My Apprehensions about 3 Idiots and MNIK

On popular demand, I am back with another episode of apprehensions. All that crying, cribbing and openly bashing me up, couldn’t keep me down I guess. I am providing you double dose and inviting double trouble by combing two upcoming big films in the same post. We are not sure how much entertainment we’ll get once the films release. At least, let’s get some of our share of fun now itself.

Why now and why these two films? Second part first, because as someone pointed out when I wrote about Paa, why pick Paa when it’s not the biggest or most expensive film around. Yes, why just Paa and why just AB. And now the first part of the question -it’s because the first trailer for MNIK has just come out and triggered another wave of cynicism in me just like the release of Paa’s trailer did. So here we go.

3 Idiots

I must admit I wasn’t as cynical about 3 Idiots as I tend to be about our so called big films. I was holding back but the endless promotion and gimmicks have started to get to me and I am getting sick of it. As my wife, the best marketing guru in the whole world that I have ever known, quipped, “The worse the product, the more marketing it needs”. Is that the case here? The film seemed good and well made, why over promote it and why play the gimmick of hiding around and helping poor people on camera. Dear Mr. A. Khan, who are you, the benevolent King Vikramaditya? You have gone too far man! Your antics have made me apprehensive about a film I was really looking forward to.
- My guess is they will try their best. It’ll be filmed in a real college campus-IIMB, they will shoot in a real class room and even in a real machine design lab, yet they will miss the mark about what college life in an engineering college looks like. They will focus too hard on the antics of Amir Khan’s character and the campus and the campus life will come across as superficial and shallow.
- Sharman Joshi will act the part and look convincing. Madhavan will be his restrained best. As for Aamir, he will finally overtake SRK. I mean, overtake SRK in overacting ,over exposure and over marketing. Aamir will try a little too hard to look like a college student and end up looking retarded.
- Boman’s character will be nowhere like the IIT Profs we may have ever seen. It’ll be a complete caricature and extension of his Munna Bhai MBBS role.
- Kareena’s character will not be an extension of her immensely likeable performance in JWM. Her character will be an extension of her irritating Bebo from Kambaktha Ishq.
- Everything good that we believed in growing up will be depicted as bad. Discipline, paying attention in the classroom, listening to your Profs and following instructions will be shown as inhuman and wrong. Doing masti all the time, screwing your Prof’s daughter, insulting the Prof in front of the whole class will be shown as cool and classy. After all, this is a film and our Bollywood walah hated school while growing up anyway.
- Hero will act as complete jerk and more like a teen ager from Hollywood teen movies.
- There will be other stereotypes from American teeny movie – a fat guy, a nerdy fellow, a cool guy, some bullies and some bimbos. (I hope I am totally wrong about this one. It makes me depressed just thinking about it already).
- The film will complete with Paa at award functions. Aamir Khan will be conveniently ignored this time, serious role nahi na hai, upar se award function mein aat bhi nahi hai. But Raju will be given joint Best Director with Balki. Some award functions will give Best Film to one and Best Director to another. Maddi and Sharman will be completely ignored for supporting actor because of tough competition with Abhishek Bachchan’s stunning performance in Paa.

Finally, I do want this film to succeed and wish I am wrong and it’s a fantastic film, simply for the sake of Raju Hirani. I truly believe that he can be the modern day incarnation of Hrikesh Mukherjee. But this is a new territory for Raju. In Munnna Bhai series, he was in a spoofish, satirical environment and everything was ok. Anything slightly sentimental and message type, it was lapped up by everybody, cutting huge slack to Raju. Here, for the first time, he has to go real, with three real characters and a real college. I hope Raju gets it and shows the college the way it is in real life, not the way it is in our films.

MNIK

This one is strange. I am getting the KANK feeling once again. The film has been in the pipeline too long, over hyped even before the promos could come along. This week on Star TV, they launched the first promo and to launch it they used the services of who else, but the great SRK. Doesn’t that sound a bit weird to these guys, SRK launching the launch of his own promo and speaking in this out of the world tone, “Aaj mein apko ek aisi kahani sunata hun…Rizwan Khan ki khanai” Please give me a break already. Who is he talking to, 5 year olds? And then, the promo unfolds. It’s about 9/11, done. It’s about terrorism and how not all Muslims are terrorists, done. It’s about KJo wanting to be different, done. So, what’s new? It’s about SRK wanting to do a dysfunctional role, (why, that’s the trend man, .. like super hero films), and what appears to be a cheesy version of Forest Gump type character. This one, I am seriously apprehensive about.
- They will get the disease and the mannerism wrong. It’ll be a cross between Forest Gump, Dustin Hoffman’s character from Rainman and SRK’s old man persona from Veer Zara, anyone remember that?
- The whole terrorism and racial profiling will look stupid, silly and moronically simplistic like in Fanaa, New York and Kurbaan. All the FBI people will be shown as racists and dumb. Some Hindi/Urdu speaking FBI officer will be the only one with brains.
- Everybody will be dressed in designer dresses and will do choreographed dances, including the Asperger patient that SRK plays. He’ll either be dancing in dreams or will forget his disease while dancing.
- Kajol will look ravishing and sizzle on screen, but won’t have much to do. Her character will be shallower than Rani’s in KANK. People would wonder why? K Jo will spiritedly defend, “Why not man..? Why can’t characters be shallow? She is just a shallow character, that’s all.” Huh.
- People would walk out of the theatres with many versions of the key dialogs in the film. Some samples would be, “There are good films and bad films” or “there are good director and bad directors” or “Good actors and good over actors”.
- There will be a gay character and some gay jokes thrown to lighten up the heavy proceedings.
- There will be a cute sardar kid and some old lady with good sense of humor. This time the old lady would be a kind muslim, Zohra Sehgal type. Terrorism ke upar film hai na.
- All FBI and Police walahs will march in choreographed manner and their uniforms will be color matched to SRK’s and Kajol’s dresses.
- KJo and SRK will drag Kajol to every promotion where she won’t have much to say. (Not her fault, she is not a very articulate person off screen). But they will keep brining up KKHH, K3G and DDLJ. Half hour segments will be bought on all the major TV channels. Almost 50% of that half hour segment will be filled with clips of KKHH, K3G and DDLJ.
- There will be some lighter romantic moments between SRK and Kajol where the chemistry will just sparkle. KJo as director would be wondering why didn’t make a film that could continue this scene instead of this serious stuff that would follow that scene. Audience will be wondering the same.
- Ranki Mukherjee will make a guest appearance. There are chances that John Ibrahim and Abhishek Bachchan will make guest appearances and will crack some Dostana jokes.

Finally, I do care about 3 Idiots and want the film to succeed. But MNIK, I am trying my best but not able to conjure up any enthusiasm for this film. That too when, I used to be a big time fan of SRK and Kajol. Somehow the whole thing for MNIK seems forced. Why should we care? Just because K Jo wants to make a serious film to prove his credentials? Just because SRK wants to do the role of a dysfunctional person? Not my problem, man. This seems a case where everything else, the stars, the directors, the premise, the disease, terrorism, even Shibai Bhatija (terrorism expert in Bollywood, Fanaa bhool gaye kya), came first and then a story was concocted around these factors. I hope I am wrong and God save Bollywood!

    @ Singh:

I have no intention of deriding you (please understand that); you have the utmost right to write what you want. If you believe people should speak honestly, I am assuming you won’t take my opinion the wrong way.

Firstly, this article seems to have no purpose. This one seems to have come up just because of the buzz your ‘PAA’ apprehensions created. That one at least had the progeria case, so you could elongate your piece. But this one – especially about 3 IDIOTS, seems completely forced. You are trying very hard to find what ‘could’ go wrong.

About MNIK, whatever you have mentioned has already been discussed in the TRAILER section of MNIK.

So is there going to be a crystal-ball gazing before any big film releases? I am getting a little confused as to what you are actually expecting? An absolutely un-compromised movie? That will win 14 awards in Venice but which the semi-literate and literate public cannot relate to?

Was MUNNABHAI MBBS or LAGE RAHO less entertaining and informative? A NYT reviewer would not even have made head or tails out of it. He/she probably would have categorized the movie along with Martin Lawrence or Chris Farley’s ones. But that story is a product of our culture and our society.

To convey the paradoxes of our educational system, does 3 IDIOTS have to GOOD WILL HUNTING? Do you think a brilliant but a narrative as intrinsic and serious as GOOD WILL HUNTING’s would work here?

My question is that then what are your expectations? Because somewhere you are certain that your expectations would not be met and hence you have apprehensions.

I am no fan of SRK or the KJO brand of movies. But let’s give them a chance. Why jump on to the bandwagon and participate in ‘guilty until proven innocent’ parade?

Regarding your questions that you raised on one of my articles, I have answered you. You could check it out. I think it might partially ease your ‘apprehensions.’

      Aneesh,
I think you are taking it too seriously. If it didn’t come across as fun read, that’s a failure of my writing. You misread my earlier post too. It was not about Progeria. It was all about how a big film is hyped beyond limits and presented as a far superior product than it really is. On a serious note, i think it explained very clearly what i think could go wrong with 3 Idoiots. Munna Bhai was a different format, the character and situations were all comic. 3 Idiots is abour real college students, not about some big hearted bhai going to college. There is also the possibility of Aaamir going overboard with his college kid avatar.
I’ll read yours response to my comment on your post and respond if i have anything more to say.

fun read.. come on guys.. dont take it so seriously. btw, I also feel that no one can do a better marketing than Aamir Khan. He is nowhere to be seen or heard throughout the year, but just as his movie is on the verge of releasing, he will start making right noises about the state of politics, sachin tendulkar, medha patkar, dam issues, terrorism, right to vote and what not. The height was when he once held a press conference out of the blue at his home on some issue on the verge of TZP release. 13. I like people writing a fictionalized take on a film. If ever you care, read this post on PFC about this guy who wrote Smile Pinki’s fictionalized story. I call that creative. You reek so much of cynicism in life. Get some kicks, get a vacation or something. You don’t have to always have your “apprehensions” about a film. You know what, why don’t you take the characters from the promos and create your own version of the film. That should be some innovation. I am sorry your “apprehensions” are neither funny, nor sarcy or both which is what your post was trying to be. Having said that, I do respect your freedom and freewill to write what you like. Popular demand? Really?
The post is ridicilous for the heck of it.
“They will get the disease and the mannerism wrong. It’ll be a cross between Forest Gump, Dustin Hoffman’s character from Rainman and SRK’s old man persona from Veer Zara, anyone remember that?”
Thanks for that. Hideous assumptions, stop targeting a film that’s big in budget, JUST because it’s big in budget, and you want to act like a saviour to small budget films who need reviewers like you to save them. Karan Johar is where he is today, he wouldnt make a film without research and knowledge, unlike how you’ve written this post.
By instigating people on this forum, you’ll get hundreds of comments, and you term that as popular demand. Similiar to what happened with your first post. It’s called being pretentious.

“Everybody will be dressed in designer dresses and will do choreographed dances, including the Asperger patient that SRK plays. He’ll either be dancing in dreams or will forget his disease while dancing.”
Thanks for that. I wish Karan Johar thought like you do, he’d be pelted by tomatoes and eggs. Are you saying this JUST to get someone to smirk? Or maybe you’re dancing in your dreams right now? Dreams for you, a certain nightmare for all of us.

I wouldnt want to quote more of your ridicilously contocted statements that make no sense whatsoever, because your apprehensions give me a clear cut feel, judge everyone by their past. Your past is that post on ‘Amir Khan’, you dont even know how to spell his name. Thus my apprehensions on A Singh. My next post. Cut the pretense, the flat humor, the ego and stop assuming everything.
You’re judging Karon Johar by his candyfloss cinema, and want to sleep, eat and drink and suck your apprehensions, you’re most welcome to. Stop serving it to us.

I’m trying to be constructive with my criticism, but there needs to be a base to construct something on, and this post is completely baseless.

I am more than aware of the immaturity of mainstream Indian cinema in handling serious subjects unlike some here. Terrible past experiences in this regard has led a wide section of audience to follow the “guilty until proven innocent” approach. The onus is on the industry to regain our trust. We don’t pay after we watch movies, we pay before. There is an element of trust-a belief that we won’t taken for fools. Unfortunately bollywood has taken our trust for granted.

3i has the interesting premise. I will be really sad if they screw this one up. As for MNIK, not sure man, but i really am not able to feel enthusiastic about it.

Stopped reading the article after ” As my wife, the best marketing guru in the whole world that I have ever known”. Too cheeky and hypocritical comment for me to digest.

I dont mean to be offensive but I want to say this as I sincerely believe that this is the biggest problem that India is facing today.

I say, hypocritical because most of us take a dig at famous personalities when they appreciate or promote their sons/daughters in public. case in point, when Big B told that Guru is the finest film and AB Jr has delivered a mammoth performance then almost every one of us had labelled him as someone who is indulging in nepotism and accused him to trying to use the media to promote his son. Its looks very likely that you too would have felt the same. And what is it that you are doing now? Using whatever platform you have got to inflate your wife’s credentials.

The bottom line is that we dont care about the wrong doings happening. We just lament that we dont get the opportunity to do that and we happily lap up any such opportunity thrown at us. And the saddest part is that most us dont have the guts to admit this even in private. According to me, most of us Indians have the capabillity and intention to be corrupt and our honesty has more to do with lack of opportunity. Its time we stopped taking a dig at others and do a thorough introspection.

I apologise if I may have have hurt you and it is not my intention in any way. And I dont wish to hizack this thread of yours and divert the topic of discussion either. Its just that I felt very strongly after reading that comment of yours and felt like sharing my thoughts.

Arre baba re..you got it completely wrong dude. My wife is the most unmaketing person in the whole world. She is the least interested in the film promos, but every now and then, makes interesting predictions about the fate of the film that are more accurate than predictions by Taran Adarsh :-) . It was written for humor. I am sorry if the humor didn’t work for you.

My apprehensions about your next article:

You will pick on an upcoming heavily advertized movie(say kites)
    you will say
Kangana Ranaut is going to shriek and shriek more
Barbara M will be a caricatured foreigner
the movie will be aimed at NRI audience
the movie will be grand but lack soul
Anurag Basu will not be able to make another Metro
Hrithik Roshan will just look good and dance well

yada yada…hope you get the drift

A good sense of humour I must admit, but I believe people at PFC are more concerned in bashing the movie all the way .
Liked your article , mainly because even I am looking forward to 3 idiots as a well made movie on our Education system..plus minus pros and cons will be acceptable for me.
However, a weird promotional campaign by AK is making me feel that it is damp squib product . Hope it does not happen , as I have loved the Raj Kumar Hirani cinema , though its only 2 movies old.
But MNIK cynicism is just uncalled for , because KJO has very well classified at pormo launch that it is not a movie based on terrorism . A credible producer/director he is , we can trust him. And offcourse , we want SRK playing some thing different rather than plain romantic hero, after all his performances in Chak De & Swades were commendable . Hope he does justice …Anyways keep it up .

I disagree. I think good movies do get appreciated on PFC. But it’s just that our industry makes lot of crap. Another point, in case of Chak De and Swades, story and plot came first, SRK later. And yes, they make Paa where the lead protagonist is a progeria patient and say it’s not about Progeria. Now they’ll make a film about 9-11 time, set it in US, lead protagonist will be named Khan, and claim it’s not a film about terrorism.

now dat taran adarsh has given 3 idiots 4 stars or was it 4.5 stars 4 days before the release and the over the top promotions only makes me more apprehensive . why a review 4 days before the release?? i have seen that more heavily the film is promoted more unsure the makers are . and this perhaps is the earliest review of any film .
its a hilarious review(if one can call it that) if anyone cares to read.

I liked your post! I feel the same way about 3 Idiots. Aamir Khan has always been my favorite actor but he is really pissing me off by going overboard with his promotions. He should pipe down and let the movie do the talking!!
Also, I really don’t care too much about him playing the part of a college student at his age. It is time to step aside from such roles and give some new young actors a chance.
The only time I ever liked Kareena was in JWM. Her being a part of this movie is already irritating enough and Aamir Khan going gaga over her in interviews just does it for me.

The promo of MNIK was full of Karan Joharish cliches. I am completely in agreement with most of your apprehensions overall! Keep writing!!

You also look like a person who takes criticsm well and you showed a lot of maturity in your comments on the (rough)comments you got! Admire that.
