No Smoking : Pictures from Colaba Shoot
Manjeet Singh | Exclusive, Movies | December 4, 2006 at 1:01 pm
The location was Colaba. The place where I spent my early childhood…It was sort of nostalgic … Today was a day where it took lots n lots of efforts for very little screen time..On screen it might look simple but it just takes so much time n effort to make these shots possible…Pictures will give you an idea of what I am talking about. The sound department was not needed as no dialogues were spoken. Only John’s shots in the car were taken from inside as well as outside the car… …He was made to drive in South Mumbai or town side as its called by mumbaiya public… The camera setups were very interesting indeed, more like Hollywood style!.. Every filmmaker would love to lay his hands on it… I was amazed to see the designed structures, which took for ever to be set up! Ninad who designs these grids told that this kind of setup has not been used in Bombay before… John’s car was placed on a car carrier platform, a camera was placed on the bonnet, with ability on move on the rail as the car passed in the streets of old city .. See the pics!!

Could we not have the pictures presented in some kind of slide show format? it’s just a suggestion so that the site doesn’t slow down and also makes it easier to see the pictures without clicking each one. Flickr is a good site to host them from?
And thanks once again Manjeet. PS – Can we get more snaps of John and maybe one of Raj Kumar too ;) or email me some sneaky ones – emails on my blog
- Sangeeta, if you know of a good plugin for wordpress that can do slideshows, please email me about it. Flickr is out of question… they offer limited bandwidth per account which in PFC’s case will be used up in 24 hours.
Okay Oz i’ll email some useful links to you or Honhaar. This site’s growing day by day so it might be good if a gallery page could be set up or something.
Once this movie releases this site will shoot up even more.
nice stuff manjeet, especially doubling up as john.. those camera configs sure do look complicated, like you mentioned. on another note, would it be possible for you or kartik to talk to the art directors on set to get an idea of how they find their locations and provide some insights into how they build the set?
Good photos explaining the setup…
I remember our shoot in Ramoji Film City – three guys kept shaking the car on its suspension as lights were moved on movable frames by the windows to give the effect of a moving car to a stationary car. It is a make believe world, my friend. How well can you make us believe it?
sangeeta …
Raajkumar is the guy wearing the blue addidas cap … in the “little-big-boss” picture
2nd row from bottom … 4th pic from left .. ;)
Sangeeta: Kartik is correct!
Striker: Locations are spotted by the ADs. I guess they show pictures to AK and then the production people get the required permission for the shoot. Art people have to know so many things. Sometimes their work resembles carpenters, plumbers, chefs, interior designers,
Car designers what ever you can see in the frame. They have their own world. The art department is very professional here. They get things done fast and real!
Vasu: Yeah its making people believe at the end. Even Hollywood uses the technique u mentioned. Its an old one. You can see in so many films. Right now I can remember a scene from ‘Pulp fiction’, where Bruce willis is sitting in a cab after killing a boxer after a match and the driver is a female. You can easily make out its fake. In these type of shots u can see a distinct line which seprates the object from the background. But this shoot will have real background.
Thanks Boys ;)
He looks ratehr serious (Karak) hmm wouldn’t want to disturb him in work mode
and more pictures would be appreciated ;)
Striker,
lot goes into getting the right shooting location for any film…since AK and all of us at NO SMOKING hate shooting in studio’s…it was quite a task finding the right location for the film…there are lot of other factors that go into deciding the location to shoot, apart from the suitability as per the script…due to lack of time i won’t be able to get into the detail of it, promise the detail in one of my future posts…but it took us almost one and a half months to get the right loctions for the film…still we have to finalise some…
doesn’t it annoy you guys when the public all stand around and watch? I mean have there ever been any instances where they created a problem for the shooting or has it all been civilised experiences?
I’ve never seen a outdoor shoot – visited a few studio shoots in my last trip to India and it was all rather surreal
Not civilised at all…It’s hell of an exprience…shooting on streets…bombay streets…there are problems…great one’s…but there are solutions too…great one’s!
Witnessing an indoor studio shoot as an audience is the most boring exprience!
>>Witnessing an indoor studio shoot as an audience is the most boring exprience!
well the first one wasn’t long thank god but i got the opportunity to talk to people so it was okay, but yeah they aren’t exactly thrilling experiences esp as when you’re slightly impatient. Actually I think song shoots are even more slow.
I’m yet to see a shoot over here in UK, now that will be interesting. I’m always amused when i see shots in central London of guys and girls dancing in the streets
‘I’m always amused when i see shots in central London of guys and girls dancing in the streets’
Suggestion…Stop going to the AMUSEMENT PARK!
ah can’t help it amusement park comes onto our tv screens eventually.
Sangeeta: Their are so many units in London shooting. Mainly coz of the subsidy offered by the UK Gov. from the tax returns. Some people just stay back and work for other units. Right now coz of winter things might have slowed down.
Striker: For locations any one can suggest. For eg. I will be taking some pics of new bombay and showing to Rajkumar. If he likes he would suggest AK. Anurag does not want new buildings but Rajkumar wants to see the pics as something might click, you never know.
Oz: I am sure you know this simple solution already but let me go ahead and suggest it, since I do this sometimes. Software like Picasa let you make a simple web gallery of your pictures (2 or 3 different styles with a couple of color combos). So you could create that with your pics and just copy paste code into Wordpress’s page creater and do a post here linking to that page. But with Picasa, you will get only a single column of pics. And you also have to make sure that your hosting plan supports this.
For e.g., I created a page showing all my banner images, after modifying the HTML generated by Picasa.
Anantha: But can the pictures be enlarged? It looks more or less like what we have here.
thanks rajkumar/manjeet.. the art departments fascinate me as to how efficient and good they are.. i sure as hell am not an arts & crafts person (well, arts maybe) so i’m in awe of these guys that can assume the roles of “carpenters, plumbers, chefs, interior designers” etc. would love to hear their account of how they do what they do..
nothing like shooting on location though.. studios are too (:| i think the worst studio-built set i’ve seen in recent times was vikram bhatt’s “footpath” (aftab, bipasha, emraan’s debut)
Oz,
flickr’s pro account gives you 2gb upload limit per month which should be enough for PFC. there is no download limit, so no problems there, any number of views and downloads.
its about 25dollars a year, so its a good buy comparing it with the bandwidth costs that u might incur by hosting images in the main PFC site itself.
but i think its better to host images on the main site itself. the image’s URL will bear the name of the site, which is good. so anybody who shares the links to the images will know its from passionforcinema.com
this is a list of plugins available as given in the wordpress site – http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/Images
and u can look into their forums to know what people are saying about image gallery plugins – http://wordpress.org/search/best+image+gallery+plugin?forums=1
u can even post a question there.
could be useful – http://theblogjoint.com/2006/08/29/top-wordpress-plugins/
this – http://plugins.atterberry.net/lazy-k-gallery/ -
plugin seems to be good. its a modification of an already popular plugin. modified to make it less complicated to use. –
got to know about this from the comments in the above link listing the top plugins.
hope this helps
- Kalki, Thanks for all the links and references… have been through some of them… Yep, it’s much better to host images on one’s own servers than elsewhere… I do remember going through lazy k but didn’t think much about it then… will give it a second look today… thanks again for taking the time… in return for all the work… I would like to invite you on the PFC Author team… email me…
Catching up on old posts after two weeks, and this one is for Sangeeta….
My experiences shooting in public have been great. I recently did a day-long shoot with some well-known Hollywood/TV actors. The public is great about being quiet and polite while watching the shooting, just the opposite of what may be expected. I found the same thing while shooting an indie film this last summer….
One of the principals of said ful is HUGE here on TV among a specific demographic, and the kids were polite about lining up for autographs and pictures between scenes. Even better, said actor was gracious and excited about the whole thing.
The energy that the cast and crew got from the crowd was great. I spent a lot of time explaining shots and the movie with curious passersby, and had a blast just meeting people. But, I wonder how much of that respect is because here in So Cal you can’t throw a rock on a Saturday without hitting a film crew? The average Californian knows how to act when they see a camera….
There is a shoot going on outside of my bedroom window right now at the abandoned building across the street….
The only time I have ever had “interesting” experiences with the public involved the OC Sheriffs department, shotguns, and an innocent public utilities worker who was just passing by. And, the residents of the community we were shooting in that day. That is a story for another time….
T!
Just had a quick peek at your profile to see where the experiences hail from, your profile reads well, actually it’s pretty damn impressive.
Outdoor shoots do seem to be more of a blast from what people have said. I guess in some cities movie shooting is the norm so it’s just an everyday thing but to a passer-by who wonders how things click behind the camera they’ll always be curious and even slightly star/movie struck. I do hope I get to experience this myself one day.
Oh and I’m intrigued by your “interesting” story now, so do spill or maybe something you could share on your website as i’ve just clicked on that too.
Sangeeta,
I will email you with the interesting story directly. I always feel awkward telling movie stories on a public forum as I am a worker bee, not a creative person, and therefore don’t feel as if the story is mine to tell. That, and I hate mentioning names and projects (unless it is something that is directly mine) as it feels like name dropping.
Hell, that is why my boss loves me, I let him take credit for my hard work and I never drop hints around the office that it is really my work ;)
Excellent t!
That will do me perfectly.
