NO SMOKING – It’s a WRAP – Pictures

It’s a wrap. The last day of the shooting of No Smoking in Bombay. The team has now flown to Russia (or a neighboring country) to shoot for a few days before returning to Bombay. There could be a fat chance that they may shoot again for a day or two in Bombay after their return.

But as of now… it was the last day of shoot that Smriti, Manjeet, Vasan and Kartik went to. Covering the shoot from their points of view. Smriti with her video cam, Kartik attached like a glue to Anurag, Vasan doing wonders with his still camera – turning it to capture video (and if he isn’t stopped he may turn out sci-fi effects from that camera)… mixing around with the crew and Manjeet doing his thing and capturing the sets with his camera.

But all good things come to an end… and by noon… it was a wrap… though as noted in Vasan’s Butterfly Effect article, Kartik and Vasan got to see a raw edited version of No Smoking. To put it mildly… they are dazed… mesmerized…

The script of No Smoking had bounced over PFC’s bloggers’ heads when they had first read it in late October of ‘06. They had their doubts. Apprehensions. But what they did not see at that time was Anurag’s vision.

And now they did. And are completely bowled over. “Bombay looks like fucking New York skyline” screams Kartik over the phone… while Vasan hoped and prayed that No Smoking gets the kind of success it so deserves, because such a kind of story and such a way of telling a story has rarely been seen in Indian Cinema. According to Vasan, No Smoking is bound to be a success if it gets a worldwide release at the same time. One hopes that it does.

Here are a few pictures taken by Vasan on the last day of shooting of “No Smoking” at Kamalistan Studios… some very personal pictures from Anurag’s life (thanks for sharing!) and then the pics of the crew of No Smoking, Catching Kartik’s “roving” eye and last but not the least… team PFC that covered No Smoking.

OZ, one more request…after the film releases can we have the script of the film on PFC. In bollywood, one never gets to read any script of the film anywhere but for english movies almost all the scripts are available on net. We should start it here. what say ?

It may not be a PFC product but the no-smoking team was busy making a behind the scenes as the shoot progressed which will be out on DVD.

The script thing is great phoenixnu….as we never find a Hindi film screenplay on the net.

It would be a great experience as there were many just-before-the-camera-is-switched-on. improvisations…..it would be great to see how the magic of this man Kashyap works…..of whatever we read of other directors…none except the director knows of whats happening…why are things done the way they are happening.

One more thing I noticed about this man is he is still a humble student…despite seeing what I saw in the rushes[desperate for full on sex with no-smoking after all that foreplay

@Kartik, that would be great. Black friday is anyway releasing on february 9th. So, its just fwe days more. So far I have found only one Indian film script on net…Naseeruddin Shah’s Yun Hota To Kya Hota. N that it was posted beacuse there was some controversy between the writer n the director and so the writer, Uttam Gada posted it online. Lets make PFC – platform for the one more good thing.

ya, even i have seen that script. it somehow interests me to read indian scripts. partly because i ve never read them, partly because they are written in english n executed in hindi, n partly because i have written some and look forward to doing that a lot in future.

With No Smoking he might have relegated himself to a ghetto but then it certainly projests him to be one of those rare breed filmmakers who carry the real passion for cinema by being true to the medium & ensuring that with them cinema also grows. As It demands a different kind of idiosyncracy to understand the theme; perhaps the sole reason why the narrative was very confusing to many, still to write a screenplay around such a dubious theme & subject in itself is very brave & intriguing & calls for applause. The flair to play with low key lighting, the visual style & editing is almost indefinable. Critics may have written it off straight away & given it 1 star, or may not; doesn’t matter. If mindless comedies of Priyadarshan with same stuff can make around 4 stars everytime they hit BO on fridays then this whole star-giving system is insane & for that matter does not suggest anything. Anurag Kashyap made not just an offbeat but also a brave film. Perhaps to just call it a brave film is an understatement as movies like these might well be a precursor to what new genaration filmmakers have in store for us. NS, not just a tribute to new wave but ntroduces a whole new genre of films might well be known as psychedelic cinema (no mindless cinema). If Homi Adajania was a silent revolution with Being Cyrus, Anurag is with Black Friday. Being a mainstream movie watcher I may not be able to name a certain French or Italian filmmaker but if asked, would most certainly like to comment that the gang of new age filmmakers in Indian Film Industry today might prove to be pathbreaking & be a catalyst across the globe.
