“The response is so overwhelming, that all of us including my producer,John Abraham has decided that we will have three winners and we will use the same concepts with our photographs and there credits in the film and will duly anounce it in the papers and also there would be a cash prize..for all three..right now shooting in snow under fifteen degrees, a lots of posts are due, expect them soon..back in india on 23rd..

As per the latest info received from Anurag himself… The team of “No Smoking” will implement the winner’s concept and design for their official “No Smoking” poster…!!!
The Contest is to create a poster for the movie No Smoking. You can browse through “The No Smoking Blog” or Anurag’s “My Diary” or all posts on No Smoking by Anurag, Manjeet, Kartik – the authors, to get tips on what you would like to show or how you would like to design the poster.
What should be in the poster?
Anything! Set your imagination lose!!! Let your mind run wild… But we do have limits – nudity, extreme violence, anything that spells “TROUBLE”… please avoid such concepts in your posters.
Your posters can be images or just art or anything – the whole point is to keep your eye on this : Can this poster be used in the publicity for No Smoking? Can this post be put on billboards, in print, in advertisements etc…
What are the specs of the poster?
The poster should be a jpeg image that can be viewed on the internet via any commonly used web browser.
The size of the poster should not be more than 475pixels wide and 500 pixels high.
How do I submit my poster?
After you’ve made your poster, please upload it on your own website or any of the free image sites (flickr, imagehost, just do a google search)… Ensure your account has the following settings – “anyone can view your image” or “username – password not required” to view images.

The entire media is covering PFC each day… your name will get out there and we hope you will get the recognition… plus you will be invited to join the PFC Author Team which is one of the most desired memberships around.
There may be a few surprise gifts for the winner, but these aren’t confirmed yet and hence we can’t promise nor announce it.
The concept and design of the winning entry will be used by the No Smoking team to re-do the same winning poster, professionally, and will be used as one of the official posters of No Smoking
How many posters can I submit?
You can submit as many posters as you want (here we hope you are not making a 100 posters)… But each poster should be a seperate entry… you have to go in our comment section to publish your image for each separate poster that you make.
Who can enter this Contest?
Anyone and Everyone… EXCEPT… The Judges themselves You could be a graphic designer, an artist, some who draws/paints as a hobby, or someone who just wants to take up the challenge and scribble a poster out in Photoshop or a Paint/Brush software. Everyone is eligible to enter this contest.
I don’t have any actual images from “No Smoking”. How can I make a poster on No Smoking?

This is an awesome poster Orange. Very creative. I love the cigarette burn marks. The poster speaks volumes about the tone of the film and what to expect. Great job.

Hi everyone. You all seem to know each other here so I feel like a bit of a party crasher. Let me introduce myself. I’m a graphic designer and illustrator from the UK who also happens to adore John. I’m not kidding – that darling boy is my MUSE! (By the way, Venetia is my real name. I’m FAR TOO OLD to be bothered with pseudonyms!) Anyway, I thought I’d enter your competition if that’s OK. I’ve done four posters already and plan to do some more today – just letting the ideas flow at the moment. The standard of the creations submitted on this page so far is pretty good so I’m really pushing myself! I’m a notorious dunce when it comes to putting things on the web, but my friend has said she’ll post them for me on her free account thingy. Is that alright?
Oh yes, and I don’t know if it’s because I’m on a Mac, but posting this message was MURDER! Every time I click my mouse on the page, all the type becomes underlined and I get taken to another page. So I wrote this in Word and pasted it (in between getting taken to the other page – grrrr). Anyway, will get my ideas posted in the next few days. Love to you all. Vxx
Oh Venetia – I know what you mean. I also use Macintosh. I thought I was only having the problem and I thought it was because I use older version of Mac OS. But anyway, to view this webpage we need to use either Netscape or The Big Blue E or Mozilla. Or when you click on the comment box quickly enter esc, so it does not take you to Suparn Verma’s author page. Then you will be able to write straight onto the comment box.
Anyway regarding this competition.. I am not a graphic designer or an artist, but I have this line in mind:

Thanks OM, but regarding the title, It has anyways no connection with the previous title. Its a Teaser Poster keeping in mind the current title ‘No Smoking’. Actually just wanted to portray that somebody has scribble against the Statutory warning to depict the Film Title making its Inujurious to Health. I Think the 2nd poster would make it more simpler…

anyway, the poster is a bit scrappy cos i did it on (mac) paint, so you can see ’sm’ and ‘king’ are kind of not in same line.. etc.

Hey Oz, i have a little query, can we use photographs of the principal cast downloaded from the net? are you sure it wont cause any copyright problems, since the contest is now for ‘official’ posters, and we are not quite sure which professional photographer shot those photos?
Maybe someone on the sets can take some pictures of them(with green-screen bkgnd) and have them posted for us to use, or is it too much too ask? I’m curious.
Well, of the designs so far I REALLY like babasko’s blue poster – very striking. And the one with nude John (of course!). And I think Honhaar’s cartoon is great – VERY different and eye-catching. I finished my designs last night so I’ll try to post them up soon. Vxx

OK, this has been a wide brief, so I’ve come at it
from all angles. For my first poster, I’ve featured
John heavily because if I’m honest, he’s the MAIN
reason I would my seek this film out. However, I’ve
deliberately made the image dark and grainy to
indicate that this role is likely to be very different
from some he’s done in the past.

I like green and it’s rarely used on posters so I
thought I’d give this a shot. Plus there seems to be
a croc print on John’s bathroom wall so I echoed it in
the bottom of the poster. The overall effect is
supposed to be a keyhole glimpse into John’s
character’s world.

OK, this is the romance angle. As John’s character
goes into rehab to save his marriage I’m assuming
there is SOME element of romance in the film.
Hopefully the dead rose and scratchy typeface take
some of the ‘Mills and Boon’ edge off it.

- Great going guys!!! Just a word of caution: since you all are uploading images on free photo sites… open up a couple of accounts to upload 2 – 3 images in each account. Uploading more posters in the same account may quickly use up the limited bandwidth per month the sites allow for free account…

Aw, thanks everyone, for your wonderful comments. I really enjoyed doing them, a good creative exercise. It was really great being able to combine what I do for a living with something involving John. (I love that darling boy SO MUCH it’s not even funny!) I think 8 designs are quite enough though, so I’ll be calling it a day now.

I scrolled down this list, ocassionally stopping here and there until Madhumita’s poster came into view. This is creativity at its best!
Simple, succinct and captivating.
Madhumita, what do you do? Are you a professional?
I prefer something between the distant one and the closeup one. The margins on the closeup one should be wider. The “N” is a little too close to the edge. And you can zoom out a little bit more.

Hi Oz…just wanted to know how one posts these pictures is the messages. Also, can one post the picture on any site including one’s personal blog page? There are some interesting concepts here, though most are pretty predictable and amateurish. What I personally feel is that the use of graphic images of cigarettes or smoking should be kept to a minimum- that would avoid causing trouble with the anti-tobacco lobby, plus it would be much more challenging, creative and interesting. Also using Johns images from magazines etc and just adding the title is not exactly innovative, as many have done. Oops- I hope I don’t sound pseudo-intellectual or arrogant- just my opinion. Looking forward to hearing from you and maybe, putting in my entry too!

i was thinkng about making something else, and this just happened.
#169 by Faheem is fabulous on so many levels. First, color. Not the standard black, white and red/orange. The blue in the smoke is so subtle, it demands a second look. The image on the right hand side, the screaming figure is also not noticed on first glance. Phenomenal visuals. I don’t love the tag line, but that’s an easy change. – Congratulations!
In a movie theater, which one of these would stand out? On a billboard which would work? That’s the question isn’t it?

I feel a person who has copied a complete design and pasted it as his own should be banned .
Using images to create your own design is one thing but copying the whole design and pasting it is wrong , it takes away from the integrity of the contest and there is no way an image like this could be used for the promotion of the film .

On this whole issue of copying, I think we need to realize that a lot of us, myself included, have taken pre-existing images and re-worked them to suit an idea to represent “No Smoking”. Perhaps the rules should be explained a little clearer. Because one has to realize that if the winning poster contains pre-existing images/photography, these things rightfully belong to whatever photographer/agency that used them initially. The No Smoking team will in turn have to license that imagery to use in their poster and they will incur costs for it.
So before people spend time and energy on designing these posters, just something to think about. Maybe I am wrong. Please correct me if I am.
= Vijay, The winning poster will be reshot and redone by the No Smoking team with their inputs. None of the original images used in the winning poster will be used. Have mentioned this is the post too.

Hi Everyone, its fantastic what you guys are doing and i love every bit of it. My Name is David Sandeep Robert, an aspiring director from Hyderabad.
I so much wanted to make the posters for GULAL but… hope i will someday. when Anurag told me he was gonna make a film “No Smoking” ideas were flaring up in my mind & i mailed him asking if i could design the poster… didnt knew was he was planning a poster contest… i spent whole dec 05 – 2006 writing a script titled CALL CENTER, which Anurag Kashyap had gone through and said “It works for me” “bahut acha likha”
My friends at Hyderabad were gonna Produce it. Everything was going fine (i even finished the storyboard)…till the actor (anurag personally helped me by talking to the actor to take a look at what i have) who i wanted to play the lead wanted to do commercial films down south for another couple of years so he declined. I requested him to see the storyboard just once before he declined. He never did. My producers felt that the film wont work if he isnt acting in it.So they backed out.
I never give up, i made rounds in Hyderabad to find another producer..this time i had a good actor who was willing to do my film once we find a producer. But the telugu producers couldnt think of producing a english/hindi film.
I came to Mumbai on 11th jan 07 to meet some production houses to see if they will fund my project. I tried to reach Anurag but he was busy filming. While I was making my rounds a friend called up and told me to check the MID DAY news paper. And I saw the CONTEST for Poster Design for NO SMOKING.
I finished my meetings and packed my bags to get back to hyderabad only to start working on the NO SMOKING POSTER DESIGN CONTEST.
Its not a contest for me … its a tribute to the passionate writer / director and a wonderful human being.

Hai OZ, and everyone else..
First and foremost..my apologies for not clearing up the confusion in the past weeks. I was extremely busy travelling and didnt have a chance to visit PFC. Lemme clear up the confusion.
I am a filmmaker who directs ads in india, singapore and in indonesia (thats where i live). Due to a foundation in multimedia and graphics design, i have been designing and shooting for ads since 2000. Some of these ads have been selected and used by other people. I have never had the copyrights to most of the posters i have designed (hell, i dont even have copies of some of them) mainly because these ads were photographed while I was in college and therefore there is no such thing as copyrights and even if there was, the college owns it all. So the college appointed me to help them do a health campaign poster for the ANTI SMOKERS there..which is like Alcohol Anonymous. So i shot the photo in 2002.
Secondly, The picture of the cigarette with the smoke is quite common so am sure atleast a million others have similar posters or photographs.
I just saw the link in ads of the world. I dont know who this gyan somebody is but the whole idea about an embryo is an amazing one. I DONT claim credit to that ad. It just so happens that I had shot a similar frame of cigarette and we both made it for health campaigns ..just different health campaigns in different countries.
Beyond all these explanations, OZ, if you feel the poster is unfit to participate in the contest..you may go ahead and remove it..no issues there..
I have been in the creative industry for 6 years now and I know the pain of having someone steal your work..I’d never do it to anyone.
Okkkkkk..now for the good news…I am going to direct my first tamil commercial feature film. Yayyyyy! Thats what kept me away from PFC for so long…
I hope that this clears up all the confusion.

The response is so overwhelming, that all of us including my producer,John Abraham has decided that we will have three winners and we will use the same concepts with our photographs and there credits in the film and will duly anounce it in the papers and also there would be a cash prize..for all three..right now shooting in snow under fifteen degrees, a lots of posts are due, expect them soon..back in india on 23rd..

In the Early 2005 my short film CHAY FEET NEECHAY was screened at Hyderabad Film Festival. It was an amazing experience because everyone who saw that movie appreciated me. The media was impressed to see that I made the film all by my self (pre & post production) but felt that it had FACORY SEAL all over it. I told the media that I made that film to show it to RGV so that he might hire me as a director at Factory. I had been making rounds to RGV

This is regarding the poster on roll 320, I have used the hozirontal format (landscape). As per contest specs W=475 and H=500 is max for the posters. But that will be suitable only for a potrait (vertical) format poster?
My poster posted on 320 roll is the Landscape format so i had reversed the specs.
Kindly let me know if i can use the landscape design format with those specs.

It was better if some clue about the genere of the film was given, Its a thriller, a black comedy, or a dark film. Just in one word, so that creativity of people can go in right direction. One word does not reveal anything about the film.

Couple of months ago i was with Shri. Ramesh Prasad ji ( son of Late Shri L.V Prasad, well known Producer,writer, director & actor who also owns Prasad Labs).
I was pitching him my CALL CENTER SCRIPT & STORY BOARD. He was impressed looking at the work.But he said that he was interested in Family entertainers.( Prasad Labs never
produced films after Shir L.V Prasad ji passed away.)
I was dismayed. I put my entire 06 into it. I finally had a hero but no producer. I planned for a talent hunt. Nothing was working.
I came out of his IMAX office and i saw a Poster titled UMBRELLA. It is the most amazing poster i saw in recent times… I went closer to check out the credits..is it dream works or pixar or disney prod??? to my utter surprise it was
a UTV production …. and guess whos directing it … VISHAL BHARADWAJ Ji.
My face lit up. I finally knew we are back into making fantastic cinema and this time on par with international standards.

let ur passion for creativity drive u rather than ur ego….never ever feel insecure….
…david, a word of advice (positive man..)..last couple of ur posters r not good enough…..u seem to be giving more importance to the text on the poster rather than the look and feel of it….frankly, i did not like ur last 3 posters (take it as constructive Criticism)….just keep in mind that a man walking along juhu chowpatty will not bother to read the text …the first thing that will catch his attention is the beauty of the poster (unless u r a maniratnam or a aditya chopra (or) u have shahrukh or/and amitji on the poster),….only then they read the text (it is different in the case of a newspaper ad., where u have the time to relax and read the whole ad.)…u were doing very well…so relax and design…. this not the end of it all….u have it in u..but dont be hasty…take ur time and design and i’m sure u will be the best of the lot (ur supposed to be a film maker man!).
note: ur earlier designs were visually good, but after someone accused u of not having a concept, u have totally devoted urself to the concept rather than the beauty which u were (are) very good at…..
good luck david,…come up with something very interesting (visually & conceptwise)..u can do it.
Note 2: i am a civil engineer who wrote, composed and sang a whole album (remixes included) at my own expense…..i have only got positive reviews for it (but i never went and fell at someone’s feet just to get my album released)..now i have decided that these songs (which i am very passionate about), will be a part of my first movie (if there is one….hahaha…u never know i may be dead in a train blast tommorrow)…..so, the bottom line (according to me) is ‘do ur best and u will make it).

Sandeep – You have come up with a ‘line’ of posters and the concept sounds pretty convincing…Good Job !!!
I just wanted to give a brief overview of my concepts for my entries.
My idea was to basically create posters with the following.
1. Create a good visual idea to attract someone looking at the poster.
2. Say something about the film , but not to much ( Very Imp).
3. Don’t make the poster look like an ad by the anti-tobacco industry, because then it would look more like a public awareness campaign.
Here is my list
#209,210(Version 1 and 2)
These posters show John behind what looks like a prison except the bars are cigrattes , i think that basically says something about the film in an interesting visual way. Hence the tag line ” THIS YEAR BREAK FREE”.
#239(Version 3)
This poster has John sitting on what looks like a burning cigratte which clearly shows that when the cigratte burns down so will he. Hence the tag line “HOW LONG CAN YOU WAIT?”. I personally feel it got that black humor quality to it as when u look at it you laugh but then u also realise what will happen to him is not good, i think that goes with the theme of the film.
#253(VERSION 4)
This poster shows John being held at gun point except its someone’s hand with a cigrattee implying that every time he tries someone tempts him back into the habit , hence the tagline
“SOMETIMES SAYING NO AINT EASY”
#277(Version 5)
With this i wanted to do something a bit funny
so i decided to just go with a suprised john cover his face up with ash and his body resembles a burning cig. The tagline here reveal my intention” WHEN THE WOMAN OF YOUR DREAMS DOESNT RECOGNIZE YOU ITS TIME TO CHANGE”.
#302 ( Version 6)
After reading up on the film i thought its got a surreal quality to it and i wanted to do something like that . This poster shows part of John’s face with smoke coming out and the following written on his face ” NIGHTMARES SACRIFICE LOVE CIGRATTES TEMPTATION”. I just thought a viewer looking at this odd poster would find it interesting.
#330 (Version 7)
This poster shows john in a snowy environment with a few tracks if u look closely . He looks to be in a pensive mood as if deciding what to do or which way to go. I chose the snowy look because i know some parts of the film are shot in the snow. The tagline ” CHOOSE YOUR PATH” clearly says that in life as in this film we must make our choice.
#339 ( Version
This one has John looking right at us with ash blowing over his face with the tagline ” ALL THAT REMAINS IS ASH”.
#386 (Version 9)
This one has John looking sideways with Smoke coming out of something and if u look closely there is a image of Ayesha in there. It basically says something about the film , about the choice John needs to make and if he does not succeed he might lose everything. Hence ” BREAK FREE OR LOSE EVERYTHING”
#387 (Version 10)
This shows JOHN completely buried in Ashes only his face visible implying he still has time to do something. The tagline “DON’T LET THE ASHES BURY YOU” explains this.
#388 (Version 11)
My personal fav , both visually and conceptually.
Here u have john looking back at us and he is slowly being taken over my smoke.I think it says something about smoking , it says something about the film and is visually interesting.
TAGLINE “THE SMOKE WILL CONSUME YOU”.
#389 (Version 12)
I wanted to do a poster with the entire cast but i did not just want to stick their images on the poster so i decided to go with a word under their names representing their role in the film .
with John it was Addiction , with ayesha it was inspiration as i feel she inspires or motivates him to quit , with rawal it was consequences as i feel he plays a guy who shows john the consequences and shorey as his friend who tempts him.
#415 (Version 13)
This one is in red , again with the cast and john has a look on his face which shows confusion. Tagline says ” HIS CHOICE WILL EFFECT EVERYONE”.
#431 (Version 14)
This one has a big burning cigratte with everyone shown inside it which clearly implies that they will burn with the cigratte. The tagline shows hope in that if John is able to break free he could survive. Tagline “Break Free or lose everything”.

Concepts of my posters ( linking to the main concept as mentioned in roll 438(currently thats the number it shows)
Poster 291.
1. The local train is the heart line of Mumbai.
Any one can recognize the title board as its very familiar (mumbaikars & outsiders who traveled by local) with that of the regular Local station boards.
2. As the stations are littered by some commuters, it can also be a campaign to clean the locals stations. Like throwing the cigarette butts in the bins and not spitting out gutka in the local train windows / platforms etc…
3. The entire poster shoot can be done there at any local station / local train with the cast and the crew or only the cast as per the Directors vision.
( Shooting pics early mornings at VT would be fantastic as the platforms are less crowded and the light rays falling through the shelters of VT make it look all the more dramatic.)
4.one railcar in the local can be fully hired as a part of NO SMOKING campaign and a trip from one north to south Mumbai. Media can be of great help.

Concept for poster 307
The business cards used in the poster directly implies not to smoke as it also bears the logo of no smoking along with the title.
The unit can print business cards for the launch of the film and can be distributed to the celebrities and other film personalities by the film makers/ actors of the movie No smoking. These cards can be clamped so that they can be easily put it to the pockets / hang it around their necks etc..
First square in upper left hand corner shows that he the protoganist has just started smoking. Upper right hand square shows the smoke coming upto his nose. Third square in lower left hand corner shows smoke has covered his 3/4 of his face. Lower right hand square shows the extend to which his journey of smoking has landed him to what state of health. Here I have shown his entire face and its surrounding with growing smoke and center with RED stub of cigarette, engulfing himself and surrounding. RED IS A SIGNAL TO SMOKERS TO STOP SMOKING.

This concept I have visualised in a manner where a chain smoker smokes packets of cigarettes every days. He sucks many cigarettes and when he realises cigarette is sucking him, its too late. While he is in that smoking mess, he realizes the bad effects of smoking cigarettes. Now he wants break free, tilt in pic shows his unsuccessful struggle to free himself and helplessness.

Concepts for the campaign
The puffs making the rings shown the in the poster (306)can be used in creating the title design for the film.
The words like CARCINOGEN and NICOTINE can also be used linking them with the movie title NO SMOKING. (372,380 also similar posters in the black series)
The statistics can be used to educate and inform the general public.(370,371,372,380)
This poster (338)gives a sarcastic dedication of the film. Its concept is simple, make comments which hit the smokers but in a way their ego is not hurt yet they at least know what they have been doing by smoking.

I forgot to explain about the caption “living is injurious to health” in my poster.
I have no idea about the story line of this film. I am guessing that its a crime thriller and I think its not a film about problems caused by smoking.
