Nagesh-The Enigma+Casting Call For NK’s Latest
Hi Folks,
This was a post I had written when Nagesh had just gotten a couple of films under his belt (now of course he is the part of Bollywood, albeit in his way and with his sensibility, in fact we almost have a Bollywood reaching out to him as opposed to vice versa) . Anyway read on:
Being a finance person for a living, I believe filmmakers are a bunch of folks who
love wasting resources. Just a little bit of smarts and you can make
a wonderful movie, for a pittance. But the key words here are “just a
little bit of smarts” which seems to be a challenge for most
filmmakers.
ENTER NAGESH KUKUNOOR,
This one time engineer, decides that the best way to learn the art
and science of filmmaking is not to waste hard earned money by
enrolling in some high flying film school (which anyway only makes
you an introspective fool who spends the rest of their lives making
shortfilms and documentaries) but decides to take short , one and two
day courses on films. He is not the only one doing this, institutes
like the Hollywood Film Institute churns out more filmmakers in their
two day course than all of USC and UCLA (at least so says their ad).
So having gained the confidence through these courses Nagesh decides
it is time to make his move.
REEMERGE NAGESH KOKUNOOR,
Everyday in my existence in the Western hemisphere, I come across
folks saying that it is so hard to raise money for films because NO
one is willing to take a chance on them. I go—-well include me in
those NO one’s, cause I don’t slog my backside off so that some
person who thinks his /her idea is the next big thing (that person is
proabbly the only one who thinks that anyway) goes and burns my hard
earned money off. The real creative one’s feel that money is the
least of the issues. So Nagesh, takes a risk ( I love that breed) and
self funds a movie starring himself and a few other novices and
decides to shoot the movie in Hyderabad (hence reducing costs). ALso
the story is hardly a story, more a satire based on a by weekly
vacation that a desi takes to his homeland.
AND HYDERABAD BLUES IS CREATED.
Rough, edgy, a very apparent first timer film, has nothing
going for it, yet it turns the movie world of Mumbai upside down. It
tuns for 31 WEEKS (!!!!!!!!!!…what’s going on, all the Dilip
Kumars, AB’s et all are getting an insecurity complex)-
WHO’s THATGUY.
At the same time a similar movie with bigger stars - Naseer,
Rahul , Tara is released– Bombay Boys, but does not do half as well.
WHO IS THAT GUY???
Once again history is repeating itself. An
outsider is pushing the envelope and getting away with it. Nothing
excites me more than seeing star sons/aspiring models/directors son,
plotting and politicking their carrier in Mumbai and the equation going totally out
of the window because a fresh thinking newcomer decides he/she is
going to take them head on and
LO BEHOLD SUCCEEDS ( I guess I
identify with them….what is he doing here…he is not supposed to
be here). Lanky Bacchan, TV actor Shahrukh, bubbly Zeinta, dusky
Bipasha, insightful Nagesh…are breaking every rule and making a
fool of all those who think they have it all figured out.
NAGESH COMES OF AGE THE INDIE MOVEMENT BEGINS
Despite claims by others, he is the origination of the Indie
movement. Now even old timers like Subhash Ghai are jumping on it.
Nagesh follows up HB with ROCKFORD. A coming of age story of a young
boy, that is what a coming of age story should be, not some
overweight AAMAJII, –Manisha “the drunk” Koirala, in a Shahilal”the
messed up” Nair, Ek Chooti Si ….Crap.
Unfortunately ROCKFORD does
not do that well (I thought the premise was good, but the story slow), but that does not deter
Nagesh, who then climbs into unchartered territory.Like GUDDI (Jaya
and Dharam) years ago, Bollywood Calling is a light hearted satire on
the workings of Bollywood and Om Puri plays a South Indian to
impeccable perfection.
BOLLYWOOD CALLING
So it seems since his next 3deewarein now goes full stream ahead with
Jackie, Naseer, Juhi (does she still act?) and Nagesh. UPDATE (since my original post)As if that is
not enough, he is now become someone whom Bollywood turns too, to get them out of the financial messes,(ahem a certain Iqbal, making up financially, for a certain Kisna, which was a financial disaster, for a certain Mukta Arts)
WHO IS THIS GUY_—– 6 MONTHS IN THE US 6 MONTHS IN INDIA—HIS
CONTEMPORARIES ENVY HIM AND BEHIND HIS BACK WANT TO BE IN HIS SHOES—
-OTHERS LIKE ME ARE IN AWE —HE DEFIES ALL THE ODDS AND ACTUALLY

Is this the one based on Sixth Sense?… no requirement for male actors?
Oz - no idea on the movie. I just got a panic call on my cell and home last night, from his assistant in Calgary, asking me to post and give some names. Have given a few and will post later today at the SAGINDIE website, but because his assistant seemed quite stressed, did not want to ask too many questions, but will do do when things calm down a little. It was my first interaction with Nagesh since Dec of last year, when I ran into him in Mumbai, so not sure what he is upto or what this film is about. Hence not sure about the male actors part. Give me a couple of days and when their immediate issue is resolved will find out.
Tony is in Canada… dude where are you… time to help Nagesh out…
yes..this one is called tasveer…it stars akshay kumra, ayesha takia amongst others..probably the biggest one NK is attempting…three films coming up for Nk…watch out
I somehow think that nagesh is quite overrated and i found dor so boring, flawed and dumb that i feel it should have been shown the door right at the time of its release.
bollywood calling was amazingly unfunny. i was tickling myself but even then i couldnt laugh.
teen deewarein! huh! i think its not even worth commenting.
Iqbal was ok but again over rated.
But I still hope that someday he might make a film which can charm me too. God knows when that’ll happen! May be this is the one…
I love Nagesh Kukunoor’s movies; I look forward to them just because he’s directing them. I watched Hyderabad Blues for the first time just a few years back and I really enjoyed it; even the sequel was good. Teen Deewarein was a very different apadtation of Shawshank Redepmtion. Wasn’t a big fan of his Rockford and Bollywood Calling, but the rest have been very, very watchable and enjoyable.
Vivek, if you have any more details about these short film courses in the US, please provide some information. I might be interested.

I LOVE Nagesh’s films…a class apart! DOR is a masterpiece…
@Adesh, tickling only works if someone else does it.
Nagesh to many like me, who are part of the Bad ugly corporate world tends to be some sort of a cool dude since he did what we all apsire to do but I agree with Adesh’s remarks.
Nagesh is a ok director and tends to pick off films/stories from other languages. Dor was Malyali, Iqbal had a strong leaning towards Goal. His heart might be in the right place but his stories definitely are not his own nor do they have his beliefs
He should really stop copying and also casting himself in every single movie he does.
Oz bhai main yahan hooooon!
Vivek Bhai I’m heading to Calgary in a couple of weeks, maybe sooner… If anything is needed of me you know where to reach me bhai! And as always anything I can do for you I’m here ready and willing…
And oh yes, Nagesh Kukonoor rocks! The first film I saw of his was actually 3 Deewarein… watched it 3 times in 4 days. Spent the next 2 weeks tracking down other NK films, watching Rockford, Bollywood Calling and of course the original Hyderbad Blues.
You’re absolutely right my friend, Nagesh Kukonoor is the father of Indi-Indie-Films…
So many people like ‘Dor’ but I somehow felt it was his worst movie. It was too preachy and everything about the movie seemed so forced, especially the rural accent that the actors tried to put on…
Iqbal was very good (for me), probably because of the sterling performances and the good dialogues which were written for it.
dazed i completely agree iwth you on this one . i dont know how and hwy but so many people consider dor a very good film , for me it was nagesh’s worst , the best being iqbal..iqbal was evrything dor wasnt.
Vivek,
Aptly said….You need to learn “film making”…and need to have “just do” attitude….thanks for stating this so simply….
Also, I wished that they required “male actors” in twenties…..
thanks again brother…
Thanks all, we have recd 84 responses (based on the various yahoogroups and PFC) and are good on this one.
Tony, let me check if they are ok with having visitors on the sets and since you are in Calgary, can pass on their details to you
FOLKS, NAGESH NEEDS A US OR CANADA BASED HINDI SCRIPT SUPERVISOR (TRANSLATE FROM ENGLISH TO HINDI). IF ANYONE HAS THAT SKILL SET AND IS BASED IN NORTH AMERICA, PLEASE RESPOND ASAP!!!!
