My Dad is RIGHT…!

We all talk, discuss, debate and fight about movies, and there are great number of movies being discussed on PFC…

Summary

Well, I would like to look beyond for a second…. Beyond the brightly coloured movie posters, beyond the flashing cameras, beyond the multiplexes, beyond the hot popcorn, beyond the spotless face of the heroine, beyond the perfectly sculpted body or steroid induced muscles, beyond the gossip and accusations, reviews and critics

At the ordinary film lover who aspires to make films .like the ones that fires his imagination and enthralls him every Friday…

Lets look at the struggling film maker ,or rather, as our neighbors or relative describes as the” good for nothing” jobless guy ,who is busy watching films all day and scrippling things on to his prized dairy .. or rather as he calls them “scripts”.

He has dreams in his eyes and great ideas in his brains…

He is busy weaving a dream… An entertaining, shocking, provoking, emotional dream …a dream to mesmerize one and all

and the irony of it all ,is that he is stuck in that dreamland , for he lives with his characters and their lives…

The world around him is moving.. Moving at a lightening speed …with people running around minting money or at least trying to…

but this” good for nothing” “wana be film maker” is blind to all the commotions, stuck in the very world he created…

And finally , after months of writing and re writing , the world and dream he created is complete .. and satisfactory….

Its time to bring life to the dream he wove…

Its time to return to the nasty, cruel world, where he is no longer control of his characters or even his own destiny..

He runs from one door to another, in search of that wealthy human being, who is as passionate as himself about the dream he created and also as lunatic, to invest as part of his life savings into his phony dream…

But alas, all these money hungry leeches , tell him ,his dream is too dark, too serious, too boring and the all fine moments in it ,are all superficial…..in one line.. “It’s not commercial”

Our struggling (now penniless) “wana be” filmmaker doesn’t lose hope, like the protagonist in his woven dream…

He knocks on one door after the other, only to be opened and shut back, at the same speed, with unforgiving remarks as compliments…

He returns back to his writing desk… to weave another dream, that’s more commercial, more saleable, with more melodrama, more comedy and more action..

“Look at The world around you, if you are short of inspirations” said some one great some where.

So does our ” wana be filmmaker”

But he is not inspired, but shell shocked …

Shocked to see how far ahead the world and his youth has moved ahead, leaving him and his frail body behind.

He feels like a snail at the Monaco grand prix…

He is so perturbed, disturbed, disappointed, that he feels there’s nothing left for him in this mortal world…

He sits back at writing desk.. And starts weaving his dream….like in the past..

But the only difference this time is, the dream he is weaving, is not be made into a great masterpiece .. but for him to live in forever and ever…

And another mortal, who dedicated his life to the pursuit of good cinema, ends up like a character in this own story….

Well … I sometimes wonder.. will I also end up one day like the thousand “wana be filmmakers ” who live in a dream world of their own … or will I be of the lucky few whose work get appreciated and applauded.

I never know….

But one thing is for sure….. my dad was right….

Always have a back up profession…he said…so you can still live without begging..

I think he is right..

so that when i die ,my grave stone will read .. DR. “wana be filmmaker” and i will have a piece of land to be buried on……

and if I make it big…. a multiplex, by the side of my grave on the very same land….

All in the name of good cinema…

P.S:

1. This article is so depressing and I sound like one of those tragedy kings. but. I wanted to add a few jokes, action, love and sex into this article, but couldn’t ,due to lack of imagination… kindly forgive.

good read but definitely depressing..the same scenario could be projected on a wannabe author,novel-writer..even a sportsperson(though his years of dreaming will be short and one could change gears by late twenties and early thirties and join the socalled mainstream)..i think one has to keep enriching oneself as a matter of habit to make laeral shifts..what say you Shifas..Papa kehte hain bada naam karega or just kehte hain?

krysh,…papa kehta jo bhi kaam karaega , pura dil se karna.. otherwise life has no meaning …. and everything you do ends up like a duty or a job…

    Good piece of advice
otherwise everybody would become a storyteller/script writer

just the other day i was thinking how i should write a story on people like us.. people who have left it all to pursue their dream of making films…. and making good , different films..

if you are intelligent you will do either of the following things:
    1) join some yash chopra camp and end up being a commercial director who makes a lot of money and makes films where all actors wear gucci and armani….

    2) or aspire to be called the sensible film maker and make a film where the producer is sitting on your head each time you open a new tin..

but then you dont want to look foolish so u dont want to make stupid films and then you are stuck there … wanting to make it big ….

one advice i have to give everyone is start young.. beacuse like me if you start at 18 and take ten years to reach a decent place you will still be a young achiever…..
and if you are off it mid way.. you will still be able to appear for the exams you have skipped!!!!
