No-Smoking- Last 2 days- ButterFly Effect

Butterfly Effect – Part -1

An Iyer boy born and brought up in Mumbai ……does odd jobs….decides to quit everything….eliminates all options and tries to join the film industry….

An Iyer boy born in Delhi….goes on to do more conventional things and becomes an engineer…..destiny brings him to Mumbai…he too nurses dreams of making it as a filmmaker someday.

A boy born in India …goes to the US….into…..software…but his passion is for cinema…takes on to blogging…with a vengeance….

Boy from Banaras comes to Bombay. It’s film reels instead of veins in his nervous system. …..there is Satya in him….and he is a hope for all the Yuva film makers

Cut To

The Iyer boy from Bombay was with the Iyer boy from Delhi, both in awe of the Boy from Banaras……courtesy this boy from the US.

The End

The final 2 days of the No-Smoking shoot in Bombay before the crew leaves for Russia. One was at Mukesh Mills Colaba and the other at Kamalistan.

Nicotine Rain

Around a thousand people had gathered and each one was given a cigarette. No these people were not fined as I had seen Anurag being stripped of a 500 rupee note by the producer.

What is Crowd Management?

Something to keep in mind before writing a script. Golden rule for a low budget film maker…..don’t have a crowd scene. Use all possible clichéd…metaphors….army of ants…take footage from NGC or Discovery. It’s not for everyone…..but the no-smoking direction team was on it…..to help the cause Anurag’s mates and associates from Black Friday and other films had dropped in the sets. Also seen in a small role was the HERO of “Gulal” and the co-writer of “No-Smoking” Raja Choudhry.

To add to the crowd PFC was present too. It was awesome meeting Manjeet and the Child Prodigy [as we call him] Chaitanya….all of 19 and this guy makes me feel uncomfortable when he talks about cinema. Half the names he takes are like Voodoo Hymes to me…[Vodoo Hymes….??????]…watch out for him and Manjeet[the silent assasin] and ofcourse Kartik….in the coming years….

There was a super model from Belgium…and she should have been used as a cue to manage the crowd of 1000. She was there for a photo shoot…the backdrop was ….yes…..a Bollywood film in progress…No Pics for PFC sorry….we had fun watching. ..ogling at her…it was put on PFC that anyone can come for the shoot that day and be a part of the finale. So no pics….everyone could have been there and had a first hand experience of the shoot. To cut a long story short. 40 odd seconds of screen time….12hours to shoot. And yes other than that Guru was hot topic of the day. I went there at 7 in the evening and came back home at 7 in the morning….saw Guru and fell ill.

Kamal Amrohi

Kartik and Smriti were there before me. Smriti had a handy cam….bombard her with your mails to get that footage out of her. It was the last day of shoot in Mumbai with John and the last day of No-Smoking for Ayesha Takiya. Though we were on the sets the action was on the streets.

Just as John was about to get in the car….which is numbered as MCP K-1[tongue firmly in cheek] he was happy the way the film was completed…..awesome pace….he left not before leaving us in splits….”usually Anurag’s films are postponed….but this was preponed….”….

OK….this shoot was special…..a family reunion. Anubhuti Kashyap the younger sibling gave a visit to brother dearest. She is not into films…but shares the passion. We did feel a little guilty of intruding their space….but we wanted to know what Anurag was like in his childhood. For starters he has written comic books and Anubhuiti has had the privilege to read them all. Hope if they are preserved they are published someday. Mind you this was when Mr. Kashyap was still in school. Primary school and in his own words his family felt “bacha to haatse gaya”

The Third Sibling

Abhinav Kashyap. He is into TV and will be making his film shortly. People must have seen him in Yuva. The guy who asks his sister to stand for the elections. The guy who is beaten up by Lallan and hospitalized. Michele meets him in the hospital and ransacks Gopal’s house…..remember…

Kamal Swaroop

We were talking of Rock Star personalities and hell raisers and I happened to mention India never had a Jim Morrison.

Anurag: we had …..but they did not die young……

Ok here is a small info on that guy [Ctrl C + Ctrl V from the net]

Kamal Swaroop is a film, television and radio director and screenwriter. In 1974 he graduated from the Film and Television Institute (FTII) and even his student works met with unusual international acclaim. He continued with postgraduate studies at the Institute. He assisted the director Richard Attenborough in the filming of Gandhi (1982). He made documentary as well as feature films (Filmfare Awards - Best Documentary 1975). He is currently working on the television series The Life and Times of Dadasaheb Phalke. Famously banned, a formal experimenter, Om-Dar-Ba-Dar is his master work.

Butter Fly Effect –Part 2

The Iyer Boy from Bombay and Delhi were taken to a dark room by the Boy from Banaras. It was all hush-hush. Banaras boy made sure that the Lady in the darkroom was gone. He is scared of her as she allows no one to intrude or watch when she is working. She was there…..we all scampered back. We waited …and we waited….and waited…and finally the Lady in the Dark room had left. We ran in glee…..Bombay Iyer and Delhi Iyer’s joy knew no bounds. Banaras Boy showcased his work….it was unfinished but a work of art. APPLAUD!!!!!!…

The US boy calls Banaras Boy. They Iyers are excited at what they had seen…Banaras boy was a bit cynical …..He said they might be saying that to make me happy. But the Iyers swear that they are overwhelmed……time will decide Banaras Boy says……

It’s late in the night and the Iyers and the Banaras boy take a Rick. Fit in their asses in the small space …..The rick stops at 4 bungalows…..we bid farewell and a happy journey to Banaras Boy who was to go to Russia the next day….till then…

The End

End Credits

One job that if I can put it that way never felt like one…

I don’t think [what say Kartik?] we would ever be able to recreate the things we put in if it was actually a job.

Ok Hang/shoot/punch me for missing this.

Anurag was asked to come to London by a man who wanted Anurag to write for him. Anurag did not know him…was not all that enthu abt. it.Then the man made an offer Anurag could not refuse [:-)]man said apart from flight tickets and accomodation..I’ll give you 2 lacs just for coming. Here is where Anurag beat the Don [he is a UK Billionaire...no Brother/Bhai] at his own game…..Anurag said keep the cash…give me DVDs worth that and I’ll come.

Guys sorry…if u cudnt understand the above post!!!
    Let me explain…
I too had the divine opportunity to visit the shoot on that last day for some time.
But it was because of my office ( On a Sunday, damn it ) that I reached there a bit late (actually, a lot late!!! Almost when it was about to end )
And after reading this post, when I get to know now, what all had happened before I reached there, I am a bit (?) frustrated!!!

I know Kartik will laugh at it!!!TO put in his words, “…Bhai, hum is frustration se gujar chuke hai. Now we have reached the next stage. We have become cynical…”

I said this cuz 2 dez after the shoot I happened to see GURU. I call this guy at 1 in the night ( 1 am….morning???) and literally puked my frustration on him. So i guess Kartik would react in a similar way to this too!!!

But giving it a second thought, I really wonder how these guys manage to get beyond this frustration of such bad films polluting the Indian screen………
I guess they see a new ray of hope in themselves!!!

    Hats off to you sir!!!^:)^
