Nishabd - First screening for Big B & crew

It was around twelve noon that i was working on that script evolving the mystery woman, the writer has just reached her office, he was visiting there for the first time that my cell phone blinked thus forcing me to get out of my chair and viewing the message. ” First screening for Big B and the crew at yash raj at nine pm”, the message was from sheel. I was so excited to read that, as i too was going to see the print as i had been missing from the mixing scene for the last four five days.

Immediately, i stopped working on my script, replied to sheel that boss will be there. I had loads of time so i decided to catch up with some friends before i went for the screenings. I tried calling Ashima, wrote a feww scraps to kops and other friends, had my bath and started to leave. Being and AD who has been associated with this film and having seeen the film fifty times i seriously have lost objective about how the film is. Ranuji once had made us hear the background score of the first few minutes of the first reel. He was still working on it. while the film music was being played, i saw him shaking and moving to the tune and enjoying it thoroughly. The monet it was over, his first reaction was “this is what the beauty of filim making, the music has taken it to altogether different level” that was it from that day till today i never heard the background score of the film. After meeting my my friend at her place, i went on to meet another guy finished with him and sent a message to amit roy telling him i was in the vicinity, quick came a reply that i go to thi house “we will go together from here”.

Cut to Amit was getting ready and in the mean time i got my spirits ready and high on a peg of rum that my riend had got from Mauritius. We reach yashraj, there are very few guests… hardly any… just the Ads, writer, music director, sheel, his cousin Sanju, friend Manvi, amrik gillji. Of course kusums dad and cousin too were present. All of a sudden Abhishek comes running towads the canten saying that Amitji has arrived lets go up we are starting the screening. I am more excited to see how the background score has shaped up.

We go up, “amitji shawl odhe huein baithe hain”, next to him is RGV. The film begins and it begins with the promo of shabri… i see Lalit Marathe’s name as the director and think in my mind, one day my name too shall figure there. Everybody is quiet, watching it with full attention. The visuals are very familiar now. I am trying hard to be objective and see the film in totality. It moves on from scene to scene… oh wow, i love the bakground, immediately i realize i am not watching the film but only concentrating on the music. The limited audience who are friends and relatives and to some extent know about the film somewhere seem to be enjoying as i hear people laugh at various jokes that Jiah cracks with all the other characters in the film. I think, its such a different experiecne watching a film with the crowd. As many places where i had not laughed people were laughing, at many places/scenes which i love people didnt even react. I get confused, now there is a point in the film where i felt that the music is not working, but these were the same scenes (most of them) that i had loved without the music. The protagnists had already developed the chemistry by now… they go to the tea estate and there is a point where they sit and talk… initially at the edit stage or dubbing its the place where i had thought “ke this scene has a great scope for background” but I am pleasantly shocked to see RGV leave the entire scene on dialogues…. and it worked, it worked at i felt a strange kind of quiet in the audience. I remember his words,”thats the beauty of filim making”. I think there is something to learn here… i go through the same emotions of what is good and what is bad… i am being very unfair to the film… i cannot see it the way a film is supposed to be seen. As we reach the interval….

Cut to outside the theatre… people are busy having snacks… RGV with his vodka glass… everybody is talking… i see amit slightly not being himself. I ask him boss what?. He is not happy with the projection… i ask what does he mean… he explains me saying something to the effect of it being more brighter by one light… I dont understand him, but realize that there is some major thing. He gain explains it to me saying that it shuold be looking more brighter… but its i guess the projector that he explains to me… i decide to ask him again. I meet Kusums dad, “uncle how are you finding the movie so far”, uncle “humko abhi bohot slow lag raha hain”. “But is it working for you uncle?”, “its, just that i am finding it a little slow.

Cut to Prasanna the music director, he is teling Amit that he has loved the visuals so far, thus leaving me further confused as to who to believe? There are some guests from south who too are watching the film, they busy chatting with RGV. In the mean time, Amiji comes out, its the first copy, he has some suggestiongs and querries… he calls for Kunal the sound designer and tlaks to him. I dont get to hear them, but with his gesture i assume that its something to do with either mixing or sound design. They assure him to follow up with him and do the corrections immediately. That means tomorrow again they will have to re master the sound and print new copies with the new suggestion, thank god there is still time. Jiah mom too is there, there is a kind of happiness on her face and why not, its her lovely daughters debut film. she looks conent.

We go inside, the film begins… and the film ends i just do not realize when it ends… I think “WoW” than what is it that made me think of so many technical things in the first half of the film? Amitji and RGV are talking, we wait for him to finish with Amitji. His Vodka is still on. They finish, Amitji has left, RGV again goes upstairs and continues his conversation with his guests. We wait, theres no sign of him coming down. Ashok his right hand man comes and tells us that looks like its gonna be a long session, no point waiting. We all leave, straight to Pop Tates. Sheel ditched, so its me, Amit roy, LAlit Marathe the director of ‘Sabri’, Vikas our AD and Kanishk RGV’s chief on Sholay. I ask Lalit in the course of our conversation that how did he liked the film? “Surya its very gripping in the second half, it just doesnt make us feel how the time goes by” “ok, i see, i agree with him” i think.

Cut to Amit Roy is talking about soemthing that Amitji told Ramuji, which ramuji later told Amit regarding Big B feeling that his face seems to be in dark and not seen properly. I ask him, what do you think? “I think its a great visual of photograhic excellence and one of my best”. Though to be frank, i too loved to see just one side of Amitji’s face lit and the other a little dark, an example of great lighting. But again… various people various opinion. We say good bye to each other from Pops, i want to write and share my feelings with my fellow pfcites, thinking that when you all will see it, it will be the honest and genuine judgement. As far as we are concerned, each and every member including our spot boys have put in their best in those twenty days of hard work that all of us have put in…. 2nd march the film is coming to you all… all said and done, my opinion is going to be biased, i love the film for various reasons… now its upto you all to express yours and share it with all.

In fact just yesterday was discussing this with oz, the child-like enthusiasm that comes out in your blog makes it so very honest and dedicated. Boss…will love to see cinema from you someday. Oh well, i just hope that it plays at my local cinema, nahin toh i’ll have to get a bloody train to a place that does!!!

Really can’t wait for the movie now.. but i have to ask you… does the film shock at all??

  4. surya on February 26th, 2007 9:32 pm

Steve Dearest no the film i think doesnt shock, it rather justifies Amitji’s love for Jiah in the story… i am saying this because you will realize it in the last monologue of the film.

OM - Thanks buddy, the film is gonna release and it was really really nice to share my experiences with you all. But do you realize this has left all of us jobless till the time we get another project, either as an AD or an independent project. Lets see when my film happens, though i am workinh hard towards it.

Striker Boss - Yes the clock has started clicking…

  12. surya on February 28th, 2007 12:44 pm

    Hey CC,
Hi dude, how ya doing??? thanks for your comment. Maybe you are just right and we all are wrong. what you say might be absolutely right. But Nishabd was an effort that we all put in. I cannot deny my association with the film as we all worked very hard on this film. Though i seriously do not agree with you tha Kaun was RGv’s best… there was naach and there was sarkar too… that is what i personally think. What i find interesting is that you atleast find important enough to make a comment on. I think even i will be at Pop Tates on the release day… cheers…

  13. surya on February 28th, 2007 12:47 pm

Phoenixnu… nahi re AB ke saath kuch jyada baatcheet nahi ho payi… he and RGV were too busy chatting after the screening in one corner of Yashraj studio… i think both were discusing Sarkar 2.

    Nidhi - Shukriya mam….

  14. striker on February 28th, 2007 1:09 pm

somehow the idea of RAMGOPAL VARMA having a screening at YASHRAJ studio.. it seems almost… what’s the word i’m lookin for… :-b ironic..? oxymoronic..? paradoxic..?? arghh.. ironic it is.

  15. kishan on February 28th, 2007 6:28 pm

    Surya…
thank u so so much for this blog. U know.. I have always been a big big fan of RGV since my childhood and I always loved to know every single thing abt him.. I search by his name atleast once a week on the net.. and read everything that is there…

I would give anything to be atleast a spotboy in his team.. but how do I say this.. may be I dont have guts or I dont want to hurt my family members.. I became what my parents wanted to become..

When I read your posts abt working on sets with RGV.. I feel like ..this is what i always wanted to be…

anyway…even if you get succesfull or not …the very step you guys took to pursue ur dreams is worth appreciating…

I would love to hear more on ur experiences ..and anything on RGV…

  16. Phreek on February 28th, 2007 8:57 pm

I remember once Anurag K telling in an interview
“RGV is very demanding…..dont remember..RGV doesnt need Anurag Kashyap, but Anurag Kashyap needs RGV..

Can you at some point of time write “YOUR VIEW” on RGV? Like the good, the bad, the ugly and ofcourse the genius?

  17. surya on February 28th, 2007 10:34 pm

    Hi Phreek,
Yes, he is very true, and Anurag even knows RGV better than i do. My association with him has never crossed apart from me being his ad. So it has been only related to our shoots, never ever really interacted with him on a personal level, so i don’t know him as to what kind of a human being he is, but as a boss working with him was the most richer experience. And everybody knows the genius he is. Ani think even today Anurags words stand true and it apply’s to most of us ADs, Actors, Technicians as RGV doesnt need us, We need RGV.

  18. Phreek on March 1st, 2007 8:15 am

    Thats the point!

Today there was a show with RGV,Amotabh on CNN-IBN and the anchoring was so bad, she screwed it up, and RGV still sits in the same posture- I dont give a fuck, I am what I am.

  19. Phreek on March 1st, 2007 9:48 am

    Also,

Would you also write up on how it all(you becoming RGV’s AD) happened?

  20. Yingchuk on March 1st, 2007 11:07 am

    hey surya
i don’t think that you should take in Amitji’s comment on how his face looks darksided on other half of his face. I haven’t seen the film, but i am sure the lighting will look great if that is how you described it in the blog. Amit ji should have seen the dark-light as the dark side of him having a relationship with a girl who could be his daughter or even grand-daughter. So, good job with the lighting.

  21. CC on March 1st, 2007 10:45 pm

    Hi Surya,
Thanks for your comments apropos my comments. I was just expressing my point of view and no way trying to prove a point. I hope am proven wrong and Nishabd rocks. Again I didn

  22. surya on March 1st, 2007 11:21 pm

    Hey CC,
Hi, Good to hear from you again… yaar, its absolutely fine, we are in a democracy and you have all the right for an opinion, so you really don’t have to justify your thoughts beyond your expressions about any cinema… this is the same reason that in my last reply I said that you might be absolutely correct in whatever you have said.
Rest all is well, happy holi to you in advance.
Cheers!!! and thank you for all your best wishes they mean a lot to me.
