NN Sippy though made “Wo Kaun thee” and “Gumnaam” but he has been a well known producer. He produced some good and successful movies:

1. Wo Kaun Thee(WKT) : NNS produced this cult movie for Raj Khosla. Raj Khosla had made earlier a suspense thriller CID with Dev Anand and in WKT he brought out the eternal beauty of Sadhana. It was a beautiful mystery film. Before this only Kamal Amarohi’s Mahal (Ashok Kumar and Madhubala) was made with such theme. Music by Madan Mohan is another factor to watch this film. Lag ja gale se by Lata adds more material to the suspense in the film. Its a classic film. This film made Sadhna a beauty to watch. Watch her when she says “mujhe khoon achcha lagta hai” with innocent face.

2.Gumnam: Again NNS produced a suspense film. 8 people take shelter in a abandoned home and one by one they are killed. Who is the killer? again fantastic music though this time by Shankar Jaikishan. Gumnam hai koi is a gem by Lata and a song on Helan – kehatee thee kelly is a treat to watch. Not as good as WKT.

3. Chor Machaye Shor – A musical film With Shashi Kapoor, Mumtaj and Danny. Kishor kumar’s Le jayenge le jayenge Dilwale dulhania le jayenge gave Aditya Chopra the title of his first film and which made SRK the king khan.

4.Fakira- again with Shashi Kapoor and Danny (Shabana in one of the few of her adventures in commercial cinema). a hit formula of two lost brothers in the 70s. Songs were good. fakira chal chala chal, ek daal par tota bole etc. In the climax fight scenes under the water were appealing for those days.

5. Kalicharan – Jali ko aag kehte hain bujhee ko raakh kehte hain. This film made Subhash Ghai’s career as director and established Shatrughan Sinha as hero who could give a hit film as a solo hero also. He had become very popular villain by then and anecdote says that when Subhash Ghai got the chance to direct Kalicharan then he was told that Shatrughan Sinha has refused this film by saying that story has no material. Subhash Ghai approcahed again Shatrughan Sinha with whom he was friend from FTII Pune days. Shatrughan Sinha listend patiently story this time and said this story is written for me only. Subhash Ghai smiled towards the producer. Kalicharan is worthy to watch for another actor Prem Nath also. He had become very popular character artist in 70s after Dev Anand’s Johny Mera Naam. And watch Reena Roy and listen Lata in Ja re ja o harjai.

6. Devata – Sanjeev Kumar, Shabana and Danny. what happens when a police Inspector identifies that today’s rich philanthropist is none other than a person who had escaped from his place after getting charged for a murder. Later half is interesting when Danny as police officer tries to get some clue about past life of Sanjeev Kumar from SK himself. Its a good film to witness range of Danny.

7. Ghar: What happens when a happy couple’s life is devastated by gang rape of the wife. Gaspar Noé took shelter in extreme violence and sex in his 2002 Irréversible but in Ghar it took a sensitive side. This is the film which established Rekha as an sensitive actress. Memmorable music by RD Burman, beautiful relationship between husband Vinod Mehra and wife Rekha. If Bhanu Athiya is involved in costume design then its sure that dresses will speak for characters in a brilliant wayBhanu knew how to show the beauty of woman protagonist of the film (watch Amrapali for her brilliance). She gave beautiful Sarees and silki lungi kurta to Rekha and Rekha was just superb in this role. She spread beauty, happiness and love on screen before the rape happens and after the rape her sadness, pathos are so clear by her face and body language that audience move along with her emotions. She has minimal dialogues after the rape incident and emotes through her eyes and body language only. A memmorable scene for the acting ability of handsome Vinod Mehra : when CS Dubey asks him ” Vikas babu, Suna hai 4-5 log the bahut kasht hua hoga bhabhi ji ko”. Vinod Mehra’s emotions are captured so beautifully. In the film Vinod Mehra leaves his rich father’s home to marry Rekha and when his father Madan Puri visits him in hospital where Rekha is admitted then its another scene to watch. Its very touching and sensitive film. A must watch. Gulzar is Gulzar and his combination with RD Burman has always created magic and here also duo come with a compilation which every hindi film lover should keep at home. Million kudos to NNS for producing such a film . Dinesh Thakur wrote story and screen play for this film

8. Sargam – This musical film estbalished Jaya Prada in hindi films. She played a deaf and dumb here. Rishi Kapoor was so befitting in the role. perhaps K Vishwanath’s first hindi film. It was a great success at the time of its release.

9. Ghazab – Dhamendra played double role and comical one is killed and he enters in the body of other Dharmendra. Same plot was later taken in Salman Khan’s Judwa (or Hello Brother?) but here Arbaz Khan played the second role. Dharmendra lived his comic role very well almost like a cratoon character. 1-2 good Amit Kumar’s songs.

10. Meri Jung – Directed by Subhash Ghai. This established Anil Kapur as saleable hero. It was a come back for Nutan as character actress. It was launching of Javed Jaffrey. Though he played villain here and he was very good in this film. He was the first brake dancer in hindi fillms and his song bol baby bol was a rage. He had a voice to supoort him in villaneous role. But later he was swayed away some how from his track. Its a court room film. a good one to watch.

Perhaps Meri Jung(1985) was the last major film of NNS though later he produced Aaj ka Gunda raj (Chiranjivi) and 2-3 more forgetteble films. But if we see his above mentioned films then if he produced 15-16 films then 10 films are major hit and very good films. A good rate for any producer. Atleast 3 of his films Wo Kaun Thee, Kalicharan and Ghar will be remembered always for their theme and treatment.

May god give peace to his soul.

    - Some really good commerical masala… the dialogue “Jali ko aag kehte hain bujhee ko raakh kehte hain” – I thought that line is from Vishwanath, Subhash Ghai’s next after Kalicharan. The rest of the line was “uus raakh se jo barood bane use Vishwanath kehte hain”

Gazab was a copy from a Kamal Hasan movie… not sure about the name… it was something like KalyanaRaman or something similar.

I haven’t been able to watch Ghar completely ever. The scene where Rekha is attacked is where I flip and leave, everytime it is played on the TV or Video.

Gumnaam and Wo Kaun Thi fall under those movies which still remain “fresh” story and plot wise. According to t! one of the club songs in Gumnaam is considered to be a “perfectly” shot song in the history of cinema… but when I saw it, I didn’t find anything of that sort… it looked very… normal.

Meri Jung was the last film that Subhash Ghai did for an outside production. I liked the movie inspite of it going left, right and everywhere in some parts. Still one of Ghai’s better products.

    Oz:
yes, Jali ko aag kehate hain is from Vishwanath.
I was not aware about Gazab being remake of Kamal Hasan’s film. Dharamendra was quite good in comedy role with long teeth peeping oustide of his mouth which later Anupam Kher opted in Chaalbaaj.
Ghar is a good film. Ghar needs a full article, for content, for Rekha’s acting, for music and ofcourse for lyrics. 5 songs and 4 are piece of art from RD if we leave one party song
Botal se ek baat chali hai raat Uda ke kaag chali hai.
Else “tere bina jiya jaye na(lata)”, “ajkal paanv jameen par nahin parhte mere(lata)”, “aap ki ankhon(lata Kishor)” and then a solo from Kishor Kumar” Phir wohi raat hai raat hai khwabon kee.

I loved Gazab…a simple entertainer. don’t think of logic and intellectual while watchin this movie and you’ll love it.a cute film which kids love the most. Salman and Arbaaz in Hello Brother, not Judwaa :) made the film look crass with some horrible antics.
