NO SMOKING-Frustrations galore

The reason we are so behind as a a filmmaking nation is that we don’t love making films..since i started this blog there are only advices and complains from the filmmaking fraternity..am drunk out of my mind..my sound equipment hung up on me..i couldn’t take the vertical shot of the hospital because the camera didn’t have a vertical tilt grip..the problem with this country is that when we import equipments,we import second hand spare parts and we assemble them here..our government does not treat filmmaking more than an exercise in vanity..maybe we deserve it..no wonder when faced with beaureaucracy oliver stone decided to take his alexander to thailand..the reason we make most films abroad is because when we go there things are made available to us..most countries in the world look at films as the means to promote tourism, so they invite us, make all possibilities and let cinema prevail..our custom duties, our tax system and our policies make it impossible to import genuine new equipments..hence they can’t be insured..hence noone who owns it wants to take a chance..and there is a lot to recover so they use it till its beyond not usable..they don’t service it..and they fuck up in general..
now why am i complaining..because i have to beg and plead the guys to allow me to put 535 on the steadicam..i have to deal with the sync sound system hanging up..i have to deal with delays..there are hardly ten cameras in this country which are flawless..the kino flos go off mid shot..we have twenty fucking electricians working all the time as we still use the old lighting systems..our plugboards are the same handmade boards that were invented simultaneously with the loud assembeled generators for god sake..in the sixties..now coming back to no smoking ,i am one scene and two shots behind the schedule..why?..the delays..
SRK says now we are not afraid of losing money because tie-ins and various other ways and methods can now be used to make money..so..we have stopped making films..now we make haldiram’s mixture..one recipe pleases all..or that’s what we think..then applaud ourselves and repeat all over again..i have finished nine days of shooting and i am scared shitless..no smoking needs to be treated and stylised, but how can i treat it if our technical delays won’t stop..who has the time to make a film..every thing needs to be explained and understood, says the distributor…spoonfeeding..i can’t..
OK..whatever i wrote before this was yesterday..saw the rushes today..am happy..does anyone believe in contradictions..my state of mind today contradicts yesterday’s..three days gap starts today..before we shoot the streets on sunday..why is it that we can shoot townside only on sundays..
SUNDAY-what a great shoot..the day started late..john had the flu..he still showed up..i started by shooting closeups using one of my adS as john’s hand..that guy wore john’s trousers..john freaked out on him..i got worried initially..so i went to him and he winked at me and said he was just fucking with them..there is generally so much sweat and humidity on sets that wearing pants that someone else has sweated on can cause anything..i asked them to have duplicate trousers made in the future..then it rocked..i took john in the heart of mohammad ali roads, in the ghettos..he was instantly mobbed..the crowd wouldn’t let us shoot..i got angry and hit a guy with the clapboard..my people warned me to keep my calm..i started ranting about how can we ever shoot on streets if people won’t let us..black friday was impossible to shoot we could still do it because actors were pretty unknown..with john..i can’t and won’t..we had to leave..we went back to the base ..we had to shoot there ..somehow..next two hours we planned..charted out the route..rigged two cameras on the SUV..rehearsed the whole long scene with john and left..there still was a crowd..there always is quipped rajkumar..i know..i retorted..we still shot ..we got our shot because we were always moving..we all depended on john who was driving and acting with half his left point of view completely blocked..i had to give the clap with one hand and simultaneously put on the camera on the side rig..and john drove like a champion dodging crowds..bikers chasing us to be in the frame..john took the challenge ,gave them the wheelies..on screen the desperation that his charecter needed to have got accentuated because of the situation..the sequence rocked..the mohammed ali road atmosphere, unadulterated ,non-cosmetic with john in the thick of it was wild..dying to see the dailies, hoping its as good or better than what i saw on the monitor..we had to go back again..john broke traffic signals..its so amazing when your actor is also a great driver..he shoul have been in the NASCAR..am i going crazy raving about him..i was ecstatic, after the shoot i even send him a SMS saying-i love you..i hope he doesn’t thing i am gay..
Then it all began again..my actress is delayed by three days..my house set is standing..costing us two lakhs a day..first it took us three monthe to find a genuine penthouse in the heart of the city in the highest tower, then two weeks to convince the owner..then further do it up maccording to how we needed it..since we are using the bath tub as the entry point to K’s nightmares..it had to be strategically placed..so we converted the terrace into the glass bathroom.you can see the entire city when the man is in there..now where was i..my troubles..never ending..we planned according to her dates..why is it that actresses do two much together..is it because they are not paid as much as their male counterparts or is it because her role is not as good as john..but then it always was K’s story..am so frustrated..then i got bad allergy because of all the cigarettes and dust and humidity..Ronchii detected in my lungs..slept for twelve hours..
Raj kumar santoshi finally couldn’t make it at the last moment..we got Kiku..the actor who plays every one from illaiya raja to lata mangeshkar to bappi lahri on the great indian comedy show..we made him look like rajkumar santoshi..people are going to be confused..if they do get that way, will i be kicked..you bet..kiku was good..
am discoverin a lot of things..Ninad our grip guy doesn’t say no to any shot i would design..things that you can do..i wish i worked with him before..have to call him..he is suddenly bed ridden..the cramps he has been having was due to kidneystone..how will i function without him..have to..his people should pull it off ..only if he can tell them how to go about it..why don’t we insure our films..
have to go now.. saw departed..all you detractors of that film..go to hongkong..i loved that movie..except the endin was a bit hindi film..especially the outside the elevators scene..”tujhe kya lagta hai sirf tu hi bika hua hai..main bhi frank ka chooha tha” dialogue sucked..every thing else rocked..martin scorcese zindabad..until later.

Anurag-bhai,good to know after all the troubles the rushes rocked.Your writings about John is turning me a fan of that guy and now I’m waiting eagerly for Kabul Express. The Departed ending was a bit let down, with everyone shooting everyone else. But the characterisations specially those of Jack Nicholson and Leonardo rocked.Just a curious, as a scriptwriter Anurag what would have been your ending to The Departed.

Hi Anurag!
nice to see yet another post. Obviously shooting is going on as you have been absent from writing here.
One has to believe in contradictions if one has to move on because Nature does not allow to be stiff.
Is it true that we are not good filmmaker nation because we dont love making films? These days if not every child than most of the children see their career in films or associated fields. If problem lies than it lies within the film Industry itself because film making is sort of individual work there. No organisation to impose few common policies and more over filmi people dont seem to be interested in following rules. If there are certain rules associated with film making then govt officials will take affairs as genuine case. But producers work with personal interest first and so lack of common policies. Like Industries, there are very few rules for safety and insurence of crew especailly lower grade crew.
If few people have to demosntrate on a road then rules say they have to inform the authorities. Do filmmakers also do same while going on roads to shoot, so that authorities can arrange the discipline and here another difficulty arrises: from where so many police people will come? Its difficult time in country and most of the police is engaged in the safety of politicians and celebrities then how they can arrange extra police. Or perhaps crowd also has gone crazy these days. I remember watching Dharmendra’s shooting in my school days and it was a small city and though large crowd was there to watch Dharmendra but no nonsense was created there and people were enjoying the presence and acting of Dharam ji.

Shooting for a movie in Mohd Ali Rd is damn rsiky business. Wtih the no. & kind of ppl around there is no way in hell 1 will be able get a good shot w/o having ppl gawking at the camera. This will show up in the movie as well.
Remember the 70’s & 80’s movies when Amitabh / Rekha etc used to dance on street & the whole nation crowding around? Cant figure out how the actors & crew werent scared shitless to do it on open road. Hats off to the courage shown byt whole crew of all the movies dat were shot on streets.
Has Departed come out on DVD? D stupid Cinema company here in my country has not yet released it.

It would be very annoying if a shot has to be retaken coz of noise disturbance. Especially in an outdoor shoot in city like Mumbai. Plus the sound quality you get can not be compared to what one would get in dubbing.
Was curious to know why r u guys using sync sound? Do the actors demand it or the production people prefer it.
Mumbai does have latest silent 535s and even silent generators!

hello sirjee,
gr8 to hear your anecdotes. how else is everything functioning? yesh even i thought that departed ended like a hindi film but nevertheless Scorcese keeps his fans going. i wanted my hands on the coen brothers Raising arizona , barton fink and big lebo. plz do lend me them. i wanted to meet u. havent met the whole of 2006.

As I have said before we won’t become a filmmaking nation or outsiders will start appreciating our films until our audiences changes.
Our audience still prefers to watch (crap movies) “Bollywood” and media bigs up those kind of movies, where as real films won’t get much of attention. Even Indian audience changes there is always NRI (american/british born indian) market – which prefers to watch “Bollywood” movies compare to Hindi movies. They would rather see a hollywood but not hindi if they want to see a ‘mature’ film.
Hence you will see more businessman than filmmakers in our industry.

Dude, I feel for you with you frustrations on the equipment that’s available. But to tell you the truth, even here in Los Angeles when you work on low budgets, its the same shit man. Sure the studios got all the great stuff, but for the indie filmmakers, they still gotta deal with substandard cameras, and a lot of fucking red-tape. But in my opinion, that’s part of the fun of filmmaking too. Dealing with challenges.
Anyway, since we are talking about all this equipment hindering the creative process, I want to quote David Lynch from the Q&A session I was at last night for “Inland Empire” which was completely shot on DV, and was visually fucking amazing: “I love DV! It gives so much freedom. I can move the camera however I want, whenever I want, whereever I want”…”When you shoot on film, the process becomes about the technicalities and it takes hours to set up a shot. With “Inland Empire” I only rolled the camera, never had to wait to set up.”…”For me, film is dead”.

hi anurag! it’s been really interesting reading your take on the behind the scenes of your own film…the frustration, the excitement, the ups & the downs…must be challenging, huh? by any chance is the plot of your film similar to jason reitman’s “thank you for smoking”? just curious to know…i’ve seen the film and must say that ..it’s a must watch for movie buffs.also heard that rgv had offered you to write his version of sholay…how true is that? know that you even worked on it for a while and due to difference of opinion you guys parted ways…correct?
loading...
anurag, great post man.. and yes, contradictions are always ok. it’s normal to rant when things go wrong, such as in your case. but am curious about your first sentence: “The reason we are so behind as a a filmmaking nation is that we don’t love making films”
am curious to know if you now contradict this as well? it seems too generalized, because you too, are a part of this “we”. and that would imply that you don’t love making films, which is about as true as jenna jameson’s b-cups. (oz, stop corrupting my mind!) and if “we” as a nation don’t love making films, then would this really be a nation that churns out the most number of movies per year than any other country? (granted 99% of them are crap and are made with the sole purpose of making money)
i feel that what you’re trying to say (and correct me if i’m wrong) is that the fraternity doesn’t SUPPORT those who love making films. case in point like you said, there are only advices and complaints. everyone talks the talk, nobody walks the walk. there’s a lot of chugalkhors out there that say one thing in front of you, and do another behind your back… and needless to say, this isn’t the only industry that goes thru it, but you just see and hear about it a lot more, which is what brings it to the forefront.
a personal example is when i came to india as an actor with 4 films as a lead under my belt (thought i’d build up my experience here in US before making the move).. when i was in mumbai, i was told i’m too dark for hindi films.. was told to try my luck down south because i have a “good look” for tamil movies. conversely, when i was in the south, i was told i have a “good look” for hindi movies
) as a delhiite my hindi may be better than my tamil, but not by all that much. bloody hell, i’ve done movies in english, tamil, AND hindi so far. my point here is that there wasn’t much support from either end, and instead of pointing me in the right direction, i was being shown the exit. and that’s where there’s more detractors than supporters.
your say?

Great Post AK….
“K” hmm who is she? I thought the actress was Ayesha…Are we missing something?
On another note…did you get the swimming pool shot done? How did it go?

Hey ricky, yes i saw thank you for smoking at arclights in LA when it came out last year..have seen it five times since..love the movie..my film is a lot different..though i am trying to get my hands on the tex williams title song..
Yeah striker when i say we,i somewhere include myself..there are times i give in to..when faced with a choice of either complete shut down or continue working..i gave in twice..i have also done dialogues for films which are blatant copies..i have re written them but either i refused credit or took dialogue credit..guilt is always overbearing ,so i tend to drown it in money..its my own way of continuing to work in the system..
and all that is because there are no patrons of cinema..and one that did exist at one time..passed away yesterday(just read it on PFC)..
see ya for now..heading for the shoot..we start with the house today..wish me luck..

“one day indistinguishable from the next, a long continuous chain,
then suddenly there is a change”
- taxi driver
Dear Mr.Kashyap,
Life feels much like that. Life at this juncture feels like one hell
of a marathon. I am running, pushing myself to the limits. Running
hard….sweating….feel like throwing up…I even swallow some vomit and
run…..towards never land…..just that I always feel like I am running
on a treadmill.
This life’s marathon on a treadmill…..running in my own orbit.….I just
cannot differentiate between being mobile and immobile…. waiting for
that indistinguishable chain to break….my legs aren’t tired they seem
to have accepted this….even the hands and the head….and everything
else seems tuned…..get the fuck out of this space….I yell at
them…..they won’t listen…..I motivate them and finally tried to jump
off my orbit…I started running again…..but it feels no
different…..run….run….run……
It all started when my Dad got a second hand VCR when I was 9. He had
no idea that this was going to fuck up his plans of his Iyer boy of
becoming an Engineer….. taking an IT job and marrying a beautiful Iyer
girl who could sing carnatic music….instead…..I sang Bang Bang…..
“I was nine and he was 30ish….Bang Bang….I saw him disappear….Bang
Bang….they called him Mr. India…..Bang Bang…..I saw him fly Bang
Bang….he wore Red…..Bang Bang…they called him Superman ……Bang Bang…….I
hit the ground…Bang Bang……trying to ape the man….Bang Bang…….”
I just could not get enough of it. Mr.India, Superman, Shaolin,
Anthony Gonzalvis, Django, Supersnooper….Sholay…. I wanted to know how
it’s done. I came to know that the one that makes all this possible is
called a filmmaker and I wanted to be one.
I am 28 today. A couple of years ago I was into the Web Streaming
business. Technology and stuff. I was into this for quite sometime,
that is before I quite a few Bank jobs and yes also dropped out of Law
School. And the techno bit….I chucked that too. Made a few corporate
films…shot some machines drilling oil and a few statistics stating why
they were better than any other oil in the marker….Duh!!….and shot
some people wearing ties behind jazzy graphics puking gyaan about why
to invest in cement and not in drugs this November…
Somewhere I felt I had to chuck all my options to get into this. Mr.
Mani Ratnam I hear said you need to get into film making there is not
other way. Whether he said it or not I heard it….I went ahead.
I got an opportunity to make a Documentary Film.
Chapter 1: Nasik Central Jail.
A rich Gujju wanted to cash in on an opportunity. He ran an NGO and
wanted to release a music album of songs sung and composed by the
prisoners. We were given 4k to shoot and edit. Me and my friend hired
a camera and we were off to Nasik.
The first thing I learned that they all are innocent…..none of them
guilty. The visit made me feel all the ones in were saints or that’s
what they claimed. Well we shot for a few hours. A couple of hours of
footage. My friend and me went in there like filmmakers but with the
Gujju around we felt more like a shaadi ka photographer. Any ways we
were thru. Ready to Roll …
Chapter 2 : The Screening.
The documentary had coincided with the shooting of “Apharan” at Nasik
Central Jail so at the music release Nana Patekar and Prakash Jha were
called and they came. They were quite happy with the initiative and
encouraged the inmates to lead a better life. The one thing they hated
that evening was….yes….My film. I heard they could not watch it for
more than 10 minutes. But it ran it’s full length……That drained away
all my courage to asks Mr. Jha is “can Assist you?:”…..Bang Bang
Boom….Dead
The End
Then there was a call for people to make films on Disability. It was
organized by The Ability Foundation Chennai. I sent in my entry too. I
called it “COME ALONG”.
Chapter 3: Life can be good in Brief Moments
There were some 500 entries and 50 were selected for screening. Come
Along was to be screen too. I was there with my aunt. The lights were
off. I was searching for a seat for me and my aunt who was really
excited to watch my film. First Day First Screening….I did not want to
miss my film….I did not know when it will be screened. The film
started and the music sounded familiar…..my aunt was busy looking for
a seat…by the time I told it my my film….all she could see was
“Directed BY B.S.Vasan”…..I was like hell….can nothing go right…and
then it happened……APPLAUSE>>>>for a good one minute…I know….and I sure
know one minute is a long long long time span…..
I met Revathy [The actress] after the screenings. Some encouraging
words and an assurance. “All the best” she said……..
I did not win any awards but she assured me that the Judges..Mani
Ratnam, Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Rajeev Menon liked my film…..There
was a special mention of Come Along in some South Indian daily…..and I
was flying around in a red cape….I made it I thought……
It’s been 2 years since that. I have been assisting Sandeep Varma
[Long Term Associate of Sudhir Mishra and Co-Writer in Shekar Kapur's
"Paani"]. Written 3 screenplays with him and assisted him in a few ad
films he made. But I am still running on that treadmill…..I feel…..

True artists often turn constraints into opportunities for creativity.
Quentin Tarantino’s celebrated technique of extended dialogues-based cinematography and subdued plots emerged from his shyness to manage production crew and change too many things on the set.
Blogging our ‘dirty linen’ out for the world to read isn’t going to help. If anything it adds a new entry to the list of things that are perhaps ‘wrong’ with this country – ‘People who do little more than just whine about an issue’.
Despite all our “issues” we have produced great filmmakers like Vishal Bharadwaj, Shekar Kapur, Farhan Akhtar to name merely a popular few.
Stop whining and get your arse moving on what it takes to be there! For, in the end, the glory is for you to enjoy. It’s not about how well your film does. It’s about the hurdles you crossed and the experience you gathered.
Be happy when you encounter challenges for at least it signals that you have some grey matter. And then let your creativity work towards an artistic solution and let others judge your work for it’s true merit. Sadly there are many filmmakers out there, who don’t even perceive problems.
You might want to add that to your whine list – The number of mediocre guys in this country, with zero talent, creativity or passion, who made it big only because they were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time!
And good luck with your film!
Try not to fall into the group that you set out to criticize! That should be victory enough.
loading...
- Ska, Farhan Akhtar = “great filmmaker”? Not sure what movies have you seen of his that we haven’t. And if blogging to you means “washing dirty linen” then you are stuck in a time warp or are just not ready to face the new lines of communication, times, thoughts and drives. And in your words if putting thoughts to paper however negative they may be – means “whining” then there is no point in even making you see the “real” picture as you seem to be quite rigid in your short visioned views. Thanks for dropping by.

hey Anurag
Before i start on this i must let u know that Martin Scorcesse happens to be one of my influences too…His Taxi Driver & Mean Streets are amazing.
But that doesnt mean i’ll lick anything the man makes even if its shit….thats exactly what he is making for last few years. He has stopped making films.
His films = beg for Oscars before his death.
I’ve always agreed with your opinions on most films. e.g., WATER is BAD BAD film. PARZANIA fucked itself with the use of English language.
Anyways i’m surprised how you also loved Departed so much like everyone else in this world. Its a joke now with my gf as we both hate DEPARTED passionately, we are both Scorcesse fans & we saw the movie together. We havn’t found anyone else who disliked the film..we find that almost romantic now..so we think its something just between us & if we find another person who disliked it we would have to kill them. I was sure you would have seen through the farce too. But ur good luck i will have to let you live.
Coming back to the film. I think its really sad to see Scorcesse make the same shit he made 20 years ago now. Doesn’t the man experience life to mke something new? Why is he making the same shit again? And why is he casting Jack Nicholson for gods sake? I almost died when Jack made that RAT Face in the film. I knew that was gonna happen. Common now Marty. Another irony is i’m a big big fan of Jack. But i don’t think Marty needs to rape Jack for a Oscar. Gangstar movies are best when you see fresh faces doing fresh stuff. You should know ’cause thats how Satya worked so well. So should Marty. But no, he & Leonardo need to suck each other off. I’m sure he will get the OSCARS. I dont think he should but i want him to get it so that he will stop making such movies & go back to his original voice. Give the man a OSCAR please.
BTW i saw WARRIOR last night. Finally found in Video Hut in Los feliz( you would love it Anurag) they have sections of Directors. I liked the film. the cinemtogrphy was awesome. But i wasnt as blown by it as the hype about it was. I find 2 reason for that
1) watching it on TV is unfair to that film, its a theater movie
2) 2 years of expectations are hard to fulfill.
I wonder what u think about that film.
BTW watch THE LIFE OF OTHERS. Its good film. thats my bet for the foreign film oscar.
cheers
