NO SMOKING- Edit locked

Finally .. A nightmare of a process is over.. after three months in the editing room, we have it locked.. we missed the Cannes deadline .. we haven’t yet announced the poster contest winner.. we missed a lot else.. so much for telling everyone that it will be a hundred minute film.. I ended making a 160 minute film.. its so painful to cut out your favourite shots.. its so difficult to find objectivity.. I had to frequently get away from the film to find it..had to take week long, sometimes a fortnight sabbatical from it to fall out of love with my shots.. Finally had to ask Vishal to come in and be ruthless with my film.. who do I have to thank for it.. Mira Nair.. still remember what she said to me when I complemented her on her economy of shots , she said ,”oh we spent a lot of time on editing..I don’t know why people here don’t spend time on it”.. well four months later we have a rocking rollercoaster..

What a Process it has been.. With so many people chipping in with their suggestions.. From Devashish Makhija, to Vikrmaditya to Nikhil Advani to Gulzar saab to Gautam .. finally came to many new discoveries.. two people whose opinion you should trust the most when editing.. Your EDITOR.. its so obvious that we don’t see it..Every time after the entire process I have always come to and done what AARTI says right in the beginning.. but my first reaction is “Oh she doesn’t understand what I mean “ to “why doesn’t she understand it” to “ ok lets try it” to “oh that works” to “oh that works but let me think” to “Aarti you are a genius”.. I don’t know why I always look at the very people who help me realize my dream as enemies to my creativity..

Second your PRODUCERS.. who I always look upon as my biggest enemy.. The most incredible cut.. most incredible because it was drastic, it was ruthless to the point of self annihilation.. it was so unexpected, so unreasonable(when suggested) that it shocked both me and Vishal bharadwaj.. and then we both looked at each other and said almost in unison,”it could work’.. then spoke to Aarti then had to get rinkoo her assistant..just to try it.. and it rocked.. It came from KUMAR MANGAT.. I always thought he was so good at handling people and other things.. I also would blame him sometimes for other things.. but I never gave him credit for Creativity.. I forgot he was the first positive response to “NO SMOKING”.. I forgot he actually produced OMKARA.. well he nailed it.. And VISHAL Bharadwaj , I was so insecure with letting him take a go at my film, and I also needed it and there was no one else I respected and trusted to have a go.. Gulzar saab said,” I did it to him in omkara, I took out everything and he came back and put it all right back, but it helps finding objectivity”.. and I would think ,”now that we all love the film, now that every body likes it ..can we not let it go, is it important to improve on it, is it important to make it better..does it become better..will I not lose my vision..will I not lose my stamp..what exactly is a stamp or style… is it not vanity.. but don’t I watch movies that has creative vanity..don’t I love them..” oh its such a nonconclusive, chaotic discussion one can have with himself..

Whatever.. it all gets fruitful in the end.. edit as much as one can, edit not chop.. it does not change the vision.. neither does it change the story.. it just sharpens the unfolding of it.. it increases the unpredictability.. it ups everything.. it just cuts the shots we take only for the sake of showing off.. they just give you fodder to brag about so you can tell stories of how you pulled it off.. it just kills those incredible parts you can put in the making off of the film.. so people can respond and say OH WOW.. so a lot of things we blogged about has gone out ..and it is because they were about themselves and not about the film.. how much we learn with everyfilm and how much we increasingly find out that we really don’t know anything.. and all we can do constantly is search and look and try and figure and do our best, it doesn’t take away any vision or kill an idea , it just makes it effective.. its all about the process which will never come to an end.. it will be a sad day if it does..

NO SMOKING is finally 120:19 minutes..

Cutting out scenes that meant to much to you because you recall the pain and the joy of getting those shots in production! Thank you for the wonderful insight into how difficult editing can be on the director.

May I ask you one thing - have you ever had to cut out a small actor entirely? Say someone who had a small role, but they were very good and this was a big deal for them and their career. But during editing, you realized you didn’t need the scene (or sub-plot) at all… How the heck do you tell them?

  7. striker on May 13th, 2007 8:01 am

usually end credits go something like this.. directed by, written by, produced by.. and if you’re lucy, you’re able to catch the editor’s name. i always claim it should go.. directed by, edited by, then the rest.. an editor is a 2nd director, so much so that they have to have the vision of the main director in telling the story, and the technical know-how to put it all together.. they can make a bad actor or scene look good.. hell, i say have the editor on set if possible.. the inputs they can give to the director would be priceless.

    Hey Anurag,

Since you mentioned missing the Cannes deadline I was wondering whether you’d consider writing a post about the importance/impact of festival acceptance on a film.
    Cheers.

    Anurag,

I worked in Yuva, know abhinav pretty well. I have seen Black friday 21 times till now, for its sheer cinematic brilliance. I have always admired your path breaking methods of writing and now cinema. (was a touch disappointed with a few lines in Yuva, which Abhinav wrote on site in Pollachi….maybe bcos of the delay int he film….especially Bong lines…”Prothom baar aamader gaanwe ekta aurat jeeteche…”) That was unlike your lines…maybe you wanted Bangaladesh infulence there…But loved your lines for AB and in Black Friday….

Hey am sure NS is going to rock…dunno about the worl…frankly care a fuck whether they like it or not …because I would defienitely like…!!!

    All the best !!!

Hey Anurag … good to know that NO SMOKING is ready to inhale. I am very curious to see how the cut has changed from the version I saw at Rosh’s place.

I am sure you’ll hear many different comments about the film … but as I said on that day, and as I’ll repeat here … “this is not a movie that will be ignored.”

Congrats on reaching picture-lock … and keep lighting the way for the rest of us.

  18. CC on May 14th, 2007 1:05 am

Just a basic question, may be a foolish one but what is more important editing the script or editing the movie. If the answer is editing the movie, then why have a structured script?

    Hi Anurag,

I wish you all the best for No smoking.I heard it has Ayesha takia as well apart from John playing the main protagonist.I have a small request, i would like to see Aishwarya rai in your films.I know lot of people consider her epitome of bad acting and i’m not her ardent fan but i liked her work in some films ,She is a decent actor (if john also considered a bad actor though i disagree if he can act..It becomes difficult for actors coming from modelling background like john, ash to prove themselves as good actors. )she is not a Deepti Naval or Smitha Patel but still i want to see her in your films and i know one thing she is as good as her director.
I’m sure she would be ready to act in your film and the film should be a complete departure from what she has done till date.Actually Rahul bose and Ash will make an interesting combination ,even john-ash too.sci-fiction or horror or mytical film or suspense thriller or a subtle comedy etc genres can be explored with the above combinations.Though , i’m sure my wish will never be fulfilled i wrote you just
like that.Forgive me if am wrong.

Anurag,if u find it too difficult to cut all those beautiful shots just ask nikhil advani or think about salaameishq. either u cut ur love story or audience’s will cut there share of love.if only nikhil cud have taken out tht complete salman-priyanka and anil kapoor-juhi track,it wud hav worked. saw the film in a late nite show, felt its hould be re-named as is raat ki subah nahi!!!

hey when is the film going to release? dude Black Friday was so good but i feel it wasn’t publicised properly and hence didnt get the commercial success it deserved.
No Smoking has got a great cast , so do publicise it. It’s better to lose lakhs publicising and making crores later on at the box office.

  34. Aaina on June 22nd, 2007 5:53 pm

    Hi Anurag

Let me first congratulate you on wrapping up your movie, No Smoking. I am one of the contestants of the contest you had on your blog for the poster of No Smoking. We were told that we would get a response saying who the winner is sometime in February but that, obviously, didn

  35. Anurag Kashyap on June 22nd, 2007 8:36 pm

hey aaina, the winners will be announced soon.. after the release date is locked.. seriously didn’t know your concept was ripped off..the conference poster was done overnight without any consultation by rahul nanda.. if your allegation is true , will rip him apart.. this can’t be happening.. will just get on to it.. and you can claim it.. write me a mail on the poster contest post, with reference to your entry number and i will take him to task.. serious apologies..

  36. Anurag Kashyap on June 22nd, 2007 8:55 pm

AAINA_i am sorry, i saw your three designs.. i can’t see where it is ripped off.. is there something that you see and i don’t..

  37. Aaina on June 22nd, 2007 9:16 pm

Thanks for the reply. You can refer to this page to see the similarity between my design and yours:

    http://www.aainaism.com/2007/06/22/128/no-smoking-director-anurag-kashyap-unfair/

    Thanks
    - Aaina.

  38. striker on June 22nd, 2007 9:23 pm

aaina, i saw your site.. aainaism.com.. and i’m just curious to know.. how is your poster “ripped off” from the poster at “a conference” (would you mind informing us what conference this was, btw?).. what do YOU feel are the similarities that your poster and the alleged poster in question have in common? because honestly, i find none. i mean ZERO. now i’m just curious to know if i’m erred in my point of view or not.

  39. oz on June 22nd, 2007 10:01 pm

This is your original image which you claim to be your entry for the contest

This is the image which you claim has been copied

I think it is a copy. The word “No Smoking” appears in both the posters.

Seriously… have you checked the other entries in the contest to see how much of a copy your own entry is to the posters before you… if we are going to go by such skewed vision. Seriously are you trying to promote your website by generating such stupid controversy out of thin air.

Congratulations. Your fake controversy just earned a few hits for your website.

  40. Macchar on June 22nd, 2007 10:10 pm

Well, I logged on to Aainaism, curious about the whole thing, I stared and started at the two images, hoping to find some similarity. I am seriously stumped, either my eye sight failed or somethings wrong with my creative perception. As Oz said above, after so many minutes of sherlock holmes deduction, I could find ONE BIG similarity and that is “NO SMOKING”.

Aaina, I suggest you sue Anurag for using the words “No Smoking” in his title! Atleast for a few millions.

On a serious note, please don’t waste people’s time, everyone’s got lot of things to do…

  41. Aaina on June 22nd, 2007 10:16 pm

Excuse me, but the concept on both designs is the same. It has been tweaked a bit to include the cigarette piece in it. The font is the same and so is the whole idea.

You think you have the liberty to exploit people like that by first asking them to submit entries and then using their designs? And I can assure you I have a lot more ways to publicize my website than to post a link here. Please!!

I am not saying that no one else can get this idea but the problem is that first you ask for ideas from people and then go ahead and make your own poster from others’ ideas.

Me copying others’ ideas is not even a part of this argument but if you claim that I have copied someone’s idea, please prove it.

  42. Aaina on June 22nd, 2007 10:24 pm

    Macchar:

I am not going to prove it to you or anyone else. If you don’t see it, maybe you’re right, maybe there IS something wrong with your eyesight.

All I want to say that this is not as serious as you’re making it to be. I am not suing anyone and I am not claiming for anything. All I want to do is point this out to Anurag and that’s it.

    “please don

  43. Vijay on June 22nd, 2007 10:30 pm

Oh teri bhen di! I think I may have found another poster that has stolen your concept!!! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it! It was as if your poster was placed in front of an Aaina! Not only have they stolen your copy, they have even used the same sign from your poster! So sad! The plagiarized poster is pasted below!

  44. Machchar on June 22nd, 2007 10:38 pm

First, you should understand the concept of public domain. Posting a message in a message board definitely makes people read your message so you can’t say no one asked anyone to read your messages.

And, forget wasting my time. Film makers in post production have a lot of things to worry about than some silly rants.

I am sure according to the Dr.Aaina Sharma, my eye sight has failed. What similarity are you talking about? Fonts? excuse me…any damn kid can see the fonts are different.

And you argument was just a cigarette was used and changed? HAHA..A cigarette makes all the difference and infact totally changes the concept…btw how many variations anyone can bring in a title called “No Smoking”? Even though I don’t have anything to do with this contest, I suggest you start getting fired up ONLY IF THERE IS AN EXACT MATCH!

  45. striker on June 22nd, 2007 10:49 pm

=)) “the concept on both designs is the same. It has been tweaked a bit to include the cigarette piece in it. The font is the same and so is the whole idea.”

aaina, you’re too funny.. really.. you should look into becoming a standup comedian.. the font?? :)) the only thing we can possibly blame anurag for is the announcing of the winner pre-feb.. but the font.. that really just takes the cake!

  46. Manjeet Singh on June 22nd, 2007 10:52 pm

Aaina, What you are claiming is the height of stupidity..Or may be you are too smart as Oz rightly said.
You should appreciate Anurag’s generosity that actually he replied and even apologised taking for granted that your claim was correct..
Actually you should apologise to Anurag and this site.

  47. Krysh on June 22nd, 2007 11:18 pm

If a movie titled No Smoking wont have words No Smoking somehow woven into it then which movie would have! No Parking! No Entry! No Limits!!!..I think there is no issue..Yes Anurag had the decency to reply and look into the matter if there was any malpractice..And there seems to be none..A case of smoke without fire?

  48. Honhaar Goonda on June 23rd, 2007 12:06 am

you know, Aaina, you can/could be sued for fake allegations.

  49. Raaj Pillai on June 23rd, 2007 12:42 am

    Aaina,
this whole thing is so stupid…….if u call this a copy, then according to me originality does’nt exist at all.

    raaj

  50. Machchar on June 23rd, 2007 1:36 am

And if Aaina is implying the use of colors like Yellow and white, she should understand that for a title like “No Smoking”, the first connection ANY designer will make is with a cigarette which mostly has a yellow butt and a white cigarette.

So, Aaina, chillax and the decent thing you could do is apologize to Anurag as what you accused is tantamount to casting aspersions on his integrity!

  51. raj singh on July 3rd, 2007 4:07 am

    Anurag,

Even as I agree with everyone else when they say that what Aaina is claiming is pure bullshit, I also think that the poor girl has been getting it in her face from all ends for a while now. Don’t you think it’s time to bring up a new topic?

I read Black Friday and then I watched your film, I think it is one of the best documented films, I have seen till date. It is complete, and it is true to that book. But I think there is just one problem, whereas it is easy to flip back into a book to check who a certain somebody was, in a film, so many characters put together can get very confusing. However, to an extent I am contradicting myself, for taking away a single character would mean altering or ignoring facts.

I am waiting for No Smoking to release as much as anyone else, congratulations on it’s completion, congratulations on the delivery of your latest baby (the film of course).

luved the promos of film ..john is looking awesome..phew..i hope it will be as crisp and meaningful as it seems…
and i desperatley wish that it will be a nice movie.. coz i will wait for the reviews..

  59. sourav on September 30th, 2007 12:41 am

@tuhina..do you wait for a review to watch a movie? Isnt it a crime to stop yourself from watching it if you feel so strongly about it..and have a gut feeling that it would do well for itself?

  60. tuhina shukla on September 30th, 2007 1:06 am

i ve been dissapointed so many times..most recent dissapointment was jhoom barabar jhoom. everything luked so perfect before release . but it was such a bad film
and also i didnt watch rgv ki aag (thanx 2 reviews) .
i cant bet my 500 bucks to see crappy movies with gud packaging ..

  61. sourav on September 30th, 2007 1:15 am

Dont you get that gut feeling..those signs..that feeling which makes you think the movie will do well…even though not commercially..but probably enough for you.

  62. tuhina shukla on September 30th, 2007 2:08 am

gut feeling and signs are long gone..directors have disapointed me again nd again.. when u watch a trailer its like a glimpse from a dream. and u start expecting from it .
but when movie is nt upto d mark . dream brakes and we start criticizing it..and tell me wat gud it is.. if u come out of hall cribbing bout it…

  63. sujay on October 4th, 2007 1:05 am

hey anurag..i hav been waiting 4 ur next after black fri..black fri was simply outstanding … no smoking seems 2 b a nice thriller seeing the promos..especially john is in a complete new avtaar which suits him…also the backgroundscore is wonderful… al d best 4 no smoking…

  64. Supremus on October 7th, 2007 2:17 pm

Had it not been for the ridiculously delicious soundtrack, I would dismiss this movie outright based on the promo!!

The promo was absolutely lackluster, and just didnt click; the promo gave me a feeling of watching “The Cell” by Tanveer Singh… just seemed very eccentric and awful. Something abt it just doesnt seem Anurag Kashyap to me. Hopefully I am wrong.

And Hopefully the movie releases in this decade!

I’m trying to remember the editing in The Namesake … the low-key lighting, tea-stained colors and well-framed compositions were like classical paintings. Particularly, the shot of Tabu and Irfaan in bed was very memorable… Such beautiful shots would make it a joy to edit.

Ah, yes, I remember the three-dimensional effects on the advertising in the airport. That was stunning. When is this ever going to be on DVD so we can memorize it?

    Mr Kashyap,

I saw your film No Smoking despite the awful reviews and the only emotion I felt was anger. I deserve an explanation for the weird abstract crap you have created. What happens in that movie? Is this some kind of contest where you will give the person who deciphers your movie a cash prize?

What was extremely interesting to me in NS- this immemorial question -the person and society.
Adapting to pressure of society, we pay off loss of a significant part of the individuality.

Smoking ,as I understand- is simply symbol of personal (in this case the male essense ) freedom, or, we shall tell other-antisocial properties of any person (and personal freedom always is antisocial), having refused from which under pressure of society, the person lost they deep true I .
The mechanism of brains washing is shown perfectly in speeches Babu Bengali with transparent devil behind his back. Methods and results of this pressure upon the person in film directly associative with hitler`s methods of mass physical destruction in gas chambers. What is puzzled me -association of Russia and hitler. Interestingly. For me personally these two countries are connected, there where hitler`s Germany -in the same place is victory of Russia and disposal of the world from fascism. In each Russian family there is a grandfather or the great-grandfather the victim in war with hitlerite Germany. But, perhaps, in film this association is different -perception Russia as the totalitarian society completely supervising the person (as in hitlerite Germany).
I liked surreal beauty of this moment in film-K appears in a situation, where his freedom ( expressed in smoking ) is impossible basically. On the TV on a background there is a text of news that in acts of terrorism in cigarettes has been found cyanide and the decree of the president is totally forbid smoking . Beautifully.
In an extreme situation of a choice K behaves extremely -will allow itself to kill more likely, than will refuse the smoking (freedom). Well, the direct choice is easier for making, you understand that you are right and struggle for it up to the end.
It is much more difficult to protect freedom of individuality when you are poisoned by created of society creeping poison of simulacrum and installations of which are driven in into your brain and soul, then you start to doubt of the correctness and any more you do not know, what is important to your I, and what is not.
What is killed me :)-a deciding starter of the beginning of submission K society was all the same the woman.. Doubly killed me -she was happy remained from K a body without soul and has not noticed difference Scaring perception of the female beginning generally. :)
(Now because of this film I should think twice before to tell something to my husband. O, my God, I do not wish to be a causes pushing him to the beginning of destroying his individuality.:d)

It is interesting perception of the woman`s essence in film. A superficial layer: woman the-wife, expressing concentration pressure of society and obedient convenience (in the same person) is clearly. Mother-sense of faults, female generally -incognizable, simultaneously obedient and imperious essence with closed face - is clear too.
But what is not very clear to me-why among these separated souls in a cell was not any female soul? Two answers-or they the perfect divine beings which do not have contradictions between a body and soul or at women in general does not have a soul. . Interestingly.
And on the other hand-duality of the female beginning (the dualism there in all concepts and images sticks out) was distinctly showed in the same stage, in fact she strongly tried to give this one rupee to Babu Bengali.. And K has not never even tried.
    Excuse me my foggy thinking.

Thank you for the film, Anurag.

I saw your movie “No Smoking” yesterday, which came to me here via the Comcast cable premium channel, Bollywood. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can clearly see why some in the audience must have disliked it. Its the same frustration that you encounter if you go read Kafka without knowing what you are getting into. The promos should have been better, I suppose. Ending was a bit vague, but acceptable. It seems to move too quickly between reality and subconscious.
People who smoke have the experience of a sense of pseudorelief from a difficult situation even when in dreams if they smoke!!The power of nicotine. Try a nicotine patch, atleast it wont give you cancer.
