Nishabd in ‘Flavours’
Guys,
Apologies for not writing for so long. Have been too busy with the last minute postproduction job on the film. Yes, Jiah was the first person to start dubbing; we got her and other actors dubbed at Sri Lakshmi Studio at the Laxmi Industrial estate. I remember my first meeting with Jiah in Ramuji’s cabin. From there to now I must say guys Jiah has proved me wrong again and again and again. Initially I felt, “yeh phirang itne heavy accent ke saath hindi kaise manage karegi?”, but there she was, on the sets always rehearsing her lines with me till she got it right. She put in her heart and soul while we were shooting. One day I remember she fell ill, Sheel had to take her to the hospital where she was put on a bottle of wine, oops… just kidding, I meant to say glucose. RGV shot without her for a day. We were shooting with other stars. Before the shoot started Jiah started taking Hindi diction lessons from the very sweet Veenaji. It was a deal that while dubbing Veenaji will be present to ensure that her pronunciations are correct. We had a great time dubbing and of course having breakfast together after or in between the breaks of our dubbing sessions. Yes, Jiah dubbed in the morning, we use to start at eight am or nine am and go on for an hour, two hours depending upon the energy she had. It’s a painful task to do so. We must have dubbed with her for close to seventy hours or so. Of course we dubbed with Revathyji also, she was flown in from Chennai to dub her portions. She must have finished it in two to three days (I am mistaking Revathyji’s days, must be a day more). She was superb, and As far as Jiah is concerned I must say that Kunal our sound designer did a commendable job, Jiah wouldn’t have sound any better. If you hear her in person you d rather prefer to listen to hear her on screen. She doesn’t speak much Hindi in real life. But a sweetheart. Abhishek too is handling the Post Production job very well. He rocks… he is a dude. In fact whatever little bit of knowledge I have in terms of postproduction, it’s due to him. As during Naach he literally used to drag me to come and sit in the studios. Whether it was dubbing, effects, pre mix, mixing everything… all the credit goes to Abhishek.
Cut to Shraddha, the beautiful screen daughter of Amitji, she too dubbed at Lakshmi and she was equally good. In fact all were good, except for Jiah… as in it took a hell lot of efforts on her part to get her part right, and she did. I love her for her commitment towards work and neither did she ever complain when Kunal used to get her do the re takes again and again and again for as simple as one word in a sentence. It was Amitji who due to Abhi and Ashs engagement and his other commitments took some time to complete his dub, plus I also remember him telling Kunal that “The film is a difficult film to dub” as a result he used to dub not more than a scene or two each day. Due to his family commitments he canceled the dub not less than seven to eight times. But guys it was such a pleasure to see the man himself dub, please don’t miss the breaths and huffs and puffs, the lip sounds… everything the man wanted the way it was done while shooting. In fact if he thought he never got it right or if Kunal wasn’t sure about any take no matter how long the scene was, he used to do it all over from the beginning. And that was such a treat, “kab dekhne milega yeh sab wapas, ram (u) hi jaane, woh bhi agar woh mujhe doosri film mein apne saath kaam karne lega toh. Sala uss scene number 55 + 56 ne toh meri…. samajh gaye na main kya bolne ki koshish kar raha hoon?”.
There are close to seven monologues in the film where in Amitji is talking to us. Now that day we finished our day scenes around four thirty pm. These monologues were supposed to be shot at night and we had rain also to be co coordinated. Amitabh Bachchan, you wont believe has three days prior to this shoot had taken the dialogues with and was reworking on it. In fact it wont be an exaggeration on my part to say that he literally wrote them and kept practicing and thinking over it, in terms of how he would deliver them.
So its four RGV has decided the location where we are gonna shoot these monologues. Amit Roy has almost finished his lighting. Tiger is on the prowl. He is impatient, walking up and down… asking us ads “ready?” “No sir, five minutes”. Cut to few minutes later he spots Amit Roy not doing anything and asks him, “Amit what’s the delay? Why aren’t we shooting?” Amit, ” No sir, we are waiting for it to become dark sir”, RGV impatient that he is, ” but why is it not getting dark?” Roy and us exchange looks. Amit, “its just happening sir looking towards the sky”. RGV, “hmmm, ok”. I feel wish aasmaan ka day aur night filter ka button mere paas hota, RGV ko tabhi ussi waqt night filter kheench ke raat bana deta. But all of us behind his back obviously had a good chat about his impatience.
Aaah… finally boss is on the toes, it’s dark, by now the rain machines have been checked, there is enough water to last for all the monologues. RGV asks us to go and call Amitji. One of us, I think Abhishek goes to call him and returns back saying he is coming in a bit. Its ten minutes, twelve fifteen, don’t forget we didn’t get network in the place where we were shooting. RGV continues to be impatient in continuity. Its half an hour, he has already checked with us thrice before if we have called him? “Yes sir”, “but what’s happening? Why isnt he coming?” “Sir he was doing something with the scene papers, probably writing on it etc”, RGV, “hmmm, let me go and check”. Cut to he comes back and his first reaction is “fuck man, can you imagine, Amitabh Bachchan is rehearsing his lines inside the vanity van”. And why not, he must have done so for at least not less than two and half-hours. He came to sets by nine thirty; sat on the chair that he himself had finalized seeing which chair he was more comfortable in while performing. He starts rehearsing; there is pin drop silence. This is also the day after the scene 55 + 56 episode. By nine pm we actually begin to roll, and guess what within less than two hours we have packed up, all seven monologues done, ok. When you see the film, you will realize what the big deal about that was. In between whenever he felt like something was not right, he used to force RGV to do the shot again. RGV used to say ok Amitji, if you want to do it we will do it, but I am completely ok with it. One thing to see was the chemistry between them. It was superb. One a perfectionist, other the most impatient person. So Amitji used to rehearse, while RGV was busy having his vodka and me too without his knowledge having mine in a steel glass, just trying to get out of scene number 55 + 56.
So RGV finished the entire film in 20 days. After they all had left. Amit Roy and we Ads, shot for one more day all over Munnar and surrounding areas. We exposed all the remaining ten cans of the stock and it was so much fun. Hum logonebhi jib wib sab ghumaya, and shooting with Roy has always been fun. Why shooting only? Even while playing Dumb charades we rocked. The team of Abhishek, Amit and me was unbreakable. If whoever gave us tough fight at all, it was from Aditya our intern. It was so much fun, after pack up we use to either play at tea county (we does not include me and abhishek, as we were busy chasing RGV to sign the call sheet), or have quick drinking sessions either at Prakash jimmy jibs room or aparna’s room at Isaac residency.
Right now, Amar Mohile is busy doing the background score, and the film is at ‘FLAVOURS’ Leslie’s new mixing studio, which is more like a home than a studio. It’s a cozy place ke once you enter it, satisfaction guaranteed. The pre mix of dialogues is over, he is busy pre mixing the live effects, Amar has finished the background score for three reels and tomorrow nights we will begin premixing the music. So this is where as of now Nishabd stands.

Surendra:Thanks. your tales about Amitabh Bachchan’s hard work and involvement in his work are very interesting.
hi RK - thanks bro. Its really humbling to see an actor of Amitji’s stature behave like a new comer, so anxious, so excited, so professional, so down to earth, so grounded, always trying to better things, so polite, so level headed. There’s so much to learn from him. Especially for people like us, who will be sooner or later writing, directing, shooting… Once we were shooting rig shots on the roads of Munnar. Being a hill station it was very difficult for us to travel with his Vanity van, and there were two different scenes which needed costume change. RGV announced next scene and Amitji was suuposed to get into new costumes. Now we were in a soup, cutting the story short, AB realized, and what he did was he quietly went behind the jeep, changed his costumes and came back ready for the next scene. Jiah for this particular scene changed her costumes in a small van that was carrying the food for the entire unit.
His devotion and passion are the obvious reasons behind his command over the craft and his strong position ine heart of the viewers. I sincerely hope RGV does something extraordinary with the film as he has got country’s finest actor. Eagerly waiting for the film.
RK - Hi again, i think you will like the film. Don’t know about the box office, but it will go down as a good film. And not to forget Jiah, she is good, very very good. She will go a long way if she chooses the right kind of scripts.
Surendra: you seem to develop a soft corner for Jia;)
Well when she is in film industry and is starting from a production house like RGV’s factory then it shd be nice training for her to develop scriupt sense. Moreover who knows you direct her in your own film:)
it’s like u’re writing a story boss… saving the best (55/56) for last.. kahani mein twist hone wala hai.. i like it.. besabri se intezaar hai…
the song is amazing…….
Surya…a good post..It is really heartening to know that you guys have fun after such hectic shoots. Would love to play Dumb-Charades with you someday..I am the undefeated king of it..;)
Hi!
I am ahuge RGV fan and am very saddened to see an article on the web that his company is not doing well and he is not paying his workers. Is this just rumours or is it true? As a telugu person, I am very proud of what RGV did at the national level that no other south Indian could do - even Manirathnam for that matter and I hope this is all trash talk.
article is at: http://www.planetbollywood.com/displayArticle.php?id=021407092032
RK - Yes i do have a soft corner fro Jiah, after all she is such a hot looking girl. Of course we will be working together one day.
Striker - Just wait and watch.
Vasan - Yes Revathyji was good fun to work with. It was like whenever they were together, things just went off smoothly.
Om - What are you saying? bohot competition hain bhai… even in dumb charades, ha ha ha.
Sai kumar - I have worked with RGV for the last four years, and never ever has my cheque bounced or was in a situation where we did not get our salaries. Yes delays might be possible, but RGVs company not doing well is all bull shit. Else why would he be making films after films yaar? And if he is not paying money, how come technicians are still working for him? How come he gets all the equipments that he needs for his shoots? Everybody has good times and bad times in ones career, RGV is no exception yaar.
erm, why have you guys gone for dubbing, erm, would not have sync sound been better since the filming was in a remote area?:-?
“feel wish aasmaan ka day aur night filter ka button mere paas hota, RGV ko tabhi ussi waqt night filter kheench ke raat bana deta” LOL…
HG - U are absolutely right and we were supposed to do a synch sound. BUt RGV is used to telling actors what to do, tell the cameraman to pan, tilt etc… on a mic. So thats why we changed it to our usual way of shooting.
Baarish - Just kidding yaar…
(huh-le-lo) you guys should have gone with sync sound, so the film would have released by now and we would not have been guessing what’s the ending of Nishabd - anyway, any hints? ;-)
i thought rgv does not prefer sync sound; i do not think he has used it before has he?
my other half comment didnt get posted :(( .. anyway i have a question u mentioned “he canceled the dub not less than seven to eight times” doesnt it cost extra when an actor does that???.. its interesting that AB ‘literally wrote’ his dialogues… i guess it works the best and sometimes gets easier when an actor gets under the skin of the character..
Wow sounds like an intresting movie…
Surya, you are making the film even more intresting by posting its making and behind the scene.
I felt like i was reading a story.
Lolita (Jeremy Irons) was a great movie, but it was a Hollywood movie. Now im eager to watch Bollywood version, Nishabd. Keep it up, great work.
HG - Yeah he tried it once before, but again realized that its much easier fro him without the synch sound and resumed back to nagra. What happens in the end is Shraddha goes his daughter goes back, and in the next vacation comes with a guy friend and this time Revathy falls in love with him and they this time they become ’stabdha’. ha ha ha.
Baarish - We have a deal with the studios, and knowing AB’s work schedule, everybody happily adjusts for his dub. Plus he mostly dubs either at Sound city or at Yash raj studios.
Poonam - The only similarity between that lolita and Nishabd is the age difference.
ahh.. that explains, thanks surya.. again a great post!!!
Thank you too baarish… chal have to sleep now have a long day tomorrow at ‘Flavours’.
i suppose i’m too spoiled with shooting in sync sound.. it’s too distracting/annoying to have the director direct during the take.. so much easier to just be told what to do before the camera rolls.. but i’m guessing AB doesn’t need that step-by-step direction from ramu, right? i’m sure jiah would..
aye sambhe!
for me ‘nishabd’ rocks big time! me thinks
mr.bachchan in ‘nishabd’ is much better than his own performance in ‘black’..
tomorrow i’ll be watching ‘eklavya’ with gang(surya, i know you and abhishek are busy with work, but we are definately meeting in the night for a drink and ‘eklavya’s’ post-mortem..very sure you’ll enjoy that bit!! what say PM servant? ha-ha!)
by the way i’ve this latest info that boss might have a surprise in store for the ‘nishabd’ audience..did you just ask, what?? well, it’s a ‘teaser’ of a question!
ask me no questions..and i’ll tell you no lies!! coming soon!!!!!!!(not one, but two!!)
HEy Striker - As in he doesnt disturb them while they are saying there lines or anything, but usually he has the habit of directing the cameraman in terms of panning, tilting, asking him to keep rolling just to capture emotions even after the lines are over. eg - “thats all” is the last dialogue of ‘Nishabd’, now initially that was not a part of the dialogues. Amitji was on his last monologue, the seventh monologue. He finished his lines, and RGV refuses to call for a cut. Amitji kept going on and on with his performance till the time he realized that RGV is not calling “cut”, he summed his performance by adding and also hinting that call a cut now by saying “thats all” and RGV has put that in the edit too. Isn’t that interesting?
Sahil - Brother, Would have loved to see eklavya with the gang and bang our heads over it. But work is getting more and more stresful as we are heading towards final mixing. And what is this surprise you are talking about? Should i ask Ramu? Drink pakka… where at POP TATES? Happy hours?
Thanks Surya, reliable as ever!
Im with Vasan Bala re ‘Rozana’ man!!
What a track!
Absolutely fantastic! I have played it non stop since last week… its instantly likeable and addictive.. I guess it’ll just be part of the bgm??
Sadly i dont feel the same way about ‘Take Lite’!!
Infact there are echo’s of ‘dola re dola’ from ‘Devdas’ in it!!
Thankyou again.. can’t wait for the film now… hope it has a bloody UK release!!!
Surya, ye 55+56 ki kahani kab khatam karega bhai?? Chewing gum ki tarah tu to isse khinchta hi ja raha hai….ab bus bhi kar de yaar. Pakka promise karta hun…55+56 ke baad bhi tere baki posts zarur padhunga…ha ha ha.
BTW, saw Jiah Khan the other day…on some news interview. She looks very differnt n not that great. May be she looks good on camera. About the song rozana….i was expecting something terrific…Vishal + Ab + Ramu…think its just good. Nothing great.
Hey Phoenixnu - I fully respect your opinion bro, 55 + 56 ke baarein mein bhi bataunga, jaldi kya hian mere bhai?
Hey steve - True ‘Rozana’ rocks absolutely…
Surya….if you mention scene 55-56 the next time and not tell us what it’s about…..God help you… b-(
Saahil,
Let me venture a wild guess: Nishabd will come with the Sholay teaser. That, in itself, is blockbuster news! But you hint at yet another teaser. I’ll admit
I’m puzzled. It can’t be Sarkar 2, since it’s too early for that, and besides it would be an off-putting Bachchan overdose for audiences. Perhaps the Fardeen-Esha “Darling”?
Rainbow dearest - Swear, god help me, what the f… is scene 55 + 56 is all about? ha ha ha. Keep guessing beautiful lady.
Sarkar - So many guesses? ha ha ha. Just back home from the music release of Nishabd… obviously drunk, ha ha ha.
hey phoenixnu
you really know how to upset a girl…shame on u.
now im gonna cry for days….
sarkar,
dont wanna ‘tease’ you any further..it’s SHABRI!
it’s got some stunning visuals..looks to be one hardcore film!
jiah,
hi..surya speaks very highly of your talent and the hard work you put into your work..sincere effort always pays off..wish you luck for ‘nishabd’ and thereafter..and many happy returns of the day!
Saahil,
Uh oh. Never thought of Shabri - for some reason I was only thinking of RGV-directed movies.
[Admin Note - Deleted as this is a duplicate comment]
Aargh! Readability has gone out of the window.
Let me try reposting.
Saahil,
Uh oh. Never thought of Shabri - for some reason I was only thinking of RGV-directed movies. Thanks for divulging this information, Saahil. Your comment
about “stunning visuals” excites me. RGV-bhakts like myself live for those. Everyone say with me: Amit Roy is now the country’s most thrilling
cinematographer! In a career filled with visually impressive movies, Varma has never made one more resplendent than Sarkar (now you know where my nick comes
from). How will the stylish Mr. Roy shoot something so grimy and downmarket as Shabri? I can’t wait.
On that note, since the operatives of the Factory appear to be in a very giving mood today, please allow me some pressingly urgent questions:
1. Who is/are the cinematographer(s) for Varma’s Sholay and Sarkar 2?
2. Will “Darling” ever see the light of the day?
3. What went wrong between Varma and Mohit Ahlawat? Reading between the lines of Varma’s “post-breakup” interviews, I get the impression that Varma was just
not seeing the preparation or commitment from Mohit that the former expects of his actors. This is odd because Mohit has clearly worked very hard on his
physique, so he seems like a dedicated and ambitious chap. Why then would he be indifferent towards Sholay, his biggest project at that time? (Yes, kill me
for this, but I’m that rare creature - a Mohit-fan. My rationale is simple: We need tall ass-kickers onscreen in the post-Khan era. Amitabh and Abhishek are
not enough, and are overworked and overbooked. Also, the expectations from these members of the “First Family” are of a different order. At this point,
viewers want Blacks and Gurus from them, not Ek Ajnabees or Zameens. With Mohit evicted out of the Factory, devotees of action - action with some style and
substance, mind you - have nothing to look forward to. Prashant Raj does not quite cut it, although one will need to wait for the release of Sholay to
decide, of course. There is some talk of Mohit teaming with Ramesh Khatkar, who’s also a Factory alumnus. Read http://www.santabanta.com/cinema.asp?pid=13393
if anyone’s interested. Hope it all works out for Mohit as well us action-fans.)
Jiah, how would i know that u will come to pfc n then read each n every comment. So, if u r feeling bad, then i am sorry. But if u r going to cry for days…then cheer up now cz this so called place called bollywood will give u many bigger reasons and better point of view from many bigger people to make u cry. Dont waste ur tears on my point of view…are mazak kar raha hoon yaar. U r one of the luckiest…first film with Ramu n Big B. Dont remember if anybody got anything better. Waiting for ur film n all the best!!!
sarkar,
looks like you really take a keen interest in the ongoings at factory..very curious, huh?
amit roy is the cinematographer for ’shabri’..
he could be on ’sarkar 2′ as well, but nothing is confirmed yet..
‘darling’ is in the post-production stage..also need to shoot a song (maybe two)..
dont know when RGV plans to release it..right now he’s caught up with ’sholay’..
what went wrong between RGV and mohit ahlawat is between them..you’ll have to check with either of the two to find the answer..
cheers!
wow
