Interesting but too much in too little for me! I am not sure what the movie is about… If that’s the intention, it drives home the point. Liked the logo the best…

  2. suchita b on August 26th, 2007 12:17 am

    John is looking delicious!

  3. oz on August 26th, 2007 12:26 am

I kind of liked how it starts… but then too many things are stuffed in… and I didn’t quite like how “jub bhi cigarette jalti hain” is brought in and plays as a background, sort of a dampner… but when Paresh Rawal comes in the tempo picks up…

  4. wb on August 26th, 2007 12:27 am

    nosmokingthefilm.com!!! WTF??? :o

  5. oz on August 26th, 2007 12:28 am

exactly wb… it goes to a zippo lighter site…

  6. wb on August 26th, 2007 1:13 am

no oz, it’s not even that! the site is a spurious rogue site like searchportal etc … this one belongs to some nuseek

  7. Mainak on August 26th, 2007 1:20 am

    looks awesome to me.
The paresh rawal part seems to be in the realm of surreal. Reminded me of The Game.
    Awesome.

  8. Raj on August 26th, 2007 2:24 am

Awesome, though i saw it in a low res, still can figure out quite a bit, that rajiv ravi did a splendid job….looking forward this october.

  9. ajay on August 26th, 2007 3:21 am

    chaeers…anurag!

  10. Shatrughan on August 26th, 2007 3:31 am

Looking interesting but not very catchy…

  11. Venetia on August 26th, 2007 4:20 am

Whoa! I think it looks fabulous - surreal and extremely intruiging. And the design and photography are splendid. I’m looking forward to it immensely.

  12. Pavan Jha on August 26th, 2007 4:52 am

seems like an unusual fantasy film.. looking forward to it..

    “jab bhi cigarette jalti hai,
    main jalataa hoon

    aag pe paanv padta hai,
    main dhuen pe chalataa hoon”

waah waah.. beedi ke baad cigarette ki baari..

just one song in the film soundtrack? bahut na-insaafi hai..

I liked the seen in the end where John asks “Maachis hai?” recently gulzar saab shared another interesting poem on cigarette..

    “main cigarette to nahin peeta
magar har aane jaane wale se poochh leta hoon..
    maachis hai?
bahut kuchh hai, jise main phoonk dena chahta hoon”

    All the best Anurag!

  13. Phoenixnu on August 26th, 2007 6:35 am

it works…..has curiosity value…m intersted…the way it starts is straight n then u cant figure out what happens…so i want to know….n is it strange coincidence that i see blue blue again!!

  14. suchita b on August 26th, 2007 6:47 am

    wah wah..

  15. satyajit on August 26th, 2007 7:00 am

    I like it.

Gives me the impression of a brand of surreal thats a blend of any of murakami’s works and cameron crowe’s vanilla sky.

  16. Amit on August 26th, 2007 7:27 am

    loved it anurag…..:d
    loved the anniversary wala dialogue.
paresh is looking to good. lets see if the movie lives up to the trailer.:-?

    Dialogues are smart.
Song is a bit too Jaazzyy

  21. chalam on August 26th, 2007 12:07 pm

Awesome!!! seems like a wild ride of AK’s imagination. But starting the trailer with a inspiration from Kill Bill’s popular track .. was a dampener. copy rights le leee saheb? :d

    j/k

  22. Gopi on August 26th, 2007 11:23 pm

wow! it sure leaves you intrigued. Promises to be a whacko roller-coaster ride.

    You keep inspiring us sir.

  23. Pratim D. Gupta on August 26th, 2007 11:48 pm

Chalam it was not any Kill Bill track… may sound like Battle Without Honor or Humanity by Tomoyasu Hotei but it definitely is original…

  24. Magik on August 27th, 2007 1:51 am

    =d>

bole to ekdum majja aa gaya AK - rock on!

    ^:)^

  25. jayanth on August 27th, 2007 2:02 am

damn cool… very bizarre (infact Vishal Bharadwaj also called it ‘typically AK bizarre type’ on NDTV.)seems like John Abraham is the last man smoking on the face of earth… not sure how the audience are gonna react though, but who cares… as long as the censor board clears it on time!!!

  26. raaj pillai on August 27th, 2007 3:15 am

    anurag,

is it the same trailer which is supposed to be missing from the prints of ‘hey baby’????…read about it (400 prints of the trailer went missing!)…is it true or just gossip?

  29. turrtle on August 27th, 2007 7:46 am

Paresh Rawal just rocks. Have to see the trailer again before I can decide whether its good or bad

  30. RK on August 27th, 2007 9:46 am

Use of Black is giving it style. Its just trailer and does not say much about film but in trailer Dialogues defeat the visuals.
Perhaps Film will fill the gap between, films like O.P Rulhan’s Hulchul and Jane Bhee Do yaron.
HulChul had very interesting situations but did not get support of apt dialogues and though it could have been JBDY but it did not and hope No Smoking fills that gap.
Film will certainly decide about acting ability of John Abraham, If he cant act under direction of Anurag Kashyap, who took good work from supporting cast also in BF, then this acting area will always remain elusive for John. Though film will open well because of John’s presence as he is one of the saleable person in filmworld. He is looking like a very good model and film will suggest if he has acted as well. From trailer, Ayesha and Paresh Rawal are shadowing John.
Ayesha takia has better timing for saying her juicy dialogues while John takes fraction of time to say same kind of dialogue.
    Interesting trailer

  35. Faraaz on August 27th, 2007 6:39 pm

anyone find any resemblance with James Woods film Cats Eye??

and the first bit has a huge Taxi Driver hangover lol

  36. Anurag Kashyap on August 27th, 2007 9:32 pm

P.S. I advice everyone to see cat’s eye before seeing no smoking.. DVD’s are easily available.. if you don’t find them, i have copies made of it just to distribute it..

  37. Anurag Kashyap on August 27th, 2007 9:46 pm

and there is also Smoking/No smoking

and the sarvodaya guy thinks it’s Thank you for smoking

pl see all of them.. have made copies of all of them

  38. Machchar on August 27th, 2007 10:23 pm

Anurag, distribute copies of DVD’s? Piracy? Illegal? Public Statement? Haha!

  39. Evelyn Tu on August 27th, 2007 10:26 pm

Do I see bits of All That Jazz’s grand finale, too? Because of the great combination of Anurag and Vishal Bhardwaj, I need to see this, in spite of the finger-choppy-thing scaring the crap out of me.

Speaking almost no Hindi, I’m probably a little more mystified than the other readers.

  40. oz on August 27th, 2007 10:50 pm

@Machchar, piracy? it’s freely available on Netflix… aHah!

  41. sundeep on August 27th, 2007 10:54 pm

hey anurag, trailer looks awesome. i tried getting the DVD of CATS EYE but couldnt find it. Can you pl. send me one. im sure you have a strong reason if you wanna us to watch it before watching no smoking. Two thumbs up for the title design/ animation looks cool. all the very best.

  42. Anurag Kashyap on August 27th, 2007 10:55 pm

yes evelyn, that song is definitely all that jazz and cabaret, if you pause the trailor you can see a big neon sign in the background displaying the name of the bar..”the bob fosse”
yes faraz the mirror scene is definitely Taxi Driver.. infact it’s an asshole feeling like travis bickle scene.. the film has hell of a lot of hidden tributes, the ones you are talking here are the obvious ones.. wait till it comes and spot the tributes.. you can spot them all will buy you drinks, in whichever part of the world..

  43. Anurag Kashyap on August 27th, 2007 10:57 pm

sundeep i have made copies of cat’s eye.. ever since ramu started saying i am remaking cat’s eye.. if you are in bombay.. it’s available at sarvodaya and movie empire.. or mail me your address i can send it

  44. sundeep on August 27th, 2007 10:58 pm

thankyou somuch. i will do so.

  45. Sandil on August 27th, 2007 11:14 pm

Couldn’t find Cat’s eye at the DVD-rental, are you really remaking it, or are you just distributing it for now? :d

  46. Rony D'costa on August 27th, 2007 11:20 pm

Anurag, my address is Rony D’costa pp dias compound, shamimullah chawl, room no 10, society road, andheri (e, Mumbai - 69. Pls mail me a copy. i have seen Thank you for not smoking. but havent seen cat’s eye smoking/no somoking. btw the trailer reminded me of the game. and the last shot of russian singing is still ringing in my ears.

  47. Anurag Kashyap on August 27th, 2007 11:20 pm

you tell me when you see the film whether it’s a remake or not sandil.. somebody pl post a link to cat’s eye

  48. Rony D'costa on August 27th, 2007 11:23 pm

Anurag, met ramu yesterday. he asked me which of the recent trailers i liked recently. i said NO SMOKING.he didn’t react after that. kuch panga hai kya?

  49. Sandil on August 27th, 2007 11:24 pm

Loved the trailer, I surely will when it hits theaters :-)

  50. wb on August 27th, 2007 11:25 pm

yup, post the link - otherwise AK will have to supply all and sundry with copies of cat’s eye. but, before we post the link, can someone please check and advise of the the legal ramifications? that said, i am sure the movie can be found on google or youtube or some place like that.

  51. Anurag Kashyap on August 27th, 2007 11:27 pm

conceptually it will seem like the game.. then it’s a ride of the warped mind

  52. Anurag Kashyap on August 27th, 2007 11:33 pm

really i want the audience to react to the film more than me explaining anything.. expecting truckloads of criticism

  58. kishan on August 27th, 2007 11:56 pm

    Hi anurag…

Just spotted the words “cat’s eye” on this page and I am posting this. I watched this movie on netflix because I saw the name “Stephen King” on the poster, who I love by the way..

I was surprised after watching the first part of the movie. It was so similar to one of the parts in Darna mana hai. Ramu’s version was much more funny but Cat’s eye was different in a way. It was hilarious too.. ( I know Ramu is a fan of King too)..

If anybody wants to watch this movie online, you can watch it on netflix.com.
Please email me if anyone needs username/password.
Netflix allows only 16 hrs per month….

  59. Anurag Kashyap on August 28th, 2007 12:08 am

yes kishan i am aware.. no smoking started from a story ramu told me, which was “quitters inc” which i did read but it was a six page story in different seasons.. which i kept developing on my own.. over the years it took it’s own political conotation.. and thank god i never saw cat’s eye until nine months back on my friend’s insistence..
all this and more is written in my very second post on how the film came into being.. at that time i wasn’t much aware of the source of the story, now i am ..which is why i insist see cat’s eye before watching my film.. then tell me if it’s a copy

  60. Sandil on August 28th, 2007 12:18 am

    Where/how do I email you?

  61. kishan on August 28th, 2007 12:24 am

    anurag

I just watched the trailer. I have to say that it seems like the basic concept of the movie resembles cat’s eye but the world in which ur movie is setup looks completely different…

I hope the similarity ends there and looks like ur movie is going to be a weird thriller unlike cat’s eye which to me was funny and scary….

  62. oz on August 28th, 2007 12:26 am

anurag first mentioned about the ramu incident here… almost a year ago…

    http://passionforcinema.com/no-smoking-8-years-in-the-making/

  63. oz on August 28th, 2007 12:33 am

I’ve read the script of No Smoking… lets end all speculations here… being the one of his worst critics… I was saving the punch upon its release but since the talk’s started now…

Cat’s eye is a three story movie - all stories are unconnected except the cat. each story is like an episode. the first episode is quitter’s inc. starring James Woods - length of the episode: 30 minutes.

The similarities in the script and the 30 minute movie - Quitter’s Inc START AND END WHEN THE PROTAGONIST WANTS TO QUIT SMOKING AND GOES TO A DUBIOUS FIRM THAT HELPS QUIT SMOKING. And Quitter’s Inc episode is one shitty 30 minute thingy. Doordarshan serials were much better than that.

That’s it. None of the scenes in the entire script before or after that match anything in No Smoking. Infact the movie pays salutes to many movies Anurag has loved… in the same sense Tarantino did in his last homage (Kill Bill) to Chinese/Martial arts movies of the seventies.

By the way here’s Cat’s Eye on Netflix… if you have an account you can watch it now:

  65. maxpower on August 28th, 2007 12:57 am

will watch it just for paresh rawal doing some actual acting..and ofcourse AK too..

  66. RK on August 28th, 2007 1:28 am

Have you guys noticed that Anurag Kashyap and his cinematographer, both have immitated “Auguste and Louis Lumiere”?:)

  67. Tony Mera Naam on August 28th, 2007 1:35 am

This film looks totally fucked up! Seems like a really crazy dream… the ones where you wake up only to find yourself in another dream…

As much as I respect Anurag, I don’t think India is going to accept such a wild film…

  68. Tony Mera Naam on August 28th, 2007 1:43 am

Ok just watched it again… its still fucked up… John looks like he’s given a helluva performance… Ayesha’s different, nice to see her deadpan… “Is baar anniversary par kya chahiye tujhe?” “Divorce.” “Itna budget nahin hai mera”. Nice :)

  69. Anurag Kashyap on August 28th, 2007 2:08 am

rony..cat’s eye screening we will have at my house one of these days not followed by no smoking..for that you will have to wait

  70. Vinayak on August 28th, 2007 2:08 am

Just like to point out, Martin Scorsese was paying homage to various Italian directors, which he grew up watching, through various scenes in some of the movies that he has made.
The point being: its only natural. However, he never got into the Business of Homage, of which some might blame Tarantino.

In India, we can blame RGV of that…Factory of used Ideas

  71. Anurag Kashyap on August 28th, 2007 2:09 am

    ha ha vinayak.. hmmmm

  72. Tony Mera Naam on August 28th, 2007 2:14 am

Yeah Vinayak I think Ranvir gets his fingers back… a few scenes before the freaky torture scene you see him elated while rubbing his hand/fingers…

  73. RK on August 28th, 2007 2:22 am

Vinayak: you caught RGV at right place. Factory of used ideas. He should have kept proper name for his production house:
    “Recycled Factory” or “Factoryfor recycling”.
As people make recycled polymer from used polymer he makes his films.
I am curious to see how long Amitabh Bachchan can work in films of RGV because Amitabh is the only reliable thing in his latest films. Rest all is just recycled material.
    :(

  74. shvia on August 28th, 2007 2:27 am

the trailer tells the story, but is very boringly cut. i assume it’s coz of trying to convey the mood of the film. but with this kind of cut, it’ll be hard to pull in audience. i hope the teasers will be out soon, and hopefully they’ll be interesting than the trailer.

  75. Shravani on August 28th, 2007 4:26 am

The trailer had me hooked!! What a novel way to make someone give up smoking - scare them to death!! This is one movie you can’t slot - is it a comedy ? A thriller ? Tragedy ? Redemption for a complusive smoker? Love seeing a film where the beginning, middle and end are not predicatable. BTW, John looks distractingly handsome - hope people will not let that stand in the way of his performance.

  76. drupad venugopal on August 28th, 2007 4:57 am

Anurag, when will the website be up?

  77. V.P.Jaiganesh on August 28th, 2007 5:35 am

Of all the stylish scenes in the trailer, the one that takes the cake is the scene where a little girl in a car traveling ahead signaling John to quit smoking. That was great. Otherwise it looked like a good teaser and that is all it had to be. For a change lets have a film that is way better than its trailer.

  78. Ashish Shukla on August 28th, 2007 8:18 am

guru film to interesting lag rahi hai par ye soundtrack kuchh zyaada he Kill Bill sa sound kar raha hai!!

  79. Vinayak on August 28th, 2007 9:22 am

    @RK
I wonder if RGV asked Amitabh,

  80. SID on August 28th, 2007 12:22 pm

    ANURAG- Looks Intersting,

Why Blue Tinge in almost all the frames?? does it signify smoke by any chance??As i was in office had to see da trailer with sound off! without sound and dialogue PARESH RAWAL reminded me of ARJUN, and NAAM movie kind!! waiting for da release all da best bDW i had see a french movie about three friends ,,,da intro scene one of the character was ala Travis,,,,and of da best i had seen will upload in youtube

  81. wb on August 28th, 2007 1:28 pm

vinayak - thanks to your josef k comment… gonna watch soderbergh’s kafka tonight

  82. Ray on August 28th, 2007 2:29 pm

John abraham looks great in the trailer but his dialogue delivery fails him…I am almost sure he is gonna ruin the movie for me.

  83. Pavan Jha on August 28th, 2007 2:34 pm

    Anurag

Any update on Gulal.. I was excited about the film as I believe it was based in Rajasthan.. but could not find any updates in last couple of years? Is it complete and some day we expect it to see light? or is it completely shelved?

Anurag slight correction Quitters Inc didn’t come in Different Seasons ( this book was semi autobiographical book on king and about the craft of writing). Quitters Inc was part of Night Shift collection, had to point out the correction as I’m his number one fan unlike Annie Wilkes ;-)

Btw No Smoking trailer played at Cinemax Versova, I found it trippy:)

  86. Anurag Kashyap on August 28th, 2007 8:24 pm

thanx suparn..night shift it is.. i am having a lot of those memory lapses and mixing up these days.. guess i need revital or sonachandi chyawanprash..
    SID la haine is awesome..
Vinayak well the film gets kafkaesque..
K for kafka, kaufman.. that’s the zone one is trying to go.. how far and how well one has gone in only you can say after watching the film

  87. criminallysane on September 2nd, 2007 11:21 pm

Slick trailer, & john is looking suave, got damn suave, just for the record after watching black friday on those chintoo candy paki prints a few years back , ive been a huge fan of anurag kashyap, so anything this guy is getting out MUST be effing great.

  88. aj on September 3rd, 2007 12:45 am

one question to anurag : why did u choose no smoking over other stories (i m sure you have other ideas) at this point of time?

  89. Sreehari. on September 3rd, 2007 10:51 pm

Loved what I saw… truly loved it.. there was this thing… u knw.. this feeling of a surreal existence in a real world… a feeling of getting up one day and discovering that u r the same, the material things around u are the same but the people have changed…

a few queries… is the story looked at from a minority point of view or majority?? i think gr8 directors often start with a minority POV of a situation and then slowly expand their boundaries and reach out for the larger picture. i just hope this film achieves that…

you will find that info in anurag’s post aj…

  97. aj on September 6th, 2007 1:10 am

which is why i asked because i thought i read that it was the other way round , ramu narrated a story (quitters’ inc) to anurag ..wheras ramu made the saif boman thingie …anurag developed it further and also incorporated another short story by an assistant of his to come up with ‘no smoking’…may be i read dat worng …but thats how i remember reading it

  98. CC on September 6th, 2007 1:13 am

Pratim very fluidly written article in the telegraph, but I just want to express my concern about the opening shot of the trailer, don

  99. Pratim D. Gupta on September 6th, 2007 1:50 am

anurag is the best person to answer your question CC… obviously he has another story to tell otherwise only a mad man would make such a big film about a concept which is prohibited on the Indian big screen…

  100. Shatrughan on September 6th, 2007 2:03 am

    nice article pratim… ^:)^^:)^^:)^

  101. CC on September 6th, 2007 2:36 am

OK Iam redirecting this to Anurag… I just want to express my concern about the opening shot of the trailer, don

  102. Anurag Kashyap on September 6th, 2007 3:48 pm

if you ask me the same question again after seeing the film i will answer it..

  103. nitin baid on September 6th, 2007 9:13 pm

p.s ::cc you need help !!

    hey anurag,

Dude since you have been acting so heavily generous ..i thought it would be great to reap something out of it..to be clear- I WANT CATS EYE…please send it off..don’t worry i will watch no smoking twice in return..and yeah kauffman is currently going bonkers it seems directing synechdoche(obviously i am terrible with spellings so stop grinning)..

  104. AZAD on September 7th, 2007 12:49 am

hey CC, what do you think about Killing on screen by the super stars Or even Rash driving, as in the case of Dhoom series. Dont you think that sends out a bad message too to the youngsters. If you go by the logic of banning such movies, then we will be forced to feed upon the movies of Johars Barjatiyas and Chopras only.

I myself am a smoker, though I am completely aware of its ill effects too. But at the same time I am not a believer of free lunches too. Everything comes with a price and as of today the pleasure that I derive from smoking is much more than price that I pay for it(it includes health hazards too)

And moreover, on one hand people complain that our films lack realism, and on the other hand you say that we should not show smoking on screen. If we go by the data you have presented more than 10% of people are smokers in this world. So, if the director choses to show on screen smoking, he is just trying to make it realistic.

And if you still think that this movie will entice you or your kids to smoke, dont go out to watch this movie. Nobody can take that right away from you.

  105. AZAD on September 7th, 2007 12:53 am

The trailer of No Smoking looks very bizarre and I am not able to comprehend the connections between the frames shown in the trailer, but none the less its exciting enough for me to go out and watch.

Before watching the trailer, I used to believe that it could be inspired from Thank You For Smoking. But it doesnt look like it anymore. I had enjoyed Thank You For Smoking very much, hope I enjoy NO SMOKING too.

I just hope that the movie doesnt turn out to be too preachy

  106. Cubicle Bound Misfit on September 7th, 2007 12:08 pm

    Anurag,
After watching the trailer , I got back to my dust-eaten copy of Night Shift and read ‘Quitter’s Inc’ again. Really there are some similarities…at least from the trailer…does Paresh plays role of that psychopath ‘Pragmatist’Donnati who warned the protagonist that if he did not quit smokin’ then how they would torture his wife, his son and what would be the consequence of his not watching his weight even after quittin’ cigarette? I have much trust in you and much love for Stevie uncle’s earlier works. If, I see you getting inspired by the favorite boogeyman of US, personally, I would not feel that bad as long as your movie is one hell of a kick ass experience.
    Regards,

    hi anurag,
the trailor of ‘NO SMOKING’ has the humour of COEN BROS and the visual appeal of a GUY RITCHIE-JOHN DAHL-SPIKE LEE-TONY SCOTT-QUENTIN TARANTINO film…well, is it gonna be as bizarre as any DAVID LYNCH film?
waiting to watch it for sure…cheers!

  109. Nikhil Sablania on September 9th, 2007 12:44 pm

    Hi Anurag,
Just saw the trailor of No Smoking, and I loved that dialouge, “Aa raha hu, ja rahi hu…” Good thought and good editting work. Fantastic man! I’m sure the trailor has evoked thoughts regarding matter in the movie, is concerned, but there was un unconscious fear of too much stylisation. Recently I watched black Friday. That was very raw but was dealt well in the later half. But thanks to you that u made such a movie. I don’t know how Jhon will do because he is not an actor at all. U had good actors in Black Friday. Pawan Malhotra was fabulas in his character. Plz don’t get commercialise, because it is u and ur talent on which others will do commerce.

K is for Kafka or K is for Kashyap???:-?

  111. Anurag Kashyap on September 18th, 2007 3:03 am

k for kafka, kaufman, also for khan, kumar, kapoor, khalid and kashyap..

  112. Machchar on September 18th, 2007 3:06 am

Anurag, I am very very curious about No Smoking’s plot…care to email me in secret plss??

  113. Anurag Kashyap on September 18th, 2007 3:06 am

but largely a throwback on joseph K from the trial.. i talk more than that and will call for trouble.. if you have read the book and you know what it stands for..then you know.. my film is a wannabe kafka.. but with a little bit of kaufman and fincher and balaji and bob fosse and “fuck you” thrown in it..

  114. AZAD on September 18th, 2007 3:23 am

is The K of No Smoking is going to meet the same the same fate as that of K of Trial, i.e. meeting death like a dog??
I had always believed K in trial stands for Kafka, so probably K in No Smoking stands for Kashyap, or so I believe.

  115. AZAD on September 18th, 2007 3:25 am

is there any kind of similarity between K of No Smoking and Everyman of Fight Club??

  116. Anurag Kashyap on September 18th, 2007 2:10 pm

watch it azaad..why do u want me to give it away

  117. AZAD on September 19th, 2007 5:07 am

No, I dont want you to give it away, but I expected an intelligent answer to my foolish questions :d.

Obviously, I will be watching it. First Day Night Show

  118. Danny Wild Card on September 29th, 2007 1:28 am

  119. Sourav on September 29th, 2007 1:32 am

  122. AZAD on October 22nd, 2007 2:03 am

The latest trailers of No Smoking are very engaging. It has got a thrilling effect to it, esp due to the Phoonk De score running in the background.

  123. Sourav on October 22nd, 2007 2:10 am

  124. The Narcisist on October 22nd, 2007 5:45 am
