NISHABD – “SURYA WET HER MORE”
Surendra Hiwarale | Movies | January 27, 2007 at 7:59 am
By now the shoot was happening with full speed. Amit Roy and gang were bang on in synch with RGV’s supersonic speed of shooting. The production department, the art department, direction department, in fact all the departments were superb and extremely efficient under Sheel’s leadership. Plus having RGV at the helm of affairs ensured that there were no fuck ups or less fuck ups. But just tell is there any shoot where there are ‘NO’ FUCK UPS? Adiyta my Intern, in spite of me telling him not to carry hajjar papers in his hands continued to do so. Aparna’s assistant Sachin, later on her jilted lover as we used to tease her, I mean who had come on the shoot as her assistant ended up being somewhere in between. A very talented guy, he was with Praveen now Vishram Sawant of D and RISK. He assisted him and god knows how he landed up in Munnar being Appu’s Assistant. One fine day this jilted lover showed RGV a poster he had just designed on his laptop. That was it; “Superb” RGV got new ideas in his mind. He shared them with Sachin and asked him to keep working on new designs. Sachin too saw good scope for himself in doing so; as a result he ended up being Aparna’s jilted lover. He was unable to concentrate on the art department’s job. As in between the scenes when the rest of the art department was busy setting up the set, Sachin used to be busy showing RGV the poster designs. This at times really pissed Appu off. But neither of them had a choice as Sachin wouldn’t have asked RGV to see it later, neither would Aparna have asked RGV why he is not letting her utilize his services for what he has been brought here for? Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha… I am still laughing remembering that whole episode, as Amit, me and many of my dudes from the crew kept teasing Aparna saying that now he is your jilted lover. Though I must mention Sheena’s name here as she stood rock solid behind Aparna and handled the entire show very efficiently.
Late evenings were spent for Abhishek and me mostly waiting or tracing RGV to get the next days call sheet signed and occasionally playing table tennis in the recreation room at Tea County. It was a superb way to unwind. One fine evening, and rare ones where we got to see a completely different side of RGV’s, yes we were discussing some days shoot and I really tripped on this one jimmy jib shot that he designed, I mentioned this to Kusum and she probably told him. I told him how much I liked that shot etc and while we kept discussing he just started remembering his good old days. Kusum our writer just happened to narrate one incident that happened. We were shooting a scene in a Shop where both Amitji and Jiah were required. Amrik Gill the dialogue writer is playing the Shopkeeper and RGV had offered this pivotal role to Sheel our EP, who happily refused. Anyways, while shooting there Kusum observed that Amitji was noticing the prices of the products kept there. She narrated this incidence to us and RGV just went on to remember days when he was not a filmmaker. He told us that his first salary was 800/- rupees and after stepping into the film world when he took up one assignment as a scriptwriter, he told us this producer had called him to a five star hotel for a meeting. RGV’s biggest highlight for remembering this meeting was the coffee bill in that five star hotel which was five hundred rupees and a little more than half his salary that he was earning in his previous job. Later on, the discussion went on to how even today he notices the cost of these little things, and how he finds it difficult to digest the whole thing of pricing and how he is good at saving a few hundreds and thousands, but cannot control lakhs and crores… which he said he has never seen, because the figure is literally virtual thing for him. Both Kusum and me were quite surprised to see this side of RGV as its very rare that we get to be in that kind of space with him.
One more incident is that of a place where we were shooting at a cliff, Amitji was supposed to reach at eleven am. The entire unit was there by 8:30 am itself. RGV too came at around nine thirty or so. The setting boys were busy fixing a platform at the edge of the cliff to put the jimmy jib, so we had all the time. The discussion went on to the underworld and guys you won’t believe right from the Mumbai Underworld to the underworld down south, Bombay bomb blasts, to the networking of all these criminals internationally he had all the research done for himself. It was again a pleasure to hear him talk about all these things. I wish he were the same while the shooting of scene number 55 + 56.
Cut to the House another incident that I will remember for a long long time. We were shooting in the exterior. A shot, which required Amitji to drive in the house premises. The shot was to be shot on a jimmy jib. It must have been around say three pm or so. Prakash Mahapatra was all set with his assistant Tony. Roy and RGV were too ready to roll. We did a couple of rehearsals for the jib movement and RGV announced on the mike “Taking”. The field is clear, everybody full focused, ready to roll. As Amitji observes that the tyre marks are imprinted on the sand, he says “Ramu wait” “why Amitji?” “No no Ramu the tyre marks will be seen” “Its Ok Amitji, nobody will even notice it” “No no lets lets just clean them”. The moment he said that, we called for the setting boys. The setting boys were ready with a broom to clean the tyre marks. But realizing that the broom marks are clearly seen Amitji insisted that we get a branch of a tree and wipe it so that it looks natural. Realizing that RGV had started getting impatient both Abhishek, me and one of the setting boys Maruti rushed with a branch to clean the ground. Knowing the field was large and taking time, Amitji just bhagaoed all of us, he took the branch from Maruti and started wiping the tyre and broom marks all by himself. We did ask him to let us do that, but the man would not listen, he must have wiped a good twenty thirty feet stretch of the marks all by himself. It was wonderful to see Big B actually do all this. What amazing level of professionalism and what amazing team spirit. I doubt any of these new actors would keep their fucking ego aside and do what the BIG B did. Indeed it was a big thing sir…
Cut to A scene where Jiah is playing with a hosepipe, in fact the continuation of the scene that you all are seeing in the promos. So obviously she has to be wet. So we were shooting a shot outside before she enters the house. Munnar being very cold, we had made arrangements for hot water for her to get wet. I was co coordinating the water and the hosepipe, where in just before the shot I was putting the water on her with the pipe and quickly hiding behind the wall from where she is running. RGV, Amit Roy and the entire unit was sitting one the opposite together, Jiah and I on the other side. All of a sudden I don’t know what happened, I heard RGV instructing me on the mike, “Zurya, just wet her more”. Bas… that was it. I thought maybe I was not doing my job properly. And especially after getting the instructions loud and clear from THE MAN himself, I ensured that Jiah’s each and every part of her body was wet. While putting the water on her, I am thinking, maybe he might be wanting the shine on her body of the light reflecting on her. This time I was bang on… JIAH WAS WET… from her head to the toe. Cut to RGV on the mike “taking”. I just took the pipe and hid behind the wall. The shot was ok; I was feeling proud that “chalo shot achcha hua”. I happily came out from behind the wall and started walking towards the unit members. All of a sudden I realized that everybody is looking and laughing at me. I was wondering as to what the matter was and did anything happen. Everybody kept laughing, when I finally asked Abhishek “kya hua??????” to which he told me, that RGV seeing that you were enjoying putting water on Jiah made you do the same thing again and got your pictures clicked saying that “just save this pictures we will send it to Surya’s wife or girlfriend or whoever she is”.

Baarish – yahi toh beauty hain uss aadmi ke saath kaam karne ki.
wowww.. just finished watching “trailer junction” where they showed the extended trailer and heard ‘rozana’ sung by big B. don’t think much of the song, but i gotta hand it to the man for singing it with such a haunting tone and pulling it off with such aplomb.. if indeed the whole song was sung by him, then…… charan sparsh sirji….. (bloody hell where is that charan sparsh-wala icon when you need it???)
Kartik man,
yes its sung by him and he rocks. Today he finished dubbing for the entire film… man i wonder if i will ever get to work with him.
rozane jiye,
rozane mareh..
Big B should sing haunting songs like rozane or sad songs like ‘Mein Yahan Tu Wahan’ often..
Anyone know what Jia Khan’s hair colour was for the movie – I LOVE it
