NO SMOKING-three days to go

Anurag Kashyap
Anurag Kashyap   | Exclusive, Movies, My Diary | October 16, 2006 at 3:03 am

I am so scared..i feel like i don’t know anything..three days to go and we don’t have an actress..ayesha takia or priyanka chopra..paresh rawal or irfan khan..god knows..irfan is not available before he is done with a mighty heart..i hope raj kumar santoshi doesn’t ditch us..will be great to have him act in the film..we have locked john abraham, ranveer shorey, aditya basu bhattacharya, joy fernandes..i hope i survive the mainstream..how much i want to go back to making completely independent films..i don’t know whether we will be able to pull of the special effects..gulzar sahab has written two cigarette songs ,four more to go..have to get the rights to the old songs..wish black friday releases soon..more freedom..have promised rajkumar(my associate) if we pull this one off,i will get him laid..i have to go meet john..have to show him all the coen brother’s films..especially big lebowski, barton fink and raising arizona..matthew robbins(sugarland express) says john has to be willing to play the fool..,”you need a jim carrey anurag to pull this off”..john is willing to go the whole hog..he is ready to be broken down..lets see.. have to meet the grip guy..have to get him to cut down on his price..or i will have to make do with what i have and innovate..how will i do it..why can’t we have other people to do the dirty job..who the fuck asked me to write this film..Oh Scorcese..give me strength..

    Aditya bhattarcharya acting ????
Did i hear that right ???? Since when ????

Didn’t get the santoshi connection. I thought vishaal was producing no smoking … Now is it rajkumar santoshi ????

Irfan is down for Might heart (pune) Brangelina film isnt it ???

And yes I’m sure gulzar sahib wld’ve given amazing lyrics for Ciggerette. Gulzar’s film protaginists/characters are really fascinated by ciggerettes (Ghar, Ijazat, Saathiya) ….

3 days to go and yet no actress ???? … the demons of mainstream cinema dancing in front of your eyes ….

    Trust me … It’s all worth it …. :-)

Dont’ forget Miller’s Crossing Anurag, that is a SEMINAL coen brother’s film. The part where Michael Gambon (dumbledore in harry potter films) fights off the assassins on him with a cigar in his mouth is classic. QT even referenced it in Kill Bill in the O-Ren Ishii anime sequence.
Great to see you blogging. I must say I loved the chase sequence in Black Friday and the low key music from Indian Ocean. I liked that you didn’t use long lenses and kept the chase almost as if the cameraman was one of the cops looking for the terrorists and navigating through the crowd. There’s a frantic pace and a tension in the air to that chase sequence that I haven’t seen in other Indian films, unless the hero is chasing a car on his feet and that’s just being superflous.

Personally, I am equally interestd in how much the grip is charging you (and what compromises you’ll have to make if he doesn’t change his prices) as in how you chose your actors and how you will motivate them to let it all hang out.

    @Anurag…

great to see u here. Black Friday was definitely an amazing experience (sorry, I watched it on a pirated DVD ) and looking forward to ‘No Smoking’.

In fact, just wrote a few lines of a ’smoking’ song (in sheer excitement of finding u here)…use it if it’s any worth.

    Mukhda:

    Raakh ne hi raakha hai,
    raakh ne hi raakha…

    Ek-pal ka dhuaan chhupaa le,
    Chaar din ka faaka…

    Raakh ne hi raakha hai,
    raakh ne hi raakha…

    Antara:

Ik talab ki aas mein jab,
    din guzaara saans mein jab,

    Raat hote gir gayi thi,
    oas sookhi ghaas mein jab,

    Tab jalaakar ek sapna,
    aur usko laal kar ke,
    Honth se chooma tha halke,
    Bas yahi sawaal kar ke…

    Kyun hai har lamha lutera,
    Zindagi kyun daaka hai…

    Raakh ne hi raakha hai,
    raakh ne hi raakha…

(And yes, if possible, please include Kay kay in the cast…he was simply brilliant in Black Friday…and so was Pavan Malhotra!)

    hi manjeet,
sure it is great fun working with AK…There is no rocket science involved in how my direction team works or for that matter any other direction team per say…it can be as simple or complicated as one wants it to be.NO SMOKING direction team consists of eleven members including AK…AK,gautam(Casting Director and also an AD) and i have worked together before on BLACK FRIDAY. The other members of the team Prashant,Abhishek, Anshul, Shlok,Nitin,Param,Rohit(directors AD) and sunil are working with us for the first time. When we started work on this film i asked them too choose whatever departments(i am assuming that you are aware of the number of deparments any direction team has to look into) that they wanted to passionately and resposibly work for…and luckly for me, their choices covered all the departments that i needed my direction team to look into. Gautam started casting process…Prashant started working on the schedule…Shlok and Abhishek chose to co-ordinate with the production designer…Anshul took over the co-ordination with the coustume designer of the film…other ad’s joined us just before the shoot…hey manjeet sorry yaar…Nasta break is over…lighting ready

And anurag it’s really a wonderful experience to get in touch with a film-maker on a mono-e-mono level in a way… passed out from film school with dreams in my eyes to make my own movie… instead chose a slighly more secure profession – television!! but the dream is still rolling between my eyes in glorious technicolor and in vista-vision!! but nice to hear in detail what goes on in a director’s head, and what goes into a project. its so much better than pre-produced EPKs and tv interviews where the cast and crew talk about – “we had so much fun shooting this film!!” bollocks!! you forgot to mention the grit, the grime, the angst that the director goes thru… and so here we get it – uncut, uncensored (thank god!!)… hope shoot is goin on fine… and i am yet to watch black friday… any more screenings happening?? cheers

quote – i hope i survive the mainstream..how much i want to go back to making completely independent films.. – unquote

what is stopping you from making completely independent film?

why do you think your making mainstream cinema is necessary, so much so that you are killing your desire to go back to independent cinema?

    let me guess.
you think you have something so great that if world doesn’t come to know about it, it will parish. or bollywood is drowning and you are the Noah !

well i have no problem with that, you are free to think about yourself whatever you like.

    here’s my objection.
‘main aaj bhi fenke huye paise nahien uthata’

if i have less money than you. than you will not try to give me money. you know this will heart my self-esteem. it will be kind of an insult to me.

your having more money does not entitle you to give it to them who have less. if you try to give them, it will only be an insult. this way you will be mocking there poverty. be both know thanks to bollywood that this is not good.

so, how your giving your knowledge to those who have less knowledge than you is different.

giving me knowledge without me first asking for it. you are insulting my intelligence.

giving money insult poverty. giving knowledge insult intelligence.

no matter how little intelligence i have got. but it is enough to feel offended by unsolicited advice. [-x

the question is giving unsolicited knowledge is wrong or not?

duniya tabah ho jayegi, gyaniyon ka gyan batana jarooi hai. samajik jimmedari bhi kuch hoti hai. yeah batien apan phir kabhie karenge.

abhi sirf ek sawal – bina mange gyan dena galat hai ya nahien ?

a hint – before writing response to this, take a moment and think about ‘fascism.’ could this word be employed in the context of ideas also. forcing ideas.

    Hi Anurag.
Gullal – A superb superb superb superb movie.
Just couldn’t think of anything else while i was watching the movie.
I just got a feeling that somethings were missing and i couldn’t connect some scenes in the movie. I am sure the uncut version of the movie will help me understand that too. Could i get to see the uncensored version of the movie.

    Dear Anurag ji,

I am facing identity crisis with you. I am a very active member on FB (Facebook). Other members consider me as YOU. Inspite of my denying of me being You, they think I was joking. Various new comers and movie aspirants send me friend request every day. How many should i ignore? Some are too , too sensitive and any truth would break their dream. So in many cases I had to become you , give them acting and filmography tips and cool them down for some days. I do not want to live with lie. What to do?
    Please help me.

    Hey Anurag,

I think ur doing a great work…plz keep it up…I mean for how long can we watch stupid running around the bushes movies? Some one has to bring the change & bring the revolution in the film industry & so far ur doing it brilliantly. We are very proud to have you in the industry.

In mean, while I was also thinking if you are interested to encourage documentaries on our social problem in Mumbai city. I have lived abroad for few years, after coming back I was thinking of leaving coz I thought it is impossible to live here but then I thought I am just running away. Instead I have decided to take up a project, which would help creating awareness in people and also educate them about certain issues. I would not like to disclose the subject of the documentary as it is still under research but since you are my idol in the film industry I would like to know ur thoughts.

    Regards,
    Chetana Jogi
