NO SMOKING : Prayogshala Mein Prayog

Anurag’s favorite part of the film has started. It’s Baba Bengali’s legacy, with much awaited Anurag’s very own Gabbar, Paresh Rawal taking the centre stage! An old deserted mill touching the east sea coast in Colaba is the stage for Prayogshala. Its became a favourite spot for Bollywood after the dock scenes of ‘Hum’ and ‘Agneepath’ were shot. For films shot in Bombay vast silent space with high roof n walls within the city limits is ideal for shooting. The studios appear like a warehouse, even warehouses are used as studios ? A film maker inclined towards horror genre would be excited to have the ‘khundars’ here. But, the sets of No Smoking are very different and interesting, and can only be seen in the film. Just to give an example, there is a kind of magic box, where a person disappears when kept in it. Wasiq Khan’s team came up with a neat set up to pull it off. The get up of Paresh Rawal also can not be shared.

I heard John saying, “In this film 90% of the times, I am wearing suits or I have bare body shots with nothing in between”. There was a scene, where John had to break a Glass door. He had to physically sabotage the door. In the process he had a slight cut.

Anurag has a knack of casting people working on sets. This time it was the turn of the location manager Sanjay Oberoi. Now Sanjay dresses up in Paresh Rawal’s henchman clothes, away from his production buddies. Paresh Rawal’s henchmen come in all shapes n sizes from tall, heavy to tiny n average.

To my surprise Paresh is tall and young, compared to his on screen looks. I had an image of 5’6” to 5’8” he is around 5’10” and looks 10 years younger. The eyes look very intense. Giving a feel of a dacoit rather than a funny Maharashtrian character in Hera Pheri. Won’t be making any revelations by telling you that he is a wonderful actor. He reads his lines, remembers them and delivers them effortlessly. The ease he displays in performance, reflects his tremendous confidence. Two camera set up is been used to get the maximum out of Paresh’s dates. One camera getting a wide shot and the other one getting a mid/ close up shot. After pack up Paresh was roaming around in T-shirt and shorts. He was looking young. A lot of people might not recognize that it’s him in casual attire.

Even the spot boys are stars on the sets. Their character is unique in its own way. Two of the most popular spot boys are Bhaktawar and Jalwa. Bhaktawar has so many visas on his passport that the Ads are envious of him. All the Ads won’t be going to Siberia for the outdoor schedule, but Bhaktawar would be a necessity? Jalwa has a script, which he wants to make into a feature someday. That made me wonder if any spotboy has risen up the ranks in Bollywood. Lawerence D’Souza was the answer provided. He started at the lowest rank, became assistant cameraman, cinematographer and ultimately a director. ‘Sajan’ is a superhit to his credits. I remember seeing a advt. of a Bhojpuri film directed by Lawerence recently in a Hindi newspaper.

The other person would be Ashok Mehta, arguably the numero-uno cinematographer in Bombay. There were few others names not as big as the ones mentioned above. That gives you an idea how this industry is. It consists of people from every walk of life, coming from different backgrounds, variable educational levels and dreams of making it big one day. End of the day film making is a very basic process. The ones really passionate about the process do the good work. Then there are a lot of people attracted towards the glamour, fame and money part of it. While some become successful, a lot of them don’t. It’s again something without a fix formula with lot of factors playing important part. An actor once told me the biggest thing in this industry is luck, then it’s your contacts and ultimately comes your talent. So far my experiences and observations agree with what he said. The other interesting thing I heard that this is the only profession, which chooses you rather than you choosing it.

31st December is the last day of shoot here. The next shoot is of a song/dance sequence in a night club. Vikram Motwane would be doing the job for Anurag. AK is least bothered and trusts Vikram completely.

  2. manjeet singh on January 1st, 2007 1:37 am

The gateway shot was scheduled for yesterday, if I remember correctly. Must have been completed.

    Nice work.

Hey Manjeet.. if its not too cheeky of me, is it possible to pay Paresh a compliment from me??

People seem to have forgotten his role as Pinky in ‘Daud’, which is by far the most original and hilarious screen villians played in hindi cinema..well, atleast i think so!!
I thought he was brilliant in ‘Daud’ and too good to be true in ‘Yun Hota To Kya Hota’!!

Please, please, please let him know???[-o<[-o<[-o<

  6. sangeeta on January 1st, 2007 7:18 am

Steve, You a big Paresh fan?

  7. steve on January 1st, 2007 8:15 am

Sangeeta, I have appreciated him from the earlier films he had done, but when I saw ‘Daud’ i was in stiches!
He was menancing and humerous at the same time… you have to see it to believe it.
You take the character seriously, but he cracks you up too.

So quite natuarally i was annoyed when ppl woke up after ‘Hera Pheri’ and raved about how great he was, which hwe is, but he had been for ages!

But I guess, not everyone has seen ‘Daud’ henna??

  8. manjeet singh on January 1st, 2007 8:36 am

Paresh has been casted into lot of comic roles. His looks are very intense. Would like to see him a serious villain role. He wont need any dialogues just look would do :)

  9. Sana on January 1st, 2007 8:56 am

    Happy New Year.

I love reading these posts, they are packed with so many details that i feel as though im there witnessing all this.

  10. sangeeta on January 1st, 2007 9:01 am

Nope i’ve seen Daud Steve, and i agree he was very much underrated as an actor but Daud didn’t exactly appeal to the masses so its understandable why he didn’t appeal to many at that time.

  11. Honhaar Goonda on January 1st, 2007 10:51 am

What song is it? And is it going to be used as a promotional video or it will be in the film?

  12. manjeet singh on January 1st, 2007 11:01 am

Not heard the song. My guess is that it would be a part of the film.
The other unique thing about the songs is that all six of them are based on ciggarettes:) Gulzar sahib has written them, Vishal has given the music. One of the song has been sung by Adnan Sami.

  13. sangeeta on January 1st, 2007 11:38 am

all 6 songs based on cigarettes, hmm this shall be interesting.

  14. steve on January 1st, 2007 12:12 pm

Anyone remember the song ‘Cigarette chhod de’ from ‘Darna Manna Hai’??

Quite a good song…ope these songs wil be similar.

  15. Windmill on January 1st, 2007 7:25 pm

Its nice to read about the set activites… makes you feel you’re there. Keep up the good work, man.

Actually, Paresh was appreciated also in Andaz Apna Apna, which came before Daud. Of course, Hera Pheri is being talked about more cos it was a big hit. He has tried some negative roles earlier but his real flare has been in comedy. To me, he cracked me even in AAA.

  16. steve on January 1st, 2007 8:51 pm

Windmill, true.. he has done comedy before, but the way he played the role of the villian, with comical touches was absolutely fantastic!

Infact, for me, Paresh was ‘the’ hero of ‘Daud’.
It may have flopped, but Ramu got the casting right.

Re ‘Andaz…’ well, my cousin tells me time and again that this is a hugely underrated comedy, as you have to see the film many, many times to get all the one liners.

If im honest I have seen it, but only once and that too, w-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-y back in ‘94 (or was it even before then??)

Guess i’ll have to revisit that film too at somepoint, alongside ‘Dil Pe Mat Le..’

  17. Vasanbala on January 1st, 2007 10:41 pm

on Daud…..somewhere i read ramu say “in the first scene manoj did the scene so seriously that it fucked the tone of the film completely…people did not know what to expect…a serious thriller or a wacky trip…” probably thats where the genius of Paresh Rawal came in to play…probably my next post will be on just that. PINKY

  18. manjeet singh on January 1st, 2007 10:46 pm

Most of the shoot is over. Only important part left is that of siebria. Offcourse the songs are left.

The other thing, which I did not mention is that the film is been edited alongside the shoot. The exposed film cans are sent to the lab asap, developed, scanned (telecined) and edited.

  19. Vasanbala on January 1st, 2007 11:00 pm

    hey manjeet,

about ur post. i had called gautham on the 30th he said there was no shoot on the 31st?????anyways i am nursing a broken foot…can’t go anywhere.

  20. manjeet singh on January 1st, 2007 11:54 pm

    Hi Vasan,

I was not there on shoot for the last few days. Guess they must have postponed the shoot. Not aware of the happenings..did not talk to anyone on phone either.

  21. steve on January 2nd, 2007 3:57 am

Vasanbala, that has just made my day!!
Looking forward to meeting your Pinky!!!\:d/\:d/\:d/\:d/\:d/

  22. Windmill on January 2nd, 2007 12:58 pm

    steve,

it was released in ‘94. for me, herapheri and AAA are among the top of most liked hindi comedies. your cousins are spot on with re to repeated viewings to catch all the one liners in AAA.

  23. randramble on January 4th, 2007 6:09 pm

I recently caught AAA. It is one of the best comedies in Hindi in recent times. However, it was less complicated than the stuff dished out by Kamal Haasan - Crazy Mohan combination.

  24. yingchuk on February 6th, 2007 2:48 pm

    Hey mangeet
Wow, your stories sounds great. So, seriously r u saying that you wrote the script of the film No Smoking. this is very surprising. I have never really met someone online who wanted to be a part of the indian film industry and has achieved it. wow, congratulation. I am a student at the University of Minnesota, USA. I am an undergrad student majoring in biology. I am huge fan of the indian film industry and really badly wanted to be a part of it. Except the things is my parents doesn’t approve me of going into the film line.. they want me to become doctor. I am preity sure that you are busy working with your film. But, if you do have any time please do contact me. i would really appreciate it. it will be nice to talk to someone who has worked hard to be part of the industry. thank you
