings. It was awesome.
Anurag did you watch it on DVD? if yes did you see their Video blogs with Song of the day? Thats a must watch.

Dear Anurag,
You probably possess the soul of a true artist, and probably of the worst kind fopr oneself, that of the masochist’s! Kuch bhi jo jaaye, aap wohi chahenge jo aapke paas nahi hai; the milestones you cross are not bearers of achievement or satisfaction, they are only the mornings of the next day ahead… those kind of artists live and die unhappy; what is achieved is past, what is to be achieved is future - and the present is only a quest!
While any driven individual may posses that misery seeking soul, your work, your life touches, inspires and ignites so many sparks in others… and while that may be the inscription that you have put on someone else’s life, that makes them follow you on your endless quest, you may just stop running someday, and say (I quote Forrest Gump), “I think I wanna go home now…”
Whether blessed or cursed, we all have something to live for…
Deepest Regards
Anurag is blessed that he is getting to make big films. Thousands will die to be in that bracket. great link..
well hope by posting this on PFC helps them generate enough….the count now stands at $33,000 and odd ….still a huge $67,000 more to go for them……it’s not like one has to donate from ones pocket….they just have to go to this link and join a website.
They get 1 dollar for everyone who joins Spout: http://spout.com/foureyedmonsters
It’s available on u-tube only till the 15th of Aug.

Hi Anurag
Its strange to read this article today… been just discussing with a friend and recently wrote a blog talking about the same thing. Every producer/ corporate and individual wants to make a “project” with me. They all come to me for my first film, but make it clear that they want nothing even remotely close to it is scale/subject or cast… I constantly am trying to figure out a way to make all those “small” films that no one wants to. then i realised why am i so afraid to take risks now. we made My Brother Nikhil when we had nothing. Now I think I will once again try to raise funds from family and friends and make what is dear to me… but yes it is tiresome to be fighting all the time… but it is a path one chose i suppose:)
Anurag Kashyap,
Recently stumbled upon this site and your blog. Wonderful to get to know the thinking process of film makers. Read through many of your entries and the one thing that hits me is your angst, impatience and your chaotic thinking process which make your writings here verge on borderline rambling. But all signs of great creativity. This reminds me of that maverick, brilliant and chaotic writer, Fyodor Dostoevesky. Have you ever read his books ? “Crime and Punishment” with its insights into the psychological and emotional states of a murderer may interest your noir sensibilities.
hey onir,
great to see you here..yes , you are right.. we should stop complaining and do it the way we did it the first time.. neverthe less lets meet up one of these days
yeah lunatic, have read dostoevsky, he inspires me like countless others.. i am impatient and angsty but somewhere that drives me too.. so i guess its ok
yes… lets catch up soon. will call you. But once again enjoyed reading your thoughts… and the other day at the Directors cut it was a pleasure to hear you speak.
Hi Onir and Anurag: I am somewhat confused. In the world of Metro, Bheja Fry, Honey Moon Travels, Back Friday, My Brother Nikhil etc…I don’t understand how small films are not supported…even Bachchan is doing Nishabd and Cheeni Kum…they are not big films? Sharukh is doing Chak de…Yash Raj did Kabul…and Nagesh Kukunoor seems to be rolling film after film after film and never made a “big” film. For an outsider it is very confusing. Kya kahein, best to both of you!
Anurag,
What’s the buzz about Devdas? Please provide us with some inside information.
Hi Anurag, I’m based in LA and run a distribution company, for international as well as domestic programming. I just came across this website…
I also write, direct sometimes produce specials for HBO, Nat.Geo etc.. and collaborate on tons of stuff..
Anyway, an archivist/exhibitor friend of mine in LA has taken over a few boutique theatres for his own curated, permanent series of specialty, eclectic, rare and cult cinema from all over the planet… I’m helping him source prints from Latin America and Asia and would also like to discuss getting some of your films for this endeavour, as well as any other suitable candidates you may be aware of…(I can think of a couple..)
hope to hear from you soon
cheers..
Vikram
Dear Sir,
Please answerrr ,how much money is required??
Confusion… Is it SLAMDANCE film festival or SUNDANCE film festival?
I know SUNDACNCE, never heard of SLAMDANCE.
Just an observation.
Sundance is the big festival that you already know of.
Slamdance runs concurrently with Sundance, in the same city, but its focus is on no budget or extremely low budget films from new directors.
As Sundance became more of a market instead of a place for new filmmakers to workshop, network, and show their product, Slamdance stepped in to pick up the indie flag…
Which is funny as Slamdance is now a respected festival in its own right, and is just as respected as Sundance among indie filmmakers…And distributors shopping for product.
Neither of these festivals should be confused with the third festival that runs in the same city at the same time - TromaDance -
Too bad only Striker will laugh at that one
Thanks for the info t!!
pooja we are talking three and a half for a non star cast film.. absolute newcomers..
hi Anurag
after reading this article…i am energised to write on this…small films mostly independent films are made by filmmakers by begging, borrowing and taking favours…But i think what we need at present is a cooperative of film fanatics who will lay their life for cinema…apart from the commercial outcome…which mostly comes when making ‘projects’…what actually needed is a cooperative of filmakers and film buffs, who can come forward and support good cinema. Earlier NFDC used to do, lot of present good film makers started with…But at present it’s become such a big business that only outcome matters for people behind the business…while none knows which one will bring in money…I think atleast if some support like the basic infrastructure, equipments and post production facilities are provided by these cooperative…people should arrange the locations and get the actors and technicians, who are made profit partners and get their films made if they really want to make cinema…nothing else matters…with the kind of spirit and enthusiasm you and other filmamkers have,i think such a cooperative or film society is possible…
Saw it last night WAS FUN!!
its just another teen movie, if it has been released like a ‘regular’ movie we weren’t making so much out of it. if any one remember a guy once made movie with $7000
I know that this is a discussion of Four-Eyed Monsters but interestingly all of the stuff that Anurag said can also apply to a better example of this genre. I am not sure if you guys have seen MUTUAL APPRECIATION, but I would strongly recommend it.
I think the director (Andrew Bujalski) has a greater control of his craft and has captured a moment of our times in a hopefully-timeless capsule.
Do I sound like a producer of the film? :”> Naah … just a fan of true indie filmmaking. (If you like this one, also catch Andrew Bujalski’s first feature FUNNY HA HA.)
Editor Note (D): Last Warning Sareesh. Please do not use PFC to advertise or spam with your products/services
There are no more boundaries….filmmaking has become as accessible as painting and music is…but only good movies deserve respect.
