NEW DIRECTOR FROM CANADA

One of my friend Raaj Ashoo called me up on 13 march morning that he is going to record a song in MUSICIANS STUDIO,shastri nagar, lokhandwala .The singer was LAABH JANJUA of PAPPE PYAR KARKE PACHHTAYA.I supposed it to be a good chance to meet with laabh janjua as well as all crew members of the team. This team is about an INDO-CANADIAN FILM which is under pre production. One of my good friend ravinder ( ravi ) is the associate director of the film.DEL KALRA,the director of the film ,was found to be very very excited about his 1st song recording. The song was written by SANJAY KABIR one of the talented lyrics writer, having a different approach to the song. The key word of the song is MUTTIYAR, a pure Punjabi word means attractive and heart snatching girl .DEL KALRA entered with his handycam as he wanted to capture all those moments when his dream of making a film is going to be true soon. The film is about a group of typical Canadian boys.Plans have been made to shoot the film partially in Punjab,Mumbai and Canada.
Talking about the difference between Indian and Canadian culture he explained the difference between music and general thoughts of people.Besides multiculturism in Canada is very much different then in India. He decided to make the film in English and Punjabi languages as per the no. of audiences know these languages.Canada is a big market for such English-punjabi films.DEL told about his passion for films. He was associated with New York film academy and there he made few short films.Ramesh sippy is one of Indian directors to whom he like most.
Besides it harmony in the song is given by an emerging young talented singer Vicky.Arrangements of the song was by Sudeep Nandi who also arrange music for PRITAM.At last the sound recordist NEERAJ DA was in the happy mood as LAABH JANJUA had given him excellent dubbed tracks.Over all it was an excellent experience to talk Mr. director DEL KALRA.Best of luck to all your team.

As a fellow Indo-Canadian filmmaker I with Del Kalra (or is that Dal Kalra?) the best of luck.

A film in Punjabi/English should do pretty decent business in Canada, especially out west. There is a large Punjabi community out here. The east is more diverse but of course suburban Toronto has quite a healthy population of Punjabi Canadians as well.

The only thing with his target audience is that he’s limiting his Indian audience to 2-3 northern states (at best) and cutting off a huge portion (like 80%) of the worldwide audience for Indian films (aside from the UK and parts of the US of course).

I’ve been in the same boat with a Punjabi project I worked just last year. Distribution is limited at best, so you have to keep your budgets very low (I was recommended in the 70-80 lacs range). Anything higher than that would make it tough to achieve an ROI.

I was in negotiations with BAG Films for a Punjabi film (seeing as they had produced the Jimmy Shergill starrer “Mannat”, a watchable film). They really liked the concept and script but said the economics weren’t workable.

Seems like Manmohan Singh is the only Punjabi filmmaker who can shoot on a decent scale and make a killing. I guess the YashRaj school of thought has given him the tools to promote his films on a big level and reap the rewards.

I sincerely hope Del Kalra makes a good film and tastes success in a big way. It’d be great to see a successful Punjabi Indo-Canadian filmmaker, and it would pave the way for more of us.

    Good Luck Del-Paaji!

    Hi,
This is Ravi Basera here,Representative of Mr Dal Kalra.
Thanks to everybody for their interest and warm wishes for the project. Thanks to ‘Tony Mera Naam’ for your valuable input about the movie business scenario and correcting Mr Dal Kalra’s name(Param are you listening!)
I want to utilise this opportunity to elaborate a bit on this project.
First of all it is completely a North Hollywood Film with contemporary Canadian sensibilities,as far as the content dealt with is concerned. This film focusses on the cultural landscape of Canada,as it’s a multicultural country.Offcourse Indian cultural influence will be depicted ,together with the various other cultural strands .
The Language of the film is English and tentatively titled ‘Whenever-Wherever’,with the incidental use of Punjabi,Spanish and Italian.
The film is set in mainly Toronto and other shooting locations are Cuba,Rajasthan,Amritsar,Chandigarh(India).
Two songs used in our film, a Rajsthani folk song and a Punjabi party song mark the influence of Mumbai film style in their presentation as it’s synonymous with the popular Indian mass culture all over the world.
We want to leverage the Indian expertise and maturity of Film services market ,both for the benifit of Canadian as well as Indian film industry.
Thanks Param for your effort and hope that in future also you keep abreast Cinephiles about the developments of the project.
Thanks again to all the visitors to this post ,whose interest keeps us bouyant.
    Ravi Basera
