My joyride in a Time Machine !
Lumiere and his brother would never have imagined the great advances made by the motion picture industry even in their wildest dreams.
From Mitchell Cameras to the latest Arri 535’s & Panaflex’s Millennium series apart from the advancements made in HD technology, we have come a long way in capturing moving pictures!
From the common flip books, hand drawn animation to the latest in computer animation technology, we have taken huge strides in technology!
So what’s in store for us in the future? Say, 50 years from now, how would the cinema industry work? What kind of technological advances one could expect? I don’t know if I would be alive to see that day but I definitely would want to think what can happen!
Will the traditional way of screening films in theaters still be there? Will films be shot with cameras and actors and 40 day shooting schedules? What are the changes one could expect?
Well, I know this sounds crazy but what prompted me to write this article was a dream I had last night. Believe it or not, this was a real dream! I was in 2050’s and I started working in the film industry of the future. I had the experience of the past but somehow, I’ve seem to have missed the in between years of the progress made in motion picture industry. So when I started working on this film project set in the future, the first question I ask a colleague is when do we start shoot and he looks at me weirdly and tells me they don’t shoot movies anymore.
I was surprised! So if we don’t shoot a movie, how will we have a movie on our hands? He tells me to be patient says that as soon as the actors “sign” the deal, I can see everything myself.
So we are here at the actor’s house! I think it was Shahrukh Khan haha! He had lot of people waiting for him and our team approaches him and then they sign the agreements. Then they attach a belt like thing around the hero and ask him to turn, walk, run, smile, talk etc etc which is done in 10 minutes! After that we were done and are on our way back. I did not understand a single thing and again ask my colleague what was that thing! He tells me that now they are going back into the studio and are going to feed all the details into the computer and we can start shooting immediately! I was stumped but was waiting to see what will happen.
So back in the studio, they attach that belt to some device and suddenly, the hero appears on the screen and the director “begins” the shoot! He keys in the location he wants and that appears, he tells the “hero” on the screen what his dialogues are and amazingly, the hero’s character actually starts speaking those dialogues! The director then types in the body movements etc and the “hero” actually does them! Hell, it doesn’t even look like animation to me! I was stunned! Then the director shouts for the heroines data and suddenly another belt comes in!
I ask this friend of mine that if we don’t require the actors to be present, what do they actually do? This guy smiles and tells me that they just sign deals and live a luxurious life!
We had our film ready in 5 days and are ready for “release”! I was expecting a big premiere when I was told that people from all over the world will be attending! But instead, I was taken into this huge room where there was just one screen and I was told people are connecting from their homes to the screen and I can see the 3D models of the audience soon in the hall so they get the feel of watching the movie with other people! Slowly I could see lights flicker and ghost like figures appearing all around, happy and excited to see the new movie of their favorite star!
Whoa! I then wanted to ask my friend where the audience will buy “popcorn” and soft drinks but he was telling me something when I woke up! I then guessed that by 2050, there would be a technological marvel that would enable them to buy whatever they want right from their home! Haha!
So according to my dream, In the future, we would have actors who won’t have to do anything, theatres would vanish and making films would be totally a different thing!

Shankar’s next tamil film ROBO is centered around this concept..i heard!!!
shankar’s film is scraped
no sorry sorry, i was talking about the hindi film which he was to do with SRK.Dunno abt his tamil film…
its the same .. he wanted to do it with kamal hasan some 4 – 5 yrs back … then now he almost got into discussions of doin it in hindi with shahrukh .. and as of now its been shelved !!!
Srinivas… Pls continue dreaming tonight and let us know whether the prices of stars had come down or not, coz bulk deals could come cheap to producers.
what fun making a movie in 5 days!! i need to be reborn :d actually we all will be reborn because we all will die by 2025 due to global warming:d
I guess Shahrukh opted out of ‘Robot’ because he did’nt want to play a star again after OSO :((
Time travel to the future is unheard of in Indian movies,the only time travelling done is from the past( bachpan ) to the present.
In the future nobody would give shit about SRK or anyone else when they could have themselves acting as heroes for their entertainment.
Well, there was a movie in Telugu about Time Travel but they travel to the past actually….Aditya 369 starring Balakrishna & Mohini and Directed by Singeetam was a decent hit too…
Hmmm traveling to the future? The max we traveled to the future (I think) is in Krish (LOL) where the hero checks out the future in the machine invented by his dad!!
But forget about that….How would be movies that would be made in the future? They used to say that India is 50 years behind the US in everything…So in 50 years do we see $100 Million dollar pictures and actors getting paid $20 Million dollar remunerations? I definitely think so? Technology…Well…no one knows….
Dpac people always want to look up to some body…If they make movies on themselves and are the only audience to see it, they would be dead bored by the end of the day!
@machchar:
in the same movie they travel to the future too:d
there was another movie of Paresh rawal in which they travel to past ..cant recall the name though
@Anand Kadam
It was fun2shh, where Paresh Rawal time travelled.
A bad imagination…u seems to much obssessed with computers…if we r that much computrised what will stop us creating our own new good (computer generated)heros than still using the same old and costly heros?
It will be better if u (wake up and)work for taking the industry to a that path rather than just dreaming it going that way. Even sharing information and knowledge(rather than this dream) helps each other grow and a positive thing to write(and do).
Srinivas [ is it a W or a V? ]
I am thinking purely from a director’s pov, how about the eye recording everything that it sees and wants to ‘film?’, No jhanjhat with camera crews and lighting and problems with’translating’ your dream onto a larger canvas: what you see is what you get!

@machchar,
that was not my comment but a friend using my comp..
what i guess he was talking about is a future where interactivity is a big feature of cinema as we know it today.
he wasnt in any way suggesting a scenario where one guy would make a movie for himself with himself as the hero and watch it himself..
